Howard" Subject: Cleopatra promotion update via Jerry V To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello all- First off I would like to say that the hoped for TennNuman show doesn't look like it will happen. The problem is my efforts began too late to get it going (if only I knew who to talk to earliar!!!). I was told that Gary and his entourage (30+ people) have likely already booked their flights back to the UK. If there is another US tour later in the year (hoping), I'll be on it a lot earlier with the right people and a Tennessee show WILL be booked! I am taking it upon myself to find out as much as I can about the promotion efforts for Gary here in the US. I will have updates posted as I get them through my web site (An Alien Cure http://www.mtsu.edu/~rein02b4/numan.html). There seems to be a lack of information in this area, and many fans really want to know what's up. Here's the latest: Cleopatra's PR dept. is extremely busy right now working on tour press. Basically they are dealing with local media in the towns he will be playing to promote the shows. Also, there is a 30 second ad that will be running on MTV to promote the tour. The ad will be showing parts of the Dominion Day video in the background as other tour info and voice overs hype the tour. There currently is no plan for an interview and/or performance on 120 Minutes (pity). Also, there are no current plans to push the video on MTV. The PR dept. is staying too busy with the tour to put the required efforts into pushing a video. Frankly, they don't even have a copy in proper broadcast format to even submit it to MTV at this time. Gary is doing a bit for VH-1 for a program called "Where Are They Now?" which hopefully will make it clear that instead of being retired and just flying planes now; he is currently making important music, and is still a vital and important recording artist. We'll see... More later -Jerry V will you visit me please, if i open my door... I could not beleive how dated it sounded actually and I used to love that record. I remember playing it on repeat again and again at the time of issue. My comment on the religious element of the Exile discussion - Gary just writes stories that he turns into songs, it does not necessarily follow that he believes in it and also this is just fiction. It is not as if it really happened or is going to happen. Just enjoy the music and don;t get so hung up on the lyric content!! That's all Joke: How many men does it take to paper a bathroom? We had a USA version and a UK version. I don't remember why there are two versions or indeed whether the USA version was used. They're basically pretty similar but the easy way to tell the difference is in the drum machine intro. On the UK version the drum pattern just repeats while on the USA version it's been treated so the pitch slowly descends before the first handclaps. Can any of you confirm that this was the version used on the USA release. I'm getting masters made for both UK and USA production, so I'm tempted to give the USA their original version of the album and the UK can have theirs! BTW the remasters have been going great. We found the original studio tapes for all four albums, Tubeway Army / Replicas / The Pleasure Principle / Telekon, and used those as opposed to the 'Cutting masters' which are tapes that were made when the studio masters were adjusted for the vinyl cut. These studio masters were all much 'cleaner' and had more detail (no compression), though on tracks like 'Please Push No More' you can hear more tape hiss but we felt it was worth it to retain the clarity of the performance. Unfortunately, you can't completely lose hiss without a loss of other sounds in the frequency range. Anyway, you can hear for yourselves in June. - steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 12:04:09 +0100 From: Matthew Tamea Subject: robert palmer To: Numannews To settle the Robert Palmer debate, I found this on a Robert Palmer page today... Thought I'd share it. By the way, Numan stops in Pittsburgh (Oakland, actually) on Wed, May 6, at Club Laga (412) 682-2050 or (412) 323-1919. My ticket was a mere $12. OK, here's the article. The Accidental Rock'n'Roll Star Since Gary Numan's coldly electronic music cut an icy, futuristic swath through the world's pop music landscape in the early 1980s bands from Chicago's Ministry to Wales' Xymox have labored to replicate his man-meets-computer-age aesthetic. Musicians have recorded in dank basements or suspended microphones from ceilings to capture Numan's trademark remoteness. For his part, Numan ñ who is riding a renewed wave of international popularily spurred by young alternative acts from Beck to Marilyn Manson covering his material ñ laughs at how million-selling albums like "Pleasure Principle" and "Tubeway Army" actually were recorded. "I've always found it sort of interesting how a lack of ability of producing rccords was partly responsible for the cold feel to them" he says over the phone from his home in Middlesex England. The Numan of 20 years ago, he describes as "a very isolated, insecure person, unhappy with my own company and nervous about mixing with people." But for a music world looking for a followup to the blistering angst of punk, Numan's disquieting character flaws, when mixed with starkly rhythmic keyboard, bass and synthesizer tracks, was an eerie, captivating potion. Numan recalls the unlikely success of his 1979 hit "Cars." It was unique for dominating radio without use of any Fender or Gibson products. "I guess I ended up with a lot of this by accident," Numan says of his brief career that stalled after he ceased touring altogether after a series of sold out 1981 concerts at London's Wembley Arena. But, as one of Numan's new wave contemporaries, Elvis Costello, observed, accidents will happen. After spending his offstage years racing expensive cars, flying vintage airplanes and releasing a series of mildly successful albums in the United Kingdom, Numan says, he noticed other musicians suddenly showering him with praise about 18 months ago. It was no mystery that European dance bands Depeche Mode and O.M.D. owed Numan's pioneering work a nod of acknowledgement but hearing Foo Fighters and Smashing Pumpkins laud his early work as a continuing influence was enough to get Numan out of the cockpit and back in the studio. The result is "Exile," an album as powerfully stark and lyrically intelligent as his early work. Although possessed of a tougher, industrial edge, Numan's woeful tense vocal delivery remains the perfect vehicle to deliver his messages of dread and danceable despair. "I wasn't aware, until that, there's been an explosion of people saying I've been influential and covering my songs," he says. "It's been an amazing period because in the States, particularly, it's as though I've been a one-hit wonder who made no influence at all, but the majority of new fans have been Americans, and I'm very proud and very, very flattered." ____________________ I just bought Exile. It's a good album, just not a great album. My favs are Dominion Day and Dead Heaven, despite the heavy anti-Christian themes. Does anyone know the name of the kick-ass font used for Exile? Hope everyone in the US enjoys the tour! Cars (I usually hate this track) and the tracks Emotion and She's got Claws are pretty good. The best track though is the last version on the list of We are so Fragile, sounds a bit like an old track by Altern 8 (If memory serves me right). This is a good buy. You have to forget about the fact that it is far removed from the originals and it's someone else's version of how they would do the songs with Gary's vocals. Be objective and stop comparing to originals, that is not the idea. I would also add that I live in Glasgow, Scotland and ordered the mix from CD Now from the link at AFE web site. They advised me it would take approx. 3 weeks for delivery but it came in 10 days. This company are second to none for service and I had three e-mails from them confirming checking the status of the order and offering help and advice if the product did not arrive or was faulty. The UK version says p/c 1997 and has the Eagle logo. The booklets are exctly the same, except the UK version has red stripes down the edges of the pages and the US version has black stripes. So there you go. Seems I completely missed another "religion" debate. Actually, I'm glad I did. In another letter (in this same digest, i believe) I had said that I liked Dominion Day and Dead Heaven despite their anti-Christian themes. Later, as I was reading through digest #417, I came across Joey Lindstrom's "Some People Just Don't Get It" letter, and his explanation of Exile's content. I'm glad I read it. All I can say is, right on, Joey! This is one time I'm happy to be wrong. I think that in the final Seinfeld episode we'll see Jerry and the gang at some party when we hear, " 'ello, Jerry," to which the Sein turns around, sees our man Gary, and says with a sneer, "hello... Numan!" (high cheese factor, I know). BTW, since I'm on the subject of NBC sitcoms, a couple years back on "Frasier" they made reference to a doctor on the show, who we never saw because he'd had a heart attack and died, who was named Gary Numan. Or Newman, maybe, we were never told which. Probably old news to some of you. Oh well. -- "It's good to be a seeker, but sooner or later you have to be a finder. And then it is well to give what you have found, a gift into the world, for whoever will accept it."
