Thanks to all the Numanoids at the Field- had a blast! I managed to sneak in to the Middle East during soundcheck and met with Gary and had a nice cozy 10 minute hang-out with him and my friends. He loved my tattoo and even grabbed Gemma to take a look. He was concerned about the size of the club (500 or so) but we explained a lot of other Boston clubs had closed and that the Middle East was the place. He signed my flyer and we got booted out ("If you're not with the band then leave!"). I think the bouncer even asked Gary if he was in a band. He shrugged and said "I'm just a stranger here". Tee hee... A fun few moments for me! The show was absolutely packed and I bet they had to turn people away at the door. The opening band - well - played. The crowd was excellent and no problems there. Us Numanoid Digesters were up front and center. A good set list - FRIENDS was a good opener. It was good to see Gary loose and happy. The mix of old and new was pretty good and I thoroughly enjoyed it - even having to drive home through nasty fog at 1 am to get up for work in 6 hours..... It was lovely!!!! Good luck to all of you seeing him soon! I have just finished listening to the Dom Day singles which landed on my doorstep a few minuits ago and...........................................WOW!!!!!!! The Dom Day extended mix is just fantastic as is Dead Heaven. Metal,DITP,andVoix get a real kick up the pants which is just fandabulosus?!?!?! It's great to hear the live stuff too as so many of us were there, can you hear yourself shouting? I can hear all of you!!! I am very keen to buy the extended mix of Exile so if anyone has any updated information regarding the release, please could they email me or post the message to the digest THANX ANDY http://wkweb5.cableinet.co.uk/DONUT ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 May 1998 15:46:29 GMT0BST From: "James Chapman" Subject: dominion day-a review To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Well, after waiting for 2 weeks for HMV to get the 2 singles in, they finally got them at the weekend. Soehow they cost stlg5 instead of 4, but I wasn't complaining. After about 5 listens, here's what I think: Disc 1. 1. DD-video edit Essentially the same as the album version but with bits taken out to accomodate the video. I prefer the original. 2. Voix 20th (10th, I think!) Anniversary mix This should be interesting-the original is one of my current faves. I don't really like it. Problem is a lot of new sounds are introduced but the original synths are still there, especially on the background on the "I don't need opinions and rumours" line, and the whole thing just sounds wrong. That heavy guitar annoys me as well. 3. Dead Heaven extended Precisely what it says, which is a bit disappointing. I was kinda hoping for the song to have a new element about it, but it just has more drum loops and that unusual woo-ooh sound. I like the original better, along with DD its my faourite on Exile, but this is just too long. 8 minutes is too long for any song actually. Put off getting Exile extended when it comes out. 4. Cars (live) What an inspired track selection (not!). Cars has been on umpteen live albums, and this doesn't sound much different to the Dream Corrosion version. I'd have loved to have heard Dark or Dead Heaven live but unfortunately not. Disc 2 1. Dominion Day extended I wasn't expecting anything too special after hearing Dead Heaven extended. I like the long intro with new drum drum loops and all. The first verse is done without guitars-very nice. I like the way they come in at the start of the chorus. The second chorus is done without drums-I like the way the instruments are swapped around. Also a great more upfront bassline in the longer instrumental break. This adds a whole new element-what I was hoping for from DH. Think I'll buy Exile extended after all! 2. Metal 20th Anniversary mix. Oh well, they are only 1 year out this time! Unrecognisable for the first 30 seconds then the synth riff comes in, deeper down in the mix and Exiled scary sounds and drum loops. I like the way the piano sound replaces the 'antiseptic' synth that characterised TPP. This song works far,far better than Voix in the new style-but doesn't quite match the original. An A for effort, though. 3. Down In The park-20th Anniversary mix. Being one of gary's darkest ever songs I was particularly looking forward to this. Sounds scary -new drum loops really work. Unfortunately later on it's spoilt by a Metal-Rhythm sounding synth, which is not in keeping with original or Exile. but apart from that I think it's as good as if not better than the original. 4. Dominion Day (live) Yep, I think it works well live if sounding very similar to the original. In conclusion, I could have just done with just getting disc 2. I really don't like the Exiled version of Voix, but the two oldies are great. I would like to see this done with more songs from 78-81. But could you possibly imagine Gary trying to do this with songs like We Take Mystery, Sister Surprise,Berserker, My Dying Machine, Call Out the Dogs, Pump It Up, I Can't Stop, America, Machine+Soul....... Or how about the other way round...imagine Prophecy in the style of Metal Rhythm, or Dark in the style of The Pleasure Principle. i was also a bit disappointed that there was not a completely new song for a B-side (or the CD equivalent).Although it's understandable given how busy Gary has been lately. I give disc 1 6out of 10, and disc 2 9 out of 10. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- They crawl out of their holes for me...... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 May 1998 10:36:09 +0100 From: Andy McHaffie Subject: Email from a non-Numan fan To: Numan Digest Got a mail from a non-Numan friend of mine in MA. A friend of mine took me to see Gary Numan last night.....it was great...the club that he played at was packed....(I thought I was going to suffer heat exhaustion)...LOTS of energy! I had the most fortunate opportunity to stand right in front of Gary (!) as he was welcomed back to New York after a much too lengthy absence. I was also fortunate enough to stand next to David (NumanBoy) Ellison who definitely made the experience even more enjoyable for me (thanks, David)! What a difference to communicate with someone who not only knows who Gary is, but loves him as much as I (hmm, maybe even more?). I was going to post the song list, but I realize that many people may want to be surprised, so if you'd like to know you can Email me personally and I'll send it out to you. There were 18 songs in all, three of which were encores. Many on this list have stated how they loved the new version of Friends, but I'm sad to report that I did not love it. Although it was an intriguing arrangement, not one single word was clear. This may have been the fault of the sound system, as it certainly wasn't due to the tempo of the song. In the original version, the lyrics fly by in a blur (thank god for lyric sheets), but this one is somewhat more relaxed. If the mix had been better, I'm sure I would have been able to make out what he was saying. Gary's style is much more guitar-oriented in this show. There may be synth riffs here and there, but Ade Orange and David Brooks (on keyboards) are certainly not the stars of the show. Aside from Gary, the most notable performer is Steve Harris, who plays guitar almost as though he's onstage with Van Halen. That is, he's a most accomplished musician, and he bounds across the tiny stage as if it's Madison Square Garden. Quite the dancer, this guy! If I have a complaint, however, I would have to say that there were moments when his guitar drowned out Gary's vocals. Again, probably the sound system. Gary wore shades of gray and black, and his hair is jet black. Whether plugs or weave (as discussed on this list in the past), I really don't care - I think it looks terrific! Since I was positioned directly in front of him I got a close-up view and I think he's matured quite nicely in the 17 years (!) since I last saw him live. And talk about a change in stage presence! He was bouncing his head up and down to the beat, moving around the stage, clasping hands with audience members, and get this - smiling! He seemed to be having the time of his life. The audience loved him, screaming and stomping feet for more seconds after he left the stage. There was no memory shortage for the lyrics, either, with most of us singing along to a good portion of the songs - old and new material alike. I think I was fairly surprised, however, that the entire house sang along with Films. I wouldn't have counted that as one of his best-known, but this crowd certainly knew (and loved) it. The older songs were all given updated arrangements, favoring the wall-of-guitar sound, and although it was in some cases unique, I felt it worked brilliantly. This was the second stop on the North American tour, and it seemed to me he was more than ready for it. With boundless energy and extreme enthusiasm, he tore up Irving Plaza in a way I'm sure no one else could. Gary rocked that place to the ground! In case you can't tell, I loved the show and consider myself very lucky indeed to have been there, even though my feet were ready to fall off after standing for six straight hours (one must arrive early if one wants a good spot on the floor). To the rest of you still holding a ticket for one of the upcoming dates, I envy you. :-) And to Kathryn, Jim, Robert, Charles, David and all the other Numanoids I met in line and inside - thanks for making a great experience even better! For Greg Torrence, who asked what merchandise was available (and anyone else who wants to know): the T-shirt is black with gray/white lettering saying GARY NUMAN across the top and red lettering saying EXILE on the bottom. The photo is the one of Gary in the middle of the Exile CD booklet. The back displays the tour dates for North America. The shirt is $20. There's a poster for $15 (I didn't get one and don't remember what picture it was), and the tour program was $10. The program is all black, and features excerpts from Praying To The Aliens, as well as a photo and bio of each of the band members, and a list of credits for the show. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Just got home from Club Laga in Pittsburgh, a venue that Gary deemed worthy to visit. And I must say, absolutely... GARY NUMAN ROCKS!!!! The show was un-freaking-believable! And, my wife and I were CENTER FRONT STAGE, two or three feet from the man! It was awesome! I can't begin to describe the music... his songs translate PERFECTLY to the guitar. And, being a fan of some guitar-rock-based bands, I can honestly say that this show rocked just as much, if not more, than most bands I've seen. If only the local rock stations could have been there to see it and here it... by God, they would have stood up and taken notice! And Gary was so animated – I had kind of expected him to just stand there and sing and that's about it – but his stage presence was fantastic. I simply can't say enough good things about this show! I wish I could travel to see more of them. If anyone reading this hasn't committed to getting to a show.. well, DO IT! You will not regret it. They added Replicas to the playlist, but dropped We Are Glass. And they did the Jesus Jones version of We Are So Fragile, which was kind of cool. Nothing from Telekon. But after 16 years of waiting, I'm not complaining. To Scott, the Market America Unfranchise owner who we met at the show... hello, and hope to hear from you soon. I see shows all the time at I.P, but NEVER have experienced that type of energy.. from Friends, Dominion Day, Cars and Films (the first four tunes), the energy was amazing. Voix is another great great staple... and the way numan has been able to incorporate more guitar w/o sacrificing ANY of the old sound and energy is nothing short of sensational. I'l male, 33...single etc etc etc. As you may be able to tell by the way I present stats I spend lots of free time in chat. Started with Gary back in '79 when "CARS" came out. To be honest, the 1st time I heard CARS, I was waiting to hear "Clones" by Alice Cooper, on the radio, they played CARS right before, and I forgot about Clones!! About a week or so later came Gary on SNL (Sat Nite Live) and that was great!! I was hooked!! At that time I was with a local hi school garage band...doing covers of Styx, Supertramp, RUSH R.E.O Zeppling Sabbath...you get the idea. That hard rock thing was o.k. but just not for me. I rode the New Wave from then on...Gary opend up a new musical world for me...followed by artists such as DEVO, Sparks, Duran Duran, Human L, and just about any other weird synth pop outfit out there. O.M.D was about the longest lasting of that genre, as far as I'm concerened, still true to that "'80's" sound, even into the '90's I'm a musician...I play electric and acoustic 6 and 12 sring guitars, bass (and Numan inspired) Fretless bass, I can play drums, but these days program a drum machine, and yes..of course, SYNTH!! There was a time..."back in the day" when I had moogs, and ARPs...just like Gary, and would play along to songs like "We Are Glass" Now I'm pretty much out of the synth sound, and firmly back with guitar. I have a small studio in my basement where I write, and record all my own music, (YIKES!! Vocals included ugh) I do everything from writing, playing , and recording for each instrument...to engineering, mixing, and editing. I'm a one man band...AND studio crew. My Motto "You want something done RIGHT you gotta do it yourself!" Now, this may bug a lot of Numan die hards out there...he almost lost me with the Sacrifice album. I'll listen to "Question of Faith"...that's not TOO bad. And I know he almost lost some with Machine and ou, rather than Sacrifice. Maching and Soul gets a big ???? from me! I DID, after months and months get the Exile CD. I had heard several clips on the Numan NuWorld site....from some time back, and I just kinda went..."Yuckkk!!" With every other Numan release I would run out and buy it...day one...with Exile I had planned to not get it at all. Knowing there would be a domestic release here in the US, I didn't invest the $24.99 for the import...I waited for the US version, with the bonus track. I'm sorry I bought even the US CD. I've tried to listen to it...and I just can't...it's HORRIBLE!! The same...boring repetitive drum samples, in slowed down hip hop mode du, du du DAP, da du, du du DAP...drives me nuts. I am thankful that Gary brought the talent of Mike Smith back on board for this one...tho even Smith could'nt save Exile. I wish the Numan/Smith duo could get back to a more "Fury" type of sound. I just imagine what a better CD Sacrifice would've been, with help from M Smith. Anyway...Gary's lost me. I'm faithful to all the old stuff but album by album he's been losing me, starting with Machine and Soul, and on from there. I mostly focus my musical attention on "Early Music" 12th - 14th century European...as well as the generic "World Music" term of which should be self descriptive. There's a world full of sounds, and musics, and I don't limit myself to any one area. Oh, by the way, I like Numan's MUSIC..and that's it. I'm not one of those, like I've encountered on the web, over time, who are just way to into HIM, the man, you know? I don't CARE what he had for lunch yesterday, and how fast he drove his whatever colored whatever kind of car, down whichever road he was spotted driving on, or details like that. My interest in him starts and ends with his MUSIC, and my signing up for the digest was mostly to keep up on that. Well, now that I've written this novel, hope you know me a bit better. Thanks, and all kinds of good stuff. May you all find a mint copy of the "Photograph" LP in a bargain bin at a record show for $10 like I did~ That's about the best wish I could come up with!! I just got back from University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Michigan, for a Forensics competition and I found a few interesting things and have a few suggestions on stores for anyone who's going to be in that area anytime soon.. First of all, I went to the greatest record store on earth: Wazoo Records. They had a copy of "Berserker" on vynal for $9 which I bargained down to $7 and snatched up, which meant I had to barrow money for dinner last night and breakfast and lunch today.. Oh well, I guess that's how things go. =) They also had a copy of "Isolate" for $6 on vynal, which I almost bought instead of "Berserker"... Second of all I went to Border Books and picked up "The Mix".. I still haven't listened to it all, mainly since it was my goal to call a friend, read my email and promptly crash until The Simpsons comes on; but I must say the bit that I've heard sounded good and I really like the packaging. (Purple is a good colour.) BTW, this Border Books was the only store on State Street with any new Numan; they had "Exile", "Premiere Hits" and some sort of other collection CD who's name slipped my mind.. So, I had a good trip.. It would've been much better if I got to stay there for about two weeks and was over 18, though, since The Jesus Lizard, Spoon, The Dirty Three and Gary (of course) were playing somewhat nearby in that time period, but life isn't fair I guess... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 May 1998 06:41:47 EDT From: WAR4PREZ Subject: New Collectible but Gary probably is going to be pissed off. Now I'm not sure if it's just mine but I see www.human.co.uk It should be www.Numan.co.uk To make matters a little worse this actually seems to be an address of another band called Human that is a UK industrial band. I wonder if these are going to be recalled once Gary finds out. It also reminds me of when Return of the Jedi came out and they had misprint Revenge of the Jedi posters. Most of those were recalled and their value went way up. Either way it's cool ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 May 1998 15:38:29 -0400 From: Dominic Chaumont Subject: New on the list ! It's 1:55 and about 20 minutes ago I was talking with Gemma and Gary outside the 9:30 club in DC...He met and chatted with fans for over a half hour!! The DC show sounded SOO much better than the Philly concert...crystal clear sound, same set list and Numan was absolutely commanding the stage! Gemma was up near the speakers and I was in the front row...we screamed for her to join us near the stage and she DID!!! I got Gemma's autograph and was informed that they were NOT staying in DC (!!) but hitting the road after the show...she ALSO let me know that Gary would meet fans outside the bus after the show..... I took about 2 dozen pictures of the show, Gemma, Gary after the show, and me with Gary!! I'll post them as soon as I get them back! On a interesting note, Gary informed me that it is possible that a US Live CD may be in the works with LA being the venue for the recording...you lucky lot!! Well, my dream is complete! I saw Numan live twice, met him, shook his hand, got his autograph and met his wife! What more can a guy ask for?? Andrew C. in the UK...I got your copy of the Mix autographed and it shall be in the post promptly :-D Take care all...if you have any questions about the show, please feel free to ask...I'll scan my autographs and pics of the show ASAP. Bye for now Living in Exile...now deciding the let the angels live :-) Rick in DC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 May 1998 12:47 -0600 (MDT) From: "Stephen.Austra-Beck" Subject: Numan gets his appreciation in the DJ scene To: numan digest I was reading an English club and DJ culture magazine a few weeks ago, and came across a review of 'Random 2'. I thought it was going to get slammed. The author was amused, citing Numan as "a techno pioneer who (I'm paraphrasing of course) used to dress as a robot, and has a league of life long fans called Numanoidswho also dress as robots". The album got respectable reviews (judge yourselves, I haven't heard it, and realize the dance music emphasis isn't in line with some tastes--I haven't heard it myself). I think country musicians should do a tribute to Numan................as Yello say, "of course I'm lying!!" //////// Stephen Austra-Beck ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 May 1998 17:08:38 -0700 (PDT) From: princess@cyberg8t.com (Miss Marlene ) Subject: NUMAN merchandise for sell at venues... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu >this may seem a silly question, but has anyone else noticed whether or not >the fan paraphenalia booths at the Numan show have been accepting plastic? >I am a bit of a hermit, and haven't been to a show for some time, so I >don't know if they(meaning the shirt dealers) are doing that these days. Not a silly question at all Paddy... Can someone who has already been to a show in the USA please tell us exactly what NUMAN merchandise is being sold at the venues and for how much? I dont know the story, but can anyone fill me in ? Gary's already said he doesnt like the idea od remixers etc etc, but this is a huge oppurtunity...The Prodigy main man has got what it takes to turn Numan's tunes into something enormous, something more up to date, and something more relevant for radio today... But does it lean more towards thats sound, or does it sound more like Random 2 ? Basically I thought TA was a total embarrassment, and I LOVED Random 2, so I dont want to make a dreadful mistake ! What I guess Im asking, from any tecno fans out there is, is it REAL techno ? Andy -- http://www.joekeith.dircon.co.uk/mouthfull.html -- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 May 1998 18:19:53 -0400 From: Terrence Thoman Subject: Welcome back Gary! To: Gary Numan Digest My account of the May 1 gig in Philadelphia: Here's the short version: Pre concert meeting with the digesters was great. Switchblade Symphony was okay. Gary KICKED ASS. Meeting Gary and Gemma back at their hotel after the show REALLY KICKED ASS! --- Up-side: Gary KICKED ASS! The family of Numan fans are the best. I came alone but left feeling like a had spent an evening among close friends. Thanks NumanBoy, Machman, Vince, John Stubblefield, Kat Silures, Bob Garr, Rick Stott, Jim & Anabel Collins. Wild child Iggy Pop had nothing on us this night. Met two fans from where I live (Harrisburg,PA) whom I never knew before. Meeting and talking with Gary was something that I had written off long a as something I would never get to do. I'm so grateful for his and Gemma's gracious and generous openness. Genuine best describes the encounter. --- Down-side: I hope Gary gets some compensation for the f*ck up on the tour t-shirts that are printed with www.HUMAN.co.uk. That URL points to a band called Human - a European industrial band. I thought $20 was a little pricey for the shirt, but I'd of paid a great deal more than $12.50 to be there so it all evens out. --- The long version: The evening started out with a great pre concert gathering at Starbucks coffeehouse. I think the most made comment was "Isn't it great to be able to sit around and talk about Gary and his music without getting blank expressions like - who the hell are you talking about?" Special thanks to Jim "The Machman" Napier for organizing this event. At 7:30 we left for the show and waited for the doors to open. Sporadic rain made waiting a bit of a pain in the ass but the young goths kept things visually interesting anyway. When the doors opened a few minutes before 8 we got front and center (thanks Bob) in the all standing room hall and waited. NumanBoy David Ellison gave us the lowdown on his Numan experience at Shepherds Bush. We were all getting really pumped. Switchblade Symphony came on about 9. I liked the sounds but the look was done much better by Siouxe Sioux and Lene Lovich years ago. During the break a guy from Culture Shock magazine took our picture. Does anyone know about this mag? I think he was a Numanoid by the end of the show. Vince relayed the songs from the song list during the setup. Finally, there he was -- Gary Numan -- front and center as orange lights pulsated and a low synth droned. This is what I'd been waiting for the better part of my adult life. First song 'Friends' - the band was intense and never slowed down. Gary rocked and danced (who said he can't dance) and gave us all those dark and mysterious poses and glances. He sang and we sang with him. The sound was terrific, the bass pounding, the lighting was good but not extravagant. I was a bit surprised to see that Gary did not play keyboards at all. Personal favorites played were Metal, We Are So Fragile, We Are Glass, Dark, and Down In The Park. By far the best show I've ever seen (though I'd probably say that had Gary come out, belched, and said goodnight). I waited outside the venue for a while with Jim & Anabel Collins until Bob gave us the scoop on Gary's hotel. After a twenty minute wait with about 8 others, the bus pulls in and out hops Gary, Gemma, Tony, Beryl, Ade and rest of the band, and the road crew. Wow! Gary and Gemma were so gracious to talk with us, sign autographs, take photos, etc., etc. with not one speck of pretentiousness, annoyance, or "hurry up and let's get this done". It was just like talk amongst friends. Truly a fantastic experience. By this time it was past 3am and I still had a two hour drive back to my wife and kids, so I said thank you one last time, wished Gary well on the rest of the tour and headed home. I'm still not sure it was just a dream, though that slap on the cheek I took from NumanBoy kinda makes me believe it was real. I took loads of pictures and I may post them to my as yet non-existent web site soon. Did I mention that Gary KICKED ASS? Don't let the light shine on me....
