I have read in a few previous posts, and on a few website... reffering to Gary Numan as "Gazza"... not to sound to much the ignorant mutant that I am, but what is this a reference too? We were talking about bands & people who had undeservedly lived on the success of a single song. We enthusiastically compiled an extensive list of one-hit wonders, and I thought 'sooner or later, some bastard is going to mention Gary Numan, and I'm going to have to have a fight.' But that arty guy number one says: 'You know who was really underrated? Gary Numan.' 'Yep,' says arty guy number two. 'His stuff was really original. Really ahead of its time.' 'Yep,' says arty guy number two again. 'And he's got a new album out. It's meant to be quite good.' Okay I know it isn't much, but if these two are any indication of public opinion, suddenly people are aware that Gaz is back, and it's reasonably hip to be a Numan fan. Who'd have thought it? Here's hoping this is the start of something good for Gary. He deserves it. Perhaps they view the British market as pretty much sorted , and that the USA might receive him more favourably , with greater potential to increase sales. Who knows? I certainly don't. One embarassing question. I count myself as a quite obsessive fan of Gary's studio work , owning every single track. Or so I thought. But the track Voix (mentioned in the concert reviews) rings no bells for me. What album is it on? Can anybody quote some of the more memorable lyrics to see if I can recall the song? Here's my conclusion: Disc One I hate the video edit of DD. This is unacceptable to cut this song to 3 and a half minutes. It's like a rape. Better just to take the album version, but don't sell out Gary!!! Voix: Why? Sounds awful, yet it's still better than whatever is played on the radio. Dead Heaven: Still, the best person to mix a Numan song is Numan himself! (I don't like The Mix at all!) It's a bit long, but like 'Slowcar to China's 9 minutes which are fabulous, this one is stretched to the 'bore' time. Cars: Cars live, 56th version... Disc Two DD Extended: Now this is what I call a remix. Makes me relive my childhood and think of the vinyl 12" remixes of Soft Cell, New Order, Thomas Dolby. Way to go Gary!!! Metal: 10/10!!! It doesn't have the power of the new Live version, but the best person to cover a Numan classic is also Numan himself. (I'm not really a fan of most of the Random covers). DITP: Wasn't really waiting for this one. DD Live: Just good to have. Conclusion, I had to have both discs, but I will only play the 2nd one. American touring To: numan@cs.uwp.edu We went to see Gary at the middle east last weekend and I have to say that it was one of the best performances ever. Having lived in the US for 3 years I had reaslised how many people remembered Gary fondly, but the fans were absolutley wild at the concert. It was great to see Gary back on the world stage, my only complaint (small) is the new version of We are so fragile - definately one of the best songs he has ever written, but much better performed with raw energy. The revamp of Friends and Are friends electric were another matter though - excellent! I was lucky enough to talk to Ade Orange and briefly meet Gary before sound check which made my day. From everything I saw and have heard, the first three shows were a massive hit - no surprise there. Anyway, what an amazing gig. My friend Anthony, who saw Numan three times (in l980 and 82) thought this was Numan's best gig to date. I would have never known that the opening song was FRIENDS, but man did it kick ass! In fact, Numan's band were all incredible, especially guitarist Steve Harris, who played fantastic and got into each song with the energy of a 16 year old hardcore band!! It was great to see Numan "thrashing" about the stage, but I did miss his classic obscure stares. The entire 90 minute set was such a great blend of new and old classics, my favorites being ME! I DISCONNECT FROM YOU, NOISE NOISE and FILMS. His songs from EXILE, to me, soudned much better live with this particular band backing him. I still can't believe they did FILMS--one of my favorite songs from the Pleasure Principle album. If you have any doubts about seeing this tour--forget them. Few artists can change their songs this drastically (in Numan's case, much more guitar-oritented) and still keep the feel of the old style. My breath was sucked right out of my lungs, especially during EVERY DAY I DIE and the incredible, grinding new version of METAL. GARY--RECORD WITH THESE GUYS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!! It was great to see a "classic concert-merchandise set up" for a change---the T Shirts are excellent, and the tour program was a real treat. Man, he better come back to the USA soon---16 plus years is way too long to wait for the coolest, most original, exciting live musician ever. She wore the same exact outfit Friday and Saturday nights. I certainly hoped it was laundered. She has no stage presence. Can anyone tell me how the hell they got the opening slot on this tour? Considering I live in the UK, I was prepared to wait a couple of weeks - guess what? It took SIX DAYS!! Bloody marvellous - and so cheap - with postage, it cost the equivalent of about 12 quid, which for a US only release (which I haven't been able to find over here) is excellent value I reckon. Needless to say, I'll definitely be using them again - oh, and the CD arrived in a box, not a padded envelope. Top marks CD Now - I can only echo what's been said about them already. Oh, the album? Well.....I only had the (dubious) benefit of listening to Techno Army once, but I think The Mix does big wee wees over it. Some songs sound like some of Random 2, some a bit Prodigy-ish - all in all though, this is the album I was expecting Random 2 to sound like - in fact I think with one or two exceptions, The Mix does big wee wees over Random 2 as well. Some tracks are a bit...ahem...eclectic...(She's Got Claws for one, Deadliner for another) but its far more listenable (to me) than those two albums mentioned above. Comments have been passed about the cover - for me, I think the use of photos is excellent; nice to see some pics from that era not seen before (except in Rod's private album - yeah I know!) :-) Maybe it would have been nice to have a bit of info on the Cleopatra artists doing the tracks, but definitely one of the better Numan album covers of late. I would do a track by track but we've just moved house and I'm up to my eyes in it. Overall though, if ya didn't like Random 2, then I wouldn't let it put you off buying The Mix. And if ya DID like Random 2, then I'd still suggest buying it - its not THAT different to what was being done on there...just tons better (IMHO). Cheers all! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu From: Scott Jordan on 05/08/98 11:28 AM O.K., I am a lurker on this list, but I HAVE to tell you about the Toronto show. This is my experience before and during the show, so if you want to skip it go ahead. Also, I don't mean to be pretentious, I just have no one to tell this to that gives a crap other than you guys! I flew into Toronto yesterday (May 7) afternoon and was picked up by a friend who is a huge fan of Numan's. We were going to go right to the area of the venue, but he decided to go to the local TV/music channel station where they have a t-shirt shop. We were wearing our Numan Digest shirts and this guy at the door wonders if we are with Gary! Nope, sorry...but he tells us that Gary is due to arrive there for an interview in the next 1/2 hour. Of all the luck. At the appointed time Gary, Gemma and the security guy "Big G" come walking down the street. We duly showed our appreciation to him and talked briefly. The interview took place out in the parking lot of the station and was conducted in an old MGB (I think Gary would have preferred a Corvette, don't you think?). During this we talked to Gemma who was fabulous - she mentioned the trouble Gary had in signing to a record label and the fact that they have been getting nasty letters from some Religious groups about Gary's lyrics (now, now, I don't want to start another religion thread, so take it easy....:) ). She also mentioned that the press in Britain is now more accepting of Gary and his music (is this true?). We discussed the set list with her and she mentioned the Pittsburgh show was rather subdued. After the interview Gary mentioned that the audience at the Pittsburgh show didn't really deserve the encore (sorry to you Pittsburgh fans, I'm just telling what the man said!). We assured him that WE would deserve it! After the interview we headed up to the venue. At the door an employee was standing. We jokingly asked if we could come in for the sound check, expecting a rousing NO....but, he said "I guess so". We needed no more prompting and were in there before he knew what was happening. We listened to the sound check for Gary and Switchblade symphony and then the unbelievable happened. The band members came over and introduced themselves to US. They were curious about our Numan Digest T-shirts (best bloody $20 I ever spent....). We really had a good 15 min. chat with David Brooks (Keyboards) and Steve Harris (guitar) and talked briefly with Ade Orange and the drummer (Richard Beasley). Apparently Steve Harris has done some tours with Blues/Jazz people and only started to play with Gary in Oct. (we went to the audition not knowing any Gary Numan material at all!). I fully intended to go the pre-show get-together, but I couldn't bring myself from leaving the venue - sorry! Being too sacred to leave the venue for fear of not being able to get back in we basically sat where we were until show time. Switchblade Symphony had one good song in my opinion (the first one) but the rest wasn't to my tastes. Gary came on at 11:30 and the place went stark raving nuts! It was a small venue (I think the band said it was their smallest one) and was packed but intimate. I won't go through the set list since this has been provided before and it didn't vary much from that, but I have to tell you we had two encores do to the screaming that went on after they went off stage (yes, my throat is sore). Encore songs were "We are so Fragile, Me! I Disconnect from You" and "We are Glass". My personal favourite songs were Everyday I Die (to which Gary's suggestive movements drew much attention from the ladies present!) , DITP and A Question of Faith. Ade Orange was pretty reserved but the rest of the band, including Gary, seemed to have a blast. The guitar player practically bounced off stage. This was the best show I have seen in years. For all of those who have tickets, and for all of those who will be graced with Gary's presence in the future (Oz, etc.) you are in for a spectacular show. Hi to all of those whom met at the show - I hope to see you at another show sometime! Sorry for the length of this post, too, but I just had to tell some people who would appreciate it.
