Mitchell Gore ( Vrcadia@aol.com) asks: >I have read in a few previous posts, and on a few website... reffering to Gary >Numan as "Gazza"... not to sound to much the ignorant mutant that I am, but >what is this a reference too? Don't feel bad - I never knew either. NumanBoy told me it's a general nickname for "Gary" in the UK. In fact, I was recently reminded by a friend that one of the characters in The Full Monty was named Gary, and they referred to him a couple times as "Gazzer." Tom Gorham (jargon@easynet.co.uk) says: >I was in an Edinburgh pub last Saturday night with a couple of people who >could loosely be described as arty indie sort of people (which partly >explains why I've never admitted to being a Numan fan to them). I found this surprising, since "arty, indie sort of people" are exactly the types I would imagine would be Numan fans. Maybe arty, indie people are different in the UK and the US? Glenn Bridges (Glenn.Bridges@asda.co.uk) asks: >One embarassing question. I count myself as a quite obsessive fan of >Gary's studio work , owning every single track. Or so I thought. But >the track Voix (mentioned in the concert reviews) rings no bells for >me. What album is it on? Can anybody quote some of the more memorable >lyrics to see if I can recall the song? Voix is on the album New Anger (which in the UK was called Metal Rhythm). Maybe it wasn't included on the UK version? Anyway, here's a few words that may jog your memory: I don't like young girls, I don't like boys I like some bitch to scare me, I like that noise I don't like secrets, I don't like God I don't like people, When they say I'm things I'm not I don't need opinions and rumours, I don't need a voice in the dark I don't need to listen to strangers, I don't need to tear out my heart One stranger, one heartbeat, one love is forever One picture, one morning, one tear lasts forever Hope that helps you. IMHO, it's definitely worth remembering that song! Especially that first verse; he really grabbed my attention with that one!"I like some bitch to scare me"? Hmm, I wonder what goes on in that bedroom? ;-) Sam ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 19:54:26 +0100 From: Mark Subject: can i join the mailing list please ?? Old records, clothes, toys, books etc. It's kinda like a flea market. In the UK it tends to be a cover for people selling stolen goods, bootlegs and old tat, but you can still spot the odd bargain or two :-) Gary Hough Operations Manager - Prestel Online www.prestel.co.uk Prestel On-Line - No 1 Internet Service Provider 1997 as voted by Internet Magazine ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 23:58:46 +0100 From: "machman" Subject: cars sheet music To: Does anyone have the sheet music for cars i just need the first few bars Thanks in advance machman@dial.pipex.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 22:16:57 -0500 From: paddygav@kcnet.com (Paddy) Subject: Chicago show To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Is it just me, or did anyone else have trouble with Gary's vocals at the Metro? I actually came a away a little disappointed, 'cause from my vantage point (I was sort of near the back), it was at times like an instro show. Still a joy to finally get to see him, flailing about on his guitar. Quite different from all the other live stuff I have heard (Living Ornaments,White Noise, etc), but a kick in the ass none the less. I do have to agree with the naysayers on Switchblade Symphony. What a bore. Kind of reminded me of X-Ray Spex. Oh well, they had a lot of fans there too. I never saw anyone at Uncommon Ground, but at the show I met a lurker who gave me the finger for stoking one of the many religious threads (hi Craig). Maybe I will see more of you kids next year! Did anyone get to meet Gary after the show? I really wanted to, but I had no idea where to go. Recently I was reading back copies of the digest, and saw how GN was being compared to Neil Young. Somebody said the reason why NY was more popular than GN was because his songs were being done by average pub bands. It then said that Jo The Waiter would be good, and think a lot of the early Tubeway Army stuff would be good. But try entertaining an Irish pub with Sleep by Windows or Berserker! That made me laugh, but try imaging entertaining an Irish crowd, all having drunk 10pints of Guinness with the following setlist: Replicas, M.E. , Conversation, The Aircrash Bureau, Telekon, I Dream of Wires, The Joy Circuit, Slowcar to China, Cry the Clock Said, I Assassin, The Iceman Comes, My Dying Machine, Pump it Up, ........ Also people like having their favourite songs played at their funeral. But I wouldn't be able to at mine as everyone else there would die! (It's I Die:You Die) Someone also said for the next Random, imagine Mariah Carey doing My Shadow In Vain. How about Celine Dion doing Friends? Howard" Subject: jerry v's un-asked for input, goddammit! here it is!!!!! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello all- The midd-tenn show is a no go for now. There is a "legendary (refusal to retire)" club band in this area with a web site. This band covers cars among it's many 80's covers. The club considering booking Numan here asked his opinion. He apparrently said he didn't think Numan could draw enough of a crowd to justify the cost of putting on the show here. I bet the asshole "Mel" (Mel & the Party Hats) doesn't even realize all that's going on with Numan these days. Well, because they tend to draw a consistently large crowd at this venue, their oppinion carries weight. I'll work on that, especially if there happens to be another US tour later this year. I got THE MIX. I happen to like JLAB's version of "Cars" a lot, but the rest of the CD is just OK. I also finaly got RANDOM 2. What a freakin' disappointment!!!! It's like The Orb's contribution to RANDOM, it's barely, if at all, recognizable as anything Numan ever did! Dave Clarke's version of "Cars" is the only thing really in character. The rest of it sounds like some computer musings prerecorded with no thought to Numan or his music, and as an afterthought some sample of a Numan song is thrown in sparingly to justify a Numan title for submission. Fuck you people who did RANDOM 2!!!!! You just don't fucking get it! I can't wait for the Atlanta show at The Masquerade! We're having a pre-show meeting at The Vortex on Moreland in Little Five Points from about 5-9pm. Come have burgers, chicken, beer, or whatever with us there. Maybe we can once and for all settle this religion debate....just kidding!!!!!;-) Let's have some fun, get to know each other, and overwhelm the Masquerade en mass! I'm on break from school, and loving it. I'll be back in my routine soon. I use the computer labs at school for my internet stuff and e-mail. Right now I'm spending a fortune at Kinko's doing e-mail. If there is a long delay to my replies to your mail, this is the reason. Gary Numan - Exile Gary Numan may have been in a self imposed exile for a while, but he has given himself and his fans a pardon with his latest album. The music is very brooding and stark, almost gothic. There are no doubts about the intents behind this trip. The opening track, "Dominion Day", sets the the tone with it's dark guitars and pads, augmented with a steady drumbeat and dark processed vocals. Tracks like "Prophecy", "Innocence Bleeding", "Absolution", and "Exile" are filled with a similar haunting feel. There's no mistaking Gary's vocals for anyone else's. Exile is a wonderfully moody album with strength, defiance, and honesty. It takes the listener back to the time when gothic music was filled with moody pads, strong emotive guitars, pounding drums, and vocals that made the hair on the back of your neck stand up. In Exile, electronic and gothic join together in glory once again. This is not just another comeback albumfrom a once-great artist, it's a great album from a still-great artist. -Robert Seinrow ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 16:40:43 +0000 From: "b. koski" Subject: more numan in the public eye... Also, my getting out o town after the show was a real rush, as some of you will find out through individual posts!! I hope that many of you post me!!! Gary, love that coat!!!!!!! man, did you have it custom made???? Oh, but you really do need to FIRE the sound guy! I really think your band is great, and this show is the most powerful example of how your music can be, BUT, I really want to hear YOUR voice. That is you! OK, and on final note. Nearly 9 years ago, I was spending some time with a girl, and like always, I would spend much time driving around with Numan in the tapedeck. I never thought much about my having an influence on anyone, but to my great surprise, there she was in Chicago!!!! I had not seen her in the nearly 9 years, and she recognised me, and what a surprise! Also, I took a friend that this was her first concert ever, what a treat eh? Take care all, Mark A Hubbard P.S. I flew up to Cleveland that morning from San Antonio Texas, arrived there about 2pm, with plans of FINDING the venue (Odeon) and then going to grab a bite to eat. However when I passed the club, there were already people lined up for the show (well 3 ppl). I thought to myself, like hell I am not getting in line now, and miss being on the front row after waiting since I was 9! Fortunately found parking right by the venue. I chatted with the other guys in line for a while and looked at the old memorabilia they had to be signed, when at about 4pm a Taxi pulled up and out popped Gary, Gemma, and the entire band! Gary stayed and signed autographs for the four of us for about 5 minutes, and he was very pleasant. He commented to me that the other gigs "Had been quite good, actually!" He signed my copy of his book, and a Berserker cd, in red...looks really good!! Also talked to Ade for a bit when he went for a bite to eat, and also met Tony and Beryl as they walked in later (carrying shopping bags!) 2 of the other guys wandered off, leaving me and one other guy standing there, he had to take a wee, so I was FIRST in line!! Even though it was 4 hrs till the doors even opened, I didn't care..."I" was first in line for my FIRST NUMAN SHOW!!!!! With about an hour and a half before show time, more ppl began to line up, some had Numan Digest t shirts on (great folks) They told me all about what the previous shows had been like and meeting Gary, and how awful the opening act was......It was a good time just listening to others Numan stories. About 5 min before the doors opened, my brother showed up from driving from Buffalo NY, he got there late because it was his last day of class (he graduates this next week...what a way to go out!). Well, I let my brother cut in line with me, just as the doors opened..so nobody really seemed to mind (at least I didn't ask). We both ran in and got front row center....A DREAM COME TRUE! I did leave my coveted spot in line to buy myself and my bro a T-shirt, but there was no trouble getting my place back.....thank Numan...(god). I didn't really mind the opening band too much....some of then songs were not too bad, but they could work on their stage show a bit.....drummer looked like he was having a time though! The stage was cleared rather quickly, and soon the lights were down, then the intro "Closer" began to rumble through the speakers....we could see the band take stage, Gary fight in front of us...with a menacing stare, and then "Friends" began to wail, and there he was..my Idol, my musical inspiration, my life long passion, MY GOD!!!!! GARY NUMAN!!! Dressed in all black, wielding a Gibson Les Paul like a weapon......I was in awe. The set consisted of....(I got a copy of the set list from a roadie) Closer/Friends Dominion Day Cars Films Question of Faith Voix Everyday I Die (complete with hand gestures!!) Dark Noise Noise An Alien Cure Down in the Park Absolution (my bros' fav) Dead Heaven Metal Are Friends Electric (with MASSIVE audience participation on the woah-oohs!) Encore: Replicas We are so Fragile (EMF version) ME I disconnect from you We are Glass During the show my bro and I could see Gemma (pronounced Jemma), rocking out on the side by the side barricade, she looked incredible with her "CAT EYE contacts" She was really quite striking! When the show was over my brother yelled to Gemma to come over, he complimented her oh her design of Gary's costume, and signed his exile cd book with "TO Scott, Be happy, loads of love Gemma Webb XXXX. I showed her a picture of my Gym (I am a PE teacher) where I had painted the Numa Logo on my wall. She said COOL! Could I have this?? So I did, of course! My brother told her I had always wanted a tattoo of that, and he asked if she had any?? She said no...not of Gary, but I do have an Egyptian Eye on me Bum, to which she proceeds to SHOW US!!!! it was actually at the small of her back...(could not believe I forgot my camera!!!! We left then and grabbed a bit to eat, I had not had anything for over 24 hr., and was beginning to feel a bit tired. We went back to the venue 30 min later to find about 150 ppl waiting in a line to have things signed. So we stood over by the tour bus and figured we would just watch. The band came out first, and chatted with us for a while, mostly about what they had seen here (Niagara Falls the day before) and what the SHOULD see if they get a chance. David Brooks stayed and talked for the LONGEST time, he was very nice. Then Gary, and Gemma came out, he stopped to sign autographs, but Gamma walked straight up to my brother and I and just started talking to us. At one point she was signing an autograph, and I saw her wedding ring, and told her how beautiful I thought it was, she said thank you, and TOOK IT OFF so I could read the inscription, reading "Not even God can separate us" She left me holding it, for a while, too....which made me very nervous, I had to keep looking down to make sure I was not standing over a sewer drain or something! It was really a very beautiful ring, almost a medieval style. She stood and talked to is for awhile then, she asked where we were from, and I told her how I had flown up from Texas to be here for the show, and she asked if I was going to the Dallas Houston shows, and seemed pleased that I was, and said "Oh No" when by brother told her he could not. By this time Gary had finished with all of the other fans, and began to walk by, Gemma stopped him saying "Gary, come meet these two, they have been waiting so patiently, he cam right over signed my brothers CD book, and my brother told him how much he enjoyed the show, and that he was a pilot , Gary seemed to light up a bit as they talked about aircraft they had flown, and Gary mentioned wanting to buy a Russian YAK, which my brother, knows a guy who owns one, Gary became really animated then using his hands telling all of the maneuvers that he can do in one, like a 16 point roll, all the while he was making sounds like a little boy, they then had to go, and my brother told him "Hey Gary, be careful" and Gary said "Of course! Always!" with a huge smile.....Gemma told me "see you in Dallas" and winked with those FANTASTIC CAT EYES!, they hopped the bus........and they were gone... I turned to look around...my brother and I were the only ones there....I was one of the first there...and one of the last to leave.....it was a perfect evening, better than I could have possibly imagined, I feel complete now in my life, as one of my most loftiest goals has been met. Gary and Gemma were dropped off very close to the interview time but he took a minute or so to speak to us anyways. I had the chance and pleasure to sit and talk with Gemma the whole time even if I was trying hard not to monopolize her , thanking her for the influence she had on Gary's music. I told her about not being able to meet him after the last Premier Hits show and she offered me her seat so that I could see better , my view being blocked by his huge bouncer. She obviously understood how I felt and is one classy , sweet woman. She also made me promise to stick around after the gig. After the interview Gary stayed to chat and sign autographs graciously before going to get ready for the show. I went back to my hotel to drop off my copy of PTTA which was now signed. 8:30 pm...Lee's Palace.Palace in name only as it's rather dingy looking, lots of beer and cigarette smoke ( and I'm a smoker myself...) but they do seem to have good acts and are well known in Toronto. Switchblade Symphony were ok , much better than whatever act Gary had on on the last Premier Hits gig.The crowd was a bit impatient but nevertheless attentive to them.Mostly older fans but a lot of younger ones too , in their 20's. 11:30 pm. Gary comes on stage ; it's pandemonium ! I don't think he was expecting such a strong reaction from the smallest venue yet. We're packed shoulder to shoulder and I stand on a chair off the side the whole time. The light show might be absent but the performances are incredible , making up for it a bit ; I can imagine what it would be like the way he usually tours. Richard Beasley is drumming up a storm , David Brooks' hair is flying all over as he pounds his synths on the upbeat songs , Steve Harris is all over the place while Ade Orange is like an anchor to Gary's right , he might not move much but I suspect he's having a great time.Gary owns the stage and us and the crowd loves it. I think we might have had 19 instead of 18 songs ( correct me if I'm wrong here ).It was simply an amazing and energetic show. 1:30 am The show is over and I wait outside with a few fans , telling a select few not to leave right away.Guess who's there also ? NASH THE SLASH ! who still loves Gary and attended the gig like any fan. He was incognito (ie no bandages !) so I didn't recognize him until the guy I was speaking to pointed him out. That guy was Chris , from a band which is also on CLEOPATRA but I forgot their name.He wants to give one of his CDs to Gary. 2:00 am The tour bus pulls up and Gary and the band come out of Lee's Palace.I get to meet everyone which is great. Ade Orange is the most amiable fellow you can imagine , completely different than on stage and not aloof at all. Steve and David both grab a hot dog from the street vendor and chat with everybody too. After a few minutes in the bus Gary comes back out to meet us. I get my second autograph and have my picture taken with him.Gary is open and friendly and he admits that he's again loosing money on this tour ( I miss by how much though ). And they might tape one of the gigs for a future live album....Keep your fingers crossed people ! This tour is awesome to hear and you better have a good reason not to have attended. The new versions of our old favorites have been updated and the new material goes down well. A most excellent tour that will open a lot of doors for Gary. It's a given that we wont have to wait as long for the next one which will be in bigger venues I'm sure ; all the shows have been sold out or on their way to be... I know this was lengthy but I wanted it complete for all you fans who missed out. Don't despair , he'll be back. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 16:12:34 -0700 From: obscure@blueneptune.com Subject: thank you! I thought it might be kind of a let-down for my first-ever live Gary Numan show. Boy was I wrong... The show was nothing short of phenomenal. I had a damn good view of the stage (not that there was a bad one in the club) and was about 50 feet from THE MAN himself. All I can say is I was floored. My greatest fantasies of a Numan show came true as Gary and his stomp-ass little troup ROCKED through almost all of my favorite tunes (the only notable exception being my favorite song of all time - "I Die: You Die" which, as most of you know, he didn't play). And - Best of all - Gary played guitar for more than half of the tunes! I have always loved Gary's guitar playing style (no matter what HE thinks of it) and it was a dream come true to watch him play it. My brother kept looking at me throughout the show and yelling in my ear: "Are you SURE this is Gary Numan?!?" I just smiled like a maniac and screamed my lungs out between songs. The show kicked Major Ass. It was pure power-house rock and roll with Gary bounding around the stage, banging his head to the beat and seemingly very happy with himself. I could prattle on and on like this for ever... but I'll spare you lot. Suffice it to say that he surpassed all of my wildest expectations and left me personally breathless. What a showman! Unfortunately, my brother and I had to book it back to the Metro (the last train leaves the U-Street station at 11:45PM) and didn't get to hang around with the rest of the hard core Numan faithful. We sat on the Metro train with about 9 or 10 other fans and we all raved until our stop came. I feel so proud and priveledged to have been there to finally see him perform. I have even posted my tickets to the show on my website (http://home.earthlink.net/~damrat/Numan). What a night! One last note: A big tip of the (I Assassin-style) fedora to all the Major-League-Numanites who made the trip all the way from Merry Old England to catch the show! The depth of your dedication (and insanity) is an inspriration to us all!! I really do hope this comes off, as it will do Gary a lot more good than the rumoured work with Wayne Hussey, which would frankly have been embarrassing. I dont know what the plans are, either Gary will contribute to the next Prodigy album, or maybe they will do something on an equal level, or perhaps Liam will produce the next Numan album (everything he touches turns to gold these days!) Whatever shape the collaboration takes, its probably the most exciting thing that Gary could do, as The Prodigy are easily the greatest live band I have ever seen. I talked about meeting Steve Harris (the guitarist) and followed it up by saying "we went to the audition not knowing any Numan stuff" Of course, I meant HE went to the audition. I, myself, have never auditioned for Gary *laugh*. Hope you weren't confused. Please ignore my other typos - at that pont I was working on 1 1/2 hr sleep out of the the previous 24 hours. - Scott. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 20:18:11 -0500 From: machman@interaccess.com (Jeff Tolva) Subject: Tour bits and pieces To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello all! I just got back from my 4th and last gig (Chicago) on Gary's US/Canada tour, and "the man" is in top performing gear; and the band hasn't sounded better thus far. If you're still yet to see them play, you have alot to look forward to. Gary has been doing autograph signings/photos after each and every show so far, no matter if there's 15 people waiting around (as was the case in Toronto) or if there's 100+ people waiting around (as was the case in Cleveland and Chicago). Gary takes a break for half an hour to an hour after the gig, then goes to either his tour bus or just inside the venue doors for autographs and photos with fans. He doesn't leave the venue until everyone who was waiting has had a chance to chat or get something signed. This is one of the best examples of why I'm a Gary Numan fan...he could be exhausted from the night's show and road travel, but he'll not let anyone leave disappointed after waiting around to speak with him or get some autographs. The band (Steve Harris, David Brooks, Ade Orange, and Richard Beasley) are usually hanging around immediately after each performance, are quite easy to chat to. These guys are the friendlyest bunch you'd every want to meet too. Occasionally, you can even spot Beryl, Tony, or Gemma after the shows as well. They are also quite nice to meet and have a chat with. The set list is quite powerful; and Gary and the band are in top form thus far! You can visit Joey Lindstrom's World Wide Webb website for all the up to date set lists, etc. I won't bore this list with my own encounters with the above mentioned people, but suffice it to say that I will never ever forget them and this US/Canada tour! My only advice to any other fanatical autograph/photograph seekers (like myself), is that being a polite and curtious fan goes a long way with these people. For me, it meant giving them a bit of privacy and "room to breathe" when they look like they needed it. Try not to bring along your entire vinyl collection for autographs as some fans have. Just be thoughtful to their situation and they'll usually go out of their way to accommodate just about any fan requests. Best of luck to everyone still yet to see Gary on tour!
