Does anyone know what character is Gary's favorite from the SIMPSONS? I forgot to ask him this essential question of mine. And does he use a Mac or PC? But there is one mistake I made there. I used one roll of film and for some god for saken reason my camera lens was not open. My crappy 35mm doesn't have a lock on it. If anyone took pictures if it wouldn't be trouble could you post them on a web site or email them if you have a scanner. If someone could send negatives that would be better I'd pay for the S&H. Also I met one person from the digest there but forgot his name. He has glasses and a goatee. I saw Hoppy but she went into the ladies room and I didn't see her come out. I also saw a gorgous blond in the very front that new the words to practically every song. Every second he was on stage I couldn't take my eyes off of him. Every song, every word, every riff, every beat was tearing me up inside. I had a hard time trying to not break down during A Question of Faith, Voix, Noise Noise and Everyday I Die. I couldn't really have asked for a better set list. Well, except seeing Him play every work He has ever written. Pontiac, MI was by far the best show out of the three. The venue (7th House) was extremely small; probably only about 400 people packed the place. What I liked most of all was the amount of hardcore Numan fans that were present. I think over half the people in the place knew most, if not all, the songs performed; and knew them so well that the synchronized hand gestures of the audience brought the show to a whole new level of intensity. The stage was basically a platform against a far wall of the room and was so small that the band had to exit stage left, down some stairs and through the side of the audience. It took a while for the encores waiting for the band to come back through the main floor and back onto the stage. Gary smiled a lot and the whole band was intensely energetic. It's been a long time since I've seen a band perform with so much enthusiasm that you could really tell that they were not only working hard but having the time of their life in the process. I could tell that Gary appreciated knowing that most of the crowd were devoted fans. I would have liked to know how he felt coming over to the States to perform these shows not knowing the extend of his popularity. After the show, my friend and I decided to check out this place called "Velvet." I think I was the only Numanoid there (at least with any visible signs of being one, e.g., the official Exile tour shirt). It was some sort of low-key rave / DJ club. The upstairs was boring, but the downstairs was kickin' a little. I had to leave after a few hours. Anyway, I walked out to my truck (Honda CR-V), got in, started it, put it in reverse and had to hit my brakes because I saw people behind it. I looked closer and saw that Gary was walking around with a few people, including Gemma, behind my truck! I thought to myself that I might have accidentally run over Gary Numan! That was really scary. I wouldn't want to be the one to take the rap for that. I'd have to kill myself. Back to the show reviews. Cleveland was good, mainly because it was the first time to ever see Him live and in color. I felt Chicago was a better show, but that might have been because I was front and center. I was disappointed that He did not perform We Are Glass in Chicago. I wonder why? I liked the crowd at the Cleveland show a lot more than Chicago, but that might have been because I was next to several extremely annoying "fans" who wouldn't shut up and stop making nonsense comments about everything. I had wished I had 3 bullets. Vocals... hmmmm.., I wonder what the sound guy was smoking? I had a hard time hearing all the vocals at all 3 shows. I think in Chicago somebody finally turned them up for the second half of the show. Thanks to Gary and the crew one more time. I hope to see you again in October / November. -- Matthew Oldland Feiwell & Hannoy, P. C. But what is good is the price of the set. stlg39.99 for 5CDs , digitally remastered and B-sides included and all, which I think is wonderful value for money (and as I am a student, I get 10% off, so it'll only be stlg36 for me). I also have 4 cases for Metal Rhythm (and to a lesser extent, Outland) to be re-released. 1. New fans , like myself who want Gary's complete back catalogue on CD, and cannot get without great difficulty. 2. I know of 2 people (and I bet there are more) who have had their copy stolen and cannot find a replacement due to the rarity of it. 3. Many people did not have CD players in 1988 but have got one since (I didn't get one until 1994), but can't upgrade this album to CD due to it being long deleted. 4. I am one of you now. My name's Sean ("Hi Sean") and as I recall, I first heard Gary Numan over the loudspeakers in the student center of my high school (I'll leave how long ago this was as an exercise for the reader). Whatever radio station it was... it *sounded* like the dj said, "Here's something new by the Cars". So I paused in my bantering with my punk friends to listen... but it wasn't the Cars. It was far better, and unlike anything I'd heard before. (And if you don't know what it was, we're both on the wrong mailing list :) ) Very quickly, "The Pleasure Principle", "Replicas", and "Tubeway Army" (the last two not easy items to find at that time in deepest darkest suburban New Jersey) became part of my then rapidly-expanding record collection. And his appearance on Saturday Night Live was the second time I exclaimed "That's the act I wanted to do!" (The first time was during Devo's SNL performance the year before.) My punk friends and I formed a band not too long after, and one of the songs we had a go at was a guitar-based arrangement of "Cars"... thank whatever you may thank there are no recordings of it. Since then, I have continued to write and record my own music. I play guitar, bass, four-finger keyboards (not all fingers on the same hand, thanks to the magic of multitrack recording), and I used to play drums ages ago, but mostly settle for programming various obsolete machines. My basic knowledge of songwriting and song structure I attribute directly to the early musics of Gary Numan and the Ramones. Make of that what you will. I follwed Gary faithfully through to "I, Assassin". For whatever reason, I didn't get "Warriors" when it came out (I have it now tho!)... and we all know what happened to Gary after that. I blame myself. Just like I didn't buy "Ain't Love Grand" by X, making Billy Zoom quit the band and destroying their career. Fast forward to a couple months ago... I hear Gary Numan is going to be touring the States. Goldangit, I never got to see him back then, I'm going now!! I run out and get the new album, it's Numan all right, the production seems a little flat, I blame the drum machine, but that's neither here nor there... I go to the Irving Plaza NYC show May 2, and as has been said before on this list, Gary Numan Kicks Ass. The last thing I expected was for Gary Numan to take the stage wielding a Les Paul and flinging his hair around like he was Marc Bolan. It was FANTASTIC. And "Exile" works much better live. One thing I regret, I wish I'd found this list *before* the show... from some of your stories, I gather I and my friend Ian were standing right next to several of you! Did any of you see a 6 ft. bearded priest nursing a vodka and tonic? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu fellow numanoids, on may 11, 1998 i met gary numan, his wife, his band, his parents in chicago and experienced the greatest day of my life. some of you vets from years ago may remember my drunken rants on the list and the infamous argument i had with gary over his headbanging. i've been a loyal and somewhat psychotic numanoid since i was eight years old (27 now) and have a ridiculously large numan collection. i am the worst of the worst numanoids. anyway, when my girlfriend Laura handed me our Numan tickets i wept for a half an hour realizing that i would finally see him live. on monday, may 11, 1998 i walked up the street to the metro at noon. i live three blocks away. convenient. :-) i waited for about an hour directly across the street at a burger joint for the bus to arrive. it did. through the window i saw the back of Gary's head looking out the other window to see the venue he would be playing that evening. i yelled "GARY!!!" twice until he turned around and saw me. he smiled, i froze in disbelief. my lifelong hero just smiled and waved at me. then Gemma stuck her head out the window and i said "hi Gemma!" "hello!" she said. anyway, i crossed the street to get ready to approach him as the bus parked. my entire body went numb and i was about to literally pass out when i noticed Jeff Tolva (the machman) and long time news member Deanna coming at me from across the street. being very close friends for years i beckoned them to hurry over to me before i hit the street in a daze. they comforted me by saying everything would be fine as they guided me to the bus door. i looked up and saw Gemma again as she said from the bus window "hello again!" and all i could say was "hi" in a very boyish way. finally the doors opened and Gary came off the bus. i didn't know where i was, what year it was, my name, etc... he looked my way and i managed to get the words out... "Gary, could i bother you for an autograph?" i'd rehearsed this for weeks. "sure... alright" he said in his very soft, innocent manner. he approached me as i stumbled through my bag to pull out my three rarest albums for him to sign. the blue album, the down the park 12" and the illegal german comp 'photograph'. i muttered out some words through my numb lips like "i've been a fan all my life" "i've been waiting for this moment all my life" "thank you for all of the music" "i can't believe you're in front of me" "blah, blah, blah.." i was shaking and dropped my pen. he was happy to sign everything (including the new book) and was a bit surprised when i took off my jacket, rolled up my sleeve and asked "would you sign my arm so i can go get it tattoed in today?" he smiled and said "yeah!.. alright!" he held my arm and asked "how big?" "the whole thing" i said. his autograph filled up nearly 3/4 of my forearm. i looked at him, shook his hand and thanked him for fulfilling a lifelong dream. he smiled and went into the metro. i looked at Jeff and Deanna, grabbed them both, and wept on their shoulders. but that's not all!!! Jeff Tolva and i were talking with Ade Orange about where to find a birthday card for his girlfriend. there was nowhere within walking distance and i offered to take him in a cab as i was about to be off to get my autograph tattooed in. Gary came over and overheard us and asked where he could buy a digital camera. Ade had already agreed to come with Jeff and i so i mentioned there was a shop we could look at nearby. he agreed to come and asked us to "hang on aminit!" so he could tell his people where he was going. I WAS GOING SHOPPING WITH GARY NUMAN!!! i couldn't believe it. i was going to take Gary around the city i grew up in! i was in a daze. i kept saying to myself "i can't fucking believe it, i can't fucking believe this". he came out a minute later and told Gemma he couldn't go because he had to do an interveiw so she should go with us in his place. that was still good enough for me. Gary Numan entrusted Jeff Tolvav (the machman) and me, scorbie, to take his wife and keyboard player out on the town!!! well, we did. we took Gary's wife and Ade shopping. WOW! after about an hour i went off and got the tattoo while Jeff took them back to the Metro. Gemma actually forgot her film at Walgreens and Jeff went back to retrieve it. whattaguy! when i got back Deanna was waiting outside to escort me into the metro saying "Gemma is so thankful for your help that we can all watch the soundcheck". i couldn't believe it. well, we watched the souncheck. Gemma ran up to me to see the tattoo and as i was showing her Gary noticed from the stage and i held up my arm yelling "it's done!" he smiled bashfully. anyway, we went back outside after giving much thanks to Gemma for her hospitality and waited in line for what was the best show i'd ever seen. we were dead center stage and got sweat on by Gary, sang along and did all the on time air punching that all the english concert videos taught us. Dave Carlson (MidgeUre@aol.com) and i kept on looking at eachother, in tears, saying "this is it. it's a Gary Numan concert". we couldn't stop grabbing or hitting eachother to make sure we were really there. i was fortunate to have my lovely girlfriend there to hold me up when the lights went out and Gary came on. tears were pouring down my face and i was shaking. my lifelong dream was happening. i got the autographs, the tattoo, his unfinshed water bottle (which i drank from) the set list, and more than i ever dreamed of. i also am the manager of the keyboard department at guitar center so i had a reserved spot in the balcony which i neglected, was on the guestlist which meant my tickets are intact and also had a lengthly conversation with Gary about Polymoogs, Arp Oddyseys, Korg Prophecys and Z(ed)1s. Thank You Gary for the greatest day of my life. Aaron Hannum (scorbie) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 17:08:48 +0100 From: Mark Subject: New to the mailing list .. Hi !! Although i've been on the Net for year or 2, i never tried any mailing lists, but i just _had_ to join in with this one,. I have always been (as every fan hopes) his number-one fan, and i spend a lot of time indeed thinking about, and listening to Gary + his music, it is my life - i even wrote a letter to Gary Numan when i was about 15 or so, telling him how much his music helped me and to just say _thanks_!! - i did'nt really get a reply ( i did'nt really expect one ) but got a very pleasant reply from Beggars Banquet thanking me for the letter, saying they would pass it on to Gary .... but, of course..... I am a Bass Player, and have been for over 8 years, i was in a band who (really) modelled ourselves on, yep, Tubeway Army. The singer was just as big a Gary nut as i was a Paul Gardiner nut, and we got on great, we soon discovered our mutual interest and set about forming a small band etc. My favourites were 'That's too bad' and 'The Aircrash Bereau', and of course, 'Please Push no more ' lovely bass lines. so, my whole style is dedicated to Paul Gardiner after studying what little info there is about him. i can't play my old fretless too well at all, i can _just_ about play 'she's got claws' - if ya dont listen too hard !! :) I am hoping to put together a Web page Dedicated to the Paul Gardiner in particular, but i dont want to offend anyone in doing so, so hopefully i will get some comments as to whether this might be a good idea. but that is'nt why i joined the mailing list - i just hope to listen in and maybe join - in with a chat about Gary And Paul and just have some fun and learn with some fellow nut's !! I've never seen him play before or was a devoted fan until seeing this concert. Gary had so much energy, charisma, and personality. He looked great and never stopped moving. The crowd was very responsive and showed Gary a lot of respect and therefore we were treated to a long set with three encores. He seemed quite pleased and happy with the warm response. I originally decided to go to the concert on behalf of my friend Katie Musser, who lives in Hawaii and has been a Gary Numan freak for years, and she knew he wasn't touring the islands. I was so impressed with Numan's stage persona that I'm glad that I went for whatever reasons and would definitely see him again if he should grace our city again. P.S. Thanks ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 19:56:10 -0700 From: Ralph Ferrin Subject: Seattle Show To: "numan@cs.uwp.edu" I've never contributed to the digest, nor have I ever written any "fan mail" of any kind. But last night I got to see Gary live for the first time, so I had to make an exception. Like most on the digest, I've been a big Gary fan pretty much since the beginning (Tubeway Army). I even like Machine and Soul! So this show meant a lot to me. But I was kind of anticipating being the minority who felt that way. I was pleasantly surprised. First off, the show was completely sold out. And I mean really really packed. And no-one was selling tickets outside. No one was leaving. Everyone was talking about it. And unless you know how things are in Seattle now, you can't understand how significant that is. Seattle is a really burned out, almost apathetic music scene. People don't go to shows as much. Not many good shows come to town. And usually the crowds aren't very into it or appreciative. This crowd was very much into it. Very loud displays of appreciation during and between songs. Everyone singing along. And no one was milling about. Everyone stayed riveted to their spot through the whole show, and even all the encores (there were 4 I think). The sound was really great. Sounded way better than most of the CD's actually. The vocals could have been louder, but that is really really nit-picking. The new-stylings for the old songs were a lot of fun. And the new songs were way better than the CD's. Very big and heavy sounding. And Gary was clearly having a very good time. He was very animated, and he actually sounded great. On some of the live CD's he seems to go through a warm up period, and in the beginning of the show he doesn't sound as good as the end. But at this show he sounded very good all the way through. He seemed very confident. And he seemed happy with the enthusiastic appreciation displayed by the crowd. Anyway, it was a great show. It wasn't like those reunion or nostalgia shows. It felt like a significant event. Lot's of new and old fans enjoying a current legend. Sorry for rambling. But this is an uncharacteristic display already, so why not be excessive. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 22:13:39 -0700 From: obscure@blueneptune.com Subject: SF preview To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi All- Just thought i'd share this bit of print with you. It is the blurb for Gary's show from The San Francisco Bay Guardian, May 13th, 1998, "8 Days a Week - Critic's Choices" calendar section: May 17th, Sunday ________________ NU-MUSIC As one incarnation of punk rock suffered its death in late '70's United Kingdom, GARY NUMAN came to the fore with synthesizer-driven pop that earned him some hits ("Are Friends Electric", "Down in the Park", "Cars"). Numan paved the way for an avalanche of mid-'80's hit makers like Human League, Thompson Twins, and Flock of Seagulls. Though the aftershock was late in the coming, his "grandchildren" (some obvious, others not so) now occupy a number of slots on the hit parade (e.g., Garbage, Prodigy, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins). Numan is touring in support of his latest Cleopatra CD, EXILE. Come out and see if Numan can still make those keys purr and grind the way he used to. Switchblade Symphony opens. 8pm, Fillmore, 1805 Geary, SF $17.50. (Myint) Yeah! Good Press!, Critic's Choice! I couldn't be happier...well, maybe if i get to meet Gary in person.... This isn't music, this is survival.... ________________________ Lisa obscure@blueneptune.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 May 1998 05:05:10 EDT From: Jamesy999 Subject: Things I've bought at boot fairs........ Having left England on Tuesday the 29th April, we had plenty of time to prepare ourselves for "Gazza's" show on the 2nd May. We spent the spent the week Drinking (very expensive!) Eating (very cheap!) Shopping (Similar to London) Visiting tall buildings & the statue of liberty (Long queues. but worth it). Central Park at night (Very DITP) night life was cool, the most entertaining place being CBGB's a great mix of mixed up people living for the moment, this dive of a building has the most mind blowing "Rest rooms" I've ever seen. Highly recommended. Saturday soon rolls around and it's time to head for the Plaza. Arriving at around 5 P.M. we pick up our tickets and go for a few drinks and grab some tuck from a bar a few blocks away. A couple of hours latter we head back to the venue and have a few beers in the bar next door. 8.30 P.M. we enter the venue. There was a good friendly crowd inside. Mainly US Goth influenced. I got the feeling quite a few of them were there to see the support. At this stage in my "Numan addiction" I've overcome the need to rush to the front of the hall & prefer instead to hang out in the shadows, usually near the bar! Here we find David Brooks & Richard chilling out and having a few beers so we spend some time chatting to them, they both seemed very impressed with the turnout. The support come & go, they were about on par with Gary's UK support acts i.e.. not very good! It's then time for Gary. I won't go in great detail as it's already been done elsewhere. Gary was given a great reception by the crowd, the biggest cheer coming for DITP. The set list was very Similar to UK & Europe, which is fine as it seem to work very well. We wasn't to keen on the "Jesus Jones" version of "We are so fragile" I my view the "Jones's" suck! But Gary's own taste in music has always been a bit questionable! My personal fave track of the night was "Every day I die" For some strange reason that track means a lot to m.e! also outstanding where "Noise Noise" "Metal" & QOF. I would have liked to have seen "THE ANGEL WARS" done as I felt this was outstanding on the UK Exile tour. Also Replicas was missed, but I understand this was included in some latter shows. The sound system was very good, better in fact then most of the recent UK show PA systems. Gary's vocals on stage have had that laid back approach for a few years now, I guess that's just the way he's wants it. I paid $20 for the T-shirt which to be honest was no better then bootleg quality being a sicky orange colour & mispelt! After the show we headed for the much publicised "After show party" when we got there, it was a bit of a non starter, no real sign of any numan involvement at all. We didn't stay to long as the bar was crap! I think the club owners where just on the make! When we left we happened upon Jim "The Machman" Napier (Polar Bear) Well done Jim for spotting us!! (You must have some kind of Bear sense!) Jim & friends were heading for the club we've just left. We then headed for "Switchblades" after show party which turned out to be a much better affair. A very enjoyable night was had by all. Just going to America was a dream come true & seeing Gary in NYC was fantastic. When (if) Gary tours the US again we'll defiantly be there! ***************** ***************** Talking of vocals the live version of "Dominion Day" That appears on Disk 2 seems in my opinion to have had the vocals redone, either this or Tim Summerhayes can perform miracles! I was there that night and believe me his voice was very laid back almost drowned out at times, yet on the CD there almost studio quality!..just a thought. Bought "the Mix" while in the US. On the whole it's not very good. A couple of tracks that stand out from the rest are "We are so fragile" Death ride 69 mix. & "Emotion" Which I reckon is better then Gary's original (not hard to do!)... just an opinion. To: "Digest Numan" Friends, Romans, Digesters, I have a serious question for you all, something that's been worrying me for a while now, and so to ease my troubled mind, I would like some intelligent, compassionate and semi-professional Numanoid responses please. Okay, here goes. One of the hazards of my work is that I am forced to endure a fair amount of time on Russian aircraft. As is my habit, I am usually plugged into my Walkman during these flights into the unknown, and on several occasions I have been lost in the energy of the Living Ornaments recordings. But ironically, during take-offs and landings, "The Aircrash Bureau" track has been playing by sheer co-incidence. Needless to say, as I contemplate the lyrics, I grip the armrests with white knuckles and try to control my panic attacks, especially when we bounce into a rough landings during snowstorms in Siberia ... Considering the meaning of the song, is this a potentially dangerous situation? Am I tempting fate, considering the less than perfect safety record of Aeroflot? Or am I just being paranoid?
