Looks like the accents in my last e-mail didn't come out too well... sorry about that! Well, I got my concert pictures back today... they came out GREAT! Look out for them to appear on the web the first few days of June. They will be on my Geocities site (http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Arena/1918/tour.html) and on the WWWebb. Oh, and I'm mystified by one thing... who some of the people in these pictures are! If you ate at Mifune with us before the S.F. show, please e-mail me and identify yourselves! I also have a group photo with one guy I don't recognize at the back... it's of Gary, me (long black coat, only female in the picture!), Joey (who *tucked in* his tour shirt...), John Carramao (boiler suit), Mark (soul patch and glasses), Derek (beard and glasses), Ian Golder (tall), and Mystery Man. If you remember posing in that photo... well, you know what to do. Descriptions included since you probably don't know who we are either. :P I really want to be able to identify everybody in these photos. Thanks! I've rambled on again... This is what I came up with. -------- Dear Gary, Gemma, Ade, David, Steve, Richard, Big G, Andy, the support crew, Tony, Beryl and everyone else who helped bring Gary Numan to North American audiences, We just wanted to say a big "THANK YOU" for touring on this side of the pond. With it being 16 years since your last live appearances in North America, you have fulfilled the dreams of so many fans who never thought they would ever get to see you perform. Some weren't even born before 1982, while some have waited patiently since then for your return. No one has been disappointed. In fact, everyone says they have been completely blown away by the whole experience. From the power of the performances to your taking time to talk with anyone who waited after the shows to meet you. We cannot fully express our gratitude but we wanted to tell you how thankful we are to everyone who made the tour possible. If you come again, we'll be there. Derek Langsford, San Diego, CA (San Fran and LA) John Marques Carramao, Walnut Creek, CA (Seattle, Portland, San Fran and LA) your name, hometown, state/Province (shows you attended) here --------- I'd like to add as many Digest subscribers' names as possible to the list. Please email me with your name, hometown, state and what shows you attended and I'll add them for eventual emailing to Gary. Put "Thanks" in the subject line to help me collate them all. Here is my story and a little bit of a review: The concert was scheduled to be at the Firestone but for several unknown reasons that I heard of it was moved to the Sapphire Supper Club. The venue was very small, VERY hot, and very crowded. Switchblade Symphony was O.K. and a lot of goths showed up to see them. Gary finally took the stage around 10:00 and the crowd went nuts. Gary walked right past me and as soon as he did I abandoned my wife and friends and rushed to get as close as I could, which was an arm's length away. The first song was "Friends" which was cut very short because of sound problems. Gary was a true professional and resumed the song right from the top. I never saw Gary live and like a lot of Numanoids I also waited to see him for almost a decade. He never stopped thrashing and moving about as the intense heat would of knocked me out right from the start. The band was also very energenic and put on one hell of a show. The reaction from the crowd was intense and Gary smiled from ear to ear, and he did it often throughout the show. I was freaking out, here I am watching Gary Numan live and so close I could actually touch him. My wife said that she met Gemma and told her that I'm a huge fan and that we may be able to meet him after the show. By now my mind was spinning. Anyway, Gary and the band sounded awesome and the old songs like Metal and A.F.E. had a new heavier edge to them. I enjoyed every song but my faves were Dominion Day, An Alien Cure, Voix, Down in the Park, and A.F.E. When Gary sang Absolution I could see him looking and smiling right at Gemma. She smiled right back and sang every song right along with him. As the show came to the end Gary came back on to do an encore which was "Replicas". Well by now the show was over, or so I thought. Me, my wife, and friends took Gemma's advice and headed towards the tour bus. As we waited the bus door opened and my heart stopped. One by one the band members came out and we got their autographs. They were all so cool, especially Ade Orange. After an hour Gary finally stepped out and I tried to remain cool. I walked up to Gemma and thanked her very much and I turned to Gary and said "Thanks, I waited 17 years to see you, you're the best". I also asked if he would come back in the future and he said "yes, real soon". He signed my cd's but the best part was yet to come. I asked if I could take my picture with him and Gemma and they agreed. WOW!!! My dream of a lifetime came true. The following day I rushed to the one-hour photo and stared at the pictures of the concert and of Gary and Gemma with me and my wife. It was all over. 17 years of waiting paid off in a unbelievable way! I just want to say that Gary and Gemma are the nicest and most down to Earth people you could ever meet, and a big thanks to Gemma for being so sweet. Most of all, thanks to Gary for all the years of great music and memories. I couldn't of asked for a better time. Have fun everyone! -Lance and Janice Waligroski ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 23:59:00 -0800 From: Pythoness Subject: Jealous Brits & Tour Thoughts To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) > >I dont know wether its just me who feels like this but it seems that = >gary is taken much more seriously over there in the states than he is = >here. Actually, I'm pretty sure this is the case. He was never as visible here as he was there, and he was never made an especial whipping-boy in the American music press. It's gotta be hard to get over some of the old media venom, and I'm sure there are plenty of non-Numanoid people in the UK who remember his media image as a wanker more than anything (here they just vaguely remember that he was the guy who did that "Cars" song, if they remember anything). I remember a British friend sneering at my liking "someone as one-dimensional as Gary Numan" when *his* great idol was Bowie. In view of this, and of the fact that he's seeing elated audiences who have been starving for him for at least sixteen years instead of people who catch him every tour or two, has anyone asked him what he thinks of his US audiences? (If he's capable of thinking much of anything at this point; he and the entourage must be unbelievably exhausted by now.) I told Steve Harris after the Portland show that I didn't think I had ever seen such a hungry and grateful audience, and he said earnestly that it was "humbling" to see so many radiant faces and that they had been as eagerly awaiting this tour as we had. He was charming, by the way. Last note: Gary was "knackered" (to quote Big G) and didn't put in an appearance afterward that night (though he signed a few things inside the bus), and they had the 12-hour drive to SF coming up; I was very disappointed but also very sympathetic. He had put out a lot more energy than he was obliged to for 350 people nowhere-in-particular and it was obvious (at least at close range) through the show that he was weary, though he didn't stint on that account at all. Men half his age would be proud to have gotten through the aerobics he did, without half the panache, grace, and enormous stage presence, which overwhelmed me. The whole show felt fresh and vibrant, as if they hadn't already done it a dozen times in the two weeks preceeding, as if all the songs were brand new. Gary was totally present and responsive; he beamed when we sang the traditional response to "You know I hate to ask--" as if he hadn't heard audiences do that a hundred times. I appreciated that more than I can say; I really felt as if he gave us something special by working so hard when he really could have just gone through the motions. I'm not going to forget that. I actually owe him a great deal--he and his work have been major presences in my life for 19 years-- and now I owe him even more. I hope I can thank him in person one day. zg Ziggy Blum zigi@teleport.com ___________________________ I could be dreaming But then maybe that's fatal There's nowhere to hide in your dreams --G. Brian Hammond, Laura Hamilton (the Denver Dudes, Riana) and myself came early to get parking, found ample, and managed to be in the vicinity when Gary and Gemma arrived in a black Nissan Pathfinder. We waved, and Gemma waved back as they went into the side entrance. We went off to see a bit of the now rather seedy Hollywood Boulevard and "nip" (it's really only one more block, Brian, I think) into Aaron's Records which had Numan/Dawn prominently displayed. They had a good selection of Numan albums but nothing unusual or rare. While being one of the better import stores in Southern California they make you pay a lot for their selection. Time was tight in order to rendez-vous with Rod Reynolds at the Palace. Rod's friend Hal arrived and we made contact realizing we were all waiting for Rod, who eventuially arrived. Our hopes of getting into the soundcheck faded as time went by and it seemed like everyone was already in the building. We heard the soundcheck start, saw Marilyn Manson exit (we heard him practice DiTP twice), and slowly more and more people started showing up and a line started to form. The excitement was building. Kathryn Silures and her friend Larry arrived (two great peope who did the incredible feat of starting in Philly and hitting every show but Vancouver), as did John Carramao, Riana and her mom. John Carramao and Alec Way also made it down from SF after things were in doubt the previous show. We all chatted while seeing if any of the Numan clan made an appearance. By the time it got to past 7 it was clear that no one would show and we headed off to the New York Pizza place, where we apparently missed the preshow gathering, such as it was (I think it occurred waiting outside the Palace), but Kathryn and Larry were there as well as another Numan fan who had the reissue of the Bombers/That's too Bad 7" double pack from 1979 with him for Gary to sign. We went back to the Palace and the line was long. Fortunately we were on the guest list for LA (perhaps the only perk I have ever received as a result of my producing this Digest). We almost nearly didn't get in as our names were not actually on the lists held at the box office. Fortunately, I had a copy of the email Gary sent me saying he'd put us on, and despite that being an easily forged document, it made the grade and allowed us in. Phew! We could have been scrambling for tickets at that point. The Palace is a real concert venue, not a club or restuarant. Looks like an old movie theatre (in Hollywood duh!). There was a balcony but we decided we'd be on the main floor, only at the back to avoid the pushing (we observed the Numanazis arrive while waiting outside) and to hear the concert, having learned from the SF experience that front and central is not the best place to be, sonically. A DJ played a mixture of familiar 80s stuff (including the vicinity appropriate Sex Dwarf by Soft Cell) and some other stuff which didn't blend well together with the more familiar tracks IMO. Switchblade Symphony came on and the hall began to fill up a lot more. Again there were a lot of goths there but not as many as SF. The crowd was again diverse with ranges from teens to 40s and even 50s. We saw the Numanazis head towards the front and 'Big Pink' and 'Little Lavendar' as theyare apparently known (thanks Bill) - two parties from the SF show we'd rather not have seen again, but at least we didn't have to deal with them at the back. We had a good view because of the sloping floor - one advantage of old movie theatres. SS played their set, and it was better being able to hear them play a little more clearly. While nothing to rave about, I did kinda enjoyed their performance this time. Richard Blades of KROQ and famous for a series of 80s music compliation CDs known as "Richard Bladews Flashback Favorites" introduced Gary. He said he was not surprised that Gary would sell out (ca 1200) at the Palace after a 15 year absence. Then the hall darkened, the band came on, and the show started. It was good to hear the full sound this time although *again* there were problems with Gary's vocals on the first few songs (what *is* the problem - this has occurred so often on this tour). The Palace house lights were used to great effect - synchronised and cued to the songs which added a new dimension compared to most other venues. In fact, this must have felt more like the old heydays for Gary than many of the venues he has played on this tour. Gary played the regular set and only "An Alien Cure" didn't seem to work. Before DiTP, Gary said "many people have covered my songs lately, but one of the best has been by Marilyn Manson, and he's come along to sing it with us tonight". On came MM, sans most of his make-up, and he and Gary swapped verses for the song. MM shook Gary's hand at the end and acknowledged Gary as he left the stage. A very nice gesture. Did this make Gary more credible to the young goths? Then for Deadheaven, Wayne Hussey of The Mission came on to play guitar. It was great having musicians with more credibitily these days come on and play with Gary - is the UK press taking notice? One thing I noticed was on Noise Noise the synth break just filled the hall and Brian and I turned to each other in mutual appreciation of the incredible wall of synth - ecstacy. Made me pine for the old days in some ways. But this was 1998 and Gary has moved on. We were treated to all the encore songs Replicas, Me,I Disconnect from You!, We Are So Fragile and finishing off with We Are Glass. A splendid finale to another incredible night. I even had room to bop and play air guitar at the back. We left the main hall and headed for the merchandise stand where I again met Robb Horan who is the guy behind Sirius Entertainment and the Numan/Dawn project. Picked up the signed poster of the Exile Tour and headed out to talk with fellow fans. Those for whom this was their first Numan concert were in awe, those who had been to previous shows on the tour were still excited about the whole thing. It was simply a delight to be surrounded by people who understood why someone can love an artist's music so much and go through hell because of it (like many of us have) to reach this point. I spoke with Miss Marlene who was rapidly losing circlation in the "cold". Eventually, the band trickled out. Kathryn was freezing in the 58 degree weather in her Dawn outfit (sorry for the misforecast :-). I got Steve Harris' autograph to complete my band line-up in my Exile CD booklet, and waited for Gary to finish with the 40 or so fans ahead of me. When I got to Gary I had him sign a few more things, and we talked about the tour and the fan reponse. I didn't really have anything profound to say. I then talked with Gemma and Brian and Laura. We asked Gemma about the new album, he pronunciation of "Voix" and how the death of Princess Diana, 3 days after Gemma and Gary were married, affected their wedding celebrations (not to much thankfully although they did cancel a party). Before long Gary and Gemma went to the bus we said goodbye and that was it. We headed back into the San Fernando Valley for the 4 or so hours of sleep we would get before having to ge to the airport later that morning. It has taken me more than a week for my excitement to calm. I can't thank Gary, the band, the crew and Cleopatra enough for making the tour happen. The fans over here have been more than receptive to this tour and word is it might happen again soon, though more likely early next year than later this year, according to Gemma. Meeting a lot of the west coast Digest subscribers adnm website authors was a lot of fun too. So many names to which I can now put faces. Many thanks for saying hi to me and for making the trip all that more worthwhile. In many cases it was like meeting old friends, albeit really for the first time. In fact, he's had no press at all. Many of us US fans have had to 'wonder' for long periods of time "what Gary was doing". I, myself, went from 1989 (Outland) to 1995 without hearing ANYTHING at all about Gary. I had only 5 albums to listen to, as the NUMA albums just weren't available, except rarely by an import company. Even then, if you weren't quick, you missed it. If Gary continues in this force, he will be back in the charts here for sure, as his popularity is creating quite a buzz. Old friends of mine are talking about him, whether it be from the 'Dark City' soundtrack, or whatever..they are recognising Gary's name (because I annoyed them with Gary's music as a teen)...but it did create an impression that they remembered. I hope Gary can keep up with this, as it's the best thing that's happened to him in years. :-) "Email...a small slice of 'the best stuff on Earth'" ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
