To: "Gary Numan" All I can say is that waiting 20 years to get to see Gary in concert has definitely been worth it. Gary put on one hell of a show, and left 'em yelling for more. It is funny with what little advertising that went on in Atlanta, the show was pretty packed. I got within 6' of Gary and the crowd loved it. It was pretty amazing the number of people in the audience who had not been alive when Gary first came out. I had two kids next to me ask why they played Prince between bands, and I mentioned that Gary has done a Prince re-make and the kid just gave me a blank stare. Anyway, I would like to thank Gary for coming to Atlanta, and all the fans who came to the show. Michael Rowe ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jun 1998 10:17:17 CST From: "Jeffrey J. To: I've always been rather inept at introductions, so here's what will have to do.... (And I promise all of my other emails will be significantly shorter than this....) During my first, second and third Gary Numan concerts (Orlando, West Palm Beach, and Jacksonville), I had something of a revelation. The first concert was because of Switchblade Symphony (hadn't quite broken the Gothic Cat habit, as of then). The next two were because of Gary Numan. I still haven't figured out why, precisely, that Gary Numan has surpassed even the "great" Sisters of Mercy in my temple of love. I suppose, er, know that needs some explaining. I have much maligned religion recently, and I (sometimes) feel sorry for doing that (generally not). I have just realized, thanks to Gary Numan, that my religion is music and writing, complete with rituals and rules all my own. And there is a new priest in the temple, Gary Numan. Damned if I know exactly why. I mean, I felt years of horrible relationships (understatement), stupid facades, and a couple of moronic pre-conceptions about "goth" and "music" fade into the nothing that they are...or were. I felt like I was cleansed, turned into a new person (or New-Man...). The old husk of a pupae is now something of the past as I spread my wings and fly into the beautifully dark sky. (Almost a cliche' and overly dramatic, but who cares.... It works for me.) I also understand his dislike of religion. Try calling your self a "writer" or a "musican" or make a refence to "the Muse" when someone asks about your religion, and find out exactly how "nice" "religious people" can be. Anyway, enough of religion (probably too much). Personal crap: I feel either a lot younger or a lot older than I am (29) most of the time. Usually feel older during the week ("assistant to the teacher" in a physically impaired classroom in Orlando, Florida) and much younger when listening to music and writing (B.A. from University of Central Florida and M.A. from Stetson University). Tried the "classical piano" approach for a couple of years. Did a couple of concerts (some even out of the country), and I crashed and I burned, emotionally. I always knew there was more to life than practicing, and writing. Did the band thing for awhile. Mostly, I just met clueless boneheads who wouldn't know a chord progression or a melody if it.... You get the idea. Still searching. Probably as a drummer. (No $ for a keyboard and the drum is a remnant of the Billy Squier days....) I used to be able to manage YYZ. Haven't played in a couple of months. (The job....) Avidly purchasing anything Gary Numan I can get my hands on. Haven't read the Dawn (Linsner) comic, yet. So far, I have Tubeway Army Premier Hits, The Mix, Magic, Dawn, Outland, and the Dawn/ Exile tour jersey, none of which will ever be for sale.... :) If I could manage to get a few (read as "any") posters, I would actually un-do the Sisters of Mercy wall in my room. (And once you get to know me, assuming you do, you will know how big a deal that is for me....) Would have bought some on the tour, but gas ate up most of the money and the plastic is almost maxed out. At the Jacksonville show, I was the one in the back who glowed white in the black lighting (forgot about how faded black glows white). I think there's a metaphor I'll use, somewhere in here.... It is nice to know I'm not the only New-Man created from Newman out here.... (Numanoid works as a title, too....) One last thing (promise). Anyone know where I can get the lyrics for "Magic" ? I think I know most of them (from the concerts and the CD playing almost constantly since last week) but I'm not sure. (e.g. Is it "I'll keep you warmer" or "warm" or "woman" -- any would fit and make sense.... I'm not second-guessing Gary Numan. He writes lyrics a hell of lot better than I.) (Sorry about the tyops, but I didn't feel like proofing this) Anyway, I've babbled enough. Yes, I've got Gary in my blood like a virulent disease. I was recently reintroduced to his music when the movie 'Dark City' was released. I enjoyed it so much that I rushed out to buy the soundtrack. I had already listened to the soundtrack a dozen times over before I paid any attention to who the artists were. Lo and behold, my favorite song, 'Dark' was performed by one Gary Numan! Interesting, I thought. I had been familiar with 'Cars', (who in the States hasn't?), but found myself entranced by the strength and direction that his music had taken. So I bought 'Exile', and listened to it nonstop. And then, GASP!!, he came to Seattle on tour!! I was so blown away by his physical presence, that I ran out to the music stores, and now I own four CD's. (All this in the past three weeks, mind you.) I'm now on a search for 'Sacrifice', I don't know what I'll do without another fix! I've got the shakes just thinking about it! I don't play any instruments, although I did sing in high school. Also while I was in high school, I discovered a talent for writing. So, that is what I do, although I don't make money at it. It's a catharsis of sorts. If I didn't get things out of my head and onto paper, I'd probably be stark raving mad in a manner of moments. Umm, I'm nearly 23 years old, and I work full time at Costco Wholesale, based here in Issaquah, Washington. I'm not sure how much of an intro you need, so if you have any questions that I could perhaps answer, gimme a buzz! I have a question, perhaps you can answer, perhaps not. Have you (I mean the collective 'you' as in the website, the fan club, whatever), have you given any thought to putting together a list of fans interested in corresponding with other fans? Kinda like penpals, either through e-mail, or by more archaic means? Let me know if you can, and if not, well, that's cool too. With many tears, the only thing I could blurt out was that "I am your biggest black fan". He replied with, "Oh, really" and continued to write on my Down In The Park/Do You Need The Service 12" saying thank you and so on... I cried all the way home! I did not know how much he had affected my life all these years until that moment. Just thought I'd share this with everyone as I am sure that some of you can understand. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello fellow Garyheads! What a time it was, eh? Many of us saw Our Friend Electric for the first time last month. I don't remember taking so many pictures. You can check out about 30 of those pictures on the NAGNFC Website at: http://members.aol.com/PolareBear/Machman.html Once you're in, click on the IMAGES page for pure Numanary goodness. The last show in Charlotte on Sunday was most incredible. Numanoids were lined up at the door 2 hours before the show. I thought I would be fashionably early, but a multitude of folks were already lined up. In fact, all the US Crazies were in line, Bob "Bobcat" Garr and his wife Darlene, Rick "I Touched Gary!" Stott from Washington, DC, the quintessential Numanboy hailing from Dallas, Mark "Shoney's Sucks, But the Puzzles Are Cool" Darmofal of Scranton, PA, and Ariel Rangel from Los Angeles and his wife. Others were in line as well. Dare I forget Don "Machman Of The South" Swanner? His license plates were "1NUMAN1". Too cool! Tickets were given out to those in line early for a raffle which was to take place rampant with Numan treats like autographed posters and the like. Sorta like the pre-show party in Philly at Starbucks way back when. Before long, we saw Tony, Webb, then Gary and his entourage walking to the Wendy's across the street, after which Numanboy ran to take photos like mad! Keep an eye on his website for those! Soon, Ade walked the length of the group filming each of us as he encouraged us to whoop it up! The club and its locale was a chapter out of a Hee Haw episode. But the pre-show DJ knew how to work the crowd as X-rated Japanese animation filled a screen to the side of us. Yours truly was up front leading the crowd to sing along to the DJ's anthems of Smiths and Flock Of Seagulls, etc. I must have high-fived the entire front row that night. Switchblade seemed less tense onstage and really rocked. The goths ate it up as seemed to be the custom at the other 9 shows I saw. The guitarist wore a big dog head for a song. Nice touch. When Gary came on, the crowd went nuts. The girl ahead of me fron the UK was screaming her lungs out. Gary didn't seem tired at all, and actually embellished and emphasized certain words he hadn't before. He looked really into the proceedings. During DITP on the line "Oh look there's a rape machine" a bare chested guy with a short green plastic skirt took the stage and danced with Gary for the remainder of the song. On his chest read "We'll miss you Gary" with a big red heart. Gary smiled quite a bit during that episode, while trying to maintain the seriousness of the song, not an easy task it appeared! He was even smiling bigger than the time that evening he looked to his far right to see a girl dancing in a cage to all the songs. I told her she did a great job afterwards whilst she smoked her butt. Afterwards, the US Crazies took a group shot with Gary, and the clan of us, which had been to several shows together, hugged and took photos of each other, for we knew this was the end of the saga. "See you on the fall tour" we all said to one another. E-mail addresses were exchanged and new friends were made. Kathryn "I Need A Woman!" Silures, who made the 44 hour trip one-way by bus, and was self-described as drunk during the show, said the previous week she was seriously considering coming back to Ithaca with me for a few days, but a stranger asked her to stay at his place, which she readily accepted ("Please don't talk to strangers, can't you see they're not like us?"). And thus ends the riveting saga. I can hardly believe the number of new friends I made on this tour, as well as the massive number of NAGNFC Fan Club members I hadn't spoken with for 3 years. It was a reunion, it was a new and life-altering experience, it was GARY NUMAN! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 11:24:02 EDT From: RICKPICK1@aol.com Subject: North American Tour To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Had the priveledge to see the show on MAY 27 in W.P.B. After all it isn't everyday one has a dream come true. I was afraid that my thoughts might be way too long for this forum; but I've enjoyed so many others' stories from the tour I figured one more couldn't hurt. (You have been warned...) "And this is my story." I arrived at the front door to the Fillmore at around 2:30 pm. The tour bus was already parked in front of the venue. I met up with the first people in line - Bill and Annette (hi!). Like me, Bill had seen Gary at the Kabuki Theatre in 1982. As the only people in line for quite a while, we stood there trading stories and getting to know one another for quite awhile. Then, I noticed someone coming down the sidewalk towards us...it was Gary! (Who, by the way, looked smashing his black jeans and t-shirt) I was so surprised and amazed that here was my favorite musician walking down the street towards me, that i was speechless. So as he passed by, I could only manage to say, "Gary, welcome back". He replied with a smile and "thank you". My brain was so stunned that I didn't even think to ask him for an autograph... Soon, more folks started showing up, the line grew, and we were joined by the fabulous Riana Pfefferkorn and her entourage! Sometime later, I saw one of the digesters, NuRuss, talking with Beryl as she appeared in the doorway of the tourbus. I thought "well, here's your chance to ask about photographing the show". The Fillmore is notorious for its no cameras policy. I cautiously walked over and waited for Russ to finish with Beryl and then introduced myself. I thanked her for all the hard work she had put in over the years with the Fan Club, and supporting Gary. I told her how wonderful I thought it was that Gary's music career was a family enterprise. Then I asked about photographing the concert and "does Gary really come out to sign autographs after the show?" She assured me that yes he does, and didn't think that I would have any problems with my camera as Gary does not mind fans taking pictures. This made me very happy. (as if i wasn't in heaven already...) I think I spent about ten minutes or so talking with Beryl, to whom I am very grateful for taking the time to chat with a fan. Just before 5pm,it was time to go and meet all of the Digesters who were to meet for dinner before the show. Riana and I were co-hosting the schmooze. [See her pix at http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Arena/1918/tour.html] We had a great time talking and eating, and I was excited to meet so many Numanoids! I would like to thank everyone who came - Riana and her way cool mom Jan Pfefferkorn, Derek Langsford, Joey Lindstom, George Ellis, Ian Golder, NuRuss, Mark Reinertson, and everyone who's name I have forgotten....it was a truly special experience to be with so many Numan fans. After filling up on noodles; we headed back to the Fillmore. The doors opened at precisely 7pm! I will refrain from making comment on the opening act. I saw many in the audience who clearly enjoyed them, and that should speak for itself. I will say that watching a skin-tight latex clad girl try to stay in her dress was very entertaining! A mere 30 minutes after the opening act; Gary and band finally took the stage. The moment I had waited 16 years for was finally here. I was completely blown away... It was absolutely brilliant being front and center stage, surrounded by a whole group of Numan fans! I must admit that I briefly harbored thoughts that I might be in danger of coming away disillusioned; that my image of Gary and his music had somehow become completely irrational and unrealistic during his 16 year absence from the US. But, once I had the tickets in my hand, I vowed to put aside all doubts and let myself be amazed. Was I ever! I can honestly say that he surpassed all expectations and put on one of the best shows I have ever seen. The show was pure magic. I felt 16 again - smashed against the stage, staring up at those lovely blue eyes, weak in the knees, heart racing, grinning ear-to-ear. The mix of new and old songs was incredible, and brought back a swirl of memories. His energy was so infectious it helped me fend off the NumaNazis, as well as Big Pink and her buddy. I wasn't about to let a few stupid people ruin a perfect evening. Gary seemed to be enjoying every minute of each song. He has really become an exciting performer to see live. I couldn't have wished for a finer set of musicians to back him up, and the set list was awesome (Noise,Noise?!). For 90 minutes, he had the audience, and me, in the palm of his hand, and we were swathed in magic and light and sound. I hope he comes back soon - 16 years was way too long! After the show, I walked out barely touching the ground. Outside in front of the venue, I caught up with all the other Numanoids, as we anxiously waited for Gary to come out. The first person I got to chat with was Big G, I thanked him for his vigilance in dealing with the stage-divers and rowdies. Next I spent some time talking with Gemma. What a lady...Gary is a lucky man! She is so very classy, generous, and kind. I really enjoyed chatting with her, my heart nearly melted when she told me what was inscribed on her wedding ring! I told her that hoped that I could be as lucky as to have someone write a song like Absolution for me. I waited until the crowd surrounding Gary was thin enough for me to actually see him through the throng of fans. Then I went over and waited as he spent time with each and every fan. I was utterly taken with his warmth and sincerity. When it was finally my turn; I'm afraid I was rather tongue tied. I introduced myself as the person who had done an interview with him after Outland had been released by IRS in 1991. I was shocked and flattered that he remembered. I think I mumbled something about how wonderful it was to finally meet him. I gave him a hug, and then asked if he would sign my interview and copy of PTTA. I told him the show was awesome and well worth the wait. And that I hoped he came back sooner. Riana took a picture of me with Gary - evidence that I wasn't dreaming! The impression I am left with is of someone who really enjoys what he does; and that his fans are important to him. Such a rare trait these days. My love and respect for Gary Numan, whose music has been an important part of my life for 18 years now, is stronger than ever. I am so happy to see that he has picked up a whole new group of fans; all the more reason for him to continue to record and tour! I hope I haven't bored you all to death...thanks again to all the Numanoids who shared the experience with me...let's do it again soon. and I believe in faith and magic and I believe in love and wonder, Lisa Yimm obscure@blueneptune.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jun 1998 13:20:35 -0500 From: abellj@notes.chi.ddbn.com Subject: Time of our 9 Lives! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Deana (Rattles) and I had the time of our lives doing "9" SbS/Numan shows. (First four with the machman, Jeff Tolva), Now we are compiling our stories (in our heads)... pictures... trinkets and the whole experience to paper and will post our details of the fun we had. I wish to say HELLO to all the numaniods we met... and did not meet. I have little bits of papers, business cards, etc with all your email addresses on them and will get to them soon. In all of our shows: Toronto, Cleveland, Pontiac, Chicago, Orlando, W.PalmBch, St. Pete, Jacksonville, Atlanta... Atlanta won hands down as the best show we saw and experienced... tho we were a bit down on the Atlanta club for their policy on NO CAMERAS... I did manage to get off a shot of the opening band, The Changelings... and get away with it! :) more detailed post from the both of us later. and Thanks Joey Lindstrom for getting our name and my pic on your Tour page.... Actually had a few people come up to me saying they (actually!) reconized me from the photo!!! and ... Jeff Tolva... we will be in touch. You won't believe the new stories.! -Joe Abell (Chicago) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Jun 1998 22:07:09 -0700 From: Mike Mckay-Pfeiffer Subject: transcript of cyber chat To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Can anybody PLEASE help me? I missed the Gary Numan cyberchat on May 27 on Yahoo - and I can't find a transcript of it anywhere. If you know where a copy of it is on the net, or you have a copy you could email me I would love it!! I'd also like to thank all of you that have been posting pics from the shows -- it's great to keep seeing the experience again! I must have spent nearly a half an hour trying to get logged on, but >never could. Did the Chat take place? Yes I think most people had a hard time getting into the chat , for a start you needed to have shockwave installed on your machine which it never told you anywhere. Secondly once you actually mananged to access the chat rooms it was not at all clear as to the location of the "event" I stumbled upon it quite by mistake and ended up guiding a couple of other Numan fans into the room thanx to the wonders of icq. I think the difficulties involved meant that there were only a handful of true numanoids around to ask any reasonable questions , there were some really daft questions put to Gary like "What do you think of Shirley Temple films" ....... I mean !! I got 3 of my questions asked which was great. The chat room itself seemed to be having a problem with scrolling so at times I found it difficult to keep up , I know others were having the same trouble. So all in all this was not as succesful an event as the last internet chat that Gary did which is a shame really , but I guess it was worth a 1am night anyway.
