Howard" Subject: Atlanta/Oh Yeah!!!/Jerry V's take To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello all- I'm still grinning big...I FINALLY SAW GARY!!!! I've been enjoying the accounts from others about the whole experience. I hope to update my site soon, but I'm having trouble accessing my account right now. I'm thinking of moving to another server. Atlanta....Well, there have already been some accounts posted. Here's my take... After the frustration of getting lost in Atlanta in a bad part of town we (Jason and I) finally got to The Vortex in Little Five Points. We went to the bar. I recognized Jon Lester from the pix online, but wasn't sure it was him. Jason pointed out that the guy with him had on a Numan shirt. We joined them. Yes, it WAS Jon, and the guy with the Numan shirt on was Rob of the Are Friends Electric web site all the way from the UK. And so the drinking commenced! :-) I ordered a Rusty Nail and got this monstrous drink that was good for some humor for several minutes. The Vortex claims to have the best burgers in Atlanta. We all got burgers; they WERE DAMN GOOD!!! After just minutes the bar filled with Numan fans. We dominated The Vortex lounge!!! I met Brad Day and his friends from the UK in for the show (3 Brits and counting...). It was very cool to meet these other fans I've communicated with online, and also cool meeting so many other dedicated fans anew. There's such a great since of community among us, don't you think? After The Vortex we went on to The Masquerade for the show. The line was forming, but we were fairly early. When we first got there the couple in line in front of us mentioned a couple of giveaways that they were from Murfreesboro. I talked with them. They were all gothed out. Turns out they live about 2 blocks from me, but they were there for Switchblade Symphony. I hope they stayed on for the REAL DEAL!!! ;-) I've had little to no Numan merchandise for a long time, so my first stop once getting inside was to the merch table. I bought a program and a shirt. I had to wait for the autographed print. There was a sign outside that said cameras were prohibited in The Masquerade, but underneath was written in "Except for the Gary Numan show." I started taking pix, then a big bald guy took my film and exposed it. DAMMIT!!! I only had one roll with me! So Jerry has no pix of that incredible night. DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT!!!!!!! I wanted my hands free so I stuffed the program under my shirt in my shorts. It went through hell... I stood back most of the time. I cried through the first half of the show. I was so happy. :-D I finally decided to get closer. I found some open space over to the side of the stage and made my move. A girl in front of me asked me to buy her a beer. I said no-I didn't know her. She asked if I would save her place while she gets one. I said, "Sure." When she got back I let her in, and another bald guy started pushing me. After he almost knocked me over I pushed him back. Who does security grab? Well, me of course! I explained to the security guy the situation and he let me go. What a dickhead that bald guy was. Hey, if you're reading this, YOU SUCK!!! EXILE is one of my favorite albums. I think Gary is definitely on the right track these days. It was great hearing and seeing the full power of those songs live. The older songs with the new edge were awesome!!! I'm normally not one to go for live albums, but I can't wait for live recordings and videos of this tour!!! After the show Rob, Jason, Jon and I hung out for a chance to meet Gary. We were rewarded. I waited till he was done with most of the fans out there. I was standing right behind him while he signed autographs and posed for pix. Those of you there, I'm probably in your pictures. I would LOVE copies!!! Let me know if there's a guy in a black cap over Gary's shoulder in your pix! Finally my turn came. I was SO nervous! I introduced myself, and mentioned my site. He seemed familiar. He signed my tortured program. I talked with him about doing another tour here this year and the possibility of coming to Tennessee next time. I got into some details I probably shouldn't have. He was gracious. I backed off. I thanked him and went on. It still seems like a dream. Gary, if you happen to be cruising through this, Thank you so much for everything!!! Well, I know I've written a lot. I needed to share. All who made the pre-show at The Vortex, thanks for making it a success! Jason, Rob, Brad, Jon,...I'll be in touch. Yeah!!!! :-D -Jerry V will you visit me please, if i open my door... I've also heard from friends of mine who were there that he did NOT in fact play "Engineers" at all during any of the last 6 shows of the tour! If anyone can confirm Gary playing (or not playing) "Engineers", I would greatly appreciate it. "Engineers" is one of my favs from The Pleasure Principle, but knowing Gary never played it before on any other tour, I have a difficult time believing he played it at one gig during the recent US/Canada tour. Also, if anyone would like to trade bootlegs or other GN music rarities for a "very good" tape copy of the Chicago gig, I would be interested in hearing what you have. The copy of the Chicago gig that I have is a balcony recording straight to mini-disc! It was recorded with two unidirectional microphones, and I dare say it's one of the best bootlegs I own!! It's actually difficult to believe this recording was from the balcony; it sounds as good as some of my mixing desk bootlegs from other past years. I know there's plenty of audio boots out there, but has anyone got a video tape of any of the shows? Please write to me, if you've got one! I'll make it worth your time, as I have many GN audio and video bootlegs to trade. Not a holier-than thou approach, just something I feel fairly-strongly about. I doubt Gary Numan has the $ of Metallica or The Spice Girls.... And if he does, he's earned it.... It wouldn't seem right to buy a bootleg if it is at all possible to get it any other way. Anyone know anywhere in Florida (or the Internet, after I pay the Visa down a little) where I can get legitimate Gary Numan recordings, etc.? Special orders always cost a little more than I can usually afford. I'm not too good at "surfing" into places. Also, I would strongly prefer an Internet page with Secured Access/ Secured Line (I think it's called something like that). It's still nice to know I'm not the only one who gladly refers to themselves as a Numanoid/ New-man-oid.... Private email: dagonet@netwide.net, if you prefer. I'll gladly sort through it and re-send to list, to avoid duplications. (Just call me New-Man-Techno-Geek-In-Training.... :) I might even learn IRC this week....) Thanks to everyone on the list. I'm sat in my armchair pondering the very same question. Here's my 10 point plan for GN's next assault on the UK's record buying public. 1. He needs to get a new single out ASAP. And it needs to chart. It will need to be a brand new track, and released by September at the very latest. September 98 that is. Preferably, the song would be in some sort of "new style". I'm not sure what I mean by this, but something a little less industrial than Sacrifice or Exile. (Although I very much liked the new versions of Metal, Voix etc.) Weren't there reports of GN saying he might well return to a traditional drummer/guitar/bass approach in the studio? I may well regret saying this, but what about something in the production style of the band Garbage, but slightly heavier? (Just for this one single mind). Either that or something more electronic. 2. Eagle should commission a video. It need not be expensive - a band performance video would be effective (in the style akin to the Machine & Soul video). Maybe set in a metal cage in a concrete bunker? Perhaps in black & white. Like Jesus and Mary Chain's recent video. 3. GN should get the song remixed by some "in" remixer. This remixed version could be made available to radio should they wish to use it for daytime air play. 4. If the single gets in the Top 20, Eagle should re-release Exile with the single as a bonus track stuck on the end. I know it may stick out like a sore thumb. But other bands do it. At the moment, GN can't be a 100% purist. 5. Do a small number of concerts - perhaps 2 in London, 1 in Glasgow, and 1 in Manchester. Hype them up to be exclusive. "Often copied - never equaled - Numan is back from his sell out tour of the US and is back in the UK for 4 exclusive dates". Use advertising, flyposters, etc. Make sure the tickets sell out quick. Create a buzz..... If necessary to stimulate the MTV/NME crowd, invite Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins over to guest on a track. 6. Be careful over which invitations to accept regarding who to "guest with" (if any) on the forthcoming summer festival circuit. Do NOT, repeat NOT under any circumstances guest with Republica. 7. Invite Chris Evans and Danny Baker (even though the latter is completely loathsome) for a spin in the Harvard in order to secure the opening slot on a TFI Friday TV show. If required, persuade Gemma to sleep with Evans in return for dedicating a whole show to Gary Numan (as per the Spice Girls show). Setlist: Metal, DITP or Dark, New Single. 8. Before you all start emailing me reciting Absolution lyrics, I'm JOKING. 9. Ummmm. I'm struggling. If Eagle Records or Tony try to convince you that doing a duet with Eagle stablemate Then Jerico is a good idea, tell them to stuff it. Do not be persuaded under any circumstances. 10. Ring Liam Prodigy and tell him to stuff it too. Lying two faced tosser if the recent NME news feature is to be believed. There. Guaranteed for success. Now, whose got GN's private email address? Looking forward to opinions on this.... I have been a fanatical Gary Numan follower for twenty years! And last Sunday May 31 1998 I was able to see him live for the first time as he played a small club called the Baha here in Charlotte NC! He started the set with Domination Day and I was sent into orbit. The only complaint I have is the lateness of the show as I had to work Maundy morning and it was Monday morning before he started! But seriously it was a terrific show and now I can finally add Mr. Numan to the long list of my fave musicians I have been fortunate enuff to see live. DEVO, Oingo Boingo, Talking Heads, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, et al, I have seen them all. I look forward to corresponding with you all and any one who may have been at the Charlotte show. To: "'numan@cs.uwp.edu'" Does anybody know if there is a recording made of a concert at the US-tour? If so, I hope it will be released on CD. Was 'Engineers' performesd at one of the concerts in the US an 'Exiled' version or like the original on the PP. After hearing Dominion Day Live on 'DD2' I've the opinion that the Numanvocals have been redone in the studio and remixed, it's just to clean to be be the original recording. I could be wrong, but after hearing DD on several concerts in Europe and the concert at the internet everybody can hear that Numan doesn't sing that precise.(I love it by the way, no negative critism). At the concerts Numan's music really rocks but the live track of DD doesn't sound like that at all. (should have been remixed with harder guitar, more volume on the 'snare', like on the internet gig). More than welcome, y'all!), that one thing a lot of us have in common is that we're in some way more invested in Gary Numan than most people are in their idols. I know quite a few people who went into the music field thanks to him; for me he's been an ongoing inspiration in a number of art fields I dabble in. Since seeing him live (I still can't quite believe it was *him*--part of me still thinks Gary Numan is an archetypal construct of my psyche rather than a living person!), I've realized that his work is connected to a lot of my life and memories, and that it means more to me than I knew previously; it's become part of me. Somehow he made an impression on some of us that went beyond other impressions. I think part of it, for me, was that he embodied all the alienation I was feeling as a teenager, though that doesn't begin to explain why I've stuck to him through all his changes (and mine) for almost 19 years. I haven't done meditating on it yet. I'd like to write an article--either for publication on the WWW or maybe in a 3-D publication--focussing on Numan's appeal to us, his fan base. I would love to hear from any and all of you. Topics I'd like to cover would include (but not be limited to): *When did you become a fan, and what were your impressions at that time? Who were you, and who are you now? How has your opinion of Gary changed over time (if applicable)? *Has Gary's work influenced your life in any tangible way? *If he does, or did, symbolize anything for you, what was it? *Has it ever been hard for you, or on you, being a Numan fan--discouraging, embarrassing, or frustrating? If so, how did you deal with it, and why/how did you stick with it? *Has Gary's work helped you in any way? *Anything else you'd care to tell me about the topic of your personal interface with Gary Numan and/or his work. If you could let me know whether or not it's OK to quote you or mention your name, I'd appreciate it.
