That would be because it was originally= recorded for the Berserker sessions. Gary mentions it in Fan Club Newsletter No.13: "The new album's coming along well [working title was The Hunter but late= r became Berserker]... Some of the song's so far are called; The Hunter This Is New Love My Dying Machine The God Film A Child With The Ghost This Ship Comes Apart" I'd guess the released version of TSCA was the 1984 recording as accordin= g to the label notes it was only produced by Gary, and not with The Wave Te= am who co-produced most of the 1985 recordings. Kinda on this subject, does anyone know when She Cries was recorded? I kn= ow it was the 12" b-side to My Dying Machine, but I think it was recorded in= 1982. Incidentally, while looking at the old Newsletter, I spotted some interesting comments by Gary in the regular "Gary's Questions" slot (Remember, this was 1984): Q. Will there ever be a box set of (the old) singles? A. Yes Q. Are Dramatis now a permanent backing band for Gary? A. Yes Q. Why was the middle bit of Remind Me To Smile missed out on [the Warriors] Tour? A. I changed it. [Ouch!] Q. Will volume 2 of the song book be published and, if so, when? A. Yes, but no definite date yet. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose. Until someone can find the guy who invented "Voix" on the Roland D50(???)= and ask him how he came up with the title, the song remains "Voicks". Eve= n if he says "Vwa", surely whatever Gary says goes. After all, he wrote the= song. Riana, calling "Trois Gymnopedies" Trois Gymnopedies might be pretentious= but not for the reason you hint at. It was written by a Frenchman so I think we might forgive at least HIS use of French. "Doctor" of Acupuncture! How???????? Like "Doctor" of Placebo Effect? Matthew Roberts ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Jun 1998 20:25:52 -0600 From: "Joey Lindstrom" Subject: Bootlegs To: "dagonet@netwide.net" To: Don McCrum I understand your feelings regarding bootleg Numan recordings and wanting to stay legal where your favourite artist is concerned. However, let me share with you some words of wisdom that Gary himself uttered during an interview about a decade ago. Specifically, he asked what he thought about the then-thriving bootleg scene around his music. His response was along these lines (not an exact quote, this is from memory). He said he's not concerned about bootleg recordings of my material, because the only people buying them are die-hard fans who'll buy everything he puts out as well, so it costs him nothing. More to the point, he went on to explain that a healthy bootleg scene around an artist (as long as it doesn't go to extremes) actually does far more good than harm, as it tends to build interest and excitement. I only have a few bootlegs here myself - mainly because most bootlegs are of poor quality and they don't interest me for that reason - but owning a bootleg of a particular concert recording has never once made me feel like I could then dispense with purchasing a particular live album. :-) Gary seems to have taken a page out of The Grateful Dead's book in this respect, although he doesn't take it quite as far - fans at Grateful Dead concerts were allowed to plug into the mixing board and record their boots that way! Similarly, he specifically tells venue management that cameras are PERMITTED at his shows - this was especially true throughout this most recent North American tour, except in Atlanta where apparently the bouncers can't read their own posters - not surprising, given the average bouncer intelligence level - that ACTUALLY STATED that cameras were allowed. This sort of thing builds excitement about the shows and does nothing to harm legitimate merchandise sales, including live CD's and videos. So feel free to buy and sell your bootlegs, or trade them, or give them away, to your die-hard fans and even to casual friends who you're trying to entice into listening to Numan - hell, it just might win somebody over. More to the point, feel free to do this WITH GARY'S (unofficial, for legal reasons) BLESSING. All he asks (and I can't agree with him more on this point) is that the people involved remember that we're all fans here and the point is to have fun with it, not turn a huge profit. I enjoy listening to other bands eg, AFKAP, Depeche mode, T Rex, Prodigy, but none come close to Numan. I have seen Gary live lots of times since 1983 and look foreword to the tour each year. Anyway Thats it really, Thanks for putting me on the mailing list and I look foreword to hearing from you. Best Wishes from England. Rex. (Okay, so *you* knew, but I didn't.) So that's what made Gary decide to become a pop star, eh? Now I know, when he took the stage with his Les Paul at Irving Plaza, and I immediately turned to my friend and asked "Who does he think he is, Marc Bolan?", the answer was a resounding, "Yes!" -- "I've been frozen for 30 years, OKAY? I've long suspected that the show wasn't recorded either at The Roxy or in 1977 and recently asked a contact in Italy to research this. Here's his answer... A WEEK OF FANZINES AND PAPERS, BUT FINALLY I COME WITH *** THE**** ANSWER. YOU KNOW: I WANTED TO BE ABSOLUTELY SURE BECAUSE THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A SURPRISE (AS I SAID IN MY PREVIOUS E-MAIL), BUT IN FACT THINGS ARE EXACTLY AS WE (ME AND YOU) THOUGHT IT WAS. I EXPLAIN A BIT MY SEARCH: TUBEAWAY ARMY'S FIRST SINGLE WAS RECORDED ON OCTOBER 16th AT CAMBRIDGE SPACEWARD STUDIOS WITH MIKE KEMP (A FAVOURITE STUDIO FOR CHEAP INDIE RECORDS IN THE LATE SEVENTIES). THE RECORD COULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED IN NOVEMBER, BUT GARY AND BB WERE NOT HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS SO THE A-SIDE WAS REMIXED BY MICK GLOSSOP AT MANOR STUDIO ON DECEMBER 23RD. MY DOUBT WAS: IF THE SINGLE HAD BEEN SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER RELEASE GARY COULD MEAN "TWO WEEKS TIME" IN LATE OCTOBER OR BEGINNING OF NOVEMBER. IN FACT, ACCORDING TO A 1978 INTERVIEW GARY STATES THAT THE BAND HAD PLAYED ONLY 8 GIGS IN 1977: 5 AT THE ROXY, ONE AT THE VORTEX, ONE IN GREENFORD AND ANOTHER IN A LONDON YOUTH CLUB. MY ROXY GIGOGRAPHY LISTS ONLY 4 TUBEWAY ARMY GIGS: ON JULY 22nd (SURELY THE FIRST!) SEPTEMBER 10th SEPTEMBER 15th, OCTOBER 1st. IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT THE FIFTH GIG WAS LATER IN OCTOBER REPLACING SOME OTHER BAND AT THE LAST MINUTE, SO IT COULD HAVE BEEN A ROXY RECORDING IF WE ACCEPT THAT GARY THOUGHT ABOUT A NOVEMBER RELEASE, BEFORE DECIDING THE REMIX. HOWEVER, AFTER CHECKING ALL MY ARCHIVES I COME WITH THE RESPONSE THAT THINGS ARE MUCH MORE SIMPLE: IN FACT THE LIVE AT THE ROXY ALBUM IS A LIVE AT THE ROCK GARDEN ALBUM RECORDED ON FEBRUARY 1st (WEDNESDAY) 1978, THAT MEANS A COUPLE OF DAYS LESS THAN TWO WEEKS FROM THE SINGLE RELEASE. NOW I CAN REST QUIETLY, DEAR STEVE, AND CORRECT ALSO MY BOOK. IT HAS BEEN CHALLENGING, LONG SEARCH, BUT I AM VERY HAPPY. WELL... DO I DESERVE A COPY OF THE CD? Jim "The Machman" Napier here. In this exciting episode, we answer the question posed by William Wilson of the Glasgow Crazies. He asks us the identities and monikers of the US Crazies. Now, the US Crazies are those guys and gals you all saw in the front of the line before every show. You may have caught a glimpse of their campsites in front of each venue in valiant attempts at being the first in the door at the shows. I have to say, it's not that easy toasting marshmallows when the campfire is blocking rush hour traffic. In no particular order, here are the US Crazies. Please hold your applause until all the names have been called: Bob "Bobcat" Garr and his lovely wife Darlene - I'm now convinced Bob is Bobcat Goldthwait's long lost brother, only Bob Garr's mirror doesn't crack each morning. Darlene is a converted Numanoid thanks to the tour. Rick "I Touched Gary" Stott - This fun-lovin' dude can't stop smiling when Gary is in the spotlight. The Rickmeister scanned most of the pics for the NAGNFC Website. He is counting the days to the next tour. Mark "Shoney's Sucks But The Puzzles Are Cool" Darmofal - This hip Numanoid is a walking musical encyclopedia. When you spend 28 hours in a car together, and still get along, you know that's one okay dude! Hey Mark, we'll have to get back to Shoney's in Christiansburg, Virginia and sample the excellent potato salad. NOT! :-) SHONEY'S: Come for the waitress, stay for the crayons. Kat "I'm Not A Mormon" Silures - You wanna talk about a sexy and happening Numanoid? Look no further than Kat. Kat came with me for the first 9 shows, then attended 5 more. Speaking from experience, here's someone who can keep you laughing for 3500 miles. She is up there with some of the best co-pilots of the road I've ever had the pleasure to hook up with. She put up with each of my 350 moods then, and more recently in my letters. Can you say Saint Kat? Patron Saint of Numan, hereby on this day June 10th. David "Numanboy" Ellis - This crazy guy! This partying cat! This rocking Numanoid travelled 8000 miles in total, mostly on the road, to see Our Friend Electric. If anyone at the shows remember a peppy and bouncy individual at each show they attended, the chance is good it was the quintessential Numanboy. Dave saw Gary before in England, but his enthusiasm was on par with the rest of us following Gary for the first time. Check out his snazzy page at http://pages.prodigy.net/numanboy/numanboy.htm All Others Who Attended The Shows - How can I forget the other attendees? People flew and drove to many shows from all over the country. They are all honorary US Crazies. For full membership into the Crazyhood, send a SASE and a couple Sub Club stamps to receive full benefits. These benefits include travelling thousands of worthwhile miles for the shows, tenting in front of venues (bring a waterproof tent, those street cleaners really hose down thoroughly, although this eliminates the need for a shower in the morning), and the validity of walking outside your home every day and shouting into the morning sky, "I AM A US CRAZY!". The neighbors won't think you're weird, honest!! I'm sending them a picture that I also hopethey will print. Mike review: Gary Numan, Switchblade Symphony 05/10/98 7th House Gary Numan is undisputedly my favorite artist, so forgive me for taking my critic cap off, because when it comes to Mr. Numan, I’m all fan. And, judging by the sold out crowd at 7th house, I’m not alone. After 14 years without touring the US and his first record available domestically in more than five years, I didn’t know what to expect. Gary’s been working harder than ever to make both this tour and his new record “Exile” a success. This show proves he’s succeeding. Switchblade Symphony opened the show with a better than average set. All their songs are a mid-tempo, updated goth mix. It’s not too gloomy, but there’s a lack of depth to their music. The guitarist had a neat effect by using one of those spinning sucker devices on his guitar for a grinding sound. The audience was appreciative and their singer seemed to be having a good time. But, towards the end of their set, the anticipation for Gary grew, making their set seem to go on for far too long. It didn’t take much time for Gary’s stage to be set up. Unlike his past concerts, there would be no elaborate light show with back up singers -- just Gary and his band. He entered the stage like a boxer coming back from an early retirement. As Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer” played in the background, a chant of “Gary, Gary” could be heard. He started the show with a totally slowed-down and heavy version of his classic “Friends.” Like the boxer, Gary had a ferocious glare of conviction in his eyes. He played the set like he was really in the boxing ring, punching out furious versions of his classic’s like “Cars” and “Everyday I Die” along with his new material, “Dominion Day” and “Dark.” Throughout his set there was a weighty, dense feel to his songs -- he played guitar through half of his set, the drums were accented, and the synths actually took a back seat. Gary wasn’t the cold, calculated robot we remembered him as -- he was animated, dancing around the stage, using hand motions, and even an occasional smile. He played a number of b-sides like “Noise, Noise” and “Voix” that only his real fans could recognize. He ended the show with two encores, going way back in the vaults for “Replicas” and “Me, I Disconnect From You.” While their may be other new wave artists trying to be heard again, Gary Numan let be known, this isn’t a comeback -- it’s a revival. --Mike Pfeiffer. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 17:55:38 +0100 From: Damian6 Subject: OFF TOPIC: VIRUS WARNING To: Gary Numan Mailing List , At work today I got wind of a virus doing the rounds in the form of spam entitled "WIN A HOLIDAY". Opening an email, downloading the attachment, and executing it could do that. But at that point, you're on your own. Merely opening an email will not wipe your email. This is a fact of life. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello all, I just read that last digest, and there were a few things that caught my attention. 1) comments on bootlegs. OK, I can fully understand the thinking behind this, but let me point out a misconception about them. Person A trading live tapes with person B will NEVER hurt the finances of the artist involved! WHY? well, most anyone who listens to bootlegs of an artist, is a true fan, as they are the only ones than can stand them, as most are of such poor quality. With this in mind, it is also reasonable to believe that such true fans are already BUYING everything the by said artists. The bootlegs that DO hurt, are those that are made by bigger companies, that actaully LOOK like the mainstream re-leases. These are made to be sold as mainstream releases, and they do hurt an artist. Basically, why would anyone buy bootlegs, without already buying every other studio piece at a much higher quality? 2) How Numan should succeed. There have been many ideas on Numan should succeed, and nearly everyone given, involves the coat-tailling of other artists, or remixes of some kind. He is a great artist, and may never be fully understood, most great artists are not. Making a sellout song, just is not the answer. Yes, I caught a buzz from a single solitary Long Island Tea. It didn't last long. So I was "drunk" for perhaps an hour during Switchblade Symphony. And yes, a stranger asked me to stay at his place. I did not do so. I spent that night in a hotel room with two people who are familar to Jim and I both after "The Machman" 'whirred away into the night' without giving me a straight consistent answer on whether or not I was welcome to stay with him and his friends at another hotel. And yes, I did desire the company of a female that night. One does not need to be dressed as a "Dawn" during a 44 hour bus-trip to recieve dozens of passes and lewd come-ons from the freaks that ride Greyhound. In fact I was looking and feeling rather shabby during that trip. And though I may have secrets, I have never sought to hide my bisexuality.
