I first discovered Gary's music in 1980, when I picked up 'Telekon' and also saw the man live on the Teletour. As we drove back after the show, my older brother said to me, "Benj, I'm really sorry that was your first concert, because you'll never see one that good again!" Of course, with the passage of time and with many other shows by other artists, he was only proven right... until this year's Exile tour! Other artists I enjoy almost all fall into the "alternative/ college radio" category, with Morrissey, the Pet Shop Boys, Boy George and Culture Club, and Tori Amos as some of my main faves, but the "new romantics" are the sound closest to my heart (primarily Ultravox, Japan, and Visage) and Gary is the very voice of my soul. I love to collect music, and I'd love to share any and all that I have with nayone interested. (I can't yet dub anything onto disc, but I could certainly tape anything I have for those interested. Drop me a line; let me know!) As we were driving back from Pontiac, Michigan after his concert there and on our way to his next in Chicago, my wife Valerie asked me, "So, how does it feel to have seen him again after so many years?" I told her, "Words can not describe it. I've loved this man for so long, without ever encountering anyone else who was a fan... It's like coming to an oasis after crawling hundreds of miles through the desert." My love to all you other fans out there. I wish I could've met you long before this. Benjamin Iglar-Mobley P.S. Being new to the digest, I don't know if anyone posted the album review and article from the "Illinois Entertainer" newsmonthly? If not, I'd be happy to post my copy! To: HOWDY!!!! King Richard here.........I was reading the digest and a came across the letter from "D"(dagon?). Ok, a bootleg is a live recording or a hard to get recording(something out of print) or a personal compilation of the artist.... what you are talking about is making a copy of an existing recording of an artist that to make a copy of would take money out of the pocket of the artist....Now if that was what "bootleg" was, why would GARY say he didnt mind a mild bootleg scene around his fans??? Thats why he lets 'em talk camera's into the shows. You are wrong about no one wanting them, it is something that you didnt have, and no show is the same. An example, I am also a fan of WALL OF VOODOO, and just traded for the DAMIT TAPE. What happened was the former lead singer of W.O.V, ANDY PRIEBOY, was going to be playing a show in L.A, and a guy who does porno's named TOMMY DAMIT asked him if he could make a video recording of his show, he was a big fan and would just be in the back... ANDY said sure, and TOMMY shot the show from the back of the club, not great sound, shot is pretty good though..And at times ANDY lookes at the camera and smiles, once he waves... afterward, he asked if he could see it..He loved it and gave TOMMY his blessing to trade it heaviily on the net, ANDY does not make a penny.. but his fans are doing some serious trading to get THE DAMIT TAPE... You see, as a fan, you should be a little curious about GARY'S bottleg stuff, I mean look on the digest..If no one wants these, why is everyone asking about them???? I AM ONE.....and i found a guy out of south carolinia that deals in bootlegs, but he does charge, if you are interested email me and i will give you the phone number he handed to me...Dagon, this was nothing personal, please dont take it as such.....just trying to give the side of a collector....PLEAS TRY THIS EMAIL INSTEAD, IT WILL GET TO ME FASTER!!!!!!! kingofeightiesmusic@angelfire.com see you guys later...."I've never felt good, I've never felt bad, I've never felt much at all...." I'm in a record store, at the Gary section, and there's an album I've never seen before full of songs I've never heard-- often it's a live album. I've had this dream so many times I've been able to recognize it while it's happening, and the last few times I've tried racing to the register so I can get the album home and tape it so I'll at least have a copy when I wake up. Well, on Tuesday of last week that dream came true. Literally. Before picking up the "Tubeway Army" reissue, I'd never even heard of the 'Live at the Roxy' bootleg! That night I was screaming with audiophilic bliss. Now, I know the sound is "quite poor" and the music is of the older/"punky" variety of Gary, but I adore it! I love those older songs; among Gary's albums, "The Plan" is one of the more frequent visitors to my stereo. Sympathy to "NickYak@aol.com" for his/her disappointment, but I felt none. I was fortunate enough, years ago, to find the two "Asylum" box sets at Tower in L.A. for about fifty dollars each (I think they must not have realized they were four-cd sets) so I already had the b-sides, etcetera that yon Yak was missing. (Take heart; I'm sure you'll be getting them when "The Plan" is reissued.) I do have a question (or two) for digest members, though. Gary is listed as doing all the vocals on the 'Live at the Roxy' set, but I could swear it is someone else singing the opening track, "Positive Thinking." Does anyone know definitively who the owner of that voice is, Gary or no? Is it Paul? [Incidentally, SOMEONE has been snubbed for vocal credits, because no one else is listed even as backing vocal for the set, yet there are clear lines that carry more than one voice.] Also, as much as I love the songs, I find it impossible to understand the words to the ones I haven't heard elsewhere. Does anyone have printed lyrics for these songs, or know where such lyrics are posted? Thanks, and love to you all. In this message, please let us know who you >are, who some of your favorite artists are, how long you have listened >to Gary Numan. Let us know if you play any instruments or anything else >that might come to mind. > I have been listening to Gary Numan since 1979 when a friend of mine in high school returned from a summer trip in London with a copy of Replicas. Instantly hooked and consequently hooked in several more of my friends. Avid collector of Numan recordings until around 1989, when my interest started to wane. I've recently become active in Numan with the reissues from Beggars Banquet, in particular with Living Ornaments '79 & '81. I had the original boxset and listened to that constantly during university. The double-disc reissues are just what I've been looking for, although I feel swindled buying the original CD issues from Beggars Banquet back in '87 (oh well...there's always a price to pay!). I saw Numan during his '82 tour(or was it '83?...too long ago!) in Austin, TX and got to meet him after the show. Definitely a highlight. He not only signed autographs (there were only 5 of us present) but got his band to sign them as well. I missed out on the big US tour since I recently was transferred by my company to Venezuela. Maybe I'll catch him the next time around. I have an old Juno 106 that is currently gathering dust in storage in the US. I also like listening to Bill Nelson, Japan (and their various solo offshoots), Man or Astro-Man? and Severed Heads. Thanks for the mailing list. It's a great way of getting re-acquainted with Numan. Norrid" Subject: Introduction To: Hey Ho ! My name is Kelly Norrid a 28 yo male from S.E. Texas. I have been a fan of Gary Numan's for at least 18 years when I was first introduced to his music from my brothers. Before the Internet it was difficult being a Numan fan in the U.S. because of the lack of information on what he was doing. Any time I visited a record store I headed right for the N's to see if I could find any albums but almost always had to resort to special orders and small "import" sections. Fortunately ,with the help of friends, I was able to keep a good track of his latest releases. I will always be a bit partial to the early recordings (the music of my youth) but, upon release of Exile I must say.....DAMN this is the best yet. There are very few albums that I can't stop listening to and Exile has made the strongest impression on me over any other album to date (Numan recordings as well as others). I have always thought he was a musical master and this proved it beyond any doubt. Among other artists I hold in VERY high esteem are: first and foremost PETER MURPHY then, XTC, David Bowie, Adam Ant, B-52's who like Gary Numan still churn out some good music. And others like the Police, The Damned, Ultravox and others get regular play. I am currently a Biology major hoping to get work with the Texas Parks And Wildlife Dept. after graduation. I used to sing and play bass in a band but, that was many moon's ago. I am looking forward to keeping up with the latest Numan info on this list.-----best to all, Kelly Norrid p.s. special thanks to gary for the u.s. tour....it was one of the best shows i have ever seen !!!! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jun 1998 17:23:21 -0400 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Live at Rock Garden? To: Gary Numan Thanks as always to Steve Webbon for his input. I often wondered why Gary said That's Too Bad was due out in "a couple of= weeks" to paraphrase. However Steve's contact (Mario) provides a possible= explanation in that it WAS originally scheduled for 1977, around the time= Tubeway Army was playing the Roxy. Despite this, Mario goes on to say that the gig was actually recorded in 1978 at Rock Garden, but he doesn't say why. I'd be interested to hear hi= s reasons, since he obviously knows his stuff. Unless there's firm evidence= , I think it remains an open question. On the issue of re-mixers & co-producers, in 1987 when I was dancing to Bomb The Bass & S'Express, I was itching for Gary to have his singles heavily remixed. He hadn't done so, although in retrospect this was probably more because of the expense than any deep rooted aversion. = It's taken me a long time, but I can finally truthfully say that I like Gary the way he is. Outside & Antichrist Superstar may be great albums, b= ut they are as much Brian Eno & Trent Reznor as they are David Bowie & Maril= yn Manson. I hope Gary Numan records are always 'just' Gary Numan records. BTW, Arthur Numan made his debut at the World Cup yesterday in a depressingly dull match between Holland & Belgium. Ironically enough, he looks rather like David Bowie circa 1997. Matthew Roberts "The artistic genius wants to give pleasure, but if his work is on a very= high level, he may easily lack people to appreciate it... His pipe sounds= , but no one wants to dance." Friedrich Nietzche Oh yeah, someone was complaining a while back about "Kill the children of= Eden" (even though it doesn't literally mean children and even though it was supposed to be ironic). How about "Kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman th= at hath known a man by lying with him; but all the women-children that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."? Who could have ordered the mass slaughter of children and rape of thousan= ds of young women? = Actually, it was Moses. Don't believe me? Just read Numbers. Perhaps Gary should read the Bible after all... for artistic inspiration :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jun 1998 20:00:21 EDT From: PeterPanda@aol.com Subject: Miscellany From The Previous Digest To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings everyone! It's been a long time since I last chimed in with something to say. Nothing in particular motivated me, but figured I'd respond to a few items from the last Digest (#442). STRANGE CHARM CDs: To answer the question on the value between the first and second pressings of _Strange Charm_ on CD; it would depend entirely on whether or not the individual looking to buy is a completist or not. If they are then the first pressing is worth considerably more given how rare it is. I believe the original pressings for both _Strange Charm_ and _The Fury_ (from 1986) were only 500 each. Additionally, for some strange reason known only to Pinnacle, many of those original _Strange Charm_ CDs went to the US market instead of the UK. I once owned three of them that I bought at a local "Sam Goody" record store (an amazing thing as this chain is notoriously crappy - even "Our Price" in the UK is better!) for a mere $12.00 each. Before the re-release came out, this was the only pressing available. For those who don't care to have every pressing, just a good CD recording, the re-issue must have dropped the demand for the original CD considerably. At one time I knew of some UK fans who were offering close to $100 for the original pressing. Today it probably fetches about half that amount. BOOTLEGS: What the Numan organisation does not appreciate are priates. Pirating can range from the outright duplication of an official release (even made to look like the original - see Chinese Government for more details on this method) to the mass production of illegally recorded concerts with an intent to make a profit (typically an obscene one). The recording of concerts for fans to swap amongst themselves has never been a concern of Numan's for many of the reasons mentioned here previously. NUMAN HITTING GOD: It is conceptually possible, given that there are too many individual interpretations of God's nature and disposition to list here, that in Numan's view God can be hit in the face Because this is an impossibility to some does not make it an impossibility of fact. BEGGAR'S BANQUET RE-ISSUES: This message portion of my posting is not just for the general population of the Digest but also for Steve Webbon in particular. I just wanted it to be known that I disagree with the comments from the previous Digest concerning the inclusion of the "Live At The Roxy `78" bootleg. I grant the point that it is unpolished and, coming as it did from an audience hidden microphone (probably of dubious quality), isn't of the greatest sonic quality. Having said that, I beleive it is also a great historical piece that one can easily skip over when not in the mood. I enjoyed hearing these songs (many of which only exist in these live versions). Thank you for including them as bonus tracks. I feel that was a wonderful gesture to the fans and hope to see similar inclusions on the future re-issues. To have included the early singles like "That's Too Bad" and "Blue Eyes" wouldn't have made too much sense as they rightfully belong on any planned re- issue of _The Plan_ (hint, hint, Steve). My only gripe with these re-issues, and it's very minor, is that I would have liked the booklets to have been on glossy paper so that they'd hold up better over time. I did enjoy the detail inside them; from the thoughtful narratives to the lyrics and period photos. Nice job Steve and Beggar's Banquet (great price too!)! Now, I heard a nasty rumour from a reliable source back east in Massachusetts who told me that Beggar's Banquet was going to release _The Pleasure Principle_ and _Telekon_ and then stop. Please tell me this isn't true. I want to see _Dance_ and _I, Assassin_ re-issued as well. Particularly the latter with "Music For Chameleons (Extended Version)" and the radio promo remix of "White Boys And Heroes" included as bonus tracks. Well, that's all from me for now! Me! The question in Evan's mind would be whether the rest of the audience would enjoy it. Also don't forget that TFI is considered the most important showcase by record and management companies. Evans can virtually pick and choose who comes on. It is extremely competitive. Eagle Records are so useless they would struggle to get him on a show on Channel 5 at 4am on a monday morning. If he thinks its a good idea he can organise for someone to make the approach.
