Touring Principle Tubeway Army/Mean St bootleg ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jun 1998 23:31:16 -0500 From: Valerie Iglar-Mobley Subject: "Bombers" & "Stormtrooper..." lyrics To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Dear Marcia (and anyone else interested), Here are the lyrics to those two songs as printed in the Japanese "Asylum" box sets of Gary's Beggars Banquet albums (with some small editorializing, sorry, couldn't stop myself): "BOMBERS" Look up, I here the scream of sirens on the wall. I see a policeman crying in the back of a dying ford. [I think that's actually "back SEAT of a dying Ford" ed.] Hotel waiters leave the bedrooms of stars who are far too old And no-one ever told me that I could be so cold. I see an old man knocked to the ground And beaten by the vicar's wife. No-one stops to help; they're far too busy Trying to save their own lives. A tiny girl screams for mother and wanders out into the street. A saw her go down underneath a thousand people's running feet. All the nurses pulling [probably "pull THE"] needles from their arms Hope it lasts the night. All the soldiers curse the day they joined the army And prepare[d] to fight. In silent bars, in silent rooms, in silent cars you hide where you can. And me I know just where you are, You see, I'm a bomber man. Bombers fight at zero feet. Bombers fight at zero. [In the demo version on "The Plan" and the live version from "Living Ornaments '79" Gary has "All the JUNKIES pull the needles from their arms..." I heard that Gary was under pressure to change it to "nurses" on the single version so it might get some airplay.] "STORMTROOPER IN DRAG" So, here am I, quite by chance near the phone. I could call and make you crawl into bed. Questions, always questions, I'll just speak in slow motion About obsessions with boys on the floor. Take that smile off your face, wipe that tear from your eye, Don't say you're sorry for me. Now look at me, like a stormtrooper in drag, And I'll bet you feel exactly like I do. It's so disgusting, I'm so tired of rhythm And needles in arms. I don't want your point of view. Nothing to do, nothing to steal, and there's nothing to say. Love it, love it, I need to. [I think some lyrics have been left out, but Gary does a lot of improvising in this song, so the transcriber can be forgiven.] "Stormtrooper..." introduced the sort of slurred, rambling, ad libbed singing Gary did on a few songs around this time, my favorite of which is "I Sing Rain." I love that song! But the lyric booklet in the "Asylum" box just gives the note "(ad libbed)" for its lyrics, so let me pose a challenge to my fellow digesters: Anyone care to take a shot at writing down the lyrics for that song? Love to you all, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley P.S. Can I just say that I LOVE my "Asylum" box sets? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jun 1998 00:10:47 -0700 From: dagonet@netwide.net (Don McCrum) Subject: A Thank You, Of Sorts.... To: "Gary Numan List" D. McCrum Not exactly perfect (only a first draft) but here it is.... Consider it a personal thank you note, G.W. ----- Old World Comes Apart "Faith. And magic." "And I believe in love and wonder," she says. "Same thing," I say. There's something different that I will never comprehend behind those eyes, beyond that hair, beyond and above those curves. Her lips form a circle around her words, softening them before my cynicism can manipulate them against their will into what they are not. "What, you got a new priest in your temple, some other extended metaphor like that?" I imagine her as an amazon, in the outfit, a flowery headdress, pearls and weapons hugging her curves and emphasizing the green in her eyes. Water flowing in the background, somewhere, putting a slight mist over her, softening even more. I see white and grey, and imagine a smell like freshly cut grass and vanilla. This picture is not her. I like the one I see before me. Hair that hasn't been overly brushed into false beauty. An arm that has a hint of stubble under it. A leg that could not hunt me down. Curves that may not be perfect, but they are not in need of softening. A smell of having showered in the morning, and having lived since then. I even like the line of red in her eyes. She's losing sleep for me. I don't even want to visualize what I must look like. A drop of water smacks against a dirty pan in the kitchen sink. I laugh. "You applying?" I feel her lips so close to mine, yet not touching. I feel her breath embracing my skin and letting me know that more may not always be more. I feel the hint of cinnamon, of wine, of a reflection of myself, inverted, in her eyes. I feel. "Sentio ergo sum," she says. I think that's what she's saying. Not sure. "Latin," I say. "A dead language." She pulls away from me, as if I had slapped her, as if something was broken. As if I had said something wrong. I touch her hand, and realize that I had slapped her, but with more than my hand. "A dead language for dead cynicism." I force myself. Feel. I feel cynicism burning off. Almost painful, almost the burning away of the self. But I remind myself as I feel her lips on mine that I cannot be cynical. I, as a human, cannot be cynical. That's something else working against me. I feel the last ember dying, and enjoy the heat from the sun. "I am.... I am," I say. "I am in...." "Quit...telling...me." She puts a finger over my lips. "I feel, therefore I am," she says as she leans away from me. She is into the corner, looking at me, smiling. Complete, whole, one idea of beauty as I perceive the universe in her human form. I see her. I witness her. "Too much homework makes the home like work," I say. I place my face on her stomach, and try to remember what her lips are like. So close, yet they are passed. I can remember the touching of flesh, the feeling of her blood coursing through and resonating into my lips. I, I understand her. Now, I remember. As I raise my eyes and look up, I feel my heart, resonating into and around her. I see her eyes close, slowly, half-moons, waning into newness. The curve still on her lips as she uses her arm for a pillow. I pull my legs up, under myself. I feel her heart in her stomach, a little gurgling, just enough to remind me that this divinity is human. A breathing human who has loved like I have loved, who has lost like I have lost, who is asleep beneath me for this night like never again. The drip in the sink cleans the dirty pan a little more. To the rhythm of her heart, I allow my eyes to close. Her beating sun warms me as I sleep. ----- Peace D * * * God must be a woman, because I believe in love and wonder -- Gary Numan (and me) dagonet@netwide.net ICQ #12788034 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jun 1998 22:29:58 -0700 From: GOTHFREAK Subject: Bauhaus Coming to Vancouver! Tee hee, the hilarity! It was worth the well-needed giggle... Thanks go out to the person who sent me "The Unborn" on video - thanks a lot! It was a horrible movie (and seeing "Friends" actress Lisa Kudrow, playing the awesome part of the health clinic receptionist, dumpy and dark haired was amusing) but the soundtrack was good...should have picked it up when I saw it. Is there a structure, relating the first five songs to the second set of five? Kind of interesting how "Question of Faith" is "answered" by "Magic" and how "Scar" is answered by "The Seed Of A Lie." Although, "Love and Napalm" seems to be related to "Deadliner". Maybe it's just me, with the overly-analytical English Professor mind. If it's not just me, that's very, VERY impressive. You are wrong Austin. Gary has just requested on his web site www.Numan.co.uk for fans not to e-mail him directly. That aside, It is irrelevant whether or not TFI Friday is considered the most important showcase by record and management companies. (Simple Minds, Boy George to name a few, new and up and coming artistes) Chris Evans is a fan of Gary Numan, it's his show run by his production company so why not go right to the top and show him that Numan still has a lot of interest in the marketplace and if you add a humorous slant to it by suggesting *HE* badgers Gary into taking him up in the air in an aerobatics plane then it will do no harm whatsoever. What does do harm is protesting outside Radio 1 in London like a demented obsessed fan. That really got Gary somewhere. If it's done right then Gary has as much chance as any other act to get on the show. Let's face it he's not going to get there on the basis of record sales. Is this bootleg sought after/worth buying? And what's a reasonable price to pay? On the subject of TFI Friday, competition may well be fierce to secure a spot on the programme, but Evans' enormous ego directs him to try and shape the zeitgeist as well as to reflect it; hence the frequent appearance of his mates and pop chums Texas (on the basis that he fancies the singer) and others like Paul McCartney and Chris Rea who wouldn't know fashion if it slapped them in the face. Given the considerable army of anti-Evans types in the media, it would IMO be best for Numan to avoid any interview, where he would, in any case, be wide open to the usual gags about hair loss and plane crashes. Far more preferable would be a straightforward four minute slot to do a live version of an Exile track, complete with top light show, good sound and large moshing crowd for which TFI Friday is rightly renowned. Keep the faith, Phil. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
