How about...... "rain, rain, Rain, RAIN, RAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNN" Ok, a more serious observation would be that I'm sure there's a line in there that goes - "but I've never been loved by boys"...well, he sings "BOooooooyyyssssss" actually. Gary was asked what he sang on this once - I think he said he had no idea, he made it up on the spot... >A local pal (on this list) came back from Italy with some good Numan singles >(in Italian no less!). Mama mia! How long before someone writes in and says "WHAT? Gary singing in Italian?! I wanna hear it!" Mind you, Gary singing in Italian - wouldn't that be something?! :-) >Amazon.com's new music site is selling the Numa Years box set for the >staggeringly low price of $52.99. I figured others would be interested. Just a quick word to the wise for anyone from the UK ordering CDs from Amazon, CDNow or anywhere else in the States. If the package looks too obviously like a parcel (eg - box set size) you get whacked for VAT and import duty. I bought a box set recently thinking I'd save about 15 pounds on the UK price - in the end after paying the duties I ended up saving about a fiver - still worthwhile, but just be warned! In my experience, single CD size orders don't attract any attention and get through ok. It was at The Fighter Meet in the late 80's that I tactlessly pointed out= that Bowie would have been worried that his last album only went to No.3 = in the charts. Gary replied "I wish I had those sort of problems". He WASN'T= amused. = I also once said I was surprised that Gary's singles didn't do better in the charts. I had my reasons but didn't get the chance to explain them. H= e cut me off.... "I'm not" and that was that. Mind you, better than the first time I "met" him. He was signing copies o= f The Fury at HMV in Oxford Street. It should have been one of the defining= moments of my life. I think I had bunked off school and I had queued up f= or about two hours. I didn't think I'd ever actually be a professor, so I decided to try a band (while I'm pushing my luck). I have "classical" (beware the quotes) training on piano, so, of course, I'm the drummer (doesn't make sense to me, either). But it does put me on keyboards, too.... Have one friend on guitar and another singing.... Figured I'd program the keyboards and/ or play bass until I/ we find...more people. Any suggestions/ info on either a drum machine or a keyboard (type, price range, etc.) would be greatly appreciated. And.... Anyone know where I can find tab for "Do You Need The Service?" I figured I'd program that in, for starters. (I have a lousy ear for figuring out music.) P.S. The guitarist has the harder edge (Korn, Life of Agony, etc.). Singer's a fellow egg-head English major-type (Feminist-Studies to boot). I'm a retired "Goth" ...(more of those quotes). The only band/ music we really have in common is...Gary Numan, of course.... To: "Gary Numan" Excellent news on the AFE site about Numan and Afrika Bambaataa recording a new version of Metal (I think it was Metal anyway) together last week in London. This was reported in NME. *And* the NME didn't make any saracstic comment either. Amazing. Things are definately on the up Digesters. Regarding the accuracy of the Asylum lyric booklet, are the lyrics for We are Glass correct? I always imagined he was singing about Whores, but was amazed to find that it was infact Floors. Does anyone have an alternative source - for instance either from any early GNFC newsletter or from a 1980 edition of Smash Hits? > > Consider it a personal thank you note, G.W. > I'm sure he will be delighted. > Sorry! You are wrong Austin. Gary has just requested on his web site > www.Numan.co.uk for fans not to e-mail him directly. Far more preferable would be a straightforward four minute slot to > do a live version of an Exile track, complete with top light show, good > sound and large moshing crowd for which TFI Friday is rightly renowned. > Yes you're right. I've changed my mind. Now is the time to move away from hair transplants, Gemma, petrol bombs under cars, crashing. All these stories have made Numan an interesting interviewee over recent years and have given him coverage in the media. However, we're close to him becoming a Rod Stewart type. Faith No More's appearance on TFI was great. Something similar from Numan would do wonders. Something from Exile? Only if it was Dark or The Angel Wars. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi All, After a brief bout of lurking, i'm verbal again... More fuel for the lyric debate...this is what Gary said about the Asylum CDs: (taken from a 1991 interview) "Most of the lyrics are wrong actually! They're awful, I'm actually convinced they didn't listen to the record and they've simply written down the way it sounded...there is no relationship at all to what is actually sung. If they'd only rung me up and asked, I could have given them all the proper words." AND regarding the orderform for Numan merchandise: i direct your attention to the full color copy of the Exile Tour merchandise orderform that is available on Joey Lindstrom's website The World Wide Webb [www.interocitor.net] If you couldn't make it to the show...here is what the t-shirts look like... Finally, as far as i know, The Touring Principle '79 video (originally released by Warner Home Video here in the US) has been out of print for many years. Are you kidding? Please, an end to this Evans crap. Here's the simple truth; having worked in the London television industry, I knew Chris Evans before he became famous, when he was a struggling unknown wannabe radio DJ with bad hair. He was a wanker then and is still a wanker now, only less funny. Numan should not be mentioned in the same sentence. Evans took the piss out of him once live on radio at an airshow. I really don't think Numan needs this kind of nerdy exposure. David Frost yes, Chris (I'm so fucking rich) Evans, no. Absolutely not. Nyet. Ne nada. In a most recent Digest, a member made mention to the recent Ozz Fest held in my home town of Milton Keynes, and what a good idea it would be for a Numan Fest to be arranged with bands such as Depeche Mode, Human League etc. Well I am sure that most of you will be aware that Depeche Mode are touring this year in conjuction with their Singles Collection 1985-1998 release. Dates for the UK have been announced, 29 Sept. London Wembley, 2 Oct. Manchester Nynex, and 3 Oct Birmingham NEC. I know that other European dates and US dates are yet to be announced. Also, I recently saw an advertisement for another 80's concert, this time three bands will appear. These are Culture Club, Human League, and ABC. I have the ad at home and if anyone is intersted email me privately (cland@acl.memec.com) and I will give you more details. I would also like to say hello to any of the Numan fans that I spoke to whilst on vacation in the US that went to the Kraftwerk concert in LA. I shoke hands with a guy wearing an Exile t-shirt whilst in the queue, don't know if he is a list member though. Best regards to you all, hope you are still alive Marlene?!!!! On Riana's, opps, I mean Our Sainted Lady Riana ;), page she has an interview with Gary in which he indicates that he dosen't listen to any 80's music anymore. Which I found strange since Depeche Mode was always in his top five of favorite bands...but his musical tastes are a changin' towards the more industrial, NIN direction. If any band which has such a large and devoted following as NIN or Smashing Pumkins were to have Gary open for them, I think he and his musical presence may be "lost" due to the overwhelming amount of people at the event *not* there to see Gary. Just a partially coherent thought in a cruel hot and humid environment. P.S. Rev, as politely as possible, I am inquiring. PLEASURE PRINCIPLE sounds better than ever remastered, and the three instrumentals (especially "asylum'") are excellent. Some of you may already have the other live bonus tracks which were featured on the EXHIBITION CD (Bombers, On Broadway, and Remember I Was Vapour) . TELEKON also has a few nice treats---its great to finally hear I DIE:YOU DIE (alternate version) and WE ARE GLASS mixed in as if it was how the LP was originally released, and A GAME CALLED ECHO is one of Gary's most underrated tracks. The piano version of DITP is beyond beautiful...I wish I still had the 7". The linear notes are very informative (though much of it was explored in the PTTA autobiography), and it is still amazing to me just how much influence NUMAN was to the hip hop scene. I was a bit surprised by the very subtle differences which I'll call the "extras" on the Telekon CD. Did anyone else spot them or any others? The first 12 seconds of "Remind Me To Smile" is pretty cool, and just a touch different from the vinyl release. I'm not sure which version I like better though. On "Remember I Was Vapour", some synth sounds from the middle of the track are completely missing! The best way to describe the sounds I'm refereing to are...it's the bit which "moves" from the left to the right (or both) channels during the middle of the track. I love this part of the original track because I can pretend I'm playing it on make believe keyboards :-) Again, it sounds a bit different from the vinyl version without this bit. I was all keyed up for this "alternative version" (as listed on the CD) of "I Die: You Die". The alternative part as best as I can tell is...it's a bit "bassier" in the middle of the tune at one point. I've compared it a few times to the original, and that's about all I can tell. I even through the "US version" on the old turntable to compare it to both the "alternative version" and the original vinyl version. For the life of me, I can't tell ANY difference in the "US version" (released during the 1987 "Exhibition" period) from the original version. Can anyone tell me what was unique about the "US version" of "I Die: You Die"? All 3 tracks I mentioned above with their very subtle differences could be easily missed unless you were listening for them. I'd love to hear other people's opinions on these Telekon extras.
