To: numan@cs.uwp.edu WHAT is that horrendous squawk exactly at 3:00 into the song Crash on Dance? It bugs me every time I listen to it. I can't believe it was left on the final cut. Tubeway Army remastered? Hmmm, I might skip buying that CD for a while as I like the "diamond in the rough" feel. (I think I just contradicted myself a little!) My 24"x24" Replicas framed poster looks great - it greets everyone as they come into my apartment. A few comments: "Wow, looks great! Where'd you get it?" and "He looks like a Nazi". There's a few other Numan goodies also up for grabs. If you'd like the full list, please email me, and I'll get one right out to you! I'm NOT doing this for profit...just to share the good cheer with other Numan listeners out there (and to make some room at home!) It's getting crowded in here!! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Ziggy Blum wrote: >> And, well, I'm sorry, but "Absolution" is on the bottom of the list. It works fabulously for the album as a whole: it comes in as a moment's break in the clouds, a cool wind in hell, a moment's respite from the maelstrom of the rest of the "story," and sort of brings humanity into a really nice momentary spotlight. And yes, yes, it's all very sweet. It's just not as barbed (and hence not as catchy) as the rest of the material. And no matter how sincere, the lyrics aren't mind-bogglingly original. Not that I'm complaining: It's not a weak spot at all. <<< I love how songs appeal so differently to people. This is my favourite song from the album. I heard it first on tour (didn't have the album yet) and it was the song I was singing on the way home and all the way to the record store the next day to purchase the album. And if someone asked my advise on what would do well as a US single, I would "Absolution" over "Dominion Day" because I think it has more universal appeal. The song could have been on the "City of Angles" soundtrack -- "I'd walk out of heaven just to be with you". I do like the imagery of the song -- biblically speaking -- climbing a high mountain to look at you (Moses climbing the mountain to speak to God via the burning bush), -- sell my soul to the devil -- Abraham about to kill his only son because God "asked him to" And of course this song goes nicely w/ Lestat's travels in "Mennoch the Devil" as well. So it may not be "as barbed" in attitude as the other songs on the album, but I certainly found it addictive, catchy and powerful. Vie la difference! It was played at the beginning while they showed little previews of the stories coming up. The Dark intro played throughout the bit on Chinese prisoner organ harvesting. (It was a shock last week to see a young guy in an Exile T-shirt, too!) I work in a diner at a Greyhound station (like the truly talented artiste, musician, and craftsperson I am) and there's a high volume of traffic for the holiday weekend. I wore the Exile T-shirt today, and, in addition to the "Who's Gary Numan" questions I've gotten before (one little tart said, "Oh, were you 15 in 1980? That was the year I was born. Not to make you feel old, or anything.") I had three or four (!) conversations with people who were marginally familiar with his name from *recent* press about the Exile tour (and one person who was re-discovering Telekon, and had no idea Gary was still in business). I did my part for the cause by being informative and enthusiastic (which was easy). Another little sting was in a coversation with a Gothy fellow who said he had some e-friends who had been to various shows on the tour (to see Switchblade): "They said it was really weird; there were all these old punks and stuff." I gave him a big smile and said, "That'd be me." Which rather shut him up. :-) Hey, sonny, I was a punk before you were out of diapers. :-\ It's definitely a good sign of higher name-recognition (though I'm afraid I could selfishly get just a bit jealous. I'll try not to. I wish him lots of success though it was kind of nice being in an elite society all these years). I know he's shown in up in quite a few publications lately, like Resonance and Keyboard (though I wish they'd stop making it sound like he hasn't done any music since 1982. Can't they damn well get their facts straight?) zg Ziggy Blum Ziggy's House O' Vermin zigi@ravenland.com --------------------------- Everything will be all right Everything will turn out fine Some nights I still can sleep And the voices pass with time... -Sisters ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Jul 1998 21:44:26 +0100 From: "Nigel Lunn" Subject: Nicholson & Numan Rip Off To: For all those people ripped off by Matt Nicholson his phone number is 0181 3327245. To: "Gary Numan" I fear that my subject line may be too late. It was only a couple of digests ago that I expressed a view that GN has to be careful with the media opportunities that he chooses to accept. My view was that if he appeared on another chat show talking about hair transplants, the 80s, crashing, marrying a fan, death threats in his hey days, having lots of money, groupies, etc then he would turn into a Rod Stewart type. Rod Stewart is an interesting bloke to have on a show - great to interview and reminisce with, but you would never invite him on to sing his new single. I saw a trailer a few days ago for a TV programme being shown in the next few days. I think it is on the BBC, Perhaps on Monday (?) and might be called Lakesiders. I'm really not sure. Please check the press for details!!!! I only caught a glimpse of the trailer. It seems to be a programme taking the piss (albeit in an endearing way) out of Essex people. (Essex is a county in the UK where the inhabitants are supposedly culturally barren, conservative in both life and politics, and lacking in both taste and morals). Lakeside is a large shopping centre in Essex where supposedly lots of Essex type people go. My attention was grabbed by a clip of footage of Gary and Gemma on their wedding day, in their horse drawn carriage with Gemma saying "I cannot believe that my dream of marrying Gary Numan has come true". Or something similar. (BTW, before I am flamed by angry Essex folk, I live 5 miles from the Essex border, and my mum was born and brought up in Essex! My cousin lives in Brentwood in Essex, is a car dealer, is very well off, and when he got married wore a bow tie, and left the church in a horse drawn carriage too). I will refrain from commenting until after I have seen the programme. However, I am not feeling very optimistic. Where is The Machman?!" Well Steve, The Machman has had very little time off from the vagaries of work, but never fear. After a brief respite in Niagara Falls, I'm rested and, like, got the lead out and stuff. In fact, the NAGNFC is pleased to announce the much awaited CHAPTER 10: CHARLOTTE. Like the Titanic movie, CHAPTER 10 was put back for several weeks to perfect every detail. It is chock full of Numan goodness featuring not only tons of pics from Charlotte, but even exclusive audio from the show for your downloading pleasure! So come pay the NAGNFC a visit. Help yourself to donuts and cider, later there'll be sing-a-longs. And to all those to whom I owe tapes, please forgive The Machman. The cassette featuring 'Are friends electric?' has 'Down in the park' on the other side and the 'We are glass' one has 'Cars' on the other side. I could have fibbed though and pretended that I actually did have these and that I was the only one in the world with them. My girlfriend gets very jealous at my receiving of the twice weekly digest, so I was wondering if anyone knew of anything similar on these lines: Poetry (Yawn) Writing (2 yawns) and anything else to do with literature (Yawn, yawn, yawn snnnnn) It would make her very happy.
