Only a few have been mean spirited (one said "thats your problem, your not gay....so you cant possibly understand GARY'S music..) but they have mostly been trying to show me the lyrics they are talking about..O.K let me say this again... It was not meant as anything personal against anyone gay or bi-sexual. What i was saying is that everyone sees something different in his lyrics. Thats the great thing about his music. something different to everyone, I was just saying that I dont see the homoerotica, as in the lyrics that I have been quoted can be taken different ways, the song as a whole can be taken different ways. The way I take them is not in a homoerotica form, thats all..I am sorry if my opinion upset anyone, as it was never meant too....After all, the one person that it should have angered was BENJAMIN, and he told me to send it...I just want to end this by saying thank you for all the help, and your opinions, as i respected them as I hope you would respect mine...IF YOU WANT TO SEND ME EMAIL, TRY THIS ONE INSTEAD !!!!!!!!! kingofeightiesmusic@angelfire.com later, king richard ga ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Jul 1998 00:19:58 -0800 From: Derek Langsford Subject: Boxed set "missing" tracks To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Matthew Roberts commented: >The Numa Years may have been remastered, but I think only in the sense that >Steve Webbon mentioned in the last Digest. Yep, it's >good, but not as good as the Beggars Banquet remasters. Is it a sign of >Eagle/Cleoptra's true values??????? Brian Hammond and I wrote a long letter to Eagle with recommendations to Eagle on how to configure the Boxed Set. We were ignored but they passed it along to Gary who was not pelased with some of the things we said (Gary does not take criticism well). He did say, however, that the idea was not to put on everything that was available but to add the b-sides only and to reserve some material for later release (I assume as b-sides on singles). Why Metal Beat shoudl make it but not Tribal I do not know other than the fact there are fewer Sacrifice era extra tracks than Fury extra tracks. I still await the RSPCA 12" version of ISR. On Babylon, what is labelled as the 12" version is actually the 7". Another example of the quality control problem Gary had. While the visual presentation is excellent this is by no means the definitive or near definitive Numa collection, like the Asylum sets were for the BB catalogue. Austin said: >All in all not bad. But I think I would of preferred the albums to of been >released in their original form (as per the recent Beggars releases). My >fear is that Eagle will release these Numa CDs again in a few years time, >as single CDs with the original artwork and lyrics. They've got alot more >milking yet to do.... I think it was stated at the outset that Eagle would release these CDs individually at a later date. For that reason, in my and Brian's letter to Eagle we lobbied for an extra disc of rarities (MDM Italian mix, M+S vinyl mixes, the 12" versions of Fury b-sides, the 12" RSPCA ISR etc). But they didn't bite. The idea is that they will use these on later releases, presumably to keep the fans of older material buying the stuff. I guess I am falling into the old habit of criticising here when I should be grateful for these releases, but it's not as if this set is perfect. Waiting for the complete Numan catalgue to be consistently remastered and put onto DVD.... :-) Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek Langsford Ph.D. Environmental Management Specialist County of San Diego, Dept. of Planning and Land Use 5201 Ruffin Road, Ste. A few points from the recent digest: The Numa Years box set was released in the UK only by Eagle. Cleopatra had nothing to do with it, as they have decided to re-issue each of the Numa albums separately, one at a time, in the US. So the box set can not be taken as "a sign of Eagle/Cleopatra's true values". I have completed the artwork for Dark Light, Sacrifice, Dominion Day (7 track ep) and the 2cd compilation Remodulate (which I also compiled), all of which are being pressed and will have release dates in the next couple months. Currently I am working on the Fury re-issue. I waited until I got the box set to see what they had done, and I am going to make it different from the Eagle version. I am going to try and put some of the more sought after bonus tracks that many have requested. On Remodulate there are two never released on cd tracks that hopefully will please a few fans. Plus we ended up remastering four or five tracks to maintain a consistent sound quality. The cd-r version I have sounds great, especially the bonus tracks. I am quite happy with it. All of the cds I am doing (except Dark Light) have complete lyrics (well, not for the bonus tracks - I'd have to figure them out myself and that's a very hard task!), original artwork plus additional artwork. So hopefully those of you who can normally resist many of the re-issues will not be able to in this case! Sacrifice has four bonus tracks, two of which are the same as the box set's. (I did this months ago - before I knew what Eagle was doing). The Fury will possibly have five bonus tracks, not the same as the box set's. Thanks to PeterPanda for the compliment on the White Noise release. But I had nothing to do with it. They rushed that release out while I was working on the 2cd compilation (Remodulate). I'm glad you like the artwork, but I never would have just scanned the front cover and left the scan lines on the final product... and hopefully I would have corrected the mistakes in the liner notes. In other news, Cleopatra recorded the LA show on digital video, and the sound and visual quality is amazing. They sent a clip of Gary and Marilyn Manson doing DitP to MTV who played a portion on MTV news. Well, Marilyn's management freaked out and barred Cleopatra from releasing the footage. So for now the plans to release the show on home video have been shelved, as they don't want to release the concert without that song. Sadly... I just picked up the reissues of TA, Replicas, PP, and Telekon. Most of the bonus songs I had heard previously on vinyl, but I somehow don't recall ever hearing "do you need the service?". What a great song! The stop & go guitar/keyboard movement is refreshing, as is Gary's soloing(well done and melodic). When I mentioned to Gary in that the Numa CD didn't have the impact of the cassette version he ripped me saying it was stupid to compare cassette to CD. Well, I feel vindicated. The remaster is much brighter, punchier and has the power I remember from my old chrome Numa cassette. Still, it's a shame the bonus tracks are mixed too high in volume - accentuating the hiss. Here Am I is such a great track - should have been on the album instead of MDM or The Hunter. Nice to get my fave mix of MDM on CD - the extended is waaaay too long IMO. Contrary to the Berserker remaster binus tracks, the ones on Sacrifice are quieter than the album tracks, and have notably poorer production. Makes me wonder if they took the original tapes, DAT or just the Babylon CD and "remastered" the bonus tracks. Babylon 7 was, as one Digester put it, the worst sounding non-bootleg CD he'd heard. So while reamstering the tracks has made a difference in most cases, the uneveness of the bonus tracks v. album tracks, and the use fo the extended Call Out the Dogs makes the set that teensy but less than perfect and makes me wonder if Eagle's quality control is any better than was Numa's. If Eagle remaster the extended albums (unlikely) should we ask them to put on the album version of Call Out the Dogs on The Extended Fury CD :-) ? Picked it up a week after UK issue, only to find the store in tiny Encinitas, CA had it since the day after UK release. I paid $65.49 for it before sales tax which pushed it over $70 - still cheapar than CDNow but not as good as Amazon but then again, how long are people waiting for Amazon to deliver? Nice packaging. Would have preferred something that could stack alongside my other CDs but... Approach is like Asylum - black but with the album covers and photos in bright color. Nice contrast. Discs are attached to spindles on four mounted bases on the inside cover pages. Like was mentioned before, I too first wondered where Sacrifice was, but didn't have to look hard - the CD was making an impression on the booklet pages already. We have been having a heatwave here so I have only been able to listen to some it and with fans whirring in the background. Still, I think the remastering has improved things for some of the albums. Sacrifice is brighter, the highs are crisper but the midrange is still muddy. M+S is clearer too - I pick up more in the percission than I did - and the Heh, Heh Heys at the beginning of Generator do not seem as distorted as they were the first time around. Strange Charm has the volume fluctuations of the first pressing corrected. Berseker and The Fury sound punchier. Nice to have all the bonus tracks remastered too. Minor quibs: Less than 2 mins of new to CD music (No Shelter - the vinyl Berserker versions are edited from the extended versions) On some discs, most notably Berserker, the bonus tracks are louder than the album tracks - enough to make me dive for the volume control. No mention that the versions of Puppets and The Fear are the 95 remixes found on Babylon. Use of the 7" of This Ship Comes Apart rather than the 12" The accidental/erroneous use of the extended version of Call Out the Dogs on the Fury CD (I hesitate to ask Gary how that happened). Overall its a very nice production with a few minor flaws which seem to dog Gary noi matter what label he goes with. I also hope that the tracks still to make it to CD will come out at a later point on Eagle as Gary said. Shame it appears IRS have nixed the idea of Eagle Licensing their Numan material - incomprehensible. At least their albums sounded pretty good to start with. A bootleg album of this was released, if my memory serves me, which contained a very cynical deliberate mistake in that the cover was a photo of Fish from Marillion, the manufacturers obviously hoping to cash in by promoting it as an ultra-rare mispressing. Have no idea how the rumour started, but its most likely that any enthusiasm Evans has for Numan is purely on the basis of the new credibility generated by Random and other endorsements. It's no secret whatsoever that Evans' best mate and sidekick Danny Baker hates Numan with a vengeance (as he does all early 80's New Wave); and those of you wondering about the article in Q magazine circa 1992 and why it was so vicious, look no further than Danny Kelly of Under The Moon fame. He was a high level mover and shaker within Q at the time (might even have been editor), and like Baker, he detests Numan and his ilk. > I am 32 years old. His early stuff was definitely homoerotic. Some examples - The whole of Jo the Waiter - especially, 'Jo the waiter held me close, behind the door marked gentlemen' - story or not, to any young person confused about his or her sexual identity in 1978 - 9, this one line would, I'd imagine, speak volumes. There's more on Tubeway Army. 'Something's in The House' - 'The Queer is out of order and me I'm on the ground...' Then there's 'Replicas', the line, 'The driver wants to touch me, he mentions all the old cop bullshit, i try to back away but he's so strong i just can't move maybe i don't want to anyway' on 'It Must Have Been Years' springs directly to mind. How about - 'Queenie; From a doorway says, "You got time?"' Okay, so the very next line is, 'Panic - "Not tonight if you don't mind.', but there is that homosexual content. Or 'Friends' - 'I've got the time if you've got the money, mister...' Numan's lyrics were always sprinkled with homoerotic imagery, as was his look in the early days especially. You mention Duran and all the other new- romantic pretenders, but Numan became big in 79, two years before the new- romantic boom, and long enough after glam to make him pretty unique in his look, particularly for somebody who got as big as Numan did at the time. He was on his own with the eyeliner and dyed hair - all the punks at the time were just scruffs, the charts were full of piss-poor punk bands like Boomtown Rats. Other popular records of the time were Bee Gees and Cliff Richard and the Police. There was no Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet or Visage until way later. Any young gay had nowhere, musically, to turn except possibly Bowie and Bolan, who were pretty old-hat at that time (Punk had done a good job of discrediting any artist who had been around for over five years as has-beens) or the scruffy overly political rantings of Tom Robinson Band. All of a sudden they are confronted with a young guy in make-up singing this cool wierd stuff, they check out the albums and find plenty of (to them) homoerotic references. They went right over my head at the time, but they are there, and there are plenty more examples, especially in the early stuff.
