To: numan@cs.uwp.edu AScand7463@aol.com writes: > His early stuff was definitely homoerotic. > Some examples - The whole of Jo the Waiter - especially, 'Jo the > waiter held me close, behind the door marked gentlemen' - story or > not, to any young person confused about his or her sexual identity > in 1978 - 9, this one line would, I'd imagine, speak volumes. Or maybe not. If you allow yourself to interpret the lyrics as if Gary had written them in first person singular, then maybe you have a point -- though I am not entirely sure why anyone cares to focus in on another person's sexual life, be it Numan or God. Who cares? :-) The lyrics may have just as easily been written from the perspective of a female having an encounter with a male. Or a homosexual male having an experience with a male. In any case, why wax freudian with the interpretations? > How about - 'Queenie; From a doorway says, "You got time?"' Okay, > so the very next line is, 'Panic - "Not tonight if you don't mind.', > but there is that homosexual content. How is _that_ homosexual? And again, how do you get that it was Gary speaking about some real or imagined experience he had himself? I mean it is cool to read between the lines, but the immediate resonse of **WE GOT A HOMOSEXUAL HERE!!** sounds a little disprespectful - even if there _were_ something to the lyrics you quoted. > Numan's lyrics were always sprinkled with homoerotic imagery, Always? > as was his look in the early days especially. Here we go > You mention Duran and > all the other new- romantic pretenders, but > Numan became big in 79, > two years before the new-romantic boom, > > and long enough after glam > to make him pretty unique in his look, > particularly for somebody who > got as big as Numan did at the time. > He was on his own with the > eyeliner and dyed hair - all the punks What does wearing eyeliner and dyeing one's hair have to do with homosexuality? Please explain, because I occasionally wear eyeliner, have dyed my hair, and shop on both sides of the store - and I am not attracted to other males. Nor have I ever been. I guess if you are a very masculine type who thinks all males should look and dress in a certain clone-ish manner then I can see where you would connect men's fashion liberation(for lack of a better word/s) with homosexuality. Heck I would bet a lot of gay men would be offended by your stereotype. "Nu Man" is a particularly interesting stage name, and one that he has kept throught the years. Before I gathered where he was coming from, lyrically, I used to always think of Gary as some kind of voice for men(males). Men had never really done any group introspection (unlike women in the sixities & on) and there were ideas and lines in his lyrics that painted a grim, isolated, unexpressive world for the male half of homo sapiens. As crazy and far off as that sounds, that was one of the initial attractants that kept me wanting more of his music. yours, Michale ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 02:03:20 +0900 (JST) From: "*Bull*sEye)*" <5b3q2w@att.net> Subject: To: Authenticated sender is <5b3q2w@att.net> Subject: +BullsEye-*Targeting*Software*)+ Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit EMAIL MARKETING WORKS!! Bull's Eye Gold is the PREMIER email address collection tool. This program allows you to develop TARGETED lists of email addresses. Doctors, florists, MLM, biz opp,...you can collect anything...you are only limited by your imagination! You can even collect email addresses for specific states, cities, and even countries! All you need is your web browser and this program. Our software utilizes the latest in search technology called "spidering". By simply feeding the spider program a starting website it will collect for hours. The spider will go from website to targeted website providing you with thousands upon thousands of fresh TARGETED email addresses. When you are done collecting, the spider removes duplicates and saves the email list in a ready to send format. No longer is it necessary to send millions of ads to get a handful of responses...SEND LESS...EARN MORE!!! A terrific aspect of the Bull's Eye software is that there is no difficult set up involved and no special technical mumbo-jumbo to learn. All you need to know is how to search for your targeted market in one of the many search engines and let the spider do the rest! Not familiar with the search engines? No problem, we provide you with a list of all the top search engines. Just surf to the location of a search engine on your browser then search for the market you wish to reach...it's that easy! For instance if you were looking for email addresses of Doctors in New York all you would do is: 1) Do a search using your favorite search engine by typing in the words doctor(s) and New York 2) Copy the URL (one or more)...that's the stuff after the http://... for instance it might look like http://www.yahoo.com/?doctor(s)/?New+York 3) Press the START button THAT's IT!!! The Bull's Eye spider will go to all the websites that are linked, automatically extracting the email addresses you want. The spider is passive too! That means you can let it run all day or all night while you are working on important things or just having fun on your computer. His mates sitting behind me were constantly passing him nips of Cognac and vodka, so I was invited to join in. Although I was tired and just wanted to mellow out with Numan in my ears, I relented to their Russian hospitality (and because this guy was built like a tank, I thought that most probably no-one ever said no to him) politely accepted a few glasses. We gat talking, and my hazy knowledge of Russian told me he was the Olympic shot-put champion returning from some games in Bavaria. He asked me what music I was listening to so I replied English, and he told me that Russian rock was good shit. A few nips later, he wanted to listen to my Walkman so I plugged him into the "Dark Light" gig at full volume and he began smashing the flimsy Aeroflot armrests, punching the air and shouting "Powerful, powerful!" in Russian. He'd never heard Numan before of course, but when he handed my Walkman back an hour later, he announced in Russian "English music very powerful! Numan very good guy!" So there you go; Gaz has another fan in Russia ... And yes we made it safely into Moscow ... The album was recorded in 1978 and was not at the Roxy London an old punk club that Gary played in the early days. The recording was remastered from the bootleg album itself. The original versions of this album were pressed and sold through the Record Peddler (A Music Store in Manchester England) and came in a plain white cardboard sleeve with White labels then someone pressed more on cheaper Vinyl with the black and white sleeve (Example in the remastered sleeve notes of the CD). The White Noise White Heat track was not on the album but was pressed on a bootleg single. It was in fact Tubeway Army and Gary was indeed the lead vocalist on the album. 4) Warriors Tour There was a full recording (Video) of the Glasgow Apollo Warriors show by a UK TV company of which some brief excerpts were shown on TV. The full show was never featured much to my annoyance as I walked on stage at the encore and shook hands with Gary. There are mixing desk recordings of this show too as well as some good quality live recordings from fans. 5) Collection I might be selling some of my obscure rarities of Gary including Large ATCO recods screenprint poster from 1979 (This was done for record company in USA at the time of Pleasure Principle). Its a poster of Gary in Black woith Microphone in usual pose. I also have a London Underground Badge (Button in the US) that Gary gave me at a Tubeway army gig. Also have Warriors, Berserker promo tour posters and ton's of other stuff. I ill put a list of things together when I get time (If I get time) and possibly post detials here if the Digest don't mind if they do then I'll let you all know when I have the stuff for sale and you can e-mail me for a list. I also have the UK and French (With P/Sleeve) Tubeway Patrol singles. Most of the stuff I have had since Tubeway days onwards and is all my own collected stuff not bought from others. IMHO...i find myself extremely conflicted about all these new releases and re-releases...the collector in me wants to have every new release, but the reality is that i no longer have the copious amounts of disposable income that i did as a teenager (when i obtained the bulk of my Numan collection). And yes, there are times when i feel that the record companies are milking the fans...but, after all they are in the business of selling music. On the other hand, it really floats my boat that there are all these new young fans listening to gary's music...and i am extremely grateful that these "new" releases are there for the new and old fans to buy. Some of Gary's older material has become very hard to find indeed... So, while i sympathize with Derek; i also can see the positive side of having newly re-mastered albums available. My only beef is with the over-proliferation of those cheesy UK compilations... And in response to what "P.G. Whalley" wrote: >Oh per-lease, there's nowt wrong with Frank. Its a shame for the sizeable >minority of monogomous gay couples who get on with their lives without any >fuss that they have to put up with pretentious gay angst being publically >sanctioned at taxpayers cost from infantile selfish pricks like you. I'm sorry to digress from the topic of the Digest....but, as an openly bisexual polyamorous Numanoid, I feel the need to respond to this obvious flaming. Just as I have always spoken up when Gary and his music have been slagged. I will not tolerate verbal gay bashing. I thank you for your opinion, but if his message bothered you, ignore it, OK...'nuf said. To return to the subject of this digest... yes, i agree with Benjamin and Antonio re: the homoerotic content of Gary's lyrics. When i was a very confused teenager, Gary's music was for me, a way to feel uncomfortable and frightening emotions in small, compact bites. And because i connected with his themes of disconnection and alienation, and was totally smitten with his gorgeous blue eyes, his music was a wonderful place to escape to - find comfort in. I agree that everyone can find something different in his music...what i find truly amazing is the fact that he has deeply touched so many different people's lives in the 20-plus years of his career. I am sure that my life would be drastically different without his music. ________________________ obscure@blueneptune.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 07:13:24 -0500 From: "Troy L. Went to Now Hear This in Crestwood, MO yesterday and bought one of the 2 copies they had. So if anyone is interested they still have one copy left, at price of $74.99, a little high, but hey its NUMAN. (Also helps to have a understanding wife) I've only listened to The Fury, Machine & Soul so far both sound really good, the extra tracks are even better. Seeing that the extended version of Machine & Soul that I tried to purchase (3 times) never had the bonus tracks on them. I did read the liner notes for all, very good information. Now to the one question/draw back. Why are they using the image from Exile on the box set and cd's? Wouldn't the Numa image work better, seeing these albums are from the Numa Years. Also to report, have been able to convert another person into a Numaniod. I brought a Dawn shirt and the Numan Dawn cd from the Chicago show to a co-worker. He liked Sacrifice, sorry Numan Dawn so much he went out got Exile. Now this conversion did not take as long as it did with my wife, ha ha. Brad LaVoise ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jul 1998 08:03:02 -0800 From: alec way Subject: Satie and Trois Gymnopédies To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Minor Sage wanted to know who wrote Trois Gymnopédies. Well, Gymnopédies one-through-three were all written by none other than the mysterious Erik Satie (1866-1925)-- the Parisian half-Scot/half-French Rosecrucian, almost always penniless, composer. If you like Numan's version, I would really suggest picking up a copy of Satie's piano works that include all three Gymnopédies. They're easily available in any format. Also recommended are his Gnossienes and Nocturnes. They're similar in mood and atmosphere, as are certain works by Ravel and Debussy (who orchestrated Trois Gymopédies). In the book Erik Satie by Rollo H. Myers, the author states, "Satie, in fact, gave expression to what was latent in the consciousness of the world in which he lived; in other words he was the interpreter to the world of its own subconscious (aesthetic) dreams and aspirations." To me, that's what Numan's all about (along with, in their own ways, John Foxx, Kraftwerk, Cluster, Brian Eno, Bill Nelson, Can and Neu). Brian Eno's younger brother, Roger Eno, in fact put out an I'm-really-into-Satie, mostly piano, record a long time ago called Through The Blue (I think that's what it was called). Lovely - who knew "Friends"' working title was "Do Your Best" (LO '78)? :-) I'm no audiophile nor nitpicker, so I'm sure my opinion is so much bubblegum, but I like these CDs. They sound great - Live at the Roxy is so wonderfully lo-fi punka! :-) I was blown away right from the start - "Listen to the Sirens" really BOOMS! Some of the liner notes are, uh, enlightening, though - "Bombers" and "Telekon" as Bowie's "Five Years" and "Aladdin Sane" (respectively)? I'm tickled. "I see a policeman smiling and waving and looking so fine..." "My dog runs AWOL to Paris or maybe hell..." Tubeway Army resembling the Cure and Joy Division? God... imagine Gary, Fat Bob Smith, and Bernard Sumner in a karaoke bar, belting out "Ziggy Stardust"... :-) Bowie wouldn't care, it'd just make more collateral to feed into his Bowie bonds... The newspaper article reprints are interesting - like the top ten listing. O, for the halcyon days when Numan, Iggy, and Ian Dury topped the charts! I do think that Gary's comment "I think it's a very English thing to make heroes" quite obviously lacks the point that it's also very English (press-wise, anyway) to rip those heroes down with appalling cruelty.
