I asked (in #449), did the Numa Years Box Set indicate Eagle's and Cleopatra's true intentions. The inference was, of course, that they were more interested in cashing in on= existing recordings rather than investing in new music. At first, I didn't mention Cleopatra as I knew that they had nothing to d= o with the UK release. However, on rereading the text, I remembered that so= me US fans had mentioned the Box Set and I therefore assumed (wrongly) that = it had been released in the States by Cleopatra. So I added Cleopatra. Just goes to show, "if you assume, you make an ass of you and me". Rod, I'm sorry! I look forward to the US releases of the Numa albums. @@@@@ Didn't realise Erik Satie was a Rosecrucian. But then of course, you're n= ot supposed to know are you? To: "Digest Numan" Fellow Numanites, Bit of a mystery here. Maybe some enterprising Digesters and trivia barons can help me out here. I must alert you to the fact that I may be losing my mind in a labyrinth of my own making ... but anyway (sigh) here goes: The time: 21:30 (Moscow) Tuesday 14th. July The place: our Betacam edit suite The subject: Numan music in a movie ... ? I was editing all night, so during a coffee break I popped into my office and while I was coincidentally e-mailing a fellow digester about picking up some Numan CD's for him in London, I distinctly heard from the TV set, a section of the intro to "The Angel Wars" (beginning 10 seconds into the track to be precise) and I looked up to see a bad quality cheesy American martial arts flick which was overdubbed with a Russian voice. Gobsmacked I watched a sequence showing the bad guy, a steroid junkie Dolph Lundgren type, working out in preparation for his upcoming fight, intercut with the hero (I assume) an American-Chinese Bruce Lee clone (Simon Rhee?) doing his warm-ups to a different piece of music. Every time they cut to the bad guy they played the intro from "The Angel Wars". I slammed in a VHS tape and just caught the last of this sequence. I replayed to make sure I was not hallucinating. No mention of the music on the credits. I checked the Russian TV guide, which roughly translated the title as "The Best Of The Best" which I think is quite a dated old American kung-fu flick, much older I assume than the creation of "Exile". So there are 3 possibilities: 1. Gary pinched the music from the film (unlikely) for "The Angel Wars". 2. The film has been re-edited (possibly only for Russia but I doubt it, since Russians just simply pirate everything they can and sell it at the markets, and most films are simply overdubbed with Russian voices) and the producers have used Numan's music without permission and have not credited Gary for this - i.e. a copyright violation. (Take'em to the cleaners Tony Webb!) 3. I am going insane. If there are any nice fans out there with time on their hands, a bizarre sense of curiosity and access to a copy of this movie, could they please confirm this. I am really curious, maybe this could result in a court case? Numan vs. Cheesy Karate Killers? I await confirmation of either (a) my insanity or (b) my astute observational skills. (Probably more, I just haven't thought about it that much....) 1. Technology as sexy. (Sorry, this I just don't get.) There are a lot of people out there who take better care of their computers then they take care of their children or their significant others. The standard cyborg-babe ideal. (I usully think of it as one of the following, depending on the song....) 2. Techno-Erotica as a symbol/ metaphor for the seperation of people from each other. There's a physical closeness, and the person knows it. e.g. "Bleed", "me! i disconnect from you", "Cars", "Play Like God", etc. 3. Erotic as erotic, intimacy as intimacy, regardless of sex/gender, etc. In G.N.'s music, I've always gotten (in the whole month or so I've been a Numanoid) a feeling of a wounded romantic seeking sollace in another person, another human being who is more than a "car" or more than a mere "service". The person seeks it, not another's penis, not another's vagina; the other person, not their sex.... A closeness, an intimacy that goes beyond physicality and standard social roles. e.g. "Absolution", "You Walk In My Soul", "Magic", etc. Depending on how you look at it, #2 and #3 could just be different sides of the same coin.... (Maybe I have thought about this too much...?) If you really think you and your daughter need help, there are usually support groups or services for families in any major city. But I suspect you were half-kidding when you asked, and maybe you don't really need one. You've taken a step into your daughter's world, in an effort to reach out to her. Let me encourage you to take another. Your daughter listens to Gary Numan's music becuase it's meaningful to her and brings her happiness. She's probably visiting the websites for the same reasons. Aren't those good things? If you want to connect with her, try asking her to pick out just a few of his songs that she thinks you might like and have her play them for you. Ask her what those songs mean to her. Then ask her what she gets out of visiting the websites and talking to other fans. In all honesty, she'll probably be thrilled that you're asking, and be only too glad to share with you. It can be an opportunity for you to connect in a way that you'll both find satisfying. I first started listening to Gary Numan's music when I was twelve years old, and throughout my teen years I never found another person who enjoyed his music. I would have jumped at the chance to share my enjoyment of it with a friend or loved one, and would have been delighted (and shocked) if my parents had had anything to say about it other than "Turn down that awful noise!" I suspect your daughter might react similarly. And if you're really looking for a source of support, you may have already come to the right place. The Digest is a place where people come together out of love of Gary's music; in a way, it's a supportive environment for us. We offer each other comraderie and fellowship-- we'd certainly be able to offer it to you and your daughter! In any case, love and well-wishes to you both. There is lot of reviews about Numan, so just look if have a time http://www.qonline.co.uk/_reviews/database.htm maybe someone collected it, take care! --= Gary Numan Exile Following improbably hip tribute album, Random, and declarations of lifelong Numania from Beck, The Prodigy and Marilyn Manson, Exile could have embarrassed a freshly furbished legend. However, the old android has produced a concept album, no less, on God, Satan and The Fall (perhaps theologically spun off from Milton's Paradise Lost). That small, nasal drone of a voice ponders faith and divine vengeance with a weird tranquillity (no dramatics when he intones "I don't believe in the cross on the hill" or "The body of Christ is as black as his soul"). Relentless rather than monotonous, with its rattling drum sequences, groaning synthesized cello ambiences and distorted guitars, Exile bears a coherent authority perhaps reflecting Numan's new-found sense of status as muso uncle to an electronic generation. I have only seen excerpts on this, but it does seem very clear to me, after having met Gemma, that Gary is very much a heterosexual. This is a quote from the liner notes in the "Replicas" reissue CD (which states that it is from the autobiography): "Replicas is filled with images of decay, seediness, drug addicts, fragile people and the abandonment of morals. The bisexual allusions are partly based on encounters I had with gay men, who had attempted to persuade me to try things. I was never interested in gay sex, never felt the slightest bit tempted, but the seediness of those situations left an impression which I used in Replicas" I hope this helps end the debate. On another note, homo-erotic fantasy is common even in straight men, as anyone who has even taken an introductory psychology class, and read ahead in their books, will know that studies have shown that nearly 85 to 95% of all males have had some sort of "homosexual" encounter, although they won't admit it in public, or even to their best friends for fear of discovery, or labling. But makeup, clothes, and certain mannerisms certainly do not indicate a sexual preference or inclination. It is only so to those who are fearful and ignorant of their sexual role in society, those who are desperately in need of clarification and clear identity markers if you will. Again, a person's sexuality should not be the focus of that individual, but a part of who they are, unless they want to make it so. Anyway, those are my thoughts on the subject. When youre 12 or 13 and queer, you NEED to validate yourself, and Numan's early songs (some of them) do contain lyrics that excited me (particulalrly the bit about the driver wanting to touch him, and him not being able to pull away, but did he really want to...) Straight people dont need to come out, or validate their sexual feelings, so I guess that they wouldnt care, but for us gay boys it was cool, and exciting to hear homoerotic lyrics !! > How about - 'Queenie; From a doorway says, "You got time?" > How is _that_ homosexual? It's interesting though that when gay people say how positive an effect on their lives Gary's early lyrics made that straight people should jump up and down and basically shout "He's NOT a poof!" even though noone said he was !! If youre not interested in anyone's sex life, then there's no need for YOU to go on about it either.
