Well, I've been getting the digest for a few weeks now, and have finally come to the conclusion that I need to rouse my lazy…ummm, fingers, and submit my little introduction. I've only been listening to Gary Numan for, oh, less than two months--but hey, I've relinquished my hold on almost $75 for Numan alone! (Which is, for one artist, and over the course of about one month, a lot of $ for me!) Anyway, I like a variety of music, but mostly Industrial/Goth/80s-ish stuff (I won't bore you with a list). This coming fall I'll be a high school senior (awww yea) at the same school (in the Bay Area, CA) as the illustrious Riana Pfefferkorn, who, incidentally, is the very devilish soul who lured me into the strange and wonderful world of Numan. On to an actual topic in the digest… I just got the Beggars Banquet reissue of Replicas, which is excellent. And in reading the liner notes by Steve Malins I ran across this a quote from his autobiography, Praying to the Aliens: "Replicas is filled with images of decay, seediness, drug addicts, fragile people and the abandonment of morals. The bisexual allusions are partly based on encounters I had with gay men, most of whom were much older than me, who had attempted to persuade me to try things. I was never interested in gay sex, never felt the slightest bit tempted, but the seediness of those situations left an impression which I used in Replicas." I apologize ahead of time if I kinda just missed something previously in the homoerotic "debate," making my addition, for lack of a better term, not applicable. Anyways, just thought it was interesting, considering the recent banter. Considering the obvious impact William Burroughs had on his lyrics, I'd say it was a definite theme. At the very least it means he had the 'nads to touch a subject that was either taboo or dealt with by very political or very raunchy performers at the time. I've outdone myself in merchandising recently--glommed Replicas, Tubeway Army, Telekon, and Pleasure Principle as soon as they hit my very sympathetic Local CD Shoppe... They special-ordered the boxed set for me at $67.95, causing me to cancel my Amazon.com order to encourage Local CD Shoppe to continue to stock Numania. (I was told they hadn't preordered it because the manager had thought, and I quote, "no-one would give a shit." I promised them I did.) It's been very busy hereabout, and I haven't had time to really listen to any of these CD's except Replicas, though I've played most on the boombox at work (sadly, my bosses turn down Gary Numan every time they pass the machine, causing me to have to cross the room to turn it up again), but the BB reissues sound **great,** especially the b-sides. That's a different version of "We Have A Technical" than the one released on The Plan EP & on the Asylum set, isn't it? It's one of my absolute favorite songs. The boxed set is gorgeus, but I hope we'll eventually see the original artwork in the individual reissues...? And lyrics, I miss lyrics. One of the things I've loved about Gary's work was that lyric sheets were included in all the albums. The volume difference between the album and the bonus tracks on Berserker *is* very noticeable, as Derek pointed out, and I'm rather annoyed by the substitution of the extended "Call Out the Dogs," and I'm not altogether certain the fifth CD in the pocket is a perfect and aethetic solution to getting all five in there, but as a looker it can't be beat. Lastly, yes, I **am** still working on that Numanoid Psychology article, and trying to pull together a relevent website. I'll keep y'all updated as I continue my glacial progress... zg Ziggy Blum Ziggy's House O' Vermin zigi@ravenland.com --------------------------- What I don't know about myself would fill terabytes. --G. I think Gary's music does have a lot of homoerotic content/influence, = which is not to jump to any conclusions about his own sexuality perse, but = it's clear that he's been influenced by a number of writers such as = Burroughs and Ballard whose writing include a number of homoerotic = references. Or it could just be that he may have some bisexual tendencies = which may or may not be expressed, If you believe in the kinsey scale as I = do, most people are a little bit bisexual to one degree or another. While I know some of you are miffed by people overly reading gay content = into his songs, I don't think it's necessary to overly "straighten out" = clearly homoerotic lyrics, either. A lot of the lyrics may be somewhat = ambiguous do to the fact that homosexuality is still not completely = acceptable and makes a number of people uncomfortable, and blatently = addressing it might cause some people to lose interest. = Now here's my question: If "Jo the waiter" was female, wouldn't it be "Jo = the waitress?" just a thought. I haven't heard anyone discuss the heavy homoerotic content of "Praying to = the Aliens" ("Now only boys who love only boys") or maybe I've just haven'= t been keeping up since I'm a newbie. Whilst I wouldn't suggest he's a bigot, I suspect his views on gays aren't entirely neutral. Kind of like the guy who says: "I'm not a racist, but...." Gary was once talking about Denis Haines, and how he discovered him kissi= ng one of the (male) roadies at Wembley. This was turned into a joke, in a w= ay that could never have happened if Denis was kissing a woman. Everyone els= e laughed, but I took my life in my hands and asked "There's nothing wrong with that is there?". To Gary's credit, he said "no" (and he didn't glare= at me either!). I'm on a mailing list for Crowded House fans. Neil Finn is currently touring the US/CANADA playing similar venues to Gary's recent tour (many of the same venues in fact). Fans from that list are arguing that the tour will loose thousands of dollars. I quote: "I doubt that, acts like Neil make so much money off of the incredibly overpriced merch that that alone can support a tour. Ill bet they clear $5k a night in merch, and that more than covers costs for an American club tour. Add to that the fee, which judging by the rooms hes playing is probably in the 8-12k range depending on capacity, and Id say he will come out way in the black. " and the rebuttal: "... Work out Neil's costs - 2 buses, 1 truck, airfares from Australia, wages, hotel etc, etc, a touring party of twenty. I manage bands and have done similar tours. I can assure you that Neil will be losing 6 figures on this tour.I've heard that they're not even doing Merch in the US as it would not have broken even. Venues in the US charge 25-35% commission - the artist still has to pay the wages, accom & transport for the seller." Now am I right in thinking that Gary's recent tour was a financial success? And the merchandising on the tour was a profitable proposition? Of course most of us were 'starved' for Numan memoriablia here so maybe we bought more than our normal share of tour items (I know I did!) The argument of course then shifts to whether touring is just a giant advertising expense for a band or if they can actually be profitable. So if any one has any comments/knowledge of whether the tour was a finanical success I'd appreciate it. I would hope then that it would be a good omen for Neil Finn's US tour. Thanks! Both Cleopatra and Gary himself (and I did talk to him about this while he was here in LA) are VERY concerned about the fact that the average store's "Gary Numan" department has gone from three or four cds to 12 -15 in about six months. Cleopatra is very aware of the Beggars Banquet re-issues (which I think are stellar) and the new albums and remix albums and tribute albums, plus the box set (if anyone can find one), so is pacing the re-release of the Numa material. We know that most stores are unwilling to carry a dozen or so new releases by any one artist, and that no one beyond the casual fan is going to buy ALL of them, especially all at once. Gary is competing with himself! So Cleopatra is releasing their titles slowly. Remodulate (new 2cd compilation) should be out in a month or less, then Sacrifice, Dark Noise and then the Fury in a couple months. Later this year, also dependent upon how well Sacrifice and The Fury sell, they will be putting out the other titles (Berserker, Strange Charm, etc).
