I'd like to know who originally shot = it, and if they have the complete shows elsewhere. I'd like to get the = complete shows where this video comes from, if they're available. It's very much a "bits and pieces" video from the Irving Plaza (New = York) and Lee's Palace (Toronto) shows. I had absolutely no idea that 'Human' actually was the score to a movie, for all that it had always sounded like one to my ears. I have just finished watching 'The Unborn.' A horrific movie-- and a caution for anyone faint of heart-- but a sheer delight for its score! I adore the 'Human' album. I love instrumental music; I think it has qualities that "songs" just cannot reach. I actually think 'Human' is one of Gary's better albums: more coherent, more evocative, more stirring, more... musical! So watching the film for which the music was created-- after becoming well-acquainted with the album in its own right-- made it seem almost like a long-form music video. Loving Gary's music like I do, it's always seemed to me that his artistry would lend itself brilliantly to film score. It's been a dream of mine that his talent would be used in this way. A second Gary dream come true for me! Someone else wrote in to the Digest some time ago asking what songs used some of the musical themes from the 'Human' album that Gary hints at. To name a few, the rhythm track for "From Russia Infected" was used in several of the 'Human' tracks, "Interval 1" is lifted almost note-for-note from the album, and "Love Isolation" contains at least one reference. Can I digress for a moment to say I love soundtrack albums in general? One of my favorites is 'Escape From New York' which is scored by that film's director, John Carpenter. Does anyone else have this? If you haven't seen this film, I suggest you rent it and give it a watch; the music is pure electronics, quite dark and moody, and sounds like a pure homage to Gary. In fact, I have the soundtrack recorded onto the back of my taped copy of 'Sacrifice'. (I tape all of my cds, so I can play them here in my car.) What's more, I have a collection of Carpenter themes on the flip of my taped copy of 'Exile.' His music fits that well. IMO. Love to all, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley P.S. Can you believe I actually e-mailed The Man himself some time ago through the NuWorld site to suggest he try his hand at composing a film score? Not unlike the time I suggested "The Skin Game" would have made a good single. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Jul 1998 16:56:07 PDT From: "William Wilson" Subject: Beggars reissues To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi! all, Last digest didn't seem to have one of my postings so I presume that it has gone astray, apologies if this duplicates it but the gist of it was about the Beggars reissues and in particular "Telekon". The few points were 1,What happened to the Viola track and one of the"ARP" tracks on "Remember I Was Vapour",they are completely missing(the same goes for"Joy Circuit",but I haven't identified exactly the instruments missing yet) 2,How can Beggars(UK end)get the lyrics WRONG!!!!,I mean, isn't it "I'm still frighten'd'd by the telephone" not "running from" as the booklet says for "I Die:You Die" 3,As in no.2,on "We Are Glass" they include "Live" lyrics...WHY!!!,and even these are wrong,to my ears anyway.I was always positive that he sung"And I know I,and I know you,are never ever goin' to go,We are glass"(I think the lyrics come from the "Living Ornaments'80" live set On the subject of the "Telekon" remaster,I notice a BIG!!! difference on "I Die:You Die" but taking point 1 into consideration I can't decide whether this is down solely to the "Remastering" or it really is the "Alternative" version(for anyone with a Hi-fi that boosts bass, adds effects(like LIVE,DISCO,HALL,MOVIE ect),take all these off and listen to the CD that way,you get a better feel of the remastering...HONEST!!) Now whilst I realise it is completely in his interest to put out a product that the fans will buy I still feel his actions in this area are commendable. Seems to me that Cleopatra are doing a stand up job. Let's face it, Gary wasn't exactly falling over offers before Cleopatra stepped in. I find the very amusing Blotto story hard to believe as much as I would like to. I find it hard to imagine Gary punching his way out of a paper bag. I mean love him as much as we do, Rambo he ain't. Great story anyway. If anyone can confirm it I would love to be proved wrong. If he's that hard these days maybe a crack at Joe Bugners current title would be a good career move. I am so P****d-Off. I have been trying for years to get a copy of "Don't be a Dummy" without success (I guess I didn't try too hard). Anyway I was coping some CD's off to Mini-Disc the other night including some tracks from the Beggars re-released double set that came out about four years ago. I was recording the live version of Remember I was Vapour. When the song ended I noticed that there was still a minute to run on the track time. With 32 seconds to go guess what kicks in, You guessed it. How stupid am I? Was I the only person on earth to not know this was tagged on to the end of the album (Telekon I think)? I have had these CD's since their release but confess to not having played them all the way through.Sneaky move though putting it there without a credit. I could kick myself. This is the first time I've seen it in a store...most of the ones i've visited don't have the slightest clue... Random thoughts about the Dawn CD - I'm glad to have the short version of Sacrifice on CD, I didn't have it before...the CD booklet is nicely done, but it's missing the lyrics for "Magic"...anyone else notice this? Is there a reason for this? Ran out of gorgeous babe pics perhaps? I find it weird to have a Numan CD with graphics done by someone else...i guess it's just me. Just thought i'd pass the info on for anyone who's interested. If you don't live in the SF Bay Area and would like address or phone info...send me a private email and I'll gladly send it to you. In response to a number of requests here is the track listing for my Remodulate compilation, which was due to be released on Cleopatra August 4th but is unlikely to be out before mid-September. I'll post as soon as I have the definitive date. Dark Light and Sacrifice will be out in August as planned. Disc one: The Numa Years My Breathing Your Fascination (extended) A Question of Faith The Secret (extended) Call Out the Dogs Love and Napalm Cold Warning (extended) Bleed Berserker (7" edit) I Wonder New Thing from London Town (12" version) My Dying Machine (Italian 12" remix) Disc two: Live Chronicles Stormtrooper in Drag The Dream Police Everyday I Die Listen to the Sirens Metal Down in the Park Are Friends Electric I Die You Die We Are Glass The Iceman Comes Cars Me I Disconnect from You We Are So Fragile Jo the Waiter (not waitress;0) The Machman The live tracks are from the albums White Noise, Dark Light, Ghost and Dream Corrosion I must tell you this was by far the hardest piece of work I have ever done. It took months to make the selections, do the programming, arrange the bonus tracks, do the artwork, figure out the lyrics and get it all DONE. I could still tinker with several things (they practically had to rip the discs out of my hands), and now that the box set is out I would definitely switch a few tracks. But what's done is done. I have listened to demo (cd-r) versions of these two discs to the point that I cannot bear to listen to anything even resembling them for awhile. But I think the track listing is strong and I hope will appeal to 'lost' Numan fans and lookie-loos as well as die hards like ourselves. I have played disc one a couple times in a record store here in LA to get reactions and most of it has been positive. (most of it). (plus a lot of curiosity). There are hopefully two very good reasons for everyone on this list to buy this cd if for none other than the heretofore 'unreleased on cd' bonus tracks. I know that I can't please everyone so respectfully submit the album as it is and hope YOU like it. (if it EVER gets out!!) Some of the tracks were remastered because the sound quality differed noticably among Numa releases. Listen to Dark Light and then put on Dream Corrosion for an example of what I'm dealing with. To be honest both cds have been tinkered with so much (the live disc has been 'mixed' so the breaks between songs are not (as) noticable) that I can't even tell you which ones have been changed and which ones haven't... pretty much everything on the album has been filtered or mixed or remastered in some form. All I hope is that it sounds good to YOU which is an extremely hard thing to ascertain from where I sit (even with headphones on). While I'm on the soap box, I would like to thank all those who wrote to me with their track suggestions (the're not ALL on there as cds can only hold so much!!) and helped with the NTFLT lyrics (*that* was a piece of work) especially Derek who went above and beyond. Everyone who's seen the advance copies of the artwork seemed to think it was interesting and I look forward to seeing the album finally in stores and hearing comments and feedback.
