However, I feel I have to speak to the really vicious comments that appeared in this last digest. I want to ask my straight brothers, why does it bother you that we queers want to talk about our connection to Gary's lyrics? I and my queer sisters and brothers have posted comments describing our happiness at encountering homoeroticism in his songs; why is that an objectionable thing? Why does that threaten you? I haven't noticed any queer people arguing that they thought Gary really was gay; I have noticed a number of others "defending" his heterosexuality. Can I point out that it was never under attack? I believe Gary when he says he's happy with Gemma, and I bless their relationship. You say you're happy in your straightness, and I say good on that, too. Why can't you celebrate our queerness and be happy with us who we are? A number of postings have suggested we just not talk about this issue, but why do you need us to remain silent? To draw you an analogy, I personally have about zero interest in the types of equipment Gary has used; but there are musicians who post about them on the digest, and if they enjoy the subject, then I'm glad they have this place to come together around it. For myself, I just skip over those segments. How is it you're unable to do the same? Why do you want us to refrain from a discussion that brings us joy and comradeship? I feel a love for all my fellow numanoids. And I feel a particular love for his queer fans, because that's my tribe-- and I'm proud of us. If we numanoids have created these cyberspaces for us all to come together to celebrate who we are and what brings us together, you can see how it's just the same for us queer fans. We too want to celebrate who we are and what brings us together. We'd love to have you share in our celebration, but if you choose not to, that's okay. But I wonder why you then need to not only refuse to join in, but to destroy it for others? Let me ask you, if your words were intended to hurt, why do you feel the need to hurt anyone? And if they weren't so intended, do you think you've expressed them in a way that would avoid hurting others? I'd like to invite all my fellow numanoids to put aside their hostility and be open to really listening to what we queers have to say. We are his fans, too. He invited us in; those lyrics were not mistakes-- he meant them to be there. I don't mind controversy and debate-- believe me, I can debate with the best-- but I enjoy it much more when it's done with intelligence and compassion. As Gary fans, we all know what it is to stand alone and have others misunderstand or reject us. We certainly don't need to treat each other that way. There's room in here for us all. According to a friend of mine who's heavily into various types of metal music, 'Cars' wasn't allowed to be included on Obsolete for various reasons that I don't remember... I'll ask him about it next time I talk to him and let everyone know if I remember to. I did read at the All Music Guide (http://www.allmusic.com) that Gary does a nifty little spoken word type part on the title track though. I'll let everyone know what I think of it when I hear it, since the above mentioned friend said he's going to buy their new cd after he picks up a few other recent metal releases. --- | 'stick your fingers in my mouth. pull my lips back and watch me | smile.' - pavement -- http://www.portup.com/~koskib -- aim: PavedOne ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Aug 1998 05:12:14 EDT From: NewcombG3@aol.com Subject: Foiling the fool who keeps posting last week's digest To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Here's a tip to quickly pass by last week's digest. Sometimes we talk about how much publicity Numan got, or didn't get prior to his trip thru the US this year. Well, I am finding that must be common among other artists as well. Just found out that Human League and Howard Jones are going to be here in Indianapolis in less than two weeks, and there has been almost NO mention of this locally. Seems these two acts are opening for Boy George. Almost like an '80s fest. Wish it were just Human League in a much smaller venue, but all three will be playing a show in Market Square Arena, which seats about 25,000. Well, on to more Numan stuff. Just as a matter of curiosity, who would rather see Numan come back thru the States again, on a similar tour to what he did a few months back, or as a opening act for someone else, in a bigger venue? The smaller shows are more intamate, and great for fans, but larger shows may be a chance for more exposure. Post back with what you think. Yes, you are right. Half-right, anyway. I merely point out that there are more than one way of interpreting a particular peice of literature(or song). I probably wouldn't have responded as I did if it weren't for homo-centric views put forth by others on the list. But to each his or her own. Mark P ("Homo-Yawn"): well, done. I agree 100% with you. Though I agree, that probably for the next ten (or more) digests there will be a discussion about your mail and political correctness or so, I bet ... yawn, *stretch*, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.., *snooze* Back to more interesting stuff: Derek, you wrote, that if someone had the "Numa Years" box set, he'd have all the tracks included in the Receiver Recds. 3-cd-box-set "The Story So Far". I bought it recently and (with one exception) am quite happy. The cds have a very good sound quality, as far as my ears are concerned. - Time To Die: In my opinion nice live recordings and I couldn't figure out yet, where they are from (I have "Ghost", "Dream Corrosion", "Dark Light" and "White Noise") - maybe someone's got a hint? - My Dying Machine: I think, the best of the 3 cds, as it contains versions I didn't have before. The tracks "Berserker", "My Dying Machine" and "Call Out The Dogs" are totally different from the ones included on the box set! (Just compare the length of "My Dying Machine": more than 10 mins vs. about 7!) So I for my part, am absolutely glad I purchased the Receiver box. Au contraire, I was very disappointed, when I received the US-version of Exile, since I hoped to get a live version of "DITP" recorded lately. But after listening for less than a minute, I realized that it was the one from "Ghost" from 1989. Boy, was I mad. Why wasn't Cleo so fair and stated that clearly visible on the cover (it would have been sufficient to include the date)? As for the last cd of the Receiver box: - Live - The Sleeproom: That is (I agree) total s***. The title is incorrect and the tracks well known. Just one more point regarding the reissues: I think it's a pity that Eagle and Cleo walk in different directions. Why couldn't they just publish editions that are similar? So I have bought the box set, and I will also buy Cleo's re-releases, just to have the chance to get my hands on the original artwork of the albums. Why not release them like they were originally released simultaneously in Europe and elsewhere and - in addition - one or two new cds with previously (on cd) unreleased material? Just thinking.
