My personal opinion here, the warriors album may have gotten derision for its cover art direction was in my opnion one of Gary's best works. The uncredited porduction and credited guitar work by Bill Nelson is fantastic, for those that don't have this album it is worth tracking down. Let's hope that the recent re-issue of the first 4 Numan Beggars Banquet CD's leads to re- releasing the other titles in the BB inventory. My experience with cd-r's has been very different than NewcombG3@aol.com's. I use mine in my car, at home on three different players and have used them in many other stereos as well, from nice ones to crappy little boom boxes. I would guess that this person's problems arise not from the players, but the cd-r unit and/or the software that they are using. A sub par unit will not produce predictable results, and some of the software out there isn't as good as it should be. An excellent resource is this FAQ, http://www.cd-info.com/CDIC/Technology/CD-R/FAQ.html I have the Ricoh 1420-C and use Digidesign's Masterlist, which is a truly excellent program, but a little pricey. Adaptec's Jam has come down on price alot lately and is also a good program. (these are Mac programs, I couldn't even tell you people burdened with a PC what to use) That clap sound used so well on Pleasure Priciple is the Simmons Clap Trap, it did one thing, and it did it well. There, that was a Numan reference. Don't skip it! Essential album for all Numan collections. Also, Moral is a parallel song to Metal in terms of the chord progression and tune, but it is also completely different and a great song by itself. I think comparing the two and mixing the lyrics ultimately diminishes them both. It's tempting to think of the two songs as some kind of bookends to something, and maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think Gary was really saying anything about the song Metal by recycling elements from it in Moral. It's just a good tune, so he used it again! Gary often recycles his own musical ideas, and I sometimes wish he wouldn't, like the doppler tones which were perfect at the beginning of Slowcar to China, but have become a Numan cliche now. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 00:43:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Hansi Slanec Subject: Discovered Numan Cover To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi Digesters, at Virgin Megastore Vienna i found a numan cover (Are 'friends' electric?) by a band called "Replicants" Anyone who knew this cover? This is a catastrophe, the extended Dominion Day promised so much for this album, fans have come to expect extended releases from Gary, and this is mne of Gary's most acclaimed albums, and Eagle are NOT, repeat, NOT going to issue the extended version? Aaarrgh! So much for bigger labels. This is another disappointment to add to the list - Dominion Day fiasco, mistakes with the Boxed Set, now this. How do we change Eagle's minds? I can't remember why he said he didn't like him but he more or less said that he couldn't stand the man. This interview was circa '79/'80. On a Radio one show where stars did their top ten songs. I wish I could remember some more of the top ten that he did that day. Another person that Gary laid into in this interview was Bob Geldof, apparntly sir bob slagged off the touring princicple light show saying that it was a rip-off of the boomtown rats light show, the rats was a huge Tic-Tac-Toe on stage. It was pretty cool. I reckon that Bob was jealous that everyone made a big deal of the numan light show and the boomtown rats light show was never really mentioned. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hey Dick, The Blotto story was funny. I howled when I read it. As for the other matter, I wouldn't sweat it mate, there's always some pathetic PC tosser weasel who's going to throw a hissy fit at something that get's written. You hang in there man!!!!!!!! Me, I'm past caring about trying to pacify these sad gits. I'm sure Gary would be horrified if he knew how "Serious" some of his fan base had become. When it get's to the stage where people start to take comments about Gary personally you know they've lost it. There's a fine line between fanatasism and obsesion. I participate in a similar arena associated with the 70's band Sweet. It's the same deal there too. It seems that some people feel they have to become custodians for the well being of the artist. It's kinda like (In a butch voice) " If you say anything bad against Gary (Or whom ever) you'll have me to deal with". I hate these people, they take all the fun out of being a fan. Funnily enough it generally seems to be the younger ones too. Beats the hell outta me !!!!!! Never mind, they'll get over it. Me, I'm 36 and have been a Gary fan for 20 years. I've voted with my ££££££'s buying his records and with my feet at his many gigs over the years. I've even spent 3 years playing in a dedicated Numan tribute band called Young Things Don't Scream. So actually, I don't feel I need to justify my dedication to anyone. That said I am quite happy to speak my mind if I feel Gary or his organisation (Such as it is) does something I don't agree with. Doing that seems to be regarded as an act of high treason or the ultimate betrayal by some. Incidentally someone raised the topic of Gary's family involvement in the running of his affairs. This is probably only Gary's business but here's my opinion anyway for what it's worth. I personally thought that thru the 70's & early 80's it was kinda nice having Mum and Dad involved. I think they were instrumental in creating an environment whereby the fans felt as if they were part of a family. Unfortunately the music biz is a minefield of all kinds of nastiness and you either play and use it or ultimately go under. To work the system to it's fullest you need the help of the professional low life snakes that perpetuate that system. They alone know what it takes to survive in that environment. Mum and Dad however don't. I can't help feeling that if Gary is SERIOUS about wanting another REAL shot he has to retire Mum and Dad to the Algarve for a well earned retirement and get a SERIOUS management team behind him who can pull the right strings and be emotionally detached enough to not be afraid of upsetting their Son when the truth needs to be told. Gary has, in many ways, been cocooned from the realities of the biz by the fact he has involved his family in the running of his affairs. I cannot help feeling that his LONG TERM career prospects would be greatly improved by changing this situation. No disrespect Tony and Beryl, you were great to me in 87 regarding the YTDS covers album, I actually still keep your letters framed in my office, but I feel Gary has a huge hill to climb if he want's street & chart credibility again. People just think of him as the blonde moody guy that crashes planes and had a couple of hits that all sounded the same. Us who follow him know differently of course but changing public opinion is no small feat and Gary may have to be told things he doesn't want to hear from time to time. Who's going to lay that on the line, Tony or Beryl? I think not. Luv on Y'all, Axeman. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Aug 1998 20:38:55 EDT From: AScand7463@aol.com Subject: Malcolm McLaren To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I heard Malcolm tell that story on the Jo Whiley show. It was Afrika Bambaataa who Malcy was talking about. I think he said something along the lines of, 'I couldn't believe all these guys were taking a record like 'the cars' by Gary Numan and mixing it with James Brown and it all sounded so wonderful' Gary was an influence on Electro in the 80's, which was where hip-hop started. Many old skool hip-hop dj's have the Pleasure Principle on vinyl. 'Films' has been sampled loads of times, that drumline is a classic breakbeat. I've heard DJ's use that song in clubs (for I am guilty of liking hip hop quite a lot), and the main synthline from 'Conversation'. The Dominion Day review must have been written by some dickhead who wouldn't know good music if it came up and bit them on the arse! But to make things better for anybody who reads a bad Numan review in the music press... just look at the crap that gets good reviews and thank whatever god you may or may not believe in that at least Numan isn't in the same category as shite like Ocean Colour Scene... because becoming a 60's wannabe is the only way to get a good review in the British music press these days. Remember: New Thing From London Town was Single of the Week in Smash Hits when it came out... do you want Numan to release another one like that? In my experience, a good review usually equals a bad song. Not always - just usually. Gary says so in his autobiography that the name Jo (like JoAnne, Josephine, etc.) refers to a certain waitress. This makes sense to me because, more often than not, the masculine name is spelled Joe. Why did she hold him close behind the door marked 'gentlemen?' It could be that she was not the shy, demure type. She saw him walk into the gentlemen's toilet, followed him, locked the door behind her. Why waiter and not waitress? Jo The Waitress doesn't have the same punch as Jo The Waiter. Besides being an in-the-closet/out-of-the closet homosexual, Gary could just as easily have been thought a drug addict, with heroine being his drug of choice, if one were to read too far into certain of his lyrics (Jo The Waiter and You Are In My Vision come immediately to mind). Why hasn't everyone discussed the hell out of THAT one?! A friend of mine said that he got into LSD as a teenager through a certain homosexual acidhead guru type, who used Numan's "acid casualty" images, music and lyrics as the ultimate articulation of his own existential homoerotic/psychedelic world view. This same person was naturally quite surprised to find out that Gary Numan is neither a Sandoz king nor queen. So it's doubtful if Gary participates in Gay Freedom marches (or, for that matter, hops on his trusty two-wheeler on Bicycle Day). At least about touring. I think you will find the 'no more touring' idea comes from a source othe= r than Tony or Beryl. In fact, I suspect it's a direct result of Gary takin= g advice from elsewhere - from a 'professional' source. Gary's been doing annual tours on or off since 1983 and in terms of INCREASED popularity, they've done absolutely nothing for him. Far, far more important is the occasional TV appearance, kind words from NME, etc,= sad as that is to admit. I think stopping the annual, predictable tour is the best idea to come ou= t in ages. I follow each tour around the UK (to a degree), and I see the la= ck of excitement in a large number of fans. I'm afraid we've reached the poi= nt in Gary's career where the hard core fans are no longer an asset but a liability (I'm thinking particularly of the pipe and slippers brigade, bu= t I think it applies to all of us to a greater or lesser degree). That's right! You and I Sean, and all the other long term UK fans are liabilities! The last good thing we did was re-juvenate Gary by cheering his 1993 tour loudly. It reminded him that he had talent and had made vit= al music. However, since then, what would have changed if we hadn't been around? I think Random would still have happened & the lager commercial. The US tour would have happened. Afrika Bambaataa, Marilyn Manson, Beck, Trent Reznor - all these people would still have said publicly how good Gary was. However there wouldn't have been this stigma hanging around of loony, sad Numanoids. Now I think Gary is eternally greatful to you and the rest of us for supporting him through the desperate hours, but he DOES want to be big again. He wants to be recognised as a great artist. He wants to go down i= n the history books. There is a small glimpse of that happening, but it wil= l only happen if Gary can attract new, young and COOL fans. Old Numanoids don't fall into that catagory I'm afraid Gary has made a bold move by giving up the safe for the risky. It's make = or break time. He should be applauded for that. Let's not say: "but what abo= ut us Gary? What about us?". Brilliant , witty and obviously well beyond my abilities. Joey is of course dead right about the Hardback , Paperback PTTA. I have never known of a succesful book which has not followed this route. (Double negative , I know!). However , as a Numanoid I have grown accustomed to purchasing everything as it appears , as you can never tell when it will disappear from sight. A cleft stick which we will just have to put up with. Does anyone know the hardback sales figures? As for Eagle , well it's all getting a little worrying from where I stand. IRS did at least chart with their offerings. And I think it is lunacy to undertake another LOSS MAKING tour of any sort with the relatively poor sales that Numan can command. Is this << no more UK tours >> thing true? Deja Vu from 1981!! The UK tours were turning in a profit. (or so Gary said in PTTA). But as for Numa still being viable , let's get real!! I think his work is superb. (Hell , I own all of it , most in three formats). I really hope that he rakes in enough to make this last gasp worth the effort , but that is all it is , a last gasp. He is now 40. And despite the 10 - 20 artists that have gone beyond that limit , the music business is a young man's game. Basically because the customers are even younger. NONE of the teenagers in my social circle would give Bowie , Rolling Stones , Elton John any sort of hearing. And they are STILL famous. So Numan is completely off the menu. I will buy everything he does. But I don't expect many others to follow. Glenn. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Aug 1998 22:30:28 +1000 From: "E. Bunce" Subject: What - No Oz Tour? Then he says: What does everyone else think? Well, I think that you have absolutely no idea what it means to be in the music business, no idea what is going on in his life, and are in no position to have an opinion about most of the things you are complaining about. This is not to say that I have any great insight into his life or business decisions either. I can guess some of his reasons for doing what he does or making the decisions he has made: Gimme more updates on your web site, devote your time to the WWW site or don't have one at all. I deserve more service from you. Other bands do, you should too. The web site probably isn't as important to him as it is to you. Face it, the WWW is just one big sell to a bunch of hop-on-the-bandwagon consumers. At this point, a presense is a "good thing to do this week" but it really doesn't make much money. If he doesn't have time to do stuff, the web is probably the first thing on the list to get neglected. This is ESPECIALLY true if he knows that the fan sites will pick up news items and he links to them. You said you were going to tour more, now you aren't. We have absolutely no knowledge of why the tours were cancelled. It could be that they money folks pulled the plug, it could be he is tired, it could be that someone has gotten extremely ill. Who knows? Not me, and certainly not you. In any case, he can't come out and publically say "well, the money folks pulled the plug, I'm not worth it to them to send me all over for 2 years." Publically he has to be more discreet. Did it ever occur to you that he doesn't owe you anything, not tours, not new albums, nothing. How come you can't tour and write a new album at the same time? Other bands do, you should too. And, duh, how come you are moving first it is stupid to move studios and get more stuff before you record an album. Well I don't give a rats ass if U2 wrote zooropa while on the road, that decision is Gary's and Gary's alone. This followed by a diatribe comparing database installation to moving a studio. You really have no clue what it takes to write an album or to move a studio. When you have a studio and are recording albums yourself, then I will listen to what you have to say about recording on the road and moving studios. Eagle records is out to make money on Gary and they already screwed up with the Dominion Day single. They should patch things up and release another single. Well, yes, they may have screwed up and no, they probably won't issue another single to patch things up. There is no such thing as a good deal on the artist side of the equation. I wouldn't want my mom and dad responsible for my career and publicity. Etc.. Just because you don't trust your parents when it comes to business, doesn't mean he can't or shouldn't. You can suppose and blame whomever you like for the state of career but you will NEVER know if you are right unless he tells you so. If Gary has chosen to have his parents involved in his career, that says a lot about how he trusts his parents. If he felt they weren't doing the job he wanted, he could certainly find someone else. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 20:15:43 +0100 From: "Gary Weir" Subject: What the hell is going on ? I have introduced friends to Numan mainly by taking them to live shows, I'm sure many other people have friends who think Numan's music is the most boring in the world, but take them to a concert and they are converted. So for there to be only one show this year in London, then if we are all lucky maybe a show or two closer to where you live next year is pathetic. Whilst I appreciate that fellow fans around the world may have to travel hundreds/thousands of miles it is the UK fan base that has kept him going. This is getting smaller all the time, and I'm sure after reading the newsletter it has done very little to improve (does anybody know how many fan club members ther are now?). To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I saw another version of Sacrifice yesterday at Aron's records in LA. It included bonus tracks. I haven't picked it up yet so I don't remember what they are. Does anyone know when this other Sacrifice became available? ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
