To: "Digest Numan" Citizens, I'm re-sending this request because I didn't receive any responses to it. Harrumph! Bit of a mystery here. Maybe some enterprising Digesters and trivia barons can help me out here. I must alert you to the fact that I may be losing my mind in a labyrinth of my own making ... but anyway (sigh) here goes: The time: 21:30 (Moscow) Tuesday 14th. July The place: our Betacam edit suite The subject: Numan music in a movie ... ? I was editing all night, so during a coffee break I popped into my office and while I was coincidentally e-mailing a fellow digester about picking up some Numan CD's for him in London, I distinctly heard from the TV set, a section of the intro to "The Angel Wars" (beginning 10 seconds into the track to be precise) and I looked up to see a bad quality cheesy American martial arts flick which was overdubbed with a Russian voice. Gobsmacked I watched a sequence showing the bad guy, a steroid junkie Dolph Lundgren type, working out in preparation for his upcoming fight, intercut with the hero (I assume) an American-Chinese Bruce Lee clone (Simon Rhee?) doing his warm-ups to a different piece of music. Every time they cut to the bad guy they played the intro from "The Angel Wars". I slammed in a VHS tape and just caught the last of this sequence. I replayed to make sure I was not hallucinating. No mention of the music on the credits. I checked the Russian TV guide, which roughly translated the title as "The Best Of The Best" which I think is quite a dated old American kung-fu flick, much older I assume than the creation of "Exile". So there are 3 possibilities: 1. Gary pinched the music from the film (unlikely) for "The Angel Wars". 2. The film has been re-edited (possibly only for Russia but I doubt it, since Russians just simply pirate everything they can and sell it at the markets, and most films are simply overdubbed with Russian voices) and the producers have used Numan's music without permission and have not credited Gary for this - i.e. a copyright violation. (Take'em to the cleaners Tony Webb!) 3. I am going insane. If there are any nice fans out there with time on their hands, a bizarre sense of curiosity and access to a copy of this movie, could they please confirm this. I am really curious, maybe this could result in a court case? Numan vs. Cheesy Karate Killers? I await confirmation of either (a) my insanity or (b) my astute observational skills. Gary: *strange untypeable noise* Greg: If you were stuck in a lift who would you most like to be stuck with Gary: *pause* Gemma. I only thought about it cos I couldn't think of anything more interesting Greg: Well you're married - you're allowed to say that Gary: Oh right. Greg: Whats the most embarrassing thing you've ever done on stage ? Gary: Umm. I've fallen over. Greg: What, flat on your face ? Gary: No, I fell on my arse actually. I went over a monitor cabinet. It was one of those moments when you've gone, and you know you've gone, but there are some moments before you hit the ground. It wasn't one of those quick ones when you go splat, it was oh shit, you've caught your foot and your going backwards and you know you're going over and there was all the time in the world to be embarrassed long before you even hit the ground. That was at Guildford, but I've been lucky. Greg Was it in front of a load of people ? Gary Oh yeah, right in the middle of the gig Greg Did they cheer ? Gary Yeah loads of stuff ! I've actually been very lucky on stage to be honest and considering the length of time I've been doing it there have been very very few really embarrassing things happen. I've been very lucky. Greg Whats the coolest thing about being a performer in your opinion ? Gary The coolest ? Walking into places and feeling a ripple go through it because people are aware of who you are. Walking on stage and hearing the whole place just rip itself apart. Much better than the money and all the .. everything. People would do it for that if there was no money whatsoever. I would. Greg Whats the best and worst thing about festivals ? Gary Well this is only the second festival I've ever been to so I'm far from being an expert and I guess I would see it from a band's point of view, not an audience point of view, so from my point of view the best thing about festivals is that you have access to such a huge amount of people that wouldn't normally come to see you which is almost priceless you know, and the worst thing about them is that you're exposed to such a huge amount of people that wouldn't normally come to see you, and might not like you very much !! Greg Do you ever get hostile reactions from crowds ? Gary Well I've only played at one, V96, and I had a really good time, and it was amazing and I loved it, but I still haven't lost my fear of them, and I need to do them. Next year I really need to get into festivals all across Europe and do as many as possible cos that really is the only way to move forward. Greg Do you still get nervous then when you go on stage ? Gary No not too much at my own gigs, but slightly yes. The one festival I did I just shat my pants completely, totally...Funnily enough I actually got calmer as it got nearer, but the weeks leading up to it I was just unbearable to be around. I was so frightened. But, it was brilliant. I've been out the front a bit here and it seems like a good atmosphere. It seems that if people aren't into you, rather than heckle you they just move back and mill around, but thats cool, and theres not all that can throwing and ... I remember reading stuff about Reading years ago when it was just frightening. God, I mean why would anyone do those things? But it seems much more musically, I dunno, people just seem to be much more into the general vibe of it being a musical day, rather than being there to give hard support to some people and hate somebody else which is a much much better environment I think to work in. Greg Who would you most like to kick out of a plane ? Gary Out of an aeroplane ? Greg Yeah, if you were flying over the Alps and the cargo doors open, who would you give that extra push to ? Gary Urm, Marc Almond Greg Any reason ? Gary He just said some stuff about me in the past...thats it really *laughs* Greg Good enough reason. Who were you in a previous life, and you're not allowed to say Cleopatra, cos everyone says that. Gary No I wasn't Cleopatra. In a previous life ? I dunno I think I was an assassin though. Dunno who. I was obviously a secret assassin Greg Are we talking Ninja or ? Gary Well, about 4 or 5 years ago something came on the television about a man who'd been shot and I said without any thought about it at all and it was an absolute clear memory to me, for a second I said "Yeah I've been shot once" - no doubt about it at all, and then I said "That was an absolute lie ! I've never been shot" So I wondered where that came from, so just for that moment, for that tiny spark there was no question about it. Well I wasn't an assassin, I was probably assassinated ! But assassin's sexier ! Greg If you could swap places with absolute anyone for a day who would it be ? Gary Oh thats a good one. Erm, Neil Armstrong. Greg The first person to step on the moon ? Gary Yeah. Not the moon bit actually, but the take off bit. The moon bit would be cool, but the take off and coming back, the tension of the whole thing. It'd have to be more than a day though or I wouldn't get them both in. Greg In a film of your life who would play you ? Gary Brad Pitt would play me obviously. Greg Would you juice it up or do it true to the book ? Gary I actually left out huge amounts of juice when I did the book cos I felt it was slightly unnecessary, and I felt it was slightly .. I thought it wasn't the right thing to do having been recently married and so on. And it would have upset Gemma and its not something I'm overly proud of anyway, but on the one hand the book should have had everything in it, and so I didn't lie in the book or juice anything up, but I did leave out a whole load of the gorier details of some of the things that went on out of respect for Gemma, and out of shame for me, but mainly respect for Gemma, I just thought it was in appropriate. It said enough to let people know that stuff went on, but didn't really have to go into every gory detail of it, which a lot of other books do, and I must be honest I do find it ever so interesting to read about ! *laughs* So I'm not sure it was the right thing or not in the big scheme of things, but I think for us as a couple it was the right thing to do yeah. So no, come a film I still wouldn't juice it up for the same reasons ! Greg When is your next album out and what is it called ? Well its gonna be out sometime around May. I don't have a title yet, cos I've not written the 1st note yet. I should have started it when I got back from the American Tour, but I decided to move my studio from where it is at the moment in the house to a building outside, and unfortunately , this is like a mowing my lawn boring story, but the builders took 2 months to arrive and they were supposed to take 2 days to arrive so I'm about 2 months behind with everything. So whereas by now I should have had a whole number of songs on the way I haven't done anything at all cos all my gear's pulled apart. Should be there in about a week though, 2 at the most, and its gonna be brilliant when its done, I'm really looking forward to it. Greg I've heard rumours that you might be working with Garbage or Prodigy or Marilyn Manson, or you have worked with Marilyn Manson Well he came on stage when I toured America - he came on stage and we did a song in Los Angeles. I'm a big fan of Garbage but theres no plans to work together, but I would be happy to. Same thing about Prodigy. There was a whole load of shit in the papers about me and Prodigy, which was really unfortunate cos it kinda buggered things up a little bit, but I'm meant to be meeting up with Liam some time this year, but theres no plans to work with him. I mean, we just live up the road from each other, thats all it was, it was just "Oh 'allo, I'm up the road you wanna come round", you know ? And I said that to someone in America and next thing you know we're co-writing an album together, and it just got blown out of proportion, so I daren't say anything anymore. I met Trent Reznor in America. I'm gonna send him some stuff, but again theres no firm plans for anything. I'm just going out and about, like this sort of thing, and I'm meeting a whole load of people, and some of them are kind of into what I've done in the past and and have said some nice things, and at the moment I seem to be much more credible than I have been in the past so people are talking about working with me, so when I start on the album Ill ring around some of these people and see if they meant it or not, and if they do then that would be brilliant and I'd be really up for it, and it would be very exciting for me, but because of what happened with The Prodigy thing, now I'm gonna talk about it when its done. Because you can just get so stuffed by saying slightly the wrong thing at slightly the wrong time, so we'll see. I hope there will be 2 or 3 interesting people on it when its done, cos I've never really done that before so I think it'll be good for my fans and be good for me because there are a number of people around now who I'm a big fan of that I really think I could learn from. You know it would be interesting to see how they work in a studio and how they put sounds together, and for me I just need to be constantly learning all the time, better ways or new ways of doing things Greg And finally, since you've been famous have you ever been tempted to phone up someone who dumped you in the past and laugh down the phone at them Gary Oh I did it. When I 1st got famous I went round to every old friend that had ever fucked me over or every girlfriend that had ever dumped me, and sometimes the girlfriends of the blokes who had fucked me over and just sorted everybody out in one way or another. I spent a week doing it. I got everyone. Everyone. Left a trail of carnage and disillusionment behind me. And I know it was pathetic, and I know it was extremely small-minded, and I do not give a fuck Know what I mean ? One of the best days of my life. Best weeks of my life. Revenge. You know they say that revenge is a very bad emotion. Its excellent. I have been lurking on this discussion group for about six months now. I have been into Numan music since 1979, and have collected most of his work on both record and CD. Like most fans I still have some gaps to fill. Particularly with obscure 12 inch mixes and picture disks (which I have quite a few anyway). I also grow and hybridize orchids as a hobby. Many of my new creations have been registered with numan-related names. So we now have orchids called "Berserker", "Warrior", "Strange Charm", "Telekon" etc. I would like to name a very dark orchid (it is almost black) after Gary, but I would need his permission for that. How can I get his O.K.? I sure hope he tours "Down Under" later this year as I would love to meet him. He has had a huge impact on me. I have a couple of questions/requests which I hope someone can shed light on. Firstly, where did the name "Telekon" come from and what does it mean and secondly, could someone provide the lyrics for the Numan/Sharpe version of "New Thing From London Town". I see from time to time people list their favourite tracks. s. This is so hard as there are so many great songs/versions to choose. Does anyone have a FULL LIST of what Gary Numan has recorded? I've got some bad news to relate: Effective on September 13, 1998, The Sleeproom website will be closing. Time constraints and my inability to really keep it up-to-date in terms of news and information have taken their toll. One can only rehash the same information so many different ways. Not that there's no new Numan-related information, mind you. I just never can get any of it online before someone else does. (Which seems to have given my site the appearance of being a "johnny-come-lately," when, in fact, the site's been around quite a while. 1999 would have been the third year of its lifespan.) If any interested Numan webmasters are interested in taking over the now-famous Numan Internet Fan Directory, you're more than welcome to do so. (Just let me know so I can link to you and give you the stamp of approval.) The site's content will remain online until October 1st. I will stay active on the Numanews list (well, as active as I've ever been) and will keep in touch with all the wonderful people I've met via the Numan web community. Special thanks to Matthew Holbrook (wherever you are), Joey Lindstrom, Tammy Botzum and the rest of the people I've met and chatted with over the years. It's been a lot of fun running the site, but I don't want to see it turn into a shadow of its former self. How many sites have you seen die out and become an online ghost-town, with an update every few months? Finding the Numan community on the 'net was one of the greatest things to happen in my life. I've still got an extra UK Telekon LP (as in vinyl) for sale or trade! I'm not looking for a million dollars here, but I was hoping some Numanoid (probably from the US) would make me an offer of some sort. The album is in great shape and includes the free live 7" single ("On Broadway" b/w "Remember I Was Vapour"). I presumed someone from the US might not have the UK vinyl as it differs slightly from the US vinyl. For those who might not know about the UK Telekon LP (BEGA 19), it has the track "Sleep By Windows" instead of "I Die: You Die". I'm not saying this is a collector's piece or anything, but both the LP and single are extras I recently picked up. I would entertain any offer or trade, if you've got one. The moment arrived this weekend. I have never laughed so much watching a video. How Numan got involved in this film is beyond me. With regards to the extended version of 'Exile'. A friend of mine regularly logs on to the Marillion site and recently purchased a CD there that was only available through the web site and fan club as a limited edition of 1000 copies. Surely with the work Numan has done on the extended version it would be in his interest to get it released, otherwise it has been a waste of his time. I know it probably isn't high on Eagles list but surely an artist such as Numan could persuade them to release in limited quantities through the fan club or web site. If done this way there wouldn't be any distribution or advertising costs to the label. Surely the profits from such a small number of pressings are better than none at all. To be honest I would rather Numan spend his time writing and releasing new songs than messing about extending them. But if the album has already been done then it may as well be released. I know that it has been some point of contention among members of this, regarding the rehashing and re-releasing of Numan's previous works. But here is the question at hand. The double CD sets that were released in '93, had many extra tracks per CD. There are also extra tracks showing up on the '98 re-releases as well, but not all the same. This leaves me with this to ponder. When and will we get those other tracks elsewhere, or will we have to buy this years re-release, as well as the '93, as well as the double length re-releases I already bought in '88 that went along with the Exibition double CD? Do you follow? I am torn, as I like the stuff to be available again, so that new fans, as well as newer CD Player owners, can get it. On the other hand, each time it gets re-released, it has something different than the previous version, almost like a bait. "Yeah, you bought this LP before, BUT!, it did not have THIS on it!" For those of us that have already bought them, it would be so nice to have a couple double length CDs that had nothing more than "B"sides, out-takes, and rarities. Do not get me wrong, I love these new BB re-issues, just wish they had gone all the way, and put all the other stuff on them as well. One last thing, has anyone any idea on the sales of Exile, both in the UK(to be measured againts his previous works) then again for total worldwide sales? Please feel free to answer these either to the list, or to me personally.
