To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Dear all, Just an obscuratum. On the '82 Visage album, 'The Anvil', there's a song called "Move Up" that contains the line: "Save the liquid friends..." To me, that's a clear example of Nu-speak, and I take it as a reference to the man. Probably not an intended homage, just an influence. I'm wondering if anyone else knows of any references that other artists have made? I also just came across the Hohokam single, "King." The drums are a clear lift from Gary's sound-- his touch is quite audible in the production. It makes me also wonder if this is the only Numa label act that Gary produced or collaborated on. Does anyone know? love, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 00:29:47 +0100 From: "Barry Lynch" Subject: To: "Numan News" Its 12:17am Me & Andy West have stopped off at my office after seeing the concert. Ironically (you Americans can look that one up in the dictionary!) Gary was wearing a suit with a mandarin collar, with the jacket coming down to his knees- ie just like a Catholic Cassock! He mainly played stuff from 'Tubeway Army' and 'Replicas'. EXCELLENT! Gary introduced a guest bass player for 'Cars'- it was Martin Clunes (English Actor whose only film was 'Staggered', but he is in the No1 sitcom 'Men Behaving Badly' which is a 'lads' version of 'Absolutely Fabulous') Thats all your getting, except for those of you who said that 'Moral' was a progression from 'Metal': If this was so, then why did he perform a brilliant version of 'Metal' tonight instead of 'Moral'???????? Barry Lynch London PS Dave Ellison came all the way over from the States to see the show, and got Andy to buy him a ticket, but didn't turn up to get it! Is he still wandering around Buck-ing-ham Palace in his check trousers looking for Sheep-hurds-Bush? or did he get another ticket elsewhere and forget to pay Andy for the one he bought? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 11:53:00 +0100 From: "MARSH, Phil" Subject: A couple of matters arising To: "'Gary Numan'" From: "Peter Enright" Subject: Anyone out there? Sorry Peter, I really don't know the correct answer to your question, but I had to take issue over something you said:- >1. Gary pinched the music from the film (unlikely) for "The Angel Wars". Why is it unlikely?! Gary?! Steal bits from films?!!! Maybe you were being ironic or summat! Here a snippet I've never seen mentioned - the melody to "My Breathing" appears (exactly the same) in an episode of Spitting Image from about a year or so before Strange Charm was released...strange but true. From: "Peter Enright" (again) Subject: METAL 46...he listened carefully to the 20th. anniversary version of "Metal"...quickly replacing it with his Led Zeppelin Remastered CD and selected "When The Levee Breaks". the drums sound exactly the same ... GN in sudden Led Zep fixation shock! "Oooooohhhhh....and they're climbing a staAAAIRWay to heeeveeeerrrrnnnnn" Oh my God.... Seriously though, maybe the drummer had been listening to Led Zep and came up with the idea in rehearsal. Good spot, though! From: David Paul Banks Subject: NUMAN ORCHIDS >I would like to name a very dark orchid (it is almost >black) after Gary, but I would need his permission for that. How can I >get his O.K.? He's got an email address on his website that you can write to (sorry don't have it to hand at the mo'). >where did the name "Telekon" come from and what does it mean Telekinesis - the power to alter things physically with your mind. Original concept behind the album, but not used much in the end. A telekon was someone with the power (I think that was the case). ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Sep 1998 10:53:04 -0500 From: Craig/Dawn Stenseth Subject: anyone out there/ Angel Wars intro To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Peter, Without meeting you, I can't discount possibility #3 (you are insane), I will offer these 2 theories: 4. The "Angel Wars" intro is a 'preset' on one of Gary's synths, and the Russian soundtrack dudes (oops, I mean comrades) have the same model. It seems like the Korg Wavestation is a likely candidate. 5. The "Angel Wars" intro is available on a 'sample' CD that both Gary and the R.S.D. used in their respective music. Back to lurking. I am assuming that the offending parties were simply jealous. After all, their fan bases probably overlap a great deal (especially in my case). -Ian ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Sep 1998 18:40:44 -0400 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Marilyn Manson To: Gary Numan After reading a review of Mechanical Animals in the Times I've decided th= e new Marilyn Manson album will be an essential purchase. I was worried before because Manson had said that it wasn't going to be a= s heavy as Antichrist Superstar. However David Sinclair in The Times talks about the "shock rock huckster", his "contrived image", the "predictable= sci-fi imagary" and "cartoon electro-glam-rock". Basically, he doesn't li= ke it. The point is, if Sinclair doesn't like it, there's a fair chance it will be a work of genius. His most revealing comment is: the songs will "sit comfortably on the shelf alongside those almost-forgotten albums by Babylon Zoo and Gary Numan." If anything Sinclair says can be believed then Mechanical Animals should = be required listening for Numan fans. --- I've been trying to find out about Replicants (or The Replicants). I have= the 11 track album that includes Are Friends Electric? and I've discovere= d that the band was made up of resting members of Failure, Tool & Zaum (not= sure about the last one?). I always heard that The Smashing Pumpkins and/or The Rentals were involve= d somehow but it seems this certainly wasn't the case with the album that w= as released. Was there a seperate and unconnected group formed later for a o= ne off gig? Anyone know? I know The Rentals have acknowledged Numan's influence and Bill Corgan ma= y owe a small lyrical debt to Gary. Aside from the live single with "On Broadway" and "Remember I Was Vapour" - if you hold the single up to the light, it isn't really black vinyl, it's blood red! Ok, so it may be a silly detail...but when I was 16 I thought is was way cool...somehow CD's don't have the romance of vinyl... In this message, please let us know who you >are, who some of your favorite artists are, how long you have listened >to Gary Numan. Let us know if you play any instruments or anything else >that might come to mind. Hi, I was previously on the list a couple of years ago and am glad to be back. Without giving away my age, my favorite artists are the demi-Gods now who were considered talentless hacks when they first made records. I like Kraftwerk, the Ramones, the hilarious Sex Pistols, Ultravox, Japan, Holly & the Italians, the satirical art group Devo, Wall of Voodoo, and countless other one-off punk bands like the Japanese one-LP wonders Films. For reasons I should probably see a shrink about, I've always loved the music of ABBA. Among those who were considered quite good when they came out, I like David Bowie, Tangerine Dream, and Frank Zappa (humor!). I first discovered Gary Numan just when Replicas came out, and quickly ran across the Tubeway Army discography. It's been a great ride ever since. I am primarily attracted to his lyrics and the mood-setting in his musical "stories." It's sophisticated fiction! I see a day when all literature is either recorded song, or words backed up with music. And finally, I hope to get to London to finally see a Numan concert! Gary answered this question in an interview a long time ago, but I don't remember which interview it was. Jean ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
