Good support band, very large crowd and a sense of expectation that this = was going to be one of the nights to remember.=20 I took one of my oldest friends who had seen Numan before but he hadn't = been exposed to the experience surrounded by Numan fan club members! He = loved it! We had made a day of it by going to see Chelsea first (good = win so we were in high spirits!) a couple of beers and then the man = performed. The gig was recorded on the Video but not a 'proper' recording, lets = hope that this does get released. Sound was good, Gary being more clear = in the vocals during the middle of the set but he seemed to enjoy it and = I only hope that some people from the music industry were present to = witness it! My one (very slight) criticism is the lighting show was not anything = like his previous tours. Thinking about it I presume that the cost = versus amount taken for one night would mean that it would not be worth = the outlay. Having followed Numan on tours throughout the country I feel that the = 'one offs' will work better than the 20 date tour. My reasons as = follows: The place was sold out The 'exclusivity' was a must to be there The atmosphere was electric He could give his all for just one night Nottingham (my home city) is planned for the next one in January 1999 = but to be honest it could be anywhere in the country and I would have = been there!=20 Best wishes to all who attended (I was the one in the Chelsea away shirt = - white with Autoglass on it) Stephan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 09:15:11 +0200 From: DE VISSCHER Luc Subject: 20th anniversary edition To: NUMAN Digest Sorry for the late reaction, but someone sent in the following which I found really hilarious! The glorious twelfth To: numan@cs.uwp.edu So I arrived at Glasgow airport around 6.20am to catch my flight at 6.30am. I slumped into my seat having not slept a wink from the previous night. The anticipation had caused my mind to ramble. One hour later, we touched down at Heathrow. As I reached up for my bag, and my Numan badge became visible to the people below the locker, I remembered again one of the reasons I love being a Numan fan. The two guys sitting there were also going to the gig. They seen I was on my own and suggested we all hang together. Another frienship made, we had some coffee etc at the airport and enthused about the coming event. We ambled along to the hotel and sat in the lounge for some hours, just soaking up the whole atmosphere as more and more fans arrived and joined us. It was soon time fro me to go meet all my internet friends in the Firkin pub, next door to the gig. It really was a pleasure to meet them all. This included Tina (lady), Colin (Valhalla), MikeRSlides (Mike), MrsMikeRSlides(Tina), ZomZom(Ron or John), Woody(Paul), MrWall(Brian) and Mrs Wall (Sorry,Did not get her name) Stevie, Stevie2, Davie and many, many others. Putting the faces to the names was exciting but their collective knowledge, intellect, enthusiasm, character and wit made the whole day very special for me. The time had come and the doors opened. As the empire filled to capacity, the air of anticipation was incredible. We all knew this was the last gig for a few months and we were gonna make sure it was a great one. The support band were above average and they received a healthy acclaim. At around 9.05pm, the moment arrived. Gary recieved an outstanding welcome from the London crowd but, still not as good as Glasgow yet!! :-)) Friends kicked in and the whole place errupted. Followed by metal, the place was jumping. It was so good to be there. I nearly did not go to this gig as all my freinds from up here (Scotland) could not go. I would have regretted it enormously. I have nothing negative to say about an outstanding day. The gig was kickin. Most of the replica`s album was played. I met many new friends and just fuckin enjoyed myself. I did, however, forget the words to "It must have been years". I do hope this was just a temporary memory block and not a sign that I am getting old.(At around 1.45am I knew I was getting old as bed beckoned me in) It must be said that this was the first time I had ever forgot the words to any numan song, unlike Gary himself!! So there it is. Its gonna be quite some time before we see him again. Hopefully its Glasgow in March. I will then have the pleasure of meeting all you guys again. Thanks once more to you all for a great day. P.S. Someone, at some point asked me what was my most prized possession re Numan stuff. I hold no regard for material things and hence gave no real answer. In hindsight the answer is simple. My most prized Numan stuff is the friends I meet and the music in my heart. Thankyou Mr Numan for over 20 years of music in my heart. If the film in question was indeed "Best of the Best", it starred Eric Roberts (Julia's brother) and Christopher Penn (Sean's brother) and was based around some sort of martial arts contest in which they were representing America (I'm doing this from memory so I'm allowed to be vague). It is as bad as it sounds but someone with money thought it was good enough to make a sequel - I bet you can't guess what they called it (hint - it has the number 2 in it). Now for the anorak bit.....a soundtrack was released on the FM Film label, cat. no. FMOVIXD 144 but it is now deleted. Having said that, if the soundtrack is as bad as the film then there'll be plenty of copies somewhere. I just returned from the Cleopatra office and they've finally got the Remodulate cds ready to ship. (There was some sort of pressing problem at the factory). We couldn't figure out if there's going to be a new release date or if they will just be going out "late" (yeah like 6 weeks!!). But they look great (I think) there are very few printing mistakes (extremely minor) and the only thing I'm not happy about is that they added a bright pink 'sticker' on the cover of the box that says "included rare and unreleased material - 2 cd set" which if I'd seen, I'd at least have made the color match the box (which is a glowing orange/brown cover). The bonus tracks are on there and they sound great so I'm looking forward to seeing the set (which I compiled as well as doing the artwork) in stores and getting people's reactions (which experience tells me will be quite divergent but fire away...). Also they gave me an advance pressing for The Fury which will be released November 10 (I think) in the USA; includes five bonus tracks (one previously unavailable anywhere on cd), all the lyrics and additional photos (mostly from the box set and the 12" singles). I hope you all like it... Next up will be the Berserker set which likely won't be out until next year. I'll let you know the progress and the bonus tracks for that as they are available. I'm aiming for a couple bonus track that hopefully most of you won't have, although previously released are currently not available anywhere. So bring on the good luck I could use some!! This venue is near to the Hammersmith Apollo which Gary always used to play. My *GUESS* is that it holds about 2,500 people. It seemed packed last night! Supporting band were Dollshead, who said that they were from L.A. They were a four-piece band, of which the singer was a girl. Some of their songs had backing tracks which gave good intros, likely to appeal to Numanoids. Some of the numbers were catchy, but by no means all..... It got a bit samey after a while. When Gary arrived on stage, dressed in a long coat (like an Orthodox priest, but without the trappings) and those boots he seems to like these days, the crowd went wild - but then again, the crowd was not a complete cross-section of the population, just the fanatics, with the odd husband, wife, son or daughter or friend thrown in! I did not note down the set list this time, so not in any order, the show included: It Must Have Been Years Me I disconnect From You Are Friends Electric The Machman Replicas Down In The Park We Are So Fragile Cars Metal Noise Noise Every Day I Die The Seed Of A Lie Absolution Desire Dead Heaven Dark Dominion Day Exile Friends We Are Glass I am sure that I have missed a few, but you can see that we had a real treat. The light show was not remarkable, but sufficiently good to enhance the scene. During one song, Gary was bathed in that eerie blue-grey-green colour, while the rest of the stage was red and purple. It looked like Gary was not flesh and blood - three dimensional, rather he looked like a holographic projection, or where they superimpose a figure by computer.... Steve Harris, when his guitar work was not needed, had his guitar on the floor, and was moving around very loosely, like an outsize puppet, with the puppeteer experimenting to find out how the strings work... For "Cars", he was joined on stage by Martin Clunes, a comedy actor who is well-known in this country, playing (?) a Chapman stick. For one song in the encores, John Webb came on and took over a keyboard station. David Brookes has done something to his beard - shaved it off (?) or trimmed it down or something - hard to tell from where I was - officially level 2, but actually the third layer of people (i.e. after the balcony). I might write more later, but my wife wants me to sort out the kitchen. Paddy Vickers ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 11:08:43 +0100 (BST) From: "P.G. The drums are a > clear lift from Gary's sound-- his touch is quite audible in the > production. It makes me also wonder if this is the only Numa label act > that Gary produced or collaborated on. Does anyone know? He produced all of them! And furthermore, in the vast majority of cases he gave them the same kind of sound you can find on Berserker (best example, Pump Me Up by Caroline Munro) and The Fury (12" extended mix of Hohokam's "Harlequin Tears" is very much in the mould of the extended Call Out The Dogs, with a film soundtrack added). He also gave many of his acts that sampled snare drum sound of the Fury, which was an acquired taste and did not suit ballads or softer songs. If you want to explore the Numa catalogue, then you're best off getting hold of the Numa Records Year 1 album, though the sad fact of the matter is that most of the acts weren't much cop. The only proper 'band' was Grey Parade, and they were so 1980's Top Man it's unreal. Of the Numa stable, Hohokam were probably the most promising. Anyone out there got a bootleg of Seven Deadly Sins to trade/copy? BTW, if your clip of Visage was some kind of homage to GN, then he didn't repay the compliment; cf. "I like romantics, but I don't like Steven" - a reference to Steve Strange in I Assassin's "War Songs". > For the benefit of the unenlightened digest subscribers, will someone > PLEASE let us know just what David Bowie and Marc Almond said about Gary > Numan that pissed him off so much? Bowie threw him out of a TV studio, where Numan was watching him perform a live set. No idea why. Of the Almond rivalry, I'm sure it was the diminutive homosexual who started it all. I remember him reviewing Warriors on TV and he was absolutely scathing, calling Numan pathetic and ridiculing his image, something along the lines of "You can't tell where the fake sun tan meets the transplanted hair line." A bit contrived, but not a bad one-liner!! There was a Numan interview transcribed onto picture disc that was doing the rounds in 1985, and Numan says something along the lines that although he likes to give everyone the benefit of the doubt until he meets them, he thinks Almond is an utter wanker, an opinion he's had no reason to change since. I think Numan should just deck the irritating little shit and have done with it. Keep the faith, Numan people! Phil. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 20:56:18 +1000 From: "E. The "Angel Wars" intro is available on a 'sample' CD Either of these theories (or indeed TikTokMan's 3) could explain a recent discovery I made. The title track from 'Exile' is my favourite, especially because of the slurring percussion effect, which I thought was pretty cool & unique. However a new Tangerine Dream CD ('Transsiberia' - there's those Russian soundtrack dudes again) has a track ('Smoky Karlow') with the same percussion sound on it, obviously from the same source. An earlier live TD track, 'Dominion' (familiar title too... but actually the name of the venue) from the 'Logos' album of '82 has a similar (but not identical) percussion sound to 'I Nearly Married a Human'. This one is probably a coincidence, but with modern music-making technology this kind of thing is more commonplace now. Still, it's how you use the tool that counts, and as much as I like TD, I think Gary's songs are superior in both cases. Are Numan fans the only people who would want to have their exile extended? E. Baring that in mind, I found last night far better than expected (miserable old scrote that I am). Gary came on dressed like Father Ted (UK sitcom about Irish catholic priests) - long black cassock thing - and stayed dressed like that for the duration. He looks a lot slimmer than when he last played over here - seems to have lost his slightly podgy "hamster cheeks" - and generally moved around a bit more - the "nodding dog" dancing much in evidence! The band were excellent; the best I'd seen this band play. A lot more "in to it" on the night. The guitarist (I'm hopeless with names, sorry!) never stopped moving all night and looked like he was really enjoying himself - when he was playing he was all over the place, and when he wasn't, he was dancing around the stage flinging his arms in all directions. The sound mix was a bit ropey at times - the soaring string lines tended to come through loud and clear, but on a lot of tracks (mainly the Exile and Sacrifice ones), all I could make out was a drum pattern and a muddy drone. Why Gary's vocals all but disappeared on some of the newer tracks beats me. Seems that nearly every time I go to see a band at the SB Empire, the sound is muddy...beats me. That said, the set started off well, all the band enjoying themselves. Hit a bit of a lull when he played stuff from Exile and Sacrifice - seems to me if the sound balance is wrong, these tracks just come across as dirgey, instead of how they are on CD...the subtlety doesn't come across too well. That said, it was the first gig where I enjoyed Absolution - the live arrangement now is really good (never thought I'd say that about Absolution!). Dead Heaven and Dominion Day came off best of the Exile tracks (to me anyway). I'll leave the full set list to someone else, but the show started with Friends (just the 1 track off the 1st album) and he played 5 tracks off Replicas - the usual choices plus "It Must Have Been Years" and "The Machman". The newer version of Metal (as played last year) sounds more lively now, as does Gary's interpretation of Jesus Jones' interpretation (!) of We Are So Fragile. UK comedy actor and director-of-that-film-Gary-is-appearing-in, Martin Clunes came on and played bass on Cars - stood at the front of the stage with a HUGE grin on his face all the way through - looked like he really enjoyed himself on that one (as did the crowd). A bespectacled (and tubby) John Webb came on to play keyboards for Replicas on 1 of the encores - he also got a good reception. I think Gary introduced him, but it was impossible to make out a single word Gary said where we were stood. Gary was on for about 1 and 3 quarter hours (including both sets of encores). The crowd went mental for most of it (quite a mosh pit was going on down the front), and the atmosphere was superb throughout. For once, I think Gary has made the right decision - one off gigs bring out the sense of occasion far better, in both the crowd, the band, and I think, him. A pity the energy of the early part of the set wasn't kept up, but I'd still say that's the best gig I've seen him do in recent years. Cue loads of other reviews saying its was the best gig ever... :-) Cheers all Phil ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 09:29:16 EDT From: Jamesy999@aol.com Subject: Shepards Bush.. I did happen to see that the film was made in 1989. So it pre-dates "The Angel Wars" by almost a decade. Without concrete proof, this leaves me to conlude that maybe Gary saw it and liked the riff? He has in the past mentioned that he gets some of his ideas from films he's seen. So...Peter I'm afraid I can't tell everyone you're not insane...but, I did try to confirm your story! And anyway, the snippet of music appears to be a complete mix, not just a sampled rhythm or instrument. We all know that Gaz only steals bits of cool flicks. Craig's suggestion that it might have already existed on a sample CD is a better possibility, as the Russians most definitely do not have the money, time or expertise to alter the soundtrack - they just dub a Russian translation (often incorrectly) over the top of the original. Which is sometimes really funny, like during rape scenes the girl screams "NO NO NO!" and a second later a bored sounding Russian MALE voice comes in with "Nyet, nyet nyet ..." Well you had to be there I guess ... But I digress, if that is the case, then Gaz didn't alter it at all which I find hard to believe ... has anyone actually listened to a copy of this film? Which I believe is titled "THE BEST OF THE BEST". Maybe it is used again, or other Numan tracks are ... ? What I'd like to know is WHEN this film was made, that might give us a clue ... I've still got an extra UK Telekon LP (as in vinyl) for sale or trade! I'm not looking for a million dollars here, but I was hoping some Numanoid (probably from the US) would make me an offer of some sort. The album is in great shape and includes the free live 7" single ("On Broadway" b/w "Remember I Was Vapour"). I presumed someone from the US might not have the UK vinyl as it differs slightly from the US vinyl. For those who might not know about the UK Telekon LP (BEGA 19), it has the track "Sleep By Windows" instead of "I Die: You Die". I'm not saying this is a collector's piece or anything, but both the LP and single are extras I recently picked up. I would entertain any offer or trade, if you've got one.
