Wide Awake by Windows 98! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Sep 1998 19:48:53 -0500 From: Valerie Iglar-Mobley Subject: 'Metal' rhythm and Led Zeppelin To: Riana Pfefferkorn Dear Riana, Gary might not have actually lifted "Metal 20"s drum track from Zep's "When the Levee Breaks." The question we have to ask is: at what point does a song become part of the language of music and no longer just one of its messages? The Beastie Boys used the same rhythm on their "Rhymin' and Stealin'" off the (horribly sexist) 'License to Ill' album and Sisters of Mercy used it in "Never Land" from the (excellent) 'Floodland' album. And those are just the references that I know of. It might be safe to say that that drum line has become a classic, and Gary may have just gleaned it from the general store of musical ideas-- rather than from Led Zep directly. I don't know, really, but somehow I suspect that Gary is not a Zep fan. Don't get me wrong, I absoluetly am! I even enjoy Kristen Hersh's (drumless) rendition of "When the Levee Breaks". lots of love, (way, way down inside!) Benjamin Iglar-Mobley P.S. Very glad to have the extended version plus all the bonus tracks. The tracks lists are: Dominion Day (extended mix) Metal (20th anniversary version) <--- "Exile Tour" style Voix (20th anniversary version) <--- "Exile Tour" style Dead Heaven (extended mix) Down in the Park (20th anniversary version) <--- "Exile Tour" style Dominion Day (live) Cars (live) There is also a shortened "album" version of Dominion Day which is not listed on the packaging or liner notes, which is my only real criticism of the CD. The track listings are incomplete AND out of order. They list only 7 tracks (and are not in the order listed) and the additional version of Dominion Day not even mentioned. The live versions are from the U.K. 1997 Exile tour (Sheppard's Bush show). The catalogue number for this CD is CLP 0347-2. All in all I am glad to have the CD, and very happy to have the "new" versions of the older tunes. Just wish Cleopatra had the shit together enough to get there own product correct. Talk about embarrassing. To me that is like misspelling your own name. Just thought I would pass the info along. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Martin Clunes wasn't playing a Chapman Stick at the Empire last Saturday, it was Ade Orange's Hohner B2B Bass. This is itself a copy of the much more expensive Steinburger Headless, bodyless, cricket bat shape and pick-ups. I've played one for years, and though it was pretty cool when Ade started playing one. Unfortunately he's not too hot a bass player! Martin Clunes was actually pretty good, even considering it's an easy line to play. He certainly moved around and enjoyed himself more than Ade does. Talented though Martin Clunes is, if he could play a Chapman stick he probably wouldn't be an actor, he'd be a musician! They are notoriously difficult to play - they're a combination of a guitar an bass (12 strings? or maybe more), and the technique is like neither. Good players are very few and far between. I think Tony Levin, who plays(played) for Peter Gabriel used to play one. I did think the empire show was absolutely spot on, the new version of Friends is just ace! I sometimes think that the new intros he's done for the older songs (to disguise them) could herald new directions in his music - We are so Fragile, for example, sounded like a whole new song for the first 30 seconds. Sad to say, I nearly wet myself when I thought it was some new material, 'cause it sounds stunning! I really think he could use getting away from the seriously doom-laden stuff. Two albums is enough. My only problem with the show was the same as usual - I couldn't hear a word Gary said, but then, you never can. I liked the support band, they got a suprisingly un-hostile reaction. The crowd didn't start chanting 'Numan, Numan, Numan' until near the end of their set! A point to whoever said that the support began to sound 'samey' after a while, can you imagine what a non-Numanoid would think of 5 Exile or Sacrifice songs in a row? That drum sound does get _very_ wearing after a bit. John Webb might be a little tubby, but he does play keyboards well. To: The Gary Digest Dear Rod Reynolds, We fans appreciate the efforts of all at Cleopatra to keep the Gary flag flying, but I think we're deep into 'overkill' territory in the land of compilations. Enough, already. I've seen the 'Remodulate' set, and I'm afraid I have to pass on shelling out $30 just to hear the variant versions of "New Thing" and, what was the other one? "Dying Machine"? As my wife pointed out, that's $15 a tune. Are these 'best of's really selling well enough to justify their slow parade? I mean, how many do we need? I have three, I know of at least seven more. How many came out just in this past year? Here's an idea. Since it's only us, his fans, buying these things anyway, why not follow the suggestion made numerous times here and elsewhere and put out the Definitive Gary Compilation including... ALL the versions of songs and bonus bits that are not going onto any album's reissue. And then be done with it. sorry, not so loving this time, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley * * * "Does everything stop when the old tape fails?" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Sep 1998 21:16:11 -0500 From: Scott Gibbons Subject: Marilyn Manson Revisited To: numan@cs.uwp.edu >>>new Marilyn Manson album will be an essential purchase. >Personally, I would say it is the perfect combination of 6 artists: I notice "Marilyn" doesn't fit into your list of "artists who Marilyn sounds like." Doesn't he have anything original of his own to say or play?? Sorry to be such a sour puss in a public forum but one of the reasons I hate "Marilyn" while adamantly loving all of the bands whose influence he wears on his sleeves is that Bowie, SSS, Numan, Bolan et al exhibited large crusts of ORIGINALITY. I recognized a lot of images from his latest video too (and ditto, I loved Jodorowski's "the Holy Mountain," where the room-of-mannequins image actually had some symbolic meaning... You think Marilyn could come up with an original video idea too?) Anyone who's heard Coil's "Tainted Love" or the Human League's "Nightclubbing" knows exactly what I'm talking about. Nobody lives in a vacuum... everyone has influences... but Numan does NOT sound like Japan. Bowie does NOT sound like Marc Bolan. But Marilyn Manson doesn't even sound like Marilyn Manson! So, I'll just be abling down to the record store to buy a remastered Numan 'classic' a lot sooner than I'll buy a new MM CD. The old Numan will sound fresher. (Sorry if I'm stepping on toes - well, not really - but people please don't settle for less than you have to! Good grief, if this isn't alt.radio.hits I don't know what is; I can hear it catching on on college radio all over the US, anyway--good meaty lyrics that aren't too abstruse, really catchy guitar/melody, relevent topic. Anyone know why this wasn't produced properly and, well, released as a single?? Too inflammatory, or what? Or is it just me and everyone else is totally unimpressed? Aside from the live single with "On Broadway" and "Remember I > Was Vapour" - if you hold the single up to the light, it isn't really black > vinyl, it's blood red! I found this comment interesting because it contradicts something someone told me once. That the one's which are red when you hold them up are rare. The original one I got isn't red when you hold it up to the light, so I have believed what I was told. On the other hand I went into an obscure record stall in Hyde, Gtr Manchester and I got two from there, so maybe the black one's are the rare ones. Anybody feel like dragging out their copy and checking if it's red or black? Actually I love Gary's coloured vynl's, especially the blue colour on Tubeway Army- fantastic! I also love the picture discs, except I found them really hard to play at the nightclub because I couldn't see where the track started- What am I doing playing picture discs? well only the 10" of 'I Can't Stop', I didn't play the others. Oh by the way thanks Ben for the compliment in the last digest. While I'm on Ben tells me that Bowie wanted Gary to leave the studio because Bowie was on drugs. I also heard Gary say that Bowie and Lou Reed said some not very nice things about him. On the other hand I saw Bowie interviewed on Countdown (another rage re-run here in sunny Australia) and he was very complementary. Didn't I hear that Marc Almond died? Personally I think it's unprofessional for artists to say nasty things about each other, especially if they haven't even met the artist they are criticizing. Now for something completely irrelevant. My @ sign is where my " should be, I think someone has been feeding drugs to my keyboard. well cheerio Jean ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Sep 1998 19:40:33 +0800 From: "Peter Enright" Subject: the mystery continues ... To: "Digest Numan" Report from Russia: Thanks to Paul Lavin for doing some splendid investigation work, but you were beaten to the punch (ouch! forgive the bad pun) by Lisa Yimm; she had just seen The Best Of The Best on cable but did not see the suspect sequence. After e-mailing me, she was able to determine that the as-yet unidentified martial arts movie is probably the the previous one and first of this series. Or is it the sequel? But whatever it's called it also stars Bruce Lee clone Simon Rhee and Eric Roberts, but ends with a one-on-one fight to the death between Simon and some Dolph Lundgren type in an arena surrounded by a crowd of cheering spectators in dinner suits and cocktail dresses. I checked my video again and it's definitely the intro to Angel Wars (exactly 15 min before the end), which is making the "Gaz used the same sample CD" theory the most likely scenario. If only SOMEONE could independently confirm this ... please. And if it is confirmed, what do I win huh?
