I think Gary does a little more playing around with the songs than he usually does with his extended versions (and, really, anywhere to go from that album is up!). He brings forward some elements that we might otherwise miss. [Interestingly, my extended version is missing the bonus songs. Get this, I actually like it better for that reason! Now it's more like a version of the album than just a comilation of oddities. Of course, having those bonus songs elsewhere helps.] In contrast, 'Sacrifice', one of favorite Gary albums, I think suffers in its extended format. The songs are just longer-- they're stretched out-- with nothing new really brought out of them. Let me make an analogy. If Michelangelo had sculpted another "David" statue-- same pose, same physique-- only 'scaled up' to bigger dimensions... would it be a "better" sculpture? I don't think so. Personally, I don't think that bigger is always better. love, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley P.S. To: "Gary Numan" Oi! Two spams inserted, like virtual jetsam, in the latest Digest. The commercial hordes are brewing soups foul and murky. Are invasions of sectored mail lists are the next territory to be conquered -- er, marketing opportunity to be exploited? Wonder if there is an auto-signup hack out there being passed among the net scum? Sorry for being off-topic, now it's off to find a Mini mail list (preferably without spam)! Dan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Sep 1998 14:51:29 -0500 From: Valerie Iglar-Mobley Subject: Berserker's ending To: James Chapman Dear James, I think ending on a ballad is a nice way to finish off an album. It gives a little "amen" to the performance and lets us down gently. But I think Gary has overdone it. He's relied on it too much. I actually think, for instance, 'Strange Charm' would have been stronger if he'd had the title track AFTER "This Is Love." It would be like a "Well, we're drawing to a close, now... but before we wrap it up, here's one last hurrah!" I think "The Hunter" ends 'Berserker' quite dramatically. While "A Child With The Ghost" is a terrific song, it doesn't have that "amen" quality. If it were the last song, I think the album would feel more like it were just sputtering out. 'Telekon', my favorite album, follows that progression. Its penultimate song is "Please Push No More", a lovely ballad that lets us stretch out and breathe after all the energy and tightness of the rest of the album. We're starting to bring the experience to a close. But then comes "The Joy Circuit", my absolute favorite Gary song and his most dramatic. For me, the feeling conveyed by that placement is one of "I'm letting you go, but remember I'm still here, and I'm going to continue making some of the most powerful music to ever be born of a human mind. You can go now, but you're not allowed to forget." I was listening to my Numa Years box set version of The Fury and was once again reminded to write this observation/question to the digest. The version of Call out the Dogs on this re mastering is a DIFFERENT version than appeared on the original vinyl. The mix is slightly different (to be expected) but the lyrics at a few points and the keyboard line after the verses are totally new (different at least). The ending is also different, as it has a distinct ending to the song as opposed to the fade out on the original vinyl version. It seems a little strange to have different versions than what appeared on the original release. While I would understand a different mix and different mastering at the very least, having an out-and-out different version of a song is very odd. Glad to have a different "take" on the song, but at the same time I would have liked to have had a CD recording of the original version. Anyone know the availability of the original in CD form? Any thoughts, questions? Numan really does know how to make an exteneded song, he doesn't obscure so it's unrecognizable, or throw in studio tricks that sound cheesy, he just adds more drama, more elements of wonder. And, maybe the "20th Anniversary version" label is inaccurate and stupid for "Voix," "Metal" and "Down In the Park," but, these are some of the best versions of these songs I've ever heard. They're even comparable to the orignals -- hell, "Voix" is better! By the way, the sample at the beginning of "Metal"(the screech) was lifted from Malcom McClaren's "Buffalo Girls" (one of my favorites). So, besides, the poor design and listing, the music is awesome and isn't that what counts? My only complaint is the cost, I paid $10.99, and I think if Cleopatra wanted to make some new fans that's too much money -- which is a shame. I haven't emailed in a while, so, I'll go on a bit more -- why are we analyzing Gary? He's been doing his thing for 20 years and we love him for it -- let's leave it at that and just be glad he's making the brilliant music he is and not another "Machine and Soul." With the new commercials for the new VW Bugs using alternative music like Spiritualized, wouldn't it be great if they used "Cars," the song is made for a car commerical, and it would give Gary a great boost in the U.S. Lastly, I have one question -- On the new extended version of "Scarifice" on Eagle, does it sound better than the "Dawn" version? Is this version of "Sacrifice" the same as the one included on the Numa Years? (I guess that's two questions). Also, the last verse of "She's Got Claws" "Laughing Hyenas with Pens for Charm, You'll just suck in the boys... We have to leave soon, Shudder the Door, This house is far too cool" That whole song is just lyrically brilliant, in my opinion. -Escher ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Sep 1998 08:15:10 +-1000 From: Martin Purvis Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #472 To: "'Gary Numan'" It's great to see so much Spam in the Digest these days. On Sun, 27 Sep 98 01:00:01 CDT, numan@cs.uwp.edu wrote: >This is a multi-part message in MIME format. This happens a lot, and the sender is actually sending two copies of the message. Worse, often the encoding is faulty and it sets weird text/colour modes which don't get reset at the end of the message, which means the remainder of the Digest following such messages is viewed in the same mode (if you have an HTML-compliant email client). I realize that the problem is with the senders, either because they're using brain-dead email clients and/or they're brain-dead themselves. (Note to aglobal@fcc.net - this means you). But since we've had no luck persuading people to fix this problem at their end, and indeed in the case of aglobal@fcc.net the user is new to the list and new to computers and this will only happen with increased frequency in future, I suggest the best way to eliminate this problem is with some sort of filter in the Digest software itself. Is this feasible? And while we're on the topic, two spams appeared in the Sunday Digest, and I believe there was another one in the previous Digest (or was it the one before?) Can the Digest not be set to reject emails (with a bounce message) from any email address that is *NOT* a registered RECIPIENT?
