Does anyone know if there are plans to re-release any of the remaining Beggars Banquet catalog? The cassette copy of "I Assassin" that I got in 1982 is still going strong after all these years (althugh I'm certain it would sound much better on cd), but I haven't heard "Dance" since my cassette bit the dust in my 1973 Nova 16 years ago! By the way, on another note, I was watching the news here in the states a week or two back...there was a piece on how the foreign media is covering President Clinton's sex scandal. They were interviewing a British disk jockey in his studio, and in the background he was playing "Cars." Hmmm...not sure what that means! It gives a little "amen" to the performance and lets us down gently. But I think Gary has overdone it. He's relied on it too much. I actually think, for instance, 'Strange Charm' would have been stronger if he'd had the title track AFTER "This Is Love." It would be like a "Well, we're drawing to a close, now... but before we wrap it up, here's one last hurrah!" I think "The Hunter" ends 'Berserker' quite dramatically. While "A Child With The Ghost" is a terrific song, it doesn't have that "amen" quality. If it were the last song, I think the album would feel more like it were just sputtering out. 'Telekon', my favorite album, follows that progression. Its penultimate song is "Please Push No More", a lovely ballad that lets us stretch out and breathe after all the energy and tightness of the rest of the album. We're starting to bring the experience to a close. But then comes "The Joy Circuit", my absolute favorite Gary song and his most dramatic. For me, the feeling conveyed by that placement is one of "I'm letting you go, but remember I'm still here, and I'm going to continue making some of the most powerful music to ever be born of a human mind. You can go now, but you're not allowed to forget." Benjamin Iglar-Mobley Well, I have tried listening to Strange Charm that way, and to be honest I have found it does sound very good. About Berserker, I really thought it would be nice to have "A Child with the Ghost" colliding into the gerat deprssing B-sides, but I guess that's what programmable CDs are for. I have the extended version of the album as well, and I think "The Hunter" is one of the best extensions on the album. As for Telekon, well "The Joy Circuit" couldn't be anything but the last track, because of its goodbye felling and the way it builds up at the end. but, of course on the CD it's spoilt by having "I Die:You Die" after it, which just happens to be my favourite song. But I would like Gary to have an upbeat last track for the next album in the mould of The Hunter / We Take Mystery / Joy Circuit, as it will be something different. But whatever, I've generally found the closing tracks to be excellent, with the exception of "I Nearly Married A Human", and possibly "Engineers" (no hate mail, please!) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- They crawl out of their holes for me...... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Oct 1998 17:40:39 +0100 From: "Nigel Lunn" Subject: Bootleg Video To: Just thought I would let you know I have just discovered a 90 min bootleg video of Gary Numan, It features live footage from Sacrifice tour 94 (London LA2), Premiere Tour 96 (Hammersmith Apollo), V.96 (Chelmsford), and The Exile Tour 97 ( Shepherds Bush Empire). He was standing in the crowd with all the paying punters looking not too nervous.... = (I wonder if he was pleased or pissed off that only a few people seemed t= o recognise him??). He said "Yes." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Oct 1998 12:11:49 -0800 From: theartdept@att.net (rod reynolds) Subject: Dominion Day mess To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello. Sorry I haven't had time to address this sooner; I have been extremely busy. Yes, there was obviously a printing problem with the Dominion Day singles in the US. They asked me to make a cd single combining the two UK singles. I decided that the edit version of DD was not essential, when there was already two versions of the same song there. So I left it off. I programmed the remaining seven tracks into what I felt was a comfortable listening order. I made a mock up of the artwork, which I took to the label and they approved it. Specifically we talked about the line on the front which says "contains 7 exclusive tracks' and its placement on the cover (I liked it in the spine - where it is, as opposed to over Gary's face across the bottom where it normally might be). I finished the cd artwork and made a cd-r of the tracks (which matched the artwork) for the label's use, and handed them in. When I gave them the cd-r, they said, 'oh, I had someone else do this, we don't need this" and gave it back to me. Several months later I received a frantic call. The cds had arrived at the label and had been shipped to stores before anyone realized that there were in fact 8 exclusive tracks on the cd and not 7, and they were in a different order... Well there was plenty of yelling let me tell you, most of it directed at me. But it wasn't my fault. No one at the label bothered to proof the cd, and it went out with a pretty major mistake on it. They did take my cd-r after all, and have re-pressed the cd. I don't think they recalled the first shipment, but I believe the new version is now available... I don't know and am not about to bring up *that* subject again... *sigh* Bye for now, Rod Reynolds The Art Dept Los Angeles ------------------------------ Date: 01 Oct 1998 09:08:24 +0000 From: Glenn.Bridges@asda.co.uk Subject: Favourite Lyrics To: numan@cs.uwp.edu If we are on the subject of favourite lyrics , my vote is for "the in to your sane". It says it was released in August. I placed an order for it September 22. So far it is still "on order". I was going to post about it if that changed to "order shipped" as I doubt that it really is available. I'll let everyone know if that happens, but I am not counting any chickens. They also indicate Outland is available on EMI, having been reissued in 2/98. Again, I have my doubts as nobody has mentioned it on the Digest and we have subscribers from all continents save Antarctica. I would love to be proven wrong about Extended Exile, Outland and no subscribers in Antarctica. Derek ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Rather similar to Gary's plea that Gary Numan get togethers are no longer called "Numan Discos". I'm sure he does think of himself as a metophorical Alien. Rather like his original title for the Autobiog of "Unknown and Hostile". Is he unknown and hostile though? I know we all like to think of Gary as being a bit distant, remote, different, weird, but these days he's one of the most open, accessible, and down to earth popstars around. As for Steve Malins, its good to see he's still around. Steve's sleevenotes on the Numa Years Boxset are great and show a healthy mix of Numan fan / casual observer. For instance he describes Numan's stage performance on the 1984 Berserker tour as "like watching Freddie Mercury in a Leigh Bowery costume". Te he. Whilst I have no idea who Leigh Bowery is/was I know what he means! Let's hope Steve has got the courage to speak up in front of Gary when he feels it necessary. I wish he would have a few words about that Father Ted outfit. Some of the clobber he's worn on the recent photosessions have been very stylish. Best he's looked ever (back cover of Newsletter 52/53), . He just looks slightly comical in that Father Ted outfit........... Austin ps who is that very perservering fan who rings up the Mark and Lard show on Radio 1 and suggests GN songs for their daily list of Top 10 song titles relevant to a particular news story. In the last two weeks alone I've heard A Question of Faith (Mark credited this to "Gary Numan and his Tubeway Army.....and Martin Clunes) and today This Wreckage (Mark credited this to "Gary Numan and his Tubilube Army" - it was a news story about DIY after all.......). Suffice to say they never made it into the Top 3 titles which guarentees a radio play.... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 10:26:12 +0200 From: DE VISSCHER Luc Subject: New Belgian cover of AFE To: "NUMAN BAKER Donald A Jr." , There is a new cover of a Belgian (more or less disco-) band called "Touch Of Joy" of Are friends electric. Anyone with a complete vinyl collection (in good nick) with a CD Writer...??! :-) Shock's first single "Angel Face" still sounds brilliant to me. > What ever happened to various Numan support bands ?? I asked this Q a couple of years ago...and got v. little response. Hohokam - the singer's fate was revealed last week ("evenin' all"!). Dunno about the rest of them. OMD - sometimes forgotten they supported Gary as well. Come together for a new compilation album out at the mo' - otherwise split up, band name defunct for a couple of years. Nash The Slash - 1 of my faves - still around a bit - his website is at: http://www.interlog.com/~theslash/ Larry Loeber - anybody know??? Didn't he have to leave the UK after the Berzerker tour when he couldn't get a work permit? Grey Parade - no idea, apart from they fell out with Gary BIG time. Paper Toys - eventually turned into a Nirvana-ish sounding band called Eden's Rage. My brother in law was on their mailing list. Last he heard they were due to go and do some recording in America (!), but that was a couple of years ago and its all been quiet since, so I guess nothing happened and it all fell apart. That's all I can think of for now - anyone else with any knowledge? Intolerance is owned by Survival Records and the master tapes were mislaid/lost I think. Not sure if Tim (Tik) has a copy though. I have some amazing Demo's that Tim did throughout the 80's which would be superb on a CD collection. Unlikely to happen though due to him not really working in the music arena anymore. Tim is acting mainly and Sean (Tok) was a video producer last I saw him. Getting Dynamo Beat for 80p is a good buy.
