While I've seen sites be brought down for posting copyrighted lyrics, I wasn't aware that copyright extended to song titles. Are they not generally too short to receive copyright? For example, if I use the word "Cars" in a post, am I violating copyright? What if I talk about Gary Numan and mention I have a Web page about "Cars?" How about if I write my own song called "Cars," which in fact I will do right now. Is this a copyright violation? "Cars" by Dan Herrin It's really hard to say from day to night to day which I like more: four on the floor or partying in bars. To: The Gary Digest Dear all, Gold star to the -noid who suggested offering our favorite lyrics-- an excellent idea! [Sorry I couldn't find your original post to give you proper credit.] I have a few copies of the Morrissey fan 'zine, 'A Chance To Shine', and they have a different fave list from a fan in each issue; I've always thought that was a great idea, just hearing from our comrades what she or he particularly liked from our hero. I must say, for myself the lyrics that have always stood out have been the homoerotic ones... but apparently they make some people uncomfortable around here, so I'll just pick one of them, and that would have to be: "The driver wants to touch me. He mentions all the old cop bullshit. I try to back away, but he's so strong I just can't move, Maybe I don't want to anyway." I've always loved those lines; they were the first lyrics to really grab me. To me they express an ambivalence about feeling attracted to the same sex. He's trying to back away from being touched by another man... but maybe he doesn't really want to. When I first heard them in my early teens I was still exploring my own feelings for men, and having some uncertainty about it, so that ambivalence resonated at a pretty deep level. Incidentally, in "Oh! Didn't I Say" is the line: "'Queenie', from a doorway says 'You got time?'" but on 'Live At the Roxy' it sounds more like: "...from a doorway says 'A good time.'" Of course, it works either way. They're both offers of prostitution. And if we interpret the 'Queenie' as a drag queen, then again his "panic" in response is another expression of ambivalence about same-sex attraction. Panic because the issue is too hot-- he secretly wants it, and is uncomfortable with his own desires. If he were just straight, it would be "no" without the panic. Now, before we get another barrage of messages arguing that Gary's straight and that these lyrics aren't homoerotic, remember this is my OWN interpretation. The original invite was to include what the lyrics mean to us. So cool it, guys. Post your own lyrics about Gary being hot for some babe. love to all, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley P.S. Okay, so it was two lyrics. Well, there were plenty of others that I could've listed, also. Give me credit for holding back that much, anyway. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Oct 1998 23:36:09 +0800 From: Jean Burgess Subject: Interview To: Gary Numan Hello everyone, Just incase this one actually goes to the digest this time. I did respond to the question about what David Bowie said in the interview. I'm still working on that one, because I can't remember, I did however find a quote from Andy Somners of The Police. I'll post it next time. I also have an interview which was done by the X-Press, it was a telephone interview. I don't have time to put it on the digest as yet, many assignments and final exams to consider. Also I'm not sure I can send large email messages, even if I send it as an attachment, I don't have time to sort it out right now. It's possible the X-Press have a web sight, otherwise I'll put it on in about 3 weeks when I have a little more time. When he introduced Gary on The White Room (a UK rock show), he made a couple of pretty sarcastic comments. My Dad saw it and said what a snide little shit Mark sounded like! My Dad & me agreeing! I must be getting very old. Austin, I was very subtle of course! And it's not like I didn't notice Da= ve Gahan, Alan Wilder and all the others. And Gary? You know the answer to that question, but I'm not going to give= the sad brigade any encouragement. Let them figure it out for themselves.= I am however going to be completely irrational and say he's excused. It w= as obviously essential that he examined the stage production - professional interest don't you know.... At least Gemma was animated. And I still think the living dead should sta= y away from Numan gigs. I have had 11 replies already, plus my own. Thank you to everyone who has replied- I didn't expect any so quick-I thought everyone would need more time to think! Another idea forwarded to me by Benjamin Iglar-Mobley is that you also specify which Numan album was your first, as they could have special memories attached. For anyone yet to reply, please could you specify which album you heard first with your list. And to those who have already replied, please could you send me an e-mail with your first album. I'll have no problem as my computer sorts out mail into alphabetical order. Thanks NOW...some results so far! The favourite album is...... 1. THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE (average rank 5.58) 2. MACHINE+SOUL (14.83) Top votes as follows: DANCE 4, BERSERKER, EXILE 2 REPLICAS, TPP, TELEKON, I I ASSASSIN, all 1 (SACRIFICE got 8 top 5 votes, which was more than any other, but no top votes) Bottom votes: M+S 5 THE PLAN 4 EXILE 3 The most interesting album would appear to be EXILE-it seems very much a love-hate album! I also have to mention about my choices, I (so far) have the dubious honour of rating Dance lower than anyone else, and I rate The Fury, Strange Charm, and Machine+Soul higher than anyone else (M+S is stil only number 12 however) Happy voting! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- They crawl out of their holes for me...... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Oct 1998 20:52:56 +0100 From: "Stephen Page" Subject: Thank you To: I posted my first message to the digest which came out this thursday and = I want to thank all those that took the time and trouble to email me. = And I was very pleased to learn that I am not the only gay Numanoid. I'm so glad all that all that religious and homowotsit clap trap has finally stopped.. On to a new question. In your view what was the single that never was ???? What track do you reckon that Numan might have put out to help him on his merry way.. I honestly think that "U Got The Look" should have been put out. The worst decision of a single was "This Wreckage". I'l probably get lambastered for this... (Okay, I know it is heresy to even think of not buying a Numan CD, but hear me out.) If someone could e-mail me the answers to the following questions, I would appreciate it: 1) The back of the CD said it was "released in England as 'Sacrifice.'" I never bought the "Sacrifice" album, but I have heard that it was released in both an original and an extended version. The "Numan/Dawn" CD is about 46 minutes long, according to the back cover, so I assume that it is not the extended version. Am I right? And are there any other differences between the US and UK versions? 2) "Numan/Dawn" is on the Eagle record label and made in the US. Is the sound quality of the single as good as, worse than, or better than the UK "Sacrifice" album? 3) The front cover is (obviously) different. Are the interiors of the booklets also different? Is "Numan/Dawn" missing anything crucial, such as song lyrics? The price of the "Numan/Dawn" CD is $16.99. Although I love the cover (sexist pig that I am), I want to be sure that the sound quality of the CD isn't worse than "Sacrifice" before I plunk down my money. After all, it's the music that matters, right?
