To: numan@cs.uwp.edu As an eleven year old....in 1979, I was more interested in action men and soldiers than Music...so when I found myself browsing around "woolworths" with a fifty pence voucher looking to buy an accessory for the aforementioned toy...I could not imagine that it was the moment that was to change my life. For on the way to the toy counter I passed the record shelves, and on the bottom shelf (at eye level for a four foot boy)... I saw a picture that just held my attention.....The 7" picture cover to DOWN IN THE PARK...I had never baught a record before, but I just knew I'd like it, just by the way he looked in that picture..... That was 19 years ago...since then I've baught every record available in every version on every format, followed every UK tour.... it has become my religion. There has been alot of talk on the digest about ranking favourite Numan albums, and indeed I too have my albums that are really anthems to me...but I feel its not a case of what good and whats not.....but what each album means to each individual. Warriors is by far my "favourite" numan album, but this is not based on his musical ability and composition, but it was on the Warriors tour when I first met Gary, as a fifteen year impressionable old fan.... The Fury and such like may get a slating from some areas, but it was still an awful lot better than any other artisits that were out in the backend of 85, and Berserker/Exhibition Tours of that time were some of the finest "shows" in his 20 years. Now THAT would have outsold both those other >albums combined. If I remember correctly White Noise and Dark Light included the whole recorded shows. There were no other tracks played on the nights in question. Also, Cleopatra do not have Gary's tapes, they are just taking already issued material and copying it over for their releases. They are working independantly of Eagle. I assume Cleopatra are trying to get product out quickly without having to do a lot of mixing/mastering/new artwork. By taking already released material from the UK and having Rod Reynolds create artwork from various preexisting sources, they are able to issue these albums fairly quickly. White Noise was probably scheduled before Gary's US tour was confirmed. I assume Cleo are trying to attract new fans as well as sell to the established fans. I doubt they think they are going to sell complete rehashes to fans who have UK editions, but by adding new-to-CD bonus tracks to the album CDs, they are picking up sales to US fans with the UK editions. Althoughh it would be nice to have all the bonus tracks on one CD, that doesn't make sense from a sales perspective. Remember Cleoaptra are a business, not a charity for Gary Numan fans. I don't know why they are not issuing the US Exile TOur on CD/video. Maybe its the Marilyn Manson problem. Heard a snitch of his new album and it wasn't bad. >Some of the other artists on it are: Dead Or Alive, Information Society, >Spahn Ranch, Gene Loves Jezebel, Bow Wow Wow, Kraftwelt, Heaven 17, 808 >State, and Keoki. Its catalog number is ALW 0008-2. These are all Cleopatra stable artists, so I assume the label is a subsidiary of Cleo. I clearly remember the SNL performance. Although I didn't enjoy the music of "I'm Praying ..." as much as the lyrics, I thought "Cars" was a blast. I remember how people I knew were freaked out by the music and style. Strange how times change, eh? Does anyone know the date of this show? I think I was sold on Numan when I first heard, "Down in the Park." Before then I just liked his music. But this song awakened me to much potential in music -- scene-setting, cool lyrics (vice the Carpenters-like banality that was common then), and over-driven analog synthesizers. I just recently was signed up for this so consider this my self introduction. I am 41 and live in Illinois. I have been a Gary Numan fan for 20 years. The first time I saw or heard him was on an episode of Saturday Night Live. He sang Cars, and I was hooked. It hasn't been easy to collect his C.D.s, but I keep hanging in there. I like a wide variety of music but Numan is really the only artist I can say I have consistly liked over the years. The man can't write a bad song. A while back, during the Exile tour, he played in Chicago and I was unable to attend. This will go down on my top ten list of Big Life Regrets, I have no doubt. A friend of mine was able to go and even spoke with Gary and Gemma after the show. He said they were extremely nice and talked with everyone for more than an hour, and even posed for pictures and signed autographs. My friend was able to get me a signed program and a t-shirt, which I shall cherish. Anyway, I'm glad to be on the list, and look forward to hearing any news that can be shared. Take care! _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
