Worst is Skin Mechanic, others I never bothered to buy, though I heard Dream Corrosion and I wish I had it, now... Live at the Roxy is interesting, but still poor. It's the sound quality more than the songs, some of the songs I'd love to hear a good quality recording of, for I'm in a minority... I like The Plan! <Favourite version of "Cars" !!!!> I only really like the original. Every remix of it misses out all the atmosphere that Gary's version had. But if I had to choose another, it'd probably be the Dave Clarke remix on random. < Favourite other artists apart from Numan> Today it's Placebo. I lie a lot of stuff, though, and this changes often. People I've constantly liked apart from Numan are - Alien Sex Fiend (third favourite after Gary and Placebo respectively) Siouxsie, The Cure, Bauhaus, Human League, Japan, John Foxx, Marc Almond (yeah, sorry... I just always liked the guy), Faith No More, and a few others. Placebo and Alien Sex Fiend are the only artists apart from Gary who have yet to record anything I have absolutely hated. I love every track on both Placebo albums, which for someone of my very limited attention-span is very very rare, and ASF are just such good fun (love their use of synths, especially live) and, along with Gary, reman the *only* other artists who have made whole albums that I can listen to all the way through without ever getting bored. Now that I have made yet more enemies by declaring an admiration for the Anti- Numan himself (Marc), I'll quietly shuffle off and wait until I'm ripped to pieces... hey - I can't help my musical tastes ;) Antonio 'Y'know... a kiss on the hand may be quite continental, man... but tactical thermo-nuclear weaponry is a guy's best friend!' What are your absolute hated Numan tracks ?? 1. 1999 2. U Got the Look While I like TAFKAP (The artist formerly known as Prince) quite alot as well... Numan's versions is just so wrong on many levels. I adore Numan's stuff.. and I enjoy TAFKAP's alot, this was truley a marrage made in hell.. or at least in heck at any rate. Alot of the rest of Machine and Soul was sub-par. Also not to keen on the PLan and quite a bit of Tubeway Army. Though there are some very good tracks on the later (Jo the Waiter, My Love is a Liquid, Everyday I Die). Radio Heart is aka High Nicholson aka Da Da Dang. Those who have heard the Radio Heart know that this while two of the 3 songs Gary contributed to are OK, the third (London Times) is awful and the rest of the album gets worse from there. Maybe they have added the recent Radio Heart remix as a "bonus" track? :-) Still, these releases will give fans a chance to get these rare Numan recordings. And if Nicholson has done as promised last year, the compilation should have all the extended and instrumental versions of the Numan/Nicholson collaborations (I wrote that originally as Collabortions - a freudian slip? :-). At over $31 each I would hesitate to pay that price. Wait till Cheap or What (www.cow.co.uk) or CDparadise (www.cdpradise.com) lists them to get a better price direct from the UK. People were having trouble getting to the later songs, and various troubles were being reported. So, I have edited the song list. I have removed: 1. Cover Verisons 2. Collaborations 3. Live Recordings 4. Rerecordings / Remixes 5. "Original Versions" (eg, half of The Plan) Exceptions: To 2: Stormtrooper In Drag, as Ive felt this was basically a Gary Numan song To 5: Original We Take Mystery which sounds like a completely different song Hopefully this will make things easier. Don't you want a say in what the digest's favourite album is? Moving on I think the views of least favourite Numan songs are a great idea. Here are mine 1. Emotion 2. The Need 3. Telekon 4. I have begun the mammoth task of listening to all the Numan I possess in between doing a programming assignment. I started with Tubeway Army, The Plan and Replicas and it reminded me of the 'I Nearly Married a Human' track, after all this time I still don't like it. I haven't listened to the B Side of Cars for some time, but I should imagine I still won't like "Asylum", it would make a good Horror film sound track though. I would like to say though that I like nearly all of Numan's music, when rating the first 3 Lp's I rated a lot of the tracks 1, mind you I have a way to go. I think with 6 tracks rated 1 on Replicas, Replicas may well be my favourite Lp. Well back to programming Sees ya Jean ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Oct 1998 14:09:23 -0330 From: "Doug Mair" <dougmair@travel-net.com> Subject: Valeriun - name game To: <numan@cs.uwp.edu> Just a quick note to all playing with "Valeriun" name source... He also mentioned something like..."so is The Pleasure Principle too synthy?" Well I can think of possible reasons why people don't like each Numan album (well, almost) The Plan - too punky Tubeway Army- too guitary Replicas- too sci-fi The Pleasure Principle- too 'antiseptic' Telekon - not all the best material was on the album Dance - too slow or ambient I, Assassin - too bassy Warriors - too saxy Berserker - well he looks stupid on the cover (can't think of anything musically :-) The Fury - too female vocally Strange Charm - no real character or feel Metal Rhythm - too 'synth-lite', all the songs sound the same (my father is guilty of this one) Outland - too dancey M+S - too poppy Sacrifice- too drum loopy Exile- too dark, dirgey, don't like the lyrics Don't get me wrong , some of these reasons are why I love the music, and others have lots of good points to cancel these out. Strange Charm may be disjoint, but there's only "The Need" that I dislike on it. (yes, I even like I Can't Stop !) Also, I have seen Outland and Machine+Soul been criticised for being "Non-Numan". Well imagine this: forget about everything Gary did up to and including Metal Rhythm, and Outland was his debut album (god I bet that's hard to imagine). now people liked this dance pop of his first two albums, although it won't have been particularly ground breaking. But when Sacrifice came out, it was nothing like his first two albums, being dark and religious, the people said "god, this is not like anyhing he's done before, it's so non Numan" Exile then came out and was more of the same. People all said "God, we want more old Numan stuff like Soul Protection or From Russia Infected".
