It's a 12" single by a band called Aircrash Bureau. "Exhibition" b/w "Machine" Zoth Ommog Label (no date but I acquired it 1994/95) "Machine" is actually "Steel and You"!!!! But NO credit is given to Gary Numan! They take full credit for the song (Published by ICM/Warner Chappel). Has anyone heard this song or this band? Actually very good, if you like Front 242. which I do, a lot. Did this cause any controversy with Gary? Zoth Ommog is a big German Industrial label so I doubt this went un-noticed. Cheers! Undoubtedly, BB has done the most incredible job at re-releasing the back catalog (I Assasin & Dance next _please!_). The remasters sound unf*ckingbelievable and were actually THE listening experience that convinced me that CD's could sound as good if not better than vinyl. THANK YOU BB!! Cleopatra's re-released some of Numan's least interesting albums imho, but I'm very pleased that somebody cares to do it at all, and above all else I'm very thankful to Cleopatra (or Rod, whoever) for their involvement in bringing Numan to the US. I never thought I'd see the man in a live show unless I crossed the ocean. Yeehaw! Yeah, they could do better with the art and with the mastering if you ask me, but they've turned on the whole US Goth crowd to Numan which is worth something (royalties in Gazza's pocket if nothing else, hee hee). - Scott -------------------- Scott Gibbons nomusic@mw.idsonline.com ADAM &-THE ANTZ <http://nomusic.interspeed.net/ants> LILITH <http://nomusic.interspeed.net> ORBITRONIK <http://nomusic.interspeed.net/orbitronik> STRAWBERRY <http://nomusic.interspeed.net/strawberry> ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 02:12:48 -0800 From: theartdept@att.net (rod reynolds) Subject: Cleopatra Ghost re-issue To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Date: Mon, 30 Nov 1998 12:10:30 -0600 From: Jeff Tolva <machman@interaccess.com> Subject: "Ghost" CD reissue??? >Does anyone know if Cleopatra has any intention of reissuing the double >live "Ghost" CD from the 1987 Exhibition tour? But this is not a case of completists moaning that they are having to spend a small fortune in buying all these releases. It is rather a fear that these releases will end up devaluing Gary's work. In the U.S Gary is starting to get some good press coverage. This will encourage people into the record shops to browse through the Numan section. The question is, at this stage, do we really want them to pick up The Fury or White Noise? Even if they are not put off by the cover art, will they be put off by the music when they get home? Wouldn't we rather, at this sensitive stage, that they be faced with a few quality releases (ie the BB re-releases, Exile, and Premier Hits)? Re-releasing endless albums and compilations is a short term strategy by Cleopatra to make money from existing fans. Sure, it satisfies *our* immediate needs, but it won't help GN attract new fans in the long run. And in the long run, that won't help us either. I used to own a hitrs album of Gary for a while in my early teens but (shame and horror) got rid of it as I thought it was crap. When Gary re-released Cars (premier version) I bought it again (always had a soft spot for that song) and saw that he was doing the tour and stopping in Nottingham at Rock City. 2 tickets later me and a mate were raving at the gig (and what a magnificant gig it was!!) and that was me seriously into Gary's music again. Finding the web site was like God smiling on me (for a change). I have also bought extended exile which I think is great, some of the new intros and music breaks are fantastic, however I can also relate too other members objections about the same. I must admit that it is crap how the extended version is only available through the fan club. I have a question to ask, I have just ordered Sacrifice (with the extra songs) from a company in America (no bugger of a shop admitted to hearing of it in England) - is this the extended version that everyone is talking about? In that case, why has WAG been stuck in to the middle of the album, rather than being a bonus track at the end like IDYD was? I also understand that on the US album release, IDYD was on the end of side 1 instead of "Sleep by Windows", so if there's any song should be stuck in the middle then surely it should be IDYD? (They also yelled at me for the incorrect track listing on the DD single - which wasn't my fault). I scanned it from my old cd (!!) as I don't have the vinyl lp. You will be happy (!?) to know that I secured the 12" vinyl pressing for the Berserker cover and the 12" singles so there's lots of non blurry pics for that release. Plus there's six or eight never before released concert photos from the Berserker tour in Australia (also not blurry). I initially presented several artwork concepts (some with a thematically consistent design among the re-issues) for the set as a whole to Cleopatra; they told me to maintain the original individual designs for the recognizability factor. I could have, for example, used the photo under the tray for the front, as I feel that is a stronger shot. I went with the original cd cover as opposed to the ('93?) Numa re-issue cover as I figured most fans would have the re-issue and not the original, which is fairly rare. (If you have the original cd check out the image quality - it's blurry!) Nobody (including Gary) likes the Fury artwork. At least I got rid of the dated slanted 80's font (although some obviously don't share my enthusiasm). In the Fury's case I presented 6 or 7 prototypes with different fonts and layouts; the one that appears in print was in fact chosen by committee. Gary himself saw this cd in it's mock-up form (I put it in his hand myself) and had no complaints. I was particularly nervous, as he designed the original artwork himself... My goal with the Fury artwork was to minimize the dated 80's-ness of it and suggest a classy Roxy Music / Roman empire mood, hence that particular font: upright, statuesque, pillar-like, although I really don't care for the capital N (too thin). While I'm also not particularly happy with the way the cover turned out, it's unlikely to end my career (at least it hasn't so far :o). It was a lot of work to get the I Still Remember 12" version onto the album, and most of the expense came out of my pocket just because I wanted it done. It didn't exist on cd at all, nor did the New Thing From London Town 12" version, and without me on this project those tracks would likely not be there. No one at Cleopatra was familiar with his material at all (which is where I came in). You saw what Gary did with the box set, which was the last hope for 'rarities'. The other bonus tracks were taken from the fan club only Babylon series and the 98 box set, and unless anyone comes up with any new suggestions (Gary vetoed all of mine) that's that. If you want all the bonus tracks in one place I suggest you seek out the 7 cd Babylon set (I did!). The concept of bonus tracks, YES, is to get you to buy the album even if you already have it. The late 80's cd boom is over. Record companies made a fortune when everyone replaced their vinyl and tapes with cd, but catalog sales have now dropped off, and they are trying to find ways of making us buy the catalog yet again (those of us who didn't fall for the mini disc plot) and are now re-issuing them with more artwork, theoretically higher sound quality and bonus tracks or multi-media. I have a sizable cd collection and yet find myself falling into the trap quite often; buying cds that I already have, just to get the goodies... "J. Mark Stanton" <xuvetyn@yahoo.com> writes: >On the subjective side, I've noticed poor type choices on all of your >Numan releases. The original artwork layouts from Cleopatra have also >been marginal at best. > Thank you for using the word 'subjective'. I honestly don't feel my original artwork concepts were 'marginal' and have in fact, had overwhelmingly positive reaction and support from the label, friends, colleagues and fans for both the Mix and Remodulate packages. The photos I used were from the Numan yearbooks and newsletters so I am quite sure Gary liked them. In fact, I did email him detailing the exact photos I wanted to use and he approved them. He furthermore chose one of my original concert photos from the Mix cd and tour poster to include in his Exile tour program, so apparently he appreciates my photography as well. I thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding my project, and while I am sincerely disappointed that not everyone is satisfied, I am also aware of the "you can please some of the people some of the time..." adage. I also encourage more feedback. After all, I don't stand in record stores and ask people what they think of that Gary Numan cd they just bought...
