I thought I was the only one around here. Of course, it runs a distant second to discovering that I wasn't the only Silly Wizard fan here, but hey! What can you do? I have odd taste ... I knew I was hooked on Numan from the opening synth line of 'This Wreckage' (the first song I ever heard ... bought Telekon on a hunch). Lord knows I generally avoid polls and lists of faves, but since I've spent my entire time (going on a couple of years now) on this list lurking, figured it was time to crawl out and put in my tuppence worth or so. Favorite Numan albums: Berserker, Telekon, Strange Charm, Replicas, The Fury (yeah, you heard me right, fanboy!) Songs: Replicas, AFE, DitP, Heart, IDYD, Like a Refugee, Angel Wars, Random, I Still Remember, Call Out the Dogs Favorite albums of all time (and here I show my real stripes): Marillion- Misplaced Childhood Willie Nelson-Across the Borderline Pet Shop Boys-Behavior Deacon Blue-Fellow Hoodlums Silly Wizard-Kiss the Tears Away Ultravox-Vienna Runrig-Amazing Things Marc Almond-Tenement Symphony Wolfstone-The Half Tail Nine Inch Nails-Pretty Hate Machine All right, I'm done now. "Well his early stuff got to good chart positions but since 1983 has struggled to get into the top 40" "Yes, but it's not that the standard of music dropped (IMO) but it just wasn't radio friendly" "No, it was obviously crap because people didn't want to buy it" "OK, think of Steps and Billie. They get good chart positions but are they any good ? " That shut him up :-) He also went on about how silly some of the song titles were. That's a reason why I was attracted to Numan in the first place. When I bought Telekon/ I, Assassin I showed another friend of mine the CD and a couple of weeks later he reeled off "We Are Glass" "I Dream of wires" "Remember I Was Vapour" "I Die: You Die" before I had a chance to get a word in edgeways! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 10:06:16 -0800 (PST) From: "J. By the way I finally got a copy of Crypt of Dawn #4 with the Gary Numan comic set to "Dark" and picture on back cover. What a brilliant comic! I haven't enjoyed a comic so much in ages, and it wasn't just the Numan stuff either. My thanks to Rob Horan and Sirius for an awesome comic. I've read a lot of the old Dawn comics years ago and I highly recommend them. As for the top ten list here it goes: (no order -- too difficult!) The Who - Quadrophenia Neds Atomic Dustbin - Are You Normal? The Smiths - self titled 1st album the Bodines - Played (this is not the U.S. band the Bodeans, The Bodines were a wonderful British band with only one album that I would give anything for to have on CD) Men Without Hats - Folk of the 80's p.III Utopia - Another Life (can't explain why) Sister of Mercy - First Last & Always OMD - Architecture & Morality Love & Rockets - Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven Wire - A Bell Is a Cup The 80's obviously had a big effect on me. There's no Numan because I, like others, just can't place him in with the rest of the mix. While were at this naming favorite things besides Numan -- Let's do it with your favorite top 5 bands besides Numan (or include him, but I think we all know where he ranks!). My fave bands are: The Wedding Present Wire Nick Cave & Bad Seeds Tom Waits Tindersticks Email me if you find yourself with oddly similar interests! One last note: the first Numan song that I fell in love with (other than those that got radio play), was M.E.. I am surprised that I rarely see it listed as a favorite Numan song. I am not sure if I would call it my favorite, but it would rank in the top 3 for sure. Oh well. As far as Numan albums, I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't heard them all...I've heard nothing after "I, Assassin" or before "Sacrifice." For what its worth, here they are! I also read on the wonderful "Outland" website, on the Tubeway Army album review that "Everyday I Die" should be called "Everday I Wank" :-) So does that mean we could have songs such as: Time To Wank I Wank : You Wank (or as Gary sings it in the way he does it could even be "I Wank, Your Wank" which is even more disgusting :-) ) or funniest of all- My Wanking Machine! Awesome cellos and unabashed New Yawk accent. Any band that writes a song making fun of those stupid De Beers diamond commercials gets my wholehearted approval. Europa - Covenant. Simply amazing industrial/techno/whatever, from the country that gave us ABBA. I swear they read R. M. Rilke's Duino Elegies before writing "Final Man." Different Stages - Rush. If they never tour again, I'll at least have this live triple album to console me. The art thing on the enhanced CD isn't all that thrilling, IMO, but if you're fond of recreational pharmaceuticals, you'd appreciate it. Get In - Kenickie. Dunno if it's been released Stateside yet, but it's wonderful. Damn shame they broke up. I blame it on the drummer's name change - Pete indeed. Britons beware, Lauren Laverne might just start hosting The Big Breakfast. Maybe she'd invite Numan! Methinks it's time for another CD binge... Moo! First of all, a big apologize, that I have forgotten to told you, that MACHINE & SOUL has a new URL. The new URL is: www.home.ins.de/~klaus.sauer/MachSoul. I hope that I found the time for a generally update, when I have my holiday in february. THE GARY NUMAN-FAN PROJECT: First of all, the Project has now the final name: PLAYING TO THE ALIENS. I have send a CD with the, in my opinion, best 17 Tracks to 8 independent record labels here in Germany and still wait for the results. Two of the labels work together with labels in the UK and the USA, so if they show interest to release the album, there are good chances, that the album will be in released in that countries too. I have a meeting with some people of one the labels in early february. The project has cost me meanwhile a lot of time and money (for example: I must pay for the german custom more than 300,-DM for a self-recorded CD with ONE track). I understand the impatience of some of the participants. But I'm not the one, who told the world "Hey the album is coming soon" if I don't have something in my hand. I have no problems, if the participants release their tracks via the internet, but don't forget to mentoin, that the rights of the tracks owned by NUMAN Music Ltd. or by Beggars Banquet. Okay, that's all for today. I hope that I have more news and an updated website in the middle of february. Draw your own conclusions as to what I mean.... ^_^ The song has great, er, "libidinous overtones" (then again, so did the original -- just a little more obvious to a Stupid Male American -- read as "me"). You MUST be joking!!! To be honest, I've really enjoyed reading people's other favourite albums, that was a great idea Matthew! It just shows how although we all have Numan in common, our other likes are way different, although Depeche Mode seem to been mentioned rather a lot. Interestingly enough, the DM album that Gary Numan likes best, "Songs of Faith and Devotion" is my least favourite by DM- there's only the song "Walikng in my Shoes" that I like on that album. Give me "Just Can't Get Enough" any day :-) Now for another fun/serious discussion topic. I am trying to convert one of my flatmates to Numan, and have lent him some CDs. I lent him Exile and there was only a couple of tracks he liked, but they were really good (I think they were Dead Heaven and The Angel Wars). I also lent him TPP and he liked it once he'd got over the fact that it was 'far too synthy'. But he really liked Berserker, apart from a couple of tracks with repetitive female vocals (guess which ones :-)) So the question is, if you were trying to convert a friend to Numan, which albums would you lend him/her ? Here are my choices: The Pleasure Principle (classic machine Numan-better than Replicas IMO and easier to get into than Telekon). Berserker (best of his mid-career) Sacrifice (start of his current sound, much more catchy and easier to get into than Exile , more immediate) If I had to choose a live album, it would be White Noise. I'd probably keep albums like Telekon and Dance that are a bit of an acquired taste until last. If you start them off on "Telekon" or "My Brother's Time", they may well be put off forever :-) Enjoy! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 02:12:44 +0300 From: "Peter Enright" Subject: random gibberish from Moscow To: "Digest Numan" Damn KGB agents found me and returned me to the land of the falling rouble. Anyone miss me? Oh well ... sniff. Some reactions to the last 20 or so Digest ravings: King Richard: you sold your Exile CD for $3? Man you MUST be hard up for cash .. Does anyone know what Gaz got from Santa? Does he believe in Santa? Just curious what our hero would receive. DIY stuff maybe? Underwear? Wonder what the family had for Xmas dinner. Sausages? Hey Axeman - great to hear that someone else skis with Numan in his ears! I just got back from 10 days in Spittal, Austria and had an absolute ball blasting down the slopes with Exile at full volume pounding inside my head. Makes those turns on the carving skis all the quicker! Oh, and to Benjamin; your ideas for scenes in possible video for "Angel Wars" were pretty cool, expensive, but provocative. Gary could certainly use another good video. One shot in Moscow would be cool (hint hint). But don't worry about it going out on Christmas Eve - in case you didn't know, Jesus was actually born around the beginning of September in about 5 A.D. I think from memory. The calendars were all screwed up, but there was a conjunction of planets around that time that was the likely cause of the "Star Of Bethlehem". Dec. 25 was just the old Pagan Winter Solstice festival that was replaced as Christmas Day by the Romans I think. ("What have the Romans given us?") All this Xmas celebration stuff is based on those Pagan traditions: the Christmas tree itself (an evergreen), the mistletoe (kissing under which is definitely not Christian), the burning of the Yule log etc. etc. Giving gifts and cards and all that nonsense is a much more recent addition. Not that I'm religious, but nowhere in the Bible does it say that we should celebrate the birthday of Jesus, in fact in those days only the birthdays of infamous people were remembered. So there you go - a bit of historical bollocks. G'day David Banks, liked your impassioned e-mail, and I bloody agree mate, it's about time Gaz got 'orf 'is arse and toured Down Under again. Heaps of fans? Dunno about that, but I'd like to be proved wrong. But strike me pink his May 1980 show in Sydney's Capitol Theatre was mega, just mega, I remember it like it was yesterday; cue swirly flashback effect. Everybody was dressed in black. 2JJ recorded the gig, wonder if it's still available? Numan did the best version of Replicas complete with these huge guitar slides, never ever heard that version since. But if he did return to the Great Southern Land, I know just where he should do the gig - the top of Ayers Rock, sorry Ulhuroo or whatever ... you know it's the bolt that stops Oz from flying off the planet don't you? Honest Guv. Rigi-didge mate. Fair dinkum. For what it's worth, I like EVERYTHING Gazza has ever recorded ... and I've tried barbequed iguana, it's quite good.
