To: NUMAN Digest I really wonder what happened to me. At first, I thought Exile was OK, but too repetitive. Then I grew into it and listened to it more and more. For over one year, it has always been in my car CD charger amongst 9 other discs. Then came Exile Extended, which in the beginning I found a bit too much, almost boring. Now, I still have 10 discs in the charger, but I start to wonder why I'm bothered to change the 9 other ones on a regular basis. this is because the only thing I do is listening to Exile, and I still can't get enough of it. Bingo! I did this--I made a 180-minute Numan Retrospective including two songs off of every album with a few exceptions (nothing off Warriors or Outland, and three off of Sacrifice and Exile) and lent it to a fellow I'm sort of dating. Now, this guy and I have **NOOOOTHIIIIING** in common except that we like to argue. Seriously--if we like the same album, it WILL turn out that the only songs he likes are the only ones I hate. Therefore it was worrying when he said he really enjoyed the tapes and bought Sacrifice. I just played Exile for him last night (predictably, he liked my favorites least and my least favorites best, though we both agree on "Absolution"--except I think it works well in context and he hasn't had a chance to absorb the context) and he's all hot on acquiring that, too. I'm immensely pleased. If he ends up being a Numanoid I might just marry him. The only other real-life Numanoid I know (who I *treasure* because *we* have a *lot* in common and we saw The Man together in Portland last year, and Only He Understands What It Really Meant To Me... and I can have discussions about Gary with him that I thought I'd never be able to have with anyone over the age of sixteen again!) is of the wrong sexual alignment to marry me. I always had a secret dream when I was a kid that I would find some folks somewhere that agreed with me that these songs and artists were far more interesting than anything my school mates were extolling as the "top" music. After I added recent favorites this list was about 60 albums long and I lost more hair trying to whittle it down to ten. So, If I were stranded on a desert island I'd think really hard about swimming for another shore because 10 just isn't enough. Especially without a Numan thrown in! They had Soulfly, Marilyn Manson and Hole. King Richard: I understand what you're saying about Sweet Dreams, after all the original is hypnotic. However, I saw Marilyn Manson do it at the big day out and I got a whole new interpretation out of the lyrics, especially "some of them want to use you some of them want to get used by you some of them want to abuse you some of them want to be abused" shouted very loud. Very interesting social commentary I think. Of course the way Manson was dressed adds to the new emphasis. A strong S&M connotation definately comes to mind. When Eurythmics sang it I knew the lyrics, but I hardly noticed what it could actually mean. Well I'm rather disturbed by the way my screen keeps going black, so I'm off. My name is Ian, I'm 28 & live between London & Brighton in the UK. I was never a 'Numan' fan when he was 'Top of the Pops' - in that early period I was more into Blondie, Ultraxov, Spandau Ballet etc.. In 1983 (aged 13) out of curiosity, went along to the Newcastle 'Warriors' conerct... what can I say... I was gob smacked! Ever since that day I've been hooked beyond belief. I got into the earlier stuff and from then on kept up to date with all of the new stuff - to this day. Every year I always went to the Newcastle gigs, until I was older & could go elswhere also... Manchester, York & London mainly. By 1994 I was into him even more than ever before... & living in London, so went to 70% of the Sacrafice tour, then 80% of the Premier tour & 90% of the Exile tour. I also got to see him in Paris & Brussles on last years Euro tour.. but alas not the US (yet!). My favourite albums are Sacrafice & Exile. I've alwasy liked Ultravox (their 'whole' period') and I love the Pet Shop Boys - apart from that I'm into many varied other kinds of music. I like clubbing in London & also love dance music too.. I am one of the seemingly few, who loved the Random 2 DJ remix tracks... & had several very proud occasions when they were played in some of my favourite clubs. ok - hope thats not too much detail.... speak/hear soonest! I really enjoyed conducting the poll ranking the Numan albums, and the idea came to me via the now famous King Richard's reply (Cheers, Richard ! ) Richard wanted to put in the live albums into his ranking. So I thought we could do a separate poll ranking the live albums. I'm hoping it generates as much interest as the studio album poll. I have decided to include "Live at the Roxy" because Ben Iglar-Mobley wanted to rank it into the previous poll, and also it represents a period of Gary's career that the other live albums don't take into account, even though I personally dislike it. Also, I reckoned Living Ornaments should count as two. We'll do LO '79 and LO '80/81. I only have 80 on vinyl, as I understand it's very rare on CD only as a deleted Japanese import with most of 79 on there as well. I doubt I could give it a "fair" ranking as a result. However, the double CD of the farewell concert was the substitute for the 80 tapes being lost, so we'll take 80 and 81 as the same album. To spice things up as well, I'd like you to specify which track on each one is your favourite, and we can conclude stuff from that, like which is the best version of AFE / Cars / DITP / IDYD etc. is the best. Please try to choose a different song for every live album. Picking AFE for each one wouldn't be very exciting. Model your answers on my vote which is as follows 1. White Noise (undoubtedly the best, has the most energy, "Berserker" is my favourite all-time live track) 2. Living Ornaments 81 (a historic Numan concert, "Metal") 3. Dark Light (great sound quality, rocks, "I'm An Agent") 4. Ghost (from my fave Numan period, and very good despite the silly cover, "Me! I Disconnect From You") 5. Living Ornaments 79 ("Cars") 6. Dream Corrosion (sound quality and cover let it down a bit, "Are Friends Electric?" ) 7. The Skin Mechanic (uninspiring track listing, "I Die: You Die") 8. Live at the Roxy (dislike this type of music, "Kill St Joy") If you don't have all of them , you can still vote, just rank the ones you do have, and I can incorporate them accordingly because 8 is a nice number to work with. Please send your votes to me, at James.Chapman@ncl.ac.uk , and not the digest although if you like you can send them to the digest as well as long as they reach me. Happy voting! There are, however, some lyrics I do not have and cannot get hold of, and this is where I need some help. Some of them I can probably work out myself, and some others I don't think anybody will have - but you could make an educated guess at some, even if you don't know them - me, I'm a bit burned out, having written this site by hand over the last 4 or 5 weeks (there are a *lot* of Numan songs...) Anyway - the list of songs which I have not done lyrics to is as follows - if you know, or want to make a guess at, any of these lyrics, I'd appreciate it if you could send them to me. In "Berserker", at around 5:02 on the box set version, there is a beep a bit like an alarm clock. Is this a sample, or just an extra sound like the talking on "My Centurion"? In "Tricks", after the line 'and she likes to scream', on the box set there is the sound of someone screaming, but on the 1996 Fury extended CD, it isn't there. Which is the proper version? I like those little things being included - they do so much given that they are only little things. Also, after reading Paddy Vickers' assessment of Strange Charm, I have the conclusion that the songs on this album, while very mixed could fall into one of three categories: A) My Breathing, The Sleeproom, This is Love, Time To Die (dark, slow, light on the female vocals, acoustic guitar) B) Unknown and Hostile, I Can't Stop, The Need (fairly industrial, electric guitar, fast, almost dancey, heavy on female vocal) C) New Thing From London Town (sticks out like a sore thumb, poppier) The title track falls in between A and B, it's a bit too fast to be in A, but not enough female vocal to be in B. It seems to me that Paddy loves A, but doesn't like B and C. Fair enough. I like all 3 categories. Some people may or may not like each category, but I belive they are linked. I get the impression that not too many like B and C. Of course that could be complete bollocks, but it's my opinion. Someone prove me wrong :-) Actually, I think the fact that NTFLT is excellent, but the only reason I can think of to criticise it is that it's a bit poppier than your average Numan song. If like me, it's upbeat 80s synth you're into, then I guess you would like this. If you're into darker stuff, or rock/punk, then you won't. Of course, that theory could be bollocks as well :-) James ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ****************************** _______________________________________________________________________ _____ ____ ____ _____ _____ / \ | | / \ / \ / \ / \ | |-----| |-----| | |-----| |-----| | | | G | | A | | | R | | Y | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |-----| |-----| | |-----| |-----| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | N | E | W | S |=====| | | | | | | | & | | | | | | | \_____/ I | N | F | O | | | | is produced and distributed by Derek Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, mail to: numan@cs.uwp.edu If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, you can mail to numan-request@cs.uwp.edu ----------------- The Gary Numan Digest is brought to you via Datta Production and Development, 905 97th Street, Kenosha, WI 53143 USA datta@cs.uwp.edu and computer resources courtesy of University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Datta Production and Development.
