Gary Numan Digest Sun, 7 Feb 99 Volume 1 : Issue 510 Today's Topics: Aimless Meanderings Explode Your Income / Business Opportunity Gary Numan Digest V1 #509 (2 msgs) hallo 'friends'. NTFLT Numan song poll and Goodbye Video formats What's happened? What happened ?? Yet another top ten list ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 14:50:08 -0000 From: "Simon Joseph" Subject: Aimless Meanderings To: "The Digest" I read some where yonks ago that the French word for orgasm means "little death" - every day I die. Maybe someone out there might be able to confirm this? Luc DE VISSCHER spoke about his addiction to Exile and is there any cure?..I think there is but Numan is still working on it, I hope. Richard Godsil asked what of numam 83-95 I think a few have already replied to this but a lot of people have almost dismissed this period, strange because some of the live shows were full of energy rather than heavily mood orientated, which I very much like too. The exhibition tour looked great and apart from the silly hair cut (I know unfair he never had much to play with in those days...I wonder what Glenn Hoddle would have said about that?), it was for me the best tour, maybe outland would also have been good but I only saw one of thoses as I had just got out of hospital after fracturing my spine in a car accident and I was in a lot of pain and did not appreciate it, but what I remember It looked amazing and he was well on form at Shefield. I`m just listening to Alien cure, what is he saying in the middle " seen my ?????" you know the bit he sings with a Welsh accent."see boyuo, see bbyeiii" Non Numan Top ten +1 (no order) Lou reed Newyork - any LP with "stick a fork in their ass.. turn em over their done" has got to be included. Sting 10 summoner`s tales - well I like it. John Coltrane Blue Train - Cool Sunday morning/blackcoffee/newspaper music Red Hot Chilly Peppers - Blood sugar sex magic - Play it loud, saves dusting the speakers David Sylvian Secrets of the beehive - saw him live a couple of times "great acoustically" Sheryl Crow Tuesday night music club - Will you marry me Sheryl?.... Well what about sex then? Tom waits Swordfishtrombones - Beck's predecessor Beck Odelay - Tom waits love child U2 Zooropa - could have chosen the Joshua tree but that does not have "dirty day" on it. Stina Nordenstam And she closed her eyes - I think this is the most disturbing LP I have ever heard. I love it, funny thing is it being in the "N" section in music stores I kept seeing it and eventually bought it out of curiosity. Its a gem. Jimi Hendrix Experience Axis:bold as love - little wing , what a track. I always thought my dad was dead uncool, because he is, but then we were talking about music, I was around 20 just about the time you start exploring different eras, and Hendrix came up, my new find! He told me he saw him before he made it in a little pub, in Brixton I think. He was right at the front and had to duck when he trashed the guitar. I was distraught that my discovery was in fact not my discovery! Some time latter I spoke to my uncle, again Hendrix cropped up and he told me he saw him at the Is. of Wight. Funny thing envy, its much more powerful when its closer to home. Taking of closer to home I live about 16 miles away from Nottingham, what an inconvenience for the forth coming one off gig-)))) see you at the bar. Some of our gay and lesbian numan fans sign off with the line "proud member of boys like us" well something which groups all of us Numan fans would be: Cheers Simon Joseph A proud member of "no fucker likes us" I think I turned MIME off, I thought I had before . To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hallo Hallo Gazza Fans! My name is Craig, and I've just joined the mailing list. I live in Boston, and I have been a devout Numan obsessive since I found a second-hand vinyl copy of "Replicas" at my favorite record shop. This was about two years ago [I'm 23 this valentine's day}, and since then I've had to own as much by the great man as I could find. My favorite Numan album changes from time to time, but the usual top five are "Dance", "Telekon", "Exile", "The Pleasure Principle", and "Replicas". I've been reading in the past entries of digest members about the qualities of different eras, so let me just say that I really love all of the albums with the exception of about half the "Machine and Soul" album, and I initially hated "Warriors", but I enjoy it now - well, it got stolen, so I'm waiting for a reissue {does anyone know about the rest of the Beggars albums?}. Also, what does everyone have against "Strange Charm"? I dig that record - especially "I Can't Stop" - I love that song, but probably because it's infuriating. so.....other interests - I am a DJ {I am what I play}, and I have two nights a week at a bar in Allston MA called O'brien's. My nights? - "TRASH" - glam, new wave, new romantic, darkwave {whatever the hell that is supposed to be}, and more, pop lovers. Basically, I play Numan, Bowie, Iggy, T-REX, Visage, Duran, and others of the same persuasion. I play drums, guitar, keyboards, and bass, as well as singing, writing and producing my own music {only on 4-track at the moment, but that will change}. My project is called "CANDIDATE", so vote for me if you will. I had the great pleasure of being 3 people deep from the stage for Gary's show in Cambridge last year, and then meeting the exceptionally kind and generous man after the show. There was a line of people at least a hundred strong, and Gary took time for each and everyone of us. Then, after I babbled at him for five-odd minutes{well, I wasn't that bad, but I certainly was goofed up}, he accepted my first "album" - he's one of ten people it was given to, and no-one else asked - he signed the lyric for "Jo The Waiter", and looked confused when I complemented his kindness towards his fans. I know I went on and on with this one, but we're just getting to know each other. Remember Andy Kaufman. If anyone wants more info about me, my music, or my DJ nights, let me know...........jothewaiter@hotmail.com Love, Craig ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 18:05:30 -0800 From: Jason Borchers Subject: NTFLT To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I keep hearing about how everyone absolutely hates "New Thing From London Town" (except for James Chapman). I've only heard the 12" remix on the Remodulate compilation -- is the Strange Charm album version really different? After hearing the 12" version, I just can't imagine how anyone could hate this song. I think it fits in perfectly with other synth music that I like -- e.g. the Blade Runner soundtrack. NTFLT always reminds me of BR. Also, James Chapman wrote: >Actually, I think the fact that NTFLT is excellent, but the only >reason I can think of to criticise it is that it's a bit poppier than >your average Numan song. I don't know, it always seemed kind of dark to me. -- Jason Borchers jasonmb@calweb.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Feb 1999 10:05:28 +0000 From: Andy McHaffie Subject: Numan song poll and Goodbye To: Gary Numan Well I guess the song poll is now finished. 30 people have submitted their faves and no one new has voted recently, so the final results are: 1. It's been a great few years on here, and Matt n Phil, can I rely on you to give me a call when the next album / tour is due ? Its been great meeting a lot of you in person, and getting to know all the other "Boys Like Me" As gary says during Please Push no More (live'81) "I'll miss you" Andy McHaffie -- http://www.joekeith.dircon.co.uk/mouthfull.html -- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Feb 1999 11:14:24 GMT0BST From: "James Chapman" Subject: Video formats To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I'm thinking of purchasing the Dream Corrosion and Shadow Man videos from NuWorld. I don't know what PAL and NTSC formats are, can anyone tell me which is which? I need the one that's like a normal VHS videotape. While we're on the subject, I'm also after the Micromusic, Newman Numan, and Skin Mechanic videos. Anyone know where I can get one? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Feb 1999 11:49:39 GMT0BST From: "James Chapman" Subject: What's happened? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Heck, why was that last digest so small? If it hadn't have been for my triple contribution, we'd have hardly had a digest. I can see not many interested in my live album poll - I've only received ONE VOTE! So I'll try to start the ball rolling on something else. I love how some of these discussions/arguments start out about something, and drift into something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, like the singles that never were drifting into whether or not "This Wreckage" was a load of shite, and that in turn drifting into whether "Telekon" was shite! The current one (I think) started when King Richard announced he hated Exile, and loads of people slagged him off, calling him "not a fan", and Richard rebuffing the statement by saying "well in that case all you lot who hate Machine + Soul aren't fans either", and then people defended M+S not being as bad as it's made out to be, and someone said that if there was any album that was shite, then it was Strange Charm, and me and a few others defended that, and others said it was incoherent, which is where we stand now. And somewhere along the way Replicas was discussed quite a bit as well but I've forgotten the source of that. Anyway, I'm rambling. What I thought about this incoherent thing was - has nobody thought that Dance is incoherent? I know a lot more people love Dance than Strange Charm, but I think of Dance as the most incoherent Numan album (possibly except M+S). The first four tracks all have rather ambient feeling with some great bass playing IMO. I don't think I've really got "Cry, the Clock Said" - I LOVE the second half where Gary is singing, but the first five minutes bore the hell out of me. Unless I'm listening to it in the dark, of course. But it seems to me an album of two halves. The second half seems completely different. "Crash", and "You Are, You Are" seem like leftovers from the up-tempo Telekon tracks, even though I really like them. "Moral" is just an old track reworked and isn't as good, "My Brothers Time" is an awful dirge, "Boys Like Me" has the edge taken off it by that stupid seductive woman, and "She's Got Claws" and "Stories" are pretty good but share little in common with the first four tracks. Saying that I am really looking forward to the reissue (but not as much as I, Assassin), and I like it all, with the exception of "My Brother's Time" which leaves me cold and makes my finger go for the skip button. It's one of the few tracks which affect me in a negative way. About 98% of the stuff Gary has put out affects me is a positive way- to a lesser or greater degree, so the criticism is all relative. And why hasn't there been much of this album and I, Assassin live? Jmaes ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Feb 1999 12:10:19 GMT0BST From: "James Chapman" Subject: What happened ?? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Sorry, for slagging off the last digest for being small, I now know that either all the regulars were busy on the AFE Bulletin Board to slag off the asshole whole infected everyone's computers with that virus, or couldn't write anything due to the virus. Having to use University computers that never download anything, I never had the problem and so was one of the few people fully "active" :-).
