To: "Digest Numan" It's Sunday morning, there's a snowstorm raging outside, and I have a steaming mug of coffee, so it's a good time to add my 10 roubles worth to the absolutely rivetting Digest. God I can't get enough of this ... In the last Digest astute Numanite Simon Joseph remarked "I'm just listening to "An Alien Cure", what is he saying in the middle " seen my?????" you know the bit he sings with a Welsh accent. "see boyuo, see bbyeiii" Thanks for reminding me Simone, I've also been trying to figure out what these lyrics are, they're not mentioned on the CD notes. Does anybody know? The second line sounds very much like "See my eyes." Incidentally, you have an interesting interpretation of "Every Day I Die". I prefer to think that refers to sleep, those "little slices of death". Now who said that? And to James Chapman, there are basically two TV systems but many tape formats. NTSC (National Television Standards Committee, although many people swear it stands for Never The Same Colour) is the inferior American system, the first one to gain acceptance, then along came good old PAL (Phase Alternating Line) the most popular system and adopted by the UK, Australia, NZ, Europe (apart from France and some others who use SECAM, a derivative of PAL, and then there's MESECAM another hybrid used by some Mediterranean countries I am led to believe), Russia and the rest of the civilised world. All of these systems can be recorded on VHS tape. In other words, you need a PAL VHS tape to enjoy Gaz in his true colour, which varies considerably according the gigs ... And while we're on the subject, let us not forget that it was a Scotsman who invented TV. Moving right along now, I managed to view the Dominion day video on this tiny Windows media Player screen, and I'm not impressed sad to say. As a previous director of music videos which have won awards, I feel that I have the right to sound off my opinion: it sucks. It has no real concept, or the kind of visuals that do the song the justice it richly deserves. In fact it looks rather like an MTV style film student "flash-cut-any-picture-to-the-music-video-and-make-sure-ther e's-a-babe-in-there-somewhere" style of production. If Gary is reading this, which he probably isn't, for God's sake (oops) find a director with a good storyline first. Search your fan base for those with the relevant experience. Better still, come to Moscow and I'll shoot and edit a video here that will knock your socks off - for free. Well maybe 10 roubles ... TikTokMan, Moscow A proud member of "Persons Like Us" ... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Feb 1999 02:12:13 -0800 From: newcombg4@mindspring.com Subject: Dance To: "Gary Numan" I don't really understand how a comparison of Dance and Strange Charm came up! Yes, Dance is better than Strange Charm. IMHO, Dance is Numan's best album, and though I thoroughly enjoy Strange Charm, it isn't even in my Numan top ten. (In fact, I consider the albums up to Dance, including "The Plan", to be a different breed than all the subsequent albums, and I like the first breed better, so the first five albums plus The Plan are automatically my top six Numan albums.) I think of Dance as a major breakthrough for Numan, a lot of Numan trademarks appear for the first time on this album, for example the doppler-type sounds, and the glossolalic, lyric defying singing. As to the "incoherency", remember that Dance was originally an LP, with the four "ambient" tracks being side one and the rest side two. A lot of all-time great albums are also "incoherent" in this sense, like Bowie's Heroes and Low, and Remain in Light, by the Talking Heads. All of these albums, including Dance, manage to make a coherent statement somehow paradoxically because of the stylistic differences between the two sides. The track sequencing on CDs, particularly in the case of Dance, tends to destroy the album as a complete statement by the inclusion of bonus tracks and the omission of album tracks. Like I've said in a previous digest, I don't see any cosmic significance in the use of the same song formula for Moral as Metal, I think of the songs completely separately. But if I had to choose never to hear one again it would have to be Metal. Moral is a great, powerful song, perfectly balancing structure and improvisation, perhaps the very best album closing song Numan has ever done. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Feb 1999 09:56:12 EST From: Construkt1@aol.com Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #510 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In a message dated 2/7/99 3:09:20 AM Eastern Standard Time, numan@cs.uwp.edu writes: << I read some where yonks ago that the French word for orgasm means "little death" - every day I die. A little intro to me, and a few replies/comments/observations/aimless bilge/whatever... So, to start off with, the intro: "I'm VinceH and I'm a Numan fan." There. That'll be enough of that... :-) What? You want more? Grr... okay then. Briefly, I'm 30 years old - but only for another 7 days; Valentine's day is the switch. I victimise Bristol (UK) with my presence. I've been a Numan fan since late 84/early 85 - only very minor at first, but the more I heard of his stuff, the more I had to hear of his stuff, as the addiction set in. Other stuff I like? well, I'm a weird case, in that I like *music* full stop; even if I say I don't like something, it really just means I don't like it as much as I like other stuff. IYSWIM. I have started to put together my own Numan site, but atm it is nothing more than the first half of one section (how/why I became a fan) and is just gathering dust on my HD. Two reasons; 1: I am very busy atm, and 2: I can't think of any /original/ sections to include on the site - It has all been done already! (Actually, I do have one (count it) ideas, but I'll keep it under wraps until (and if!) I can put it together :-) That site'll be called "Forsaken" ("That's my theme tune") and will live at http://www.forsaken.clara.net/numan/ when its done. So you'll be able to click on that link in about 10 years time, then... (Hmm.. drop the numan from the end and there /is/ something on the site... a rather "nice" picture of me :-) Okay, now that really *will* be enough of that. Replies and stuff, now... Simon Joseph asks:- > I`m just listening to Alien cure, what is he saying in the middle " > seen my ?????" My guess is "See my awe? See my eye." The latter three words seem to work in a "Yeah, in yer dreams son" or "When hell freezes over" context & fits in with the tone of the album. Oh gosh, look - a spam was next. How nice. James Chapman & Jason Borchers have both said:- Words to the effect of "I *like* NTfLT" Yup. You aren't alone. James Chapman wrote:- > What I thought about this incoherent thing was - has nobody thought > that Dance is incoherent? Dance has its own consistency throughout, in terms of the music (but some tracks - eg SgC - stand out phenominally from the rest so as to make that inconsistency hard to see. How I would describe it is as the /least accessible/ of the Numan albums. I am certainly glad that it wasn't one of the first/earlier ones that I bought because it might well have been enough to put me off Numan[1] - and had that happened, I'd have missed Sacrifice and Exile. EEEEEEK!!! [1] So a little expansion is required on what I said above about liking all music; I wasn't always like that, and to be honest, I reckon Numan is to thank for my overall appretation of music; first because of the way his own music has varied, and secondly by giving stuff he's mentioned (and people he's worked with) a listen, and so on and so forth. Good example: Trois Gymnopedies is my favorite piece of music of all time; and I don't mean the Numan version :-) It's an absolutely beautiful piece when played on a piano. > I don't think I've really got "Cry, the Clock Said" - I LOVE the > second half where Gary is singing, but the first five minutes bore > the hell out of me. Unless I'm listening to it in the dark, of > course. I agree totally - I'd add that I could hardly listen to it at all on vinyl, due to the slight background noise; it was an old 2nd hand copy, after all. It is much easier, I find, on CD. > "My Brothers Time" is an awful dirge, Hmm.. I think I'd have to say that's my favorite track on Dance! > Saying that [...] I like it all, Ditto. Onto more general discussions; top 10 non Numan albums? Umm. I don't think it'd be possible for me to compile such a list. I have *soooo* many records & cds, it'd be impossible to make any valid choices - my top 10 from one week to the next will vary with mood, as well as memory; stuff I've recently heard would be freshest in mind, so likely to be included. The poll of fsvorite live albums? Umm... think I'll have to dig all the ones out and listen to them (what an excellent excuse :-) before I make my choices known. So which piles would they be in..? :-( Oh.. as I scan through digest 509, I see:- James Chapman (gosh you pop up a lot! :-) says:- >In "Tricks", after the line 'and she likes to scream', on the box set >there is the sound of someone screaming, but on the 1996 Fury >extended CD, it isn't there. Which is the proper version? The scream is present on the original LP, iirc. >I like those little things being included - they do so much given >that they are only little things. Indeed. That'll have been the backing vocalist, of course (I guess) but another thing which works in a similar way are sound samples; he used a lot (or rather "a *LOT*") on Outland, for example, and I reckon they add a whole different layer of atmosphere to the album. I wonder how it would have sounded without them... Ah well, that'll do. I now know I need PAL which is apparently the superior. Seems rather odd as PAL and NTSC are the same price. It's odd how I get several responses to some questions and none to others! It doesn't seem as though people are very interested in ranking the live albums - since I gave the idea two digests ago I've only had 2 responses. I don't know why this is - for the studio album poll my mailbox was flooded for a week or so after I launched the poll. Another thing about live albums, is aren't we due another one? It's been 4 years since the last one which is about the norm for gaps between live albums. I believe there was one of the concerts from the US tour recorded so how about that being released, Rod? I have a bootleg from the US tour, and I reckon it could be one of the best live albums if it's mixed properly. It probably wouldn't be as good as "White Noise" though :-) James ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Feb 1999 08:27:37 PST From: "Craig MacNeil" Subject: new email address, berserker, and 'stories' To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hallo again! I would greatly appreciate it if the digest could be sent to my new/actual address - jothewaiter@hotmail.com I know that previous messages have gone out differently, but I share a computer with family. Lovely lovely, alright then...... A question regarding the blue-and-white wonder we know as "Berserker". First off, it appears that no-one has a lukewarm reaction to this album - at least not to the image. When I first found it, I knew nothing about it, NUMA, sax players, or female singers in the Numan saga, so I was rather wary, but fascinated by the image. After I started taking chances {buying totally unfamiliar, expensive imports], and enjoying the ridicule of my friend at the record store {who I found out later secretly snagged all the recent reissues when they came out}, I baecame quickly obsessed with "Berserker". I can begin to explain why, but since you are reading this {you obsessives}, I have a suspicion you understand. Anyway, to make a long story longer and longer, I held out on buying it in favor of the beggar's banquet 2disc-sets. Then something horrible happenned. Someone bought it. But, thankfully, since the store in question was Newbury Comics, they had a box of "Berserker", "The fury", and "Strange Charm" always at the ready {well that's how it seemed} SO - now the point {well, nearly}: I finally departed with the 33 dollars {I'm not cheap, but I'm often broke, so I'm not bitchin about the price. My good friend Marky has an admirable saying that I like to use to make myself feel better from time to time "MONEY IS FOR RECORDS". Come on everybody, repeat after me...} And then I went to work - a coffee shop called FUEL, no longer in existence, where everyone heard at least 2 hours of Numan a day. I am rather proud of the number of people that ended up buying Numan after repeated {albeit mildy enforced} listening at the cafe. So, when I put it on, I enjoyed it, but I was also confused by the overall style {st first}, and also tried to figure out why a single album was so long. Didn't this come out on one lp? Why does it say 1991 on the back, and other mysteries. Now, after reading various past entries of the digest [where there was a lengthy debate about bootlegging 'everyone's-favorite album-to-obsess-over-without-really- knowing-why]ANOTHER question came up. Since I have a copy of "berserker" that {on the back} says NUMACD 1001, dated 1991, and distributed by Pinnacle Records, the inner booklet has lyrics, credits, and nothing else.......What issue of the album do I own? Also, all the extended tracks are extended, so if that helps.... One other thing {two actually} about this album.... Where can I see the original lp artwork? And Where can I get a copy on vinyl? I have the US lp's for "Replicas" through "I Assasin", "Outland", and "Metal Rhythm", but I would like to fill in the gaps. To reply to the person about "Dance" being incoherent, I just listened to it again, and although I can see your point, I always feel moved listening from back to front, because it all has some kind of thread running through - I can't say what, but I can feel it. Also, wouldn't it drive you nuts if all the tunes were like "you are you are" or "moral"? Anyway, let me sign off by saying that one of my favorite songs of all is "stories". A jaw-dropper the first time I heard it - unlike most of "Dance", which really didn't do much for me the first couple spins, but which now hovers at the top o' my list. Did anyone read this whole entry? Good Lord, you folks are alright Off for my afternoon tea Love, Craig p.s. - I have been designing a drink {an alcoholic one I'm afraid} called "The Berserker". It invoves vanilla Stoli, and Blue Curaco - when i iron everything out i'll post the recipe. current favorite song - "A Child With The Ghost". ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Feb 1999 14:26:40 -0800 From: theartdept@att.net (rod reynolds) Subject: New Thing From London Town To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello. New Thing From London Town 12" version has completely different lyrics/ vocals from the album version. Aside from that, it is the same, and in fact may share the same music track. Can anyone confirm this, or was the track completely re-recorded for the album. Assuming Gary didn't like the lyrics for the 12" (and single/video) version, he chose to re-write them. Or did he have a falling out with Bill Sharpe and not want to give him any royalties?!! (Which would explain why he has never put it on cd.) Anyone with the true story (or rumours, if that's all we have) please fill us in!! In his book he says he was disappointed with the (lack of ) success of the single. He must have liked it at some point. The upcoming Cleopatra re-issue of Stange Charm has both the album version and the 12" version. It will be out in a few months in North America. I doubt the Eagle re-issue will have the 12" mix, unless Gary nicks it from Remodulate (LOL)!! Speaking of Blade Runner (my all-time favorite movie btw), a friend of mine worked on that film in the art department. He said that they listened to a lot of Numan music while they were working on the sets. Gary obviously liked the film, and chose to sample lines from the soundtrack and inspiration for costuming (Warriors?). When Gary was here in LA my friend mentioned this to him; Gary was quite interested so my friend gave him a copy of the Making of Blade Runner book "Future Noir". I know he mentions the film in Praying to the Aliens but I can't find the exact spot! I've only heard the 12" remix on the >Remodulate compilation -- is the Strange Charm album version really >different? Oh yes, it's very different. The 12" version is fantastic, the album version is merely good. Does anybody remember the review Smash Hits gave NTFLT? - they reviewed the 12" version, and gave it Single of the Fortnight. I love the laughing at the beginning of the track, I love the lyrics. And I am not a lover of bright and breezy pop (unless I'm really drunk and Abba comes on, in wich case I dance like a mad thing... but then, those of you who know me will probably recall that I am slightly... perky) But, yeah. The 12" remix of New Thing is one of my all time favourites. I'm not as keen on the 7" mix or the album version. Completely different. Then James Chapman asked > I'm thinking of purchasing the Dream Corrosion and Shadow Man >videos from NuWorld. I don't know what PAL and NTSC formats are, can >anyone tell me which is which? Both are like normal VHS tapes, but unless you have a video which can play both, I'd check your video manual if you are not sure. PAL is the standard for the UK, that much I know for sure. James also added - >What I thought about this incoherent thing was - has nobody thought >that Dance is incoherent? I always thought Dance was fantastic, myself. I like side 1 the best, and I *love* Cry, the clock said, that song is hypnotic. 'There's nothing much to keep us alive but "Dance"' is a great line. I do think as a whole, 'dance' isn't incoherant, every song on there sounds like a 'Dance' song. What's the problem with 'My Brother's Time?' I like that one, but then, 'Dance' is, to me, one of the best. And Connie Filapello's vocal on 'Boys Like Me' is wonderful. This is a CD ROM magazine that includes a telephone interview with Gary and the entire "Dominion Day" video, as well as a link to NuWorld. The interview is "old news" to regular fans, but should be interesting to "Nubies". I was happy with hearing his voice for the first time. Also includes interviews w/ Midnight Oil, Madonna, and The Killjoys + more. MUSICVIDEOS.COM has "Dominion Day" available for on-line viewing, I guess you could save it if you really want to. This was the first time I had ever seen the video...I like it. Now since I've been silent for almost 2 years, some info about me, music, & more: I started listening to Gary Numan in the late 70's /early 80's while still in high school. I had already dug Sci-Fi related books/movies and thought Numan was/is Sci-Fi music. Seeing him on the Tele-tour confirmed that thought. I've been a fan since, and really regret that I missed the US tour due to lack of $$$. My wife and I had just bought our first house, and I had recently started a new job...so taking a weekend trip to Cleveland just would not work. Perhaps next time. Useless info about myself: I am in my mid-30's (but look/act younger), married, 3 cats, 1 dog, 2 cars, 2 PCs, too many records, cassettes, CDs, videos, books. I manage an independent record store and volunteer as a radio DJ on the community radio station WAIF-FM. I record my own electronic music & sounds in my small home studio. I used to publish a local music zine, and write a weekly music column for a Cincinnati newspaper. Now I am learning about HTML and hope to start a web-radio station one day. Anyone who records their own music is encouraged to get in touch so I can play your music on my radio program. Nobody messes with "Dance". >What I thought about this incoherent thing was - has nobody thought >that Dance is incoherent? The horrifying revelation that I've had about what is by far my favorite Numan album..period, is that he's right. I originally bought this album on vinyl about 17 years ago and listened to it constantly for a couple of years. As that time wore on I found myself rarely flipping the album over...just listening to "Slowcar to China", "Night Talk" (surprised to find that Gary played the bass on that one!), "A Subway Called You" and "Cry the Clock Said"...over and over and over...getting lost in those tracks. I have to disagree with James' assessment of "Cry the Clock Said"....next to Slowcar it's the best song on the album. I do understand his statement that it almost seems the album is two separate halves. But I've been very pleased to see it at the top of some people's album list. (Can we get Mick Karn back on a Numan recording?....probably not...Gary's in a different place now...but it was great then and now) Seeing Gary in Detroit for his I, Assassin tour, I waited for my favorite Dance tracks in vain (still had a great time though). Today, all these years later, my two CD copies of "Dance" are never very far from a CD player. The only other album that's even close to that is David Sylvian's "Gone to Earth". Speaking of other albums, I might as well tag my list on here before I disappear back into the ether. 10 Non-Numan (no order...or make up your own) David Sylvian - Gone to Earth - Secrets of the Beehive - Damage (Live w/ Robert Fripp) Loreena McKennit - The Book of Secrets Dead Can Dance - Toward the Within The The - Blue Soul Mining Gipsy Kings - Tierra Gitana Bob Mould - Workbook Peter Murphy - Holy Smoke The Hot Moon - Mask As he crawls away.....
