Does anyone have this?...or know for a fact that it exists? I hope so.....because it would mean I would have a complete Numan on vinyl collection. Cheers! David a.k.a. At least I know The World Wide Webb will still be up when it's my rather interesting choice for Song of the Week :-) I have also now got Sunday's digest so if you were going to send me it, don't bother. The main part of my message is to comment on the new Eagle reissues of The Numa albums. I went down to HMV and Virgin at lunchtime to look at them, and the track listing is exactly the same as the box set , which means I won't be buying them on the reason there's new music (maybe there's the odd different version ?). The artwork: Berserker has exactly the same front cover as before (and very nice it is, too), but the back is just a white background with Gary's eyes, and the track listing below. The Fury has a slightly different photo and uses Exile-type font which I reckon doesn't work very well- imagine Exile using Fury-type font :-). The back cover is similar to Berserker in that it uses the same font. Strange Charm is- er...rather blue! Although the red font is replaced by white, and the back uses that same style of font as the other two. Machine+Soul has a *MUCH* better photo than the original and the back cover is the only one to use a different font from the rest. The photo of Gary on the back looks a lot like the one on the insert of the Skin Mechanic CD for some reason! Sacrifice looks the same cover as the original on the front, and the back isn't all that different from the others. All the spines look the same- with the exception that some are white, some dark. It seems to me like if you have the box set, these are total rehash. I shall not be buying them because I'm not a completist and I have The Numa Years. Unless I hear opinions of the sound quality being vastly improved (I'd like to know). Only M+S looks better than the original. I would have liked to read the liner notes but I couldn't since they were all wrapped in cellophane. I suspect they're the same as the box set. James ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Feb 1999 08:58:00 GMT0BST From: "James Chapman" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #514 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In #514, Mike Purvis asked about Time To Die: > > The track isn't on the issue of the CD I have (CDNUMA 1005). > > Q1: Which issue of the album (CD ?) is it on? > It was on the original release of the Strange Charm cassette, but not the LP or the CD, I can understand it not being on the LP due to time constraints, but why leave it off the CD? You can fit over 70 mins. on to a CD. The 1996 reissue also didn't include it. It was on CD in The Numa Years box set, but at track 11, and may be on The Cleopatra reissue as well. > Q2: What are the differences between the B-side and album > versions? > None as far as I'm aware, although the 7" B-side is a bit shorter I think (I haven't heard it so I can't confirm this). I am lecturing on orchids of all things! (I am also speaking at the World Orchid Conference in Vancouver late April). I will be visiting the following cities Los Angeles, San Diago, San Francisco, Sacremento, Miami, New Orleans, Washington, New York, Philadelphia, Vancouver and Mt. St. Helens (yes really - I love volcanoes) I am really looking forward to meeting an email friend (sounds a bit obscure!) in Palo Alto! Please e-mail me direct if you may be interested. I've been under the spell of Numan music for two decades. That's a big slice of my life, since I am almost 34 and a widower. (I lost my wife to skin cancer at the very end of 1994, Jannine was only 27). I figured someone else might have one of these which is why I didn't post an answer to the earlier question - I was out of town and am now just catching up on my email. I have a copy of "Gary Numan Songbook Vol.1" #1-2-50763 Published by Chappell Music, London, 1982. It has sheet music for 27 songs from the first 2 albums. I bought it in London in June of 1982. I have no idea if it is still available. And I have never seen a Vol.2. My suggestion is trying a used book dealer who specializes in music...if it was published, chances are that one can be found somewhere. Lisa PS - Dance is one of my favorite albums. When it came out I really liked the change of tempo...after Telekon anything else in the same vein might have sounded weak. I loved the fact that Gary stretched himself and went in another direction - and I still have my pinstripe double-breasted suit and fedora. ;-) ________________________ obscure@blueneptune.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 17:34:03 EST From: BaiHat@aol.com Subject: NUMAN VIDEO FOR SALE !! The prostitutes are all male in this world and the only form of release for them was to be found in the act of dancing. Kind of like the opposite of that movie The Handmaid's Tale. So, he's a tarted up little guy on the cover, with exaggerated pancake makeup, trying to look winsome. With this general concept in my mind, it seemed to me that My Brother's Time was about a sibling tag team and one client as opposed to two male siblings sharing a female hooker. It wouldn't surprise me if this is the case, 'cuz GN likes to invert cliches every now and then. Slowboat to China could be about one of these guys feeling sick that he's actually developed a crush on a trick. Etc. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Feb 1999 19:47:08 EST From: Hopey77@aol.com Subject: Shout out to Numanoids in LA/San Fran/Vegas! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I am finally going on vacation to Vegas & CA next month. Any Numanoids out there? Can someone send me a list of cool places that aren't tourist traps - off the beaten path? I shall be there March 13-21. Been lurking a lot. The topic of the "let's bash the graphic artist Rod" really ticked me off as I am one as well stuck in a crazy advertising dept. and I know from experience that time and money can account for the way work turns out. I think he's got a dream job and I would put up with that crap to fulfill a life-long dream. I'm with ya Rod. Fave artists besides Numan? The Damned, Buzzcocks, Ultravox, Visage, lots of Oi bands, Jam, Siouxsie, fifties rockabilly, Mozart, Servotron/Man or Astroman?, Bomboras, Go-Gos, Peggy Lee, Bauhaus, This Mortal Coil, Tones on Tail, Pogues, Kraftwerk, T Rex, Billie Holiday, Kiss, MC5, Alice Cooper, Depeche Mode, etc. It runs the gammut... My fave obsessive Numan song of late? "Observer" off of TTP. It's short and simple and that little "jammy" feel to it really appeals to me. I play it before i go out on weekends. Hope to hear from Cali Numanoids- Hopey ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 22:23:09 -0800 From: David Banks Subject: Slowcar to Sydney To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I wonder if Gary will keep his promise of returning to Sydney for a concert or two. There has been so much talk of late about "Slowcar to China" and "Cry, The Clock Said". Sadly there is a line in the later; "...just slide out of Sydney and I could never go back." Does this mean that GN has abandoned Australia (or at least Sydney)????? I think the length of "Slowcar to China" and "Cry, The Clock Said" add to the atmosphere of both songs. There are no other songs quite like them. If the song is good, I don't care how long it goes for. "Autobahn" by Kraftwerk goes for 22 minutes!) I particularly like the GN extended versions of "Change Your Mind", "New Thing From London Town", "My Dying Machine" (the version off "New Anger" - the US version of "Metal Rhythm", "Machine and Soul", "A Seed of a Lie" and "A Question of Faith" (I love the 'chant' that goes with this - "I'll be your darkness in the light.............") So what are your favourite GN extended mixes???? David Banks.
