A few thns today. First off, these reissues. Anybody know the difference between the Eagle and Cleoptra versions? One reason I'm asking is that the only studio-album reissues on Cleoplatra that I've seen {but I haven't been out to the shops for at least a month now} are "Sacrifice" and "The Fury". Also, I saw these at least two months ago, along with the "Dark Light" reissue. And, has anybody else having trouble accessing the "Are Friends Electic?" site? Every time I try it says something about not being able to connect with the server. Now, to initiate more heated discussion. How do YOU out there in Numanland feel about "The Plan"? Personally, I think it's quite good if listened to as if it was a bootleg, or home demos, but not as an album proper. Some great songs. A question for Derek: Is the "Ask Gary" thing oin to be resumed at all? It's one of my favorite items online. Thank you. I wonder if Gary was ever tempted to get them to remix his stuff? Cyber-Tec: Did you do the Numan gig at Southampton (UK)? Marc: We did Southampton, Guildford and we're doing Hammersmith Odeon. Cyber-Tec: Did you annoy his fans? Marc: Numan fans are quite strange really. They're difficult. The first gig we did they were slightly freaked, because it's obviously so much more aggressive. On the second gig, at Guildford, there were quite a few people who had been at the night before and that one went down well. I was surprised. I'm looking forwards to Hammersmith. I'm trying to persuade Gary to let us do a few remixes for the new album. Cubanate mixes of Gary Numan should be quite interesting. Cyber-Tec: Before Southampton I was told you were instructed to hold off saying 'who the fuck are you?' and being insulting to the crowd. Did you? Marc: I heard that they were going to ask that, but they never did. I did say WTFAY. Numan fans are difficult to please - they're very dedicated, it's like Gary or nothing - but I've always been a big believer in getting your retaliation in first! I didn't really change what I do at all ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Feb 1999 22:10:16 -0000 From: Markus Dietrich Subject: Dark in Background To: "'Gary Numan - Digest'" Hello altogether, short notice form germany. A few days ago I have seen a german TV documentary called 'Akte 99' on SAT1. Not an really interesting theme (so I have not looked with attention, but often my mind was grapped because the intro of 'Dark' was played in the background of the documentary. I am surprised who has had the idea of using it (must be a fan) :-) Also 'I live your dream' of Project Pitchfork got some attention in germany. Although it has not become a chart entry. Hopefully some people of the gothic, wave, electro sceen grab the name of Gary and are interested :-) bye, Markus from Nuremberg ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 14:57:27 +0000 (GMT) From: VinceH Subject: Dramatis vinyl for sale To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) In digest 515 describes the Dramatis LP "For Future Reference"... > side one > face on the wall / oh! 2025 / I only find rewind / no-one > lives forever / love needs no disguise. > side two > turn / take me home / on reflection / ex luna scientia / > pomp&stomp&stamp This seems to have a different track listing to my copy... which I can't actually find now that I've said that! I can't get the time off work for either of the up coming gigs !! I have to put it an Annual Leave request form 14 years in advance (in triplicate) ,as long as Aquarius is rising in the third quater, and a white elephant is born to the third son of an albino elephant. Also the seventh son of a seventh son must be present whilst I fill in the said Annual Leave form .....as well as the Loch Ness Monster counter signing the form. A flying saucer must take the form to Elvis who MUST counter sign the counter signature form and then, as long as the second coming is confirmed, I should be able to get away from work. Tony J Everybody's Infected.......'cept me !! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 16:49:45 -0000 From: "ncpl" Subject: hi Noids everywhere To: My name's Nick, living in Maidenhead. That's in England for those somewhere around the world. It's not in Kent for those that get confused with Maidstone. I've been listening to Gary's tunes since AFE? and started buying the 7" singles from We Are Glass which coincided with getting enough pocket money to both get into town and buy something. The town was Leicester, the shop was HMV in the haymarket for those in the know. I went through the 'gotta collect everything' stage until I went to Uni in Manchester. I was definitely a drug of some sort to hunt the little black disks down. The prized bits were This is My Life white label 7" (came out as the radio promo for The Plan); a couple of Photograph albums, Gary signed both on his 30th birthday bash at The Flag (he was shocked at the price I'd paid !), then I suppose all the early 12" and coloured vinyls....God knows how many colours of I Die and telekon I ended up with ! I've still got them all. If anyone's desperately looking for something let me know. I, like most people, defended Gary's position and music to the limit during the '80's. I can even claim that every girlfriend I had ended up liking him. My wife definitely loves coming to the shows and doesn't mind too much that I still play Numestunes very regularly. Just a thought, but, can you imagine if Gary did light shows now like the '83, '84 & '85 ! Arguably he doesn't need the show behind him as he's a better performer than ever, but, what a combo it would be...best lights/best ever Gary. On reflection, I have to say that the early years are definitely awesome. The middle years don't hold much water these days, although the live shows looked fantastic. There were a few highlights for me, like Time to Die, My Breathing and some of the B-sides. I could never work out why some of the weaker songs became singles and the better ones confined to LP. I concur with Gary's sentiments in the Praying to The Aliens book that his most recent work is his best for a long time. Sacrifice and Exile are stunning LP's. Sacrifice pips it for me. Lyrically it's superb. The only criticisms I would have are the slight samey-ness of the rhythm sections on each...something that all my mates spotted straight away....and the sometimes difficult to hear lyric. It's OK if you have studied for 20 year's to get a PhD from the University of Numan linguistics and diction, however, everyone else misses out on the best bits i.e. the words ! The latest remixes on dominion day CD single are his best mixes ever. I hope some more of the old stuff is treated to the same. Given the nature of Gary's writing, does anyone know if he's read any books by Hancock, Bauval, Alford, Cotterill and even perhaps Von Daniken ? It would really give him some substantial ammo to take his lyric even further. I think he's in a bit of a culdesac with the god thing, although, I think it's absolutely right to challenge the hypocrisy of the churches. Bit of a long hello, if you got this far that is....... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Fortunately, AFE came back up for long enough for me to get the link for The Forum in London, I phoned up, and my ticket arrived yesterday!!! It will be my first Numan concert- before you ask, I've only been a fan since late '97 (albeit hooked on AFE and Cars, not Exile), and I didn't exactly have the means to "swim across oceans" to Europe and the US, I missed Shepherds Bush due to exam resits and I can't make Rock City on April 18 due to academic commitments. However, June 12 will be just after my final exams so that'll be the reward for making it through the degree. The advantages of it being a one-off is that he'll do a bigger setlist. I CAN'T WAIT !!!! I'M SO EXCITED!!!!! Only three and half months to wait ! Oh and Gary, please record the show and make it a live album/video, it'll no doubt be my favourite due to the sentimental value of what is going to be the best concert ever!!!! I am 31, married with 2 children, and still clinging to threads of the 80s music scene. I was born and bred in the Midlands before moving to Canada in 1989. My musical tastes started to take shape with the Midge Ure version of Ultravox, and the Billy Currie connection to Tubeway Army introduced me to Gary Numan. Although not a collector by any means, I have a fair sized collection, but felt inspired to join this list after buying "Exile" last weekend. I think that "Exile" is his best work by far, with "Absolution" being the pick of the bunch. My musical tastes currently include Marilyn Manson (doesn't really suit the married with kids label, does it), Crystal Method, U2, INXS, Alanis Morisette, Smashing Pumpkins, Jean Michel Jarre and anything with a vague connection to the 80s. I hope that Gary continues to write and use the enhanced technology that's available to him now. Keep up the good work. I know Dawn but I >thought there was one based on Exile Now, this has nothing to do with anything published or "real" or anything, but I've been doing a comic strip for my and my friends' amusement since I was 11 (that's 24 years now), and it has had two characters VERY LOOSELY based on Mr. Webb since 1979. They're not supposed to BE Gary Numan, they're only sort of jokingly kinda-sorta PLAYED or INSPIRED by him, if you know what I mean (there are also characters extremely loosely inspired by Brian Eno, David Bowie, and Iggy Pop, as well. Since one of the Garies is a robot invented by Brian who lives in Michigan and the other is a sort of Gyro Gearloose millionaire inventor, you can see I'm not aiming for realism. None of the characters are primarily musicians, either. I think the strip is moderately amusing, if moderately badly drawn, and eventually plan to serialize it on me website, if anyone is interested.) What I wanted to get at was that I was perfectly appalled when I read Praying to the Aliens to find I had, unconsciously and inadvertantly, mimicked nearly a dozen incidents from the real Gary's life (that I did not know about!) for my damn comic strip character. It sort of raised my nape hairs--stuff like my character almost killing a parent mistaking him for an intruder (it was his father rather than his mother, but pretty close), having my character have a problem with hyperventilation, a couple of incidents involving planes, (not quite so far-fetched) a few near-quotes dealing with affection for machines, a couple of things with girlfriends (including the same name of the woman) and that sort of thing. Possibly no one but me would have seen the glaring parallels, but they did seem glaring. Quite creepy for me, if only barely on topic for this forum. :-) Maybe on some level I'm a Telekon. zg Ziggy Blum Ziggy's House O' Vermin zigi@ravenland.com http://www.ravenland.com/index.htm/index.htm Updates seriously delayed by all kinds of things! It makes up= for the fact that they've signed Nick Kershaw. It's also poll time, so it's a chance to get Gary a bit of free publicity= by voting him No.1 most collectable artist. Just a thought. The April issue of The Mix has a picture of Gary in his old studio with t= he caption "Gary Numan in his new recording studio" which is sloppy. But the= n again, journalists aren't radio astronomers or teachers so we shouldn't expect too much. BTW, it's just an ad for next month's issue, so don't ru= sh out and buy it and then blame me. I bought the re-issue of Strange Charm mainly to see if the rest were wor= th getting. There's certainly nothing new - fewer pictures, same text as th= e Box Set. However, they do print the lyrics (to the album tracks) which is= an improvement. The cover's better too, but is it right to tamper with th= e original, no matter how ill-conceived it was? Personally, I would have preferred the single CD's were released and no B= ox Set, but there's no one left to police the capitalists. Does anyone know where I can get some MAME ROMs for purely evaluatory purposes? Does anyone know why my text get's fucked up in The Digest? What do you know? I'm listening to Rebel Without A Brain by Theatre Of Ha= te and there's a blatant Trans Europe Express (Metall Auf Metall) rip-off in= it. And another thing... has anyone noticed Damon Albarn's Phil Oakey impression on Tender? God, that moment was like eating a fairly decent steak, only to be told on the last chew that it was your pet dog. Interesting that Gary's only advertising the Nottingham gig (as of 26th Feb). At first I thought he'd learned from Intel's Xmas marketing ploy ("= Oh no, we don't know anything about the Pentium 3"), but I've been set straight. The Forum gig is being promoted by third parties and no one tol= d Gary he was playing - only joking. Kind of.
