Walters" Subject: Dominion Day on eMpTyV To: The Gary Numan Digest Hello all, Well, after some very troubling encounters with mother nature versus my computer, I'm back up and running... finally! And I have a Numan related tidbit: At approximately 4 p.m. Eastern Time, during the Total Request Live show, just before #3 (Korn), and during an interview with Mark Walberg, they played a loop from Dominion Day! They MUST know about it, so an effort needs to be made to get them to air the damn video! Anyone with me? Requests can be e-mailed in, so if everyone on the list e-mails Mtv everyday, it will have to make some kind of impression on them. -- Troy L. My name is Roger and i've been on the digest about 9 months but i've been a fan for 15 yrs. and Ihave a few things to add. First thanks to Jeff T. for all the info and helping me with all my questions. Second, I have just recently bought the Fear Factory cd "Obsolete" and I though it was boring at best. I used to listen to Iron Maiden back in the early '80's and it sounded alot like that but atleast you could tell what the hell they were saying. I'm not trying to tell anyone what to listen to but, if I were trying to hip someone to Gary's music I would never take this Ave. Don't get me wrong, I listen to alot of things that are so not Gary (ie.Rammstein,George Michael,FGTH,AFOS,House,AcidJazz) but this was alittle out of my league now that I'm 30 and not 16. Anyway, the same store I picked up this had Gary in a 'Goth' section with P.P. and the cult, D.Dax and others. I found this strange and funny at the same time. Last. I found the shaped vinyl single of 'Berserker' (NUP4) today and it is discolored on the front side. Is this normal? It kind of looks like it has been hanging on the back of some dj booth for about 10 yrs. Was it worth the 25$? Pray tell. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 16:38:27 EST From: SIRENT@aol.com Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #516 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In a message dated 99-02-28 02:35:17 EST, you write: << >How many comics have Numan in it or a tie in with him? You are right for one thing, very few people that I've ran into here in FL knows who Gary Numan is. A few people know "cars". I've had 'butt-rockers' argue with me that marilyn manson wrote "down in the park". Anyhow, I've been lead guitar in my band for 4 or 5 years now (we do a swell rendition of bombers) and just recently I remembered that Gary used punk as a cover to get signed, so we went electronica. I myself own 14 Numan records. All I need to complete my collection is The Plan, I've tried ordering it and nobody can find it. I've been into industrial/Goth for 6 years and, Exile , my god. Everyone in my little click refers to me as Gary's shadow, they aren't nice people. That's all I can think of, need anything else, I'll be here. There was a make-believe musical family in that the the parents were old enough to have had the children. Gary Numan was the son of the family, and the rest of the make believe family was Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, and Scary Spice! Well I thought it was amusing! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 08:21:07 +0100 From: "Ingo Weinard" Subject: Projekt Pichfork To: This is a multi-part message in MIME format. Case in point: In addition to the Telekon reissue and White Noise, one of my Christmas gifts was Premier Hits. While I was aware of songs like Stormtrooper In Drag and Love Needs No Disguise, I had never heard them. Did Gary sing all the songs on the Dramatis album or was this a guest appearance? Hearing these two songs reminds me of one of the reasons I've listened to Gary for lo' these many years: He has one of the most distinct singing voices, ever. I think that lends to his appeal through all the different 'styles' that he has passed through. The one constant has been that voice. I remember thinking this of both Mick Hucknall (Simply Red) and Roland Gift (Fine Young Cannibals), though neither has had the lasting effect on me that Gary has made. Having Premier Hits also reminds me that I had never heard the studio version of 'We Are Glass'. I fell in love with this song when I first heard it years ago on my vinyl copy of White Noise. I must say that I'm kind of glad I heard it live first. While the studio version is a good song, Gary (and a live band) really bring this song to life. So much energy! New for me on the Telekon reissue was Photograph and Trois Gymnopedies. Combined with the piano version of Down in the Park, this really wraps up the album superbly. What a terrific concept for an album this would be, the mellow side of Numan, lush instrumentals of Numan classics. -- I'm really late for the favorite non-Numan albums, but here's the short list (after I typed it, it does't look too short). As I look at it, I notice there's not a great deal of new stuff here, but in order to be really a favorite, it's got to stand the test of time. No particular order: After The Snow - MODERN ENGLISH Automatic For The People - REM Fine Young Cannibals - FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS Exorcising Ghosts - JAPAN Organisation - OMD Computer World - KRAFTWERK Glow - THE INNOCENCE MISSION Under The Pink - TORI AMOS Introducing The Hardline... - TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY Vienna - ULTRAVOX Violator - DEPECHE MODE Hounds Of Love - KATE BUSH Pontiac - LYLE LOVETT -- Turn off my collar and mix with dark... The live cuts were ok, though I already have two of the concerts from which the B-cd cuts were taken. The A-cd was excellent. I don't own any of the late eighties material(save Metal Rythm) and it was cool to finally hear for myself a few cuts from this era of his career. 'New Thing from London' was one of the better tracks on the A-cd, in my opinion. When was NTFL actually recorded - I thought I heard a drum loop straight out of 'Shout' from Tears for Fears... Anyone else pick up on this? I am still waiting to find a local copy of Sacrifice. A couple places have it, but I refuse to pay $17 for a single cd. One of my favorite songs right now is 'A Question of Faith'. SO, any new news on Gary's new record? I am so eager to hear the new sound! Yours, Michael S. But #516 was much more interesting! > From: "Craig MacNeil" > > Hallo healthy digesters, how are you? > A few thns today. First off, these reissues. > Anybody know the difference between the Eagle and Cleoptra versions? Yes, they have different bonus tracks, the Cleo reissues go better with the box set I find. > And, has anybody else having trouble accessing the "Are Friends > Electic?" site? I have bookmarked both the AFE site and the bulletin board separately and I can load up the front page of the bulletin board and it says no-one's posted anything since 23rd, and it won't let me post anything. Maybe that's why the last digest was bigger! > Now, to initiate more heated discussion. > How do YOU out there in Numanland feel about "The Plan"? Personally, I > think it's quite good if listened to as if it was a bootleg, or home > demos, but not as an album proper. Some great songs. I have no interest in it at all. I'm not saying it's bad, because it isn't but I really don't like that particular style of music, I can't do with Gary without synth. I think it's much more "non-Numan" than Outland or Machine + Soul. Sorry, but that's my opinion. > A question for Derek: Is the "Ask Gary" thing oin to be resumed at all? > It's one of my favorite items online. I have loads of questions I want to ask Gary but it stopped just before I joined the digest :-( Maybe it'll be back after he's finished the new album, fingers crossed! > From: "Michael Jay Damrath (WRE/ColorTech)" > > I recently signed up for AOL Instant Messenger. I have to say I mostly prefer original artwork, but where do you draw the line between innovation and meddling? I quite like the original Strange Charm cover to be honest, the reissue is too damn dark blue :-) . I'm pleased they changed Machine+Soul completely, Gary looks more like the 34 he was at the time, rather than about 50. But even though I've previously taken the piss out of The Fury cover, trying to update it with Exile font looks stupid. > Personally, I would have preferred the single CD's were released and no B= > ox > Set, but there's no one left to police the capitalists. > The boxed set was better value for money, only 7-8 quid per disc, instead of 10. What you could do is go to a shop that has the jewel cases on display, but keeps the discs in a cupboard at the back, nick a case of each album, and stick your box set CDs in there :-) BTW, how's the sound quality? I'd really like to know! > From: "Craig MacNeil" Hello again Craig! > Hi gang. > I just read the issue for the 25th on the archive section of The > WorldWide Webb, but I didn't get one :{. I was beginning to think that I was the only one. I have to say the reason I picked it was because I LOVE it and most others DETEST it and I wanted to imagine the look on people's faces when they saw it. I get a warm glow and a huge grin on my face every time I listen to it. Same goes for NTFLT and U+H :-) I could have taken the easy option and picked My Breathing, but what would be the fun in that?
