I meant that there was never another album LIKE IT, or OF ITS KIND, or "that captured such a high-pitched nasal hysteria and alienation that thrilled the young and disgruntled me to the core" or some such mishmosh. I don't recall exactly what I intended to say, but I certainly didn't mean that there was never another album after The Plan, or anything remotely approaching that. And as long as I'm back on the topic, it rocks. Fabulous energy on that album. zg Ziggy Blum Ziggy's House O' Vermin zigi@ravenland.com http://www.ravenland.com/index.htm/index.htm Updates seriously delayed by all kinds of things! It kind of came back to me so I went out and bought everything he ever put out and became a really huge fan," Dino said. = The following year, Fear Factory started doing "Cars" in their live set, and according to Dino, "The kids loved it." = Fear Factory contacted Numan's manager, and eventually got him to sing wi= th them in a recording of "Cars." The track isn't on the album, but it will = be released as a single or on a B-side. Numan does appear on the album doing= spoken word on the track "Obsolete." = "He's a really nice guy," Dino said of Numan. "Listening to him was like listening to someone you really respect, like sitting at a camp fire listening to your dad tell you stories. We were on tour with Ozzy Osbourn= e, and Ozzy was, like, telling all these stories about Black Sabbath. Gary Numan was telling all us stories about when he travelled around the world= in his airplane, and we talked about how the media has ripped him apart a= nd so on. For the first time in twenty years I FORGOT Gary's birthday. Aiee! For the last decade, it's been my day to celebrate whatever the hell I felt like celebrating--started out as the Day to Mourn My Lost Innocence and evolved until last year it was My Day To Celebrate My Renewal of Innocence, until today, when it was My Day To Forget To Celebrate Anything. I went to work at noon and a coworker greeted me with, "Guess whose birthday it is!" "I don't know," I responded dully, thinking, oh no, another workday birthday party, where everyone has to be all happy and pretend to have fun while not wasting too much corporate time. "Gary Numan's!" he replied, deeply delighted in getting one up on me. Aigh!! He'd got it off the oldies radio station (at least it was on their list of celebrity birthdays and they recognized it! They also, of course, mentioned that he was "that guy who did that song 'Cars,' da-da-da-da, ba-dum, da-da-da, ba-dum," which I had to hear my coworker humming at intervals throughout the afternoon, just to gloat. Maybe he wasn't gloating, really. He says he likes the song). I was so embarrassed! It wasn't that I don't know Gary's birthdate as well as my own, it's just that I had paid absolutely no attention all week to what the date was! Oh well. At least Gary wasn't expecting a card or a gift from me, eh? Hope he had a good one. zg Ziggy Blum zigi@ravenland.com www.ravenland.com ___________________________ Necessity is the mother of several other things besides invention. --Flannery O'Connor ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Mar 1999 14:02:46 +0000 From: vickers@netcomuk.co.uk Subject: London in June To: Gary Numan Where do I ring to get tickets for London in June? Firstly, I've not been on the digest for too long, so I'm sorry if this is rehash... & a tad long... (is there a guide to length?) However, I have to say that I'm surprised at the hostility towards Maralyn Manson!?. The boyf of my best friend is a big Manson fan, & in the same way that I try to convince folk to give Gary a go, he tries to get me to give Manson a go. It would never have been something I'd thought I would like & to be honest, it's not REALLY my cup of Gypsy Rose Lee... however, it is by no means 'far' away from Gary's current style of music!!??... I just hope people on this digest have actually given it a whirl first, before slagging it of : an all too familiar Scenario to us all... is that not?. Mansons cover of DITP (I picked it up in Oz... CD single "Lunchbox" also has a track called 'Metal', but not Numans!!) is stonking!!! It's really very very good & lifts one of the main synth lines from the original track, it is very Dark and and anyone who likes Gary's own re-works of the older stuff into the more recent 'feel' would love it!. It's in the circles of people who like stuff like Manson, that Numans recent work is picking up new ears, all adding to the general 'upward' surge we're now seeing. We must all realise that 5 or 6 years ago we were alone. It took Gary changing his style & picking up new fans & people like Manson (who I 'think' was one of the first big names to start throwing Gary's name around) to kick the ball 'back' into motion... then others followed & hey presto! The saga about Mansons label bitching about the clips on MTV sounds nasty. I'd like to hope it's been hyped a bit along the way. Manson & Numan clearly like each other & each others music & style, but lets not kid ourselves about who is doing who the HUGE promotional favour. MTV would not have played a clip of Gary on his own in LA, playing DITP or anythig else. I AM NOT a Manson 'fan' at all. Just not a narrow minded Numan fan. ;-) Ian. I got The Premier Hits really cheap (6 pounds), I waited a while to get it cheap, there was no way I was paying 14.99 for it, considering I had all the songs on CD, albeit the album versions and not single edits. It is really strange hearing the single edits, as you're humming along and a bit is missed out.... I also thought it would have been nice if the track order had been chronological, but then the big tracks would have been four through 8, of course they had to start anf finish with the 2 versions of Cars. But it's a great CD, 76 minutes of top-class music for 6 quid, not bad. I also got a couple of CD singles, Machine+Soul part 2, or Machine+Soul extended extended :-) And the total horror that is "Like a Refugee". That has to be the worst Numan-related song I have ever heard. It's an embarrassment. I only paid 2.50 for it but I still felt ripped off. Apparently there's another CD of its kind, which I won't buy. It's gone straight to the bottom of my CD collection. It makes "London Times" sound almost as good as "I Die:You Die" :-) And why is a CD single called CD5? At first I thought it was a misprint, where the 5 should have been an S for single but no. Is it just to differentiate between single and album? Colin They had extended COTD on The Numa Years boxed set, this will confirm that these reissues are probably total rehash of the boxed set repackaged (and more expensive I might add). The good news is I don't have to spend 10 pounds to hear one new track. But what about the damned sound quality? Berserker and Sacrifice I want to know about in particular as the volume on the box set of those albums is incosistent. The Sac extra tracks sound terrible, but the Berserker ones sound better than the album. That's it. Nnnrff... unnnf...arrrgh--I've been fighting this one because I am nervous, even in front of other Numanoids, of admitting that The Plan is full of almost-my-favorite Numan music. There was never another album (for want of a better word, and no, it is not an album in the sense of a cohesive artistic vision, but it wasn't intended to be; neither is Tubeway Army, which is also brilliant). Hardly rehashed punk ditties (I realize you liked it, and you get kudos from me for bravery, nonetheless)! I was there! There was a lot of hash and rehash, and there still is (I can't believe people continue to emulate punk--talk about missing the *point.* *Real* punks don't dream of twenty-years-gone movements. I sneered at young hippies when I was a young punk [old hippies have an excuse], and now that I'm an old curmudgeon I sneer at young punks, which I suppose makes me an old punk, but it makes me a *real* punk, damn it.), but there was hardly *anything* like the stuff off The Plan happening anywhere. It's mostly a lyrics thing for me--there are some real bolts of genius there. I listened to The Plan more than any other album for years. These days I don't listen to it as much, but I still have a great big wet spot for it in my heart. *And* I like "Crime of Passion" a whole lot, too.
