At first I thought it was a > misprint, where the 5 should have been an S for single but no. Is it > just to differentiate between single and album? It is to differentiate them from the smaller CD singles (that really only caught on in Japan), which were marketed as CD3, because they were supposedly three inches across whereas normal CDs were said to be five. In reality they are exactly 80 and 120 millimeters in diameter. I imagine this was held to be too difficult for Americans, hence the inaccurate inch designations. The release date as everything on the internet said for EXILE EXTENDED was March 9th or 10th. I forget wich now. But, dawg if it was no where to be found!!! And it's not because my favorite cd shop in town hadn't orderd it. I wonder what the problem is. They said theyve orderd it, and reorderd it and still, it doesn't come. They are going to try a different company to order it from and see what happen's. They seem to think that the company there ordering from just don't have any more copy's. Wouldn't that be great if Cleo had so many order's that they just sold out of them all the first day of release? Goood going for Gary! But man! I've waited soooo long for this. So, to remedy my Gary Numan fix, till E.E. is in town, I bought The Mix. I wonder what the deal was on that. So many people really trashed it. I was scared to buy it. WHAT A MIND BLOWER! LOVE IT! That Emotion remix is soooo awsome! Not to mencion the We Are Glass remix. This cd is a MUST HAVE! To bad there are no longer version's on vynal any where. That was the only draw back. All the song's are about 4 minutes in lenght. But who cares!!! It practicly had my in tear's. Sure hope E.E. is available soon. To: Gary Numan > Well that explains it, but in that case why does he look so awful = > on the original? Because Gary was a bit porky when the picture was taken? Actually, the original photo was a 1992 (or possibly 1991) photo. It was only for the re-release that NuFederation or Eagle dug up the Metal Rhyth= m photos. Come to think of it, it was probably Numan cos he did the same thing for the Isolate sleeve. > Come again? If you think Dream Corrosion and the new BB reissues = > sound the same, then you should get your ears checked out :-) I don't think any live record sounds like any studio record. But are you referring to EQ or something technical like that? I really don't know abo= ut that stuff. All I know is that Gary's CDs sound OK to me. BTW, "The Emperor's New Clothes" is a metaphor for a situation where someone states something which is obviously wrong, but everyone else is t= oo scared to say so for fear of being different. For example, IRS said the US version of New Anger was a remix. It wasn't,= but most people are too scared to say so. Even worse, some people convinc= e themselves it IS a remix, just so they can talk knowingly about all thing= s Numan. So I just wonder, when someone says that so-and-so CD sounds fuzzy or dul= l, how many people are sitting there thinking "it sounds OK to me". I'm not saying that all versions of, say, Observer sound EXACTLY the same= If digital CD technology is sufficiently fine grained, it seems likely th= at each and every CD (even ones from the same print run) SHOULD sound a litt= le different if you go down to an arbitrary level of detail. For similar reasons, any sound will appear a little different every time you hear it,= unless like Democrates and Liebniz you believe that space and time aren't= infinitely fine grained. All I can say is that I usually can't tell the supposed differences. And since I don't have any physiological problems with my hearing, the suppos= ed differences seem unlikely to be THAT big. > The Sac extra tracks sound terrible, but = > the Berserker ones sound better than the album. = Oops.... I'd better go and listen to them again. > From: "M Stembridge" > Subject: Video collection > To: numan@cs.uwp.edu > Is there a Numan video collection? If so, who sells it? I'm sure someone can do better than this, but just in case I'm the only o= ne to reply, I suggest you look at Gary's own Web Site "NuWorld". That shoul= d have at least the recent videos for sale. I'm not sure which of the older= stuff is still in print, but you should be able to get the promo videos from 1983 onwards and a live video from 1993. If you really want, you can= also get a video of Gary flying his plane. And talking about it. Matthew Roberts ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 02:01:21 +0100 From: TDS Subject: Miracles (of life) To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Just wanted to announce the birth of our first child, Zachary James Tressler, on March 1, 1999. Being present for the birth was a wonderful experience. And, i might add, Zachary being born had something to do with Gary Numan, since we believe that he was conceived while we were vacationing in Florida last May so that we could attend the Numan show there (and visit my brother as well). Been lax in reading the digests, but will have relevant comments soon... I was firstly a Numan fan and am a recent convert to Manson. I don't think that there is any similarity between pre-"Mechanical Animals" Manson and Gary Numan. Manson has sugar coated his work a little and is now far more melodic than his previous offerings, which is great. I wasn't aware of the similarity until my wife thought she was listening to Manson when I was playing the Exile album. IMHO Manson has explored the future with his music, and gone down the same avenue as Gary went some years ago. I love the comparison and it reinforces the fact that there is something of a common thread to my musical tastes. Since I have had the fortune of seeing Manson in concert, but not GN, I would advise anyone to check out his current tour. Martin Canada ------- From: "ian blair" Subject: Random : Manson It's in the circles of people who like stuff like Manson, that Numans recent work is picking up new ears, all adding to the general 'upward' surge we're now seeing. Manson & Numan clearly like each other & each others music & style, but lets not kid ourselves about who is doing who the HUGE promotional favour. -------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 03:25:04 PST From: "ian blair" Subject: RANDOM : Vol.3 ??? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu What about all of the Numan covers that went 'before' Random...? Off the top of my head, the obvious ones (to me) being : Robert Palmer : I Dream Of Wires (fab... very true to original) Nancy Boy : AFE (Also quite kewl... even with the Dalek voice) Shampoo : Cars (Great fun.. nice cover, light hearted) Maralyn Manson : DITP (Said my bit on this... its VERY good!) Foo Fighters : DITP (Not heard this.... any good..?) Foo Fighters : Did they do METAL too..? Hole / Beck : Any recording of the live tracks they did...? Headswim : Think they did AFE too... not heard it though. I'm sure there are loads more... just cant think right now.. any advance..? Where all of the tracks on Random recorded especially for that project & was that all part of the licensing hoo hah for the project as a whole..? - I've not checked, but were most of the artists on Random all 'Beggars Banquet' related in some form...? It would be great to see another compilation of covers, of tracks that weren't recorded especially for that project... thats just me being greedy though really... eh? Sorry if this all went before I joined the digest.. but does any one have any favourites / worsts on Random...? I have my own ideas, but would like to know what other folk think about it. If I get any interest/response, I'll post my thoughts on it later. ;-) Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 02:16:57 +0100 From: TDS Subject: Real Drums? YES! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Just saw this in digest 485 (told you i was lax in reading the digests): To all of the above, ABSOLUTELY! These qualities are what, for me, made his first four albums his all-time best. I know this issue is hotly debatable, but can anyone honestly say The Fury was better than Replicas, or Outland better than Telekon? And let me be the first fan to go on record as saying that if i never hear another saxophone on a numan record again, it'll be too soon. MT ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 21:11:49 GMT0BST From: "James Chapman" Subject: Reissues and TOTP2 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Finally, the local indie dealer in Newcastle got in the Eagle reissues and they are selling at a resonable 8.99 or buy 2, get 1 free ie 3 for 18 pounds, which is nice. It also gave me a chance to look at the liner notes. I was rather disappointed. All the booklets had the same notes as the box set, which I already knew, but the same damn photo was used on every page! The boxed set was a far better looking product. And a couple of days ago I got Remodulate. Excellent! One of the best presented Numan products I have ever seen. I know Rod took a lot of stick for The Fury but this is wonderful ! At first I wondered why there was a bit written about eack album, but of course it's aimed at people who only know of Cars, but the two tracks I hadn't heard were worth the price of the CD alone - both are better than the album versions comfortably. Sound quality is very good, too. The only problem with it was that I had to take it out of the cardboard sleeve to fit in the CD cabinet :-) And I was watching TOTP2 at the weekend, expecting to see Gary on there, as they normally show someone who's birthday it is that week. Who did they have? Martin Fry from ABC. Oh well. Turns out he's one day younger than Gary. In turn that wasn't as bad as last year, I thought Gary was bound to be on, being his 40th, but who did they have? The drummer from Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Yeah right! Someone who just plays drums over someone who writes the best music ever, plays a lot of the instruments and sings??? Then again that's what we expect from the BBC. The programme is presented by Steve Wright, who publicly slagged Gary off on Radio 1. Damn him!! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 18:48:14 -0000 From: "Simon Joseph" Subject: sacrifice sounds much clearer To: "The Digest" I'm not a major punk fan, but the plan is something else. How could anyone dislike O.D Receiver, oh! didn't I say????? I no that these are strictly not from the plan but they were of the same era and they are on the CD Since Numan started to see his back catalogue as a source of inspiration rather than a source of embarrassment (pre dream corrosion days) We have been treated to some amazing reworks. I have had far more than my fair share of luck guessing what he would choose for the next tour. I fully expect (hope) that he will soon revisit those songs. Most of the LP is incredible, Meanstreet still stands up today. Just listen to the lyrics of Critics, Crystal ball stuff! I'm a real tubeway army fan so these songs kind of explain some of the background of how he got there. I would not say this is the most un-numan LP he has made. That unholy honour must go to strange charm, (calm down Mr Chapman:)) you also don't like "like a refugee" not even the acoustic version? Should have been a hit especially when you consider the subject matter, Rwanda. >I was just curious if anyone else received a message similar to this >one: > > Hi, I am a fellow Gary Numan fan as well! > > I love the albums replicas, dance, pleasure principle, telekon, > Sacrifice and Berserker. > > I however, am not an INCREDIBLE LOSER like you are who is obviously > sorely in need of human contact and has WAY too much time on his hands. > > Get a life, you fuck. > No but I can only presume it was meant for me! After buying all the new remastered numa CDs I can safely say they sound much much much better, in particular sacrifice and machine and soul, previously they sounded crap but now they are almost normal. I now the boxed set was remastered but sacrifice sounds much clearer, Proof: one of my flat mates is a noid and he noticed them and played sacrifice and he could not believe it , hardly a case of "emperors new clothes"! All CDs sound the same to me! hmmmm not when your sad like me and spend just over three hundred quid on speaker wire it doesn't . Oh dear, what has happened to the cover of machine & soul??? It looks like some drugged up blue peter presenter made it. Next week children we'll destroy the cover of replicas, ask your mother to save a empty squeegee bottle and a yoghurt pot. Oh dear dear, I see that Toni from curve is going to be at the convention. And I decided not to go. Fucking typical. Supposedly the Extended Exile was to be available in the US last week on the Cleopatra label -- has anyone seen it? When I heard the rumor Cleo was going to release it I decided on waiting for it rather than ordering the import. My other question is more of a request for help: I haven't seen the "Dominion Day" Video or any other Numan Footage (old or new). I would be willing to pay $20 - $25 US dollars for a Numan compilation of live footage and videos (including D-Day). If you're the person with the means and the heart to put this together for me, please contact me directly.
