This year I'm sending in half a report as I had to leave early. It started at 2.00 p.m. with the stalls open. There were about seven stalls - sometimes it was difficult to know where one stall started and another one finished. There was a guy selling Dawn comics, Dawn and Magic CDs, Dawn cards, American tourbooks, etc. He may have been connected with the Fan Club, sorry, Alien or whatever. Who knows? There was a lady selling Convention T- shirts. Why do I always have to have a T-shirt??? There were four stalls selling records, mostly second-hand, but the occasional bootleg crept in here and there. I managed to get a CD version of the Chicago gig, and later someone else showed me that he had bought one of a gig in San Fransisco. I got a video of New York. One of the above stalls had an ENORMOUS collection of badges - sorry, buttons - probably a couple of hundred, all different. (My collection boasts ONE). The same lady was selling off her T-shirts, going way back. After all these, there was a stall from Sister Ray, which is a record shop in London somewhere (Soho, wherever that is), which specialises in Numan, electronic, etc. I got my first look at Remodulate, various compilations I have never seen (by Receiver Records and so on). They were selling Exile Extended (which I think is the best ever extended, because Gary ADDS to the music, not just stretches it). And finally, there was a stall selling a limited edition single by En, which is Dig, which is Ade Orange's group. Then there was the video lounge, which showed a video (rather home-made - sorry, Ashley) about last year's Convention, but including a Numanoid trip to Belgium and other bits. About three-quarters of an hour, but Ashley got a long interview with a passing music genius whose birthday it was (or was soon to be), and in whose honour the whole Convention was taking place. Then interview from daytime TV shows, satellite channels, etc., which was shown last year, and some live footage from ?Joe's Palace? or somewhere, in 1982/3? which I saw last year, but I missed it this time. Don't know what else. Then it wound up to the Numan disco. The DJs were good - they knew which tracks are the most danceable, and they were consistent about it. Eventually, on came "The Borg". From where I was standing, there only appeared to be two of them. Resistance was futile, and life as we knew it was it an end. The first track (those of you who have their Volume 1 remixes will know these anyway) was too long, too repetitive (IMO) and they hid the melodic synth line under the dance beat. Eventually the singer, sorry, growler started, and it turned out to be Replicas. He looked rather like the hero of Twelve Monkeys, but with a goatee beard and sunglasses, and sang like Deadsy on Random. Come to think of it, am I just being thick here? Is there something I should have known? The second track was "We Are So Fragile". This HAD the top line, played live, over the pre-recorded stuff. It didn't have the excessively long intro, and was good. Then a medley of bits, which turned into Metal. At this point, the part of the floor on which I was standing started juddering, and at this point I had to leave early because my waife (at home) was not very well. (We have both had a long period of illness - it meant that I could only dance for two songs at a time during the disco, and then had to skip a few....) So that's why it's only half a report. I missed Dig, sorry, En. I never saw Gary, although he WAS there, but it was still well worth going. I met a lot of nice people (coincidentally, every single person I talked to had a great taste in music.) Might email later, if I think of anything else of significant. Lot's of good stuff for sale, got pissed (drunk, not upset) and Gemma looked gorgeous. My girlfriend tells me she was wearing a see-through ski= rt and thong, but I must have been too out of it to notice. The hotel was go= od too. But the disco.... Oh dear, oh dear! I like Frank, but doesn't he know anyone who knows what a mixer is. The "DJs" had two turntables and at least one CD player, but the entire disco= consisted of various live versions of Are Friends Electric followed by th= e odd club anthem such as, er.... Like A Refugee. Each track was punctuated= by 5 minutes of silence whilst they figured out what to put on next. If their aim was to keep the dance floor clear so that I could lunge arou= nd like an orangutan with an inner ear imbalance, then they scored top marks= If however, they wanted to get people to dance, then its back to DJ kindergarten. For once, I absolutely know that I can do better. Matthew Roberts ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 20:58:13 +0000 From: vickers@netcomuk.co.uk Subject: Convention cont. I'm sure Gary did the "digging up" but the design is clearly the work of someone else. Beginning with "Warriors," the cover of which was roasted in Trouser Press (and elsewhere), Gary's album designs were pretty weak; the Eagle re-releases retain the concept but improve the execution (except for M+S, of course, where nothing but a complete redesign would have sufficed). OTOH, the original cover for "Sacrifice" was perfectly good, and the US Caroline release, which adds a larger, jauntier typeface, is not what I would describe as an improvement. Eagle has wisely left it alone. I would also second someone's criticism of the typeface used on the re-release of "The Fury" (which I think is otherwise a great improvement). Lest anyone forget, Gary's chosen font was created for use in the credits of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." While it looks good on Exile, I can't help thinking about the Star Trek Meal I had at McDonald's in 1979. > Oh dear, what has happened to the cover of machine & soul??? It looks like > some drugged up blue peter presenter made it. Next week children we'll > destroy the cover of replicas, ask your mother to save a empty squeegee > bottle and a yoghurt pot. Somehow I think even a coked-up BP presenter employing "sticky-backed plastic" could have done a better job on that cover than Gary's ex-girlfriend did. Saturday 13th March , the sky is blue ,its warm ,there is hardly any wind and I am off to ,err,Milton Keynes. For the second year running MK has been the destination for the convention and although last year was good I am a little confused as to why MK isnt exactly picturesque. 12 noon I reach the hotel and much to my boyfriends astonishment my room is ready on time and not only that its a first floor balcony room with a superb view of the stage and surrounding stalls. To the right of the stage we have the Sister Ray stall selling a variety of CD's and vinyl plus the re-issue CD's of the Fury etc at err £6-99 each bargin forsome people, extreme aggrevation for those poor souls who paid £10 each. Next to Sister Ray we have a small stall selling limited edition EN CD's , who are EN ? well they are the group formally known as DIG. Infront of the stage is the fan club (Alien) stall with a frankly appalling lack of anything and the most unimaginative convention T shirt I have ever seen .... Then scattered around the rest of the area are 3 other stalls selling bootleg videos and CD'S , some vinyl ,old tour t-shirts ,prints etc. Nothing really to write home about this year although as I said at the beginning the bootleg concert video is very good. In the video lounge we had what was descibed as a 50min documentry about last years convention. What I found in reality was an interview done by Ashley X interspersed with footage from last year , didnt see me (fortunately) but I did see a number of people whom I recognised and are included in my numanoids gallery namely Gary Pennill and Mike Shenton. Very good interview cleverly edited. Once you had taken the stalls tour and watched the video , there was precious little left to do , which is maybe the reason why there appeared to be such a low turn out this year compared to last. Around 7pm the lights dimmed the music came on and we were all ready to party , well maybe not .... Like the traditional school disco people were dancing around the edge of the dance floor until about an hour on when some brave soul took advantage of the space and lept into the limelight closely followed by a few others . The bar was well attended at this point. A vast array of apparell was on view tonight , I would have thought that if you were male and even vaguely into the female form it was worth going just for all the pvc on show. The Borg came on a little after 9 ,I think but to be honest I wasnt really paying attention to the time ,were well introduced and well received , its a shame that they ended so abruptly but oh well. Back to dancing for another hour or so then Dig , sorry EN , appeared. If you saw last years set for EN you saw this years I am afraid. I wandered off , I could hear it well enough from my room anyway. At some point (which I missed , BLAST) Gary and Gemma appeared for around 20mins to do some signing , however apart from that Gary was for the most part absent. The reason for this we later found out was that Gary's dog Spooky had died either the day before or a couple of days before ...... Harping back to interesting apparell,Gemma appeared supporting white blonde hair interspersed with long white blonde hair extensions. The outfit she was wearing at first appeared fairly normal until whilst watching the raffle draw from the balcony of my room my boyfriend noticed that the skirt was extremely sheer and as she bent over to give out the prizes exposed a rather umm small thong to everyone. "Get your tongue off the floor Dave" , hmmmmm Well to summerise , a lack lustre event in a lack lustre town just as well next year its in GLASGOW isnt it ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 15:02:16 -0000 From: mtamea@caci.co.uk Subject: product endorsement To: numan@cs.uwp.edu The Spice Girls did Pepsi...(so did Jacko and Elton come to think of it) Now see what Gazza (probably unknowingly) endorses--> http://www.topnet.co.uk/xmall/lov/toy0410.htm Matthew _(?`$._(?`$._ _.$??)_.$??)_ mtamea@caci.co.uk http://www.caci.co.uk 0171-605-6021 ?(_,$??(_,$?? ?`$,_)?`$,_)? I'll second that. I can't stand the sound of saxophones. (personal hangup) I think it's great that an artist continues to grow. That's important. I understand Gary's desire to create the entire recording by himself. I respect that. The simplicity of the early recordings is where his appeal came from to me. The newer releases with huge textures and lots of tracks seemed convoluted to me. The issue of drum loops is pretty sad to me as well. (this is all my opinion, of course) I really don't enjoy the dirivative and lifeless sound of the drumloops he has used. They're very cliche. That's frustrating for me as a listener. I hope that he will continue to grow and experiment on future releases. I also hope that in his quest for world success (again) that he considers the elements that made him popular to begin with. I really like Foo Fighters Down In The Park, it's different. You don't need to fork out for the x-files album, it's on the CD single of 'Monkey Wrench', I think. Also, Tik and Tok's 'Child With The Ghost" (which came out before 'Berserker', so it was the first time I'd heard the song... I really liked it until I heard Numan's own version, which IMO is a lot better.) Nancy Boys Are Friends is okay - have to say I love the video. Shampoo's Cars is fun. There was Down In The Park by a band called Girls Under Glass which I was never mad keen on, but only heard it once at a Numan disco. I like some of Random - I must be the only person in the world who liked Bis's version of we are so fragile (and I quite enjoyed Bis at the Exile Manchester gig - but then I like trashy indie-punk-pop) I want to hear Hole's version of Cars and Nine Inch Nails take on Metal - can't find any recordings of either, unfortunately. And Kenikies I'm an Agent off Random was good. 'The Plan' I quite like it. It was never meant to be released as it was, really, but it stands up as a collection of songs and I don't think anybody could deny it's interesting at least. Some of the songs on there are great. Basic J and Ice to me are classics, I think it's good for what it is - which is really a quickly recorded demo. And the picture disc is beautiful. Marilyn Manson - As I have heard all the albums, I feel qualified to say that I have given him a chance, and I'm sorry, but it's not my cup of tea. Mechanial Animals is the worst thing I have ever heard in my life, Manson should have stuck to doing stuff like Antichrist Superstar which at least has the redeeming quality of being funny. Mansons music is nothing like Numan's - can you imagine Gary singing, 'I am the god of fuck... white trash get down on your knees, time for cake and sodomy... cuntfucker!!' It isn't just Manson fans who are turning on to Numan - most of the American goth community seem to like him - (as a regular poster on gothic newsgroups, i've had a lot of people saying Numan is cool - people who hate Manson with a passion) I think Numan has people like Trent Reznor to thank more than Marilyn Manson for any upsurgence in interest in his music on the goff scene. Undoubtedly Manson has done Numan big promotional favours, but let's not forget that techno and hip-hop and indie artists have also been namechecking Gary - the v96 Pulp gig was a turning point. anybody heard any more of the rumours of Numan working with Tricky and Afrika Bambaata? Like A Refugee I liked that, apart from what sounded like a bagpipe solo... the acoustic version was fantastic, I thought. Well, I have waffled enough!
