I loved Scarface, sorry scarify, sorry Sacrifice cos at last the drums had some balls. My biggest criticism of the mid-late 80's stuff like Fury, Strange Charm, Metal Rhythm etc was the crappy drums sounds. Too brash, lightweight, tinny. It was all a bit like the Rolf Harris toy or a bontempi organ sound...at least he didn't switch the bossanova bit on ! M&S is the exception to this rule however, especially the mixes of Emotion and Skin Game....nice one Mr Numes. Listen to the club stuff that started coming out in the late 80's/early 90's and it was clear that some kick-ass beats were available. Shame Gazza didn't cotton on sooner. It maybe sounded good in his studio, with some mega mixing desk assistance, bass bins etc, but, on my gear, it just didn't do it. Before you start telling me to get decent gear cos that's the problem, my gear is up to most things (not quite £300 speaker cable, but, it's Meridian, so those in the know will know what I mean)....... ...... Digressing for a moment, the guy who checked out the sound quality of the re-releases by listening on the college computer with some head phones needs to wake up !! Do you know how much the cd drive in a pc costs to make ??? 2/10ths of knack all !! Anyone who thinks they're hearing a difference that way is dilluding themselves....anyway, for tunes that were put down not that long ago e.g. Scarface, why the fuck wasn't it done right first time !!!)....end of this digression.... ......I loved the weight of the sound even if the loops were a bit samey, with a couple of exceptions. With baited breath I rushed off to buy Exile and it's the same bloody stuff. Compare the studio tracks to Dark Light (even if the loop is on the backing track), and the real drums really bring it to life....Question of Faith is a great example I hope that Gazza evolves the next (new) release by taking the best bits forward...sans saxophone of course. I do appreciate (based on Gazza's comments in the biog) that cash was tight and doing stuff in house was the best (only) option then. So, despite what you might want to flame in my direction, I forgive Mr Webb most things, and still reckon that the last two LP's (remember those skinny black things.....now, can you hear the difference on your pc ??) are some of his best work, and probably on my most fave list of all time. Just before I go to town (literally) to watch the boys in blue at Wembley, all the stuff about the Plan being OK or not.....er, did you forget to read GN's comments about it in the first place ?? end of debate surely. Basic J, Ice....fantastic !!! Turn them right up !!! last thing....yep, Gazza could loosen up a bit, but, like I said before, it would be quite good if my wife & mates could understand the lyrics without me having to translate all the time. It kind of ruins the experience. Like Chris Tarrant says: It's only easy if you know the answer !!! See you in Nottingham !!!!!!!!! Then I read this message from someone saying that some Englishmen (I presume Englishwomen don't have the same problem) are jealous of Americans. Well I'm not a man, but I am English and have spoken to many Englishmen, including some who live in Australia and none of them mensioned their intense jealousy of the Americans. I would be interested to meet these people you have heard say they are jealous. Also POM- Prisoner of her majesty. Are the English prisoners in their own country? Makes me think of that other antiquated slang term Limey. That would make me a Limey POM (hahahaha). Yes I agree sense of humour is subjective. I also think intelligence is subjective, if it wasn't subjective, there would be only one intelligence test and psychologists wouldn't debate their validity. I understand the 11 plus is no more because of this. I failed the 11 plus but I'm at university now. I also think that what people think is good music or bad music is also subjective hence "imho". I wonder sometimes when we share our views on Numan topics, are we sharing or arguing? I prefer the former myself, but it seems a difficult task. Thank you for the news on the Martin Clunes film. I might just give my dad a call and ask him to tape it for me. Speaking of Martin Clunes, I saw a repeat of a Jane Horrocks show where he's this Jane Austin type character and falls in love with this mad woman who keeps knocking him down and ripping his trousers open. Anyone see that? Well I'm off, I have to clean my ball and chain and suck some limes before bedtime. I was just in Hollywood and stopped by the Viper Room - a band called Sugar Cult was playing and they kicked into "Cars" (Stating "This song was stolen from us 20 years ago!")- a pretty good version I must add although at first I thought they were making fun of Numan. I talked to them later and found out they were fans and they dug my tattoo. Also in San Francisco I was staying at a hotel where across the street a performer named "Gary Neuman" was playing at a rag time bar.....Hmmmmm..... In the April 99 issue of Q magazine they review the Premier Hits album in the re-issue section. It ststes the catalog number as BBL 2007 CD which is the same as the old version. It does not show the cd cover. Has anyone in the UK seen this new release, and is it the same as the 1996 version? Long time no see (from me, that is..) Here's a quick question for anyone: The re-issue of 'Sacrifice' from Cleopatra (which is a very nice cd, Rod..) has the extended version of 'A Question Of Faith' on it. That's great. My question: Where did it come from? My 'Sacrifice' Extended from Numa doesn't include that track..In fact, the extended version doesn't seem to be extended at all, as I own the Eagle box set.. Any answers are appreciated. :):) -Dave (the lurker) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1999 01:18:26 -0500 (EST) From: brezniakdavid@webtv.net (David Brezniak) Subject: Sacrifice (Ext?) To: numan@cs.uwp.edu By the way, before you flood me with questions: My Sacrifice Extended cd is Numa CD 1011, both on the cover and cd. The cd does not say 'Extended' or anything..(is that right? Did Berryl goof up? ) AND..the times on the tracks match with the Sacrifice I have from the 'Box Set', as follows: Pray-3:55 Deadliner-4:29 A Question Of Faith-4:52 Desire-3:47 Scar-3:25 Love And Napalm-5:08 You Walk In My Soul-4:39 Magic-4:42 Bleed-6:10 The Seed Of A Lie-5:25 So, is my Numa cd correct? Thanks in advance.. Dave ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Mar 1999 17:44:19 -0000 From: "Antonio" Subject: Two points. To: "Gary Numan" To Matthew Roberts - (P+M) I said - >> Mechanial Animals is the worst thing I have ever heard in my life.. You said, >(Have you ever listened to yourself?) Am I not allowed to dislike MM just because I like Numan? I'll say it again - I do not like Mechanical Animals. And is there any reason to be so snide? When did I insult you personally? >> Manson should have stuck to doing stuff like Antichrist Superstar which >at least has the redeeming quality of being funny. >"I went to God just to see - and I was looking at me." >I don't know if Brian wrote this or stole it from someone. However, it's by >no means funny - it's very serious. What exactly floats YOUR boat? What floats my boat? Not that. If I want to listen to 'very serious' anti-religion records, I will stick to Fatima Mansions, despite what Cathal thinks of Numan (see below), or Crass, or PiL, or Dead Kennedys. As for 'very serious', well, Manson does indeed have a sense of humour, which is very apparent in most of his songs. I never said he was crap - just that it's not *my* cup of tea. White Zombie are, Nine Inch Nails are, Marilyn Manson isn't. >"If you tolerate this, then your children will be next"? >Now THAT'S funny, like a Tom Clancy 'novel', or a Steven Spielberg 'film'= I don't like Manic Street Preachers either. Sorry. >I suppose you'll say that humour is subjective. >Well yes, but intellect is less so. Why? Define intellect, if you think I have none. >Well not a cover >but of interest non the less is a single by The Fatama Mansions called The >Loyaliser (1994) the second song is called "Gary Numan's Porsche" Never >could properly work out the lyrics though it does seem positive. Positive? Some of the lyrics in that song are - 'Don't deface the room - he'll be leaving soon - I hope.' 'Gary Numan's Porche says bring back Mrs.T says we will gas the poor' 'take out the F words and take out the N words and take out the Z words... All that's left is the garbage but that will do' That doesn't sound all that positive to me - it *is* difficult to make out what Cathal Coughlan is singing a lot of the time, I used to like Fatima Mansions, (and Microdisney before them, and Bubonique after) but they had become very boring by the time Loyaliser came out - they were just critisising everybody from Numan to REM (ever hear their cover of 'Shiny Happy People'?), and had lost the sense of sick humour that made 'Against Nature' and 'Viva Dead Ponies' such entertaining records.
