Unlike some of the nitpicky stuff that goes around (like the US/UK crap), whatever works for you is OK by me. However, I am curious....if you play around with sound processing software and EQ's to affect the sound, what was the point of Gary and the mastering engineer tweaking around with it before you get it? They apparently do these things so we can hear the difference. Bizarre concept to look at the improvement on a screen ?? You could just do that to any of his CD's to tune it to your liking. If there's something about EQ's that I've missed.....please enlighten me. By the way, just to prove that digesters can do more than argue about everything A) I agree with you about Dark Light...best live set released to date, and B) I can probably get Hunting Venus recorded on NTSC for you. Let me know if you've got it sorted already. Cheers NickiNu....can't think of a 'proud to be...' so try this for a starter for 10 "The sounds of thinking metal We used to call him mother wouldn't you"......any takers ? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 19:34:47 EST From: PeterPanda@aol.com Subject: Baker's Dozen To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings all! After months of being far too busy to do anything but eat, work, sleep, I'm finally catching a moments reprieve. I know that the Digest has moved on from the "Favourite Top Ten Non-Numan" albums topic quite some time ago, but I'm playing catch-up here and really wanted to participate. Since my list is coming so late, I've also taken the liberty to cheat and have included a baker's dozen favourites; I just couldn't scale it down to ten. It should also be mentioned that I think these are my favourite top ten, as they continually remain with me and hold a special place in my heart, however, as this whole endaevour is highly subjective, it is entirely possible that I'd feel differently about some of these choices at any given moment. With that disclaimer in mind, here goes: Thomas Dolby - The Golden Age Of Wireless Highlights include: One Of Our Submarines (one of the few non-Numan pieces to reach the brilliant heights of Gary himself); Europa And The Pirate Twins; Flying North; Airwaves. Bjork - Debut Probably the best "new" artist album I've heard in a long time. Very distinctive, very unique, interesting arrangments. Captain Sensible - Revolution Now While lacking the humour of his early LPs, this one stands out as one of the most moody and well-connected albums in recent memmory. The Cure - Disintegration I tend to prefer the real early Cure material but this album holds such a wonderfully dark and consistent mood throughout along with a few catchy tunes. The Damned - Phantasmagoria Unlike most groups, I prefer the mid to late period of The Damned to their early punk (although some of that is good too). This is their highlight, songs like "Sanctum Sanctorum" and "Is It A Dream" are simply goth masterpieces. This album deserved more recognition when it came out than it got. The Darling Buds - Crawdaddy What happened to this group? This was the quintessential fun "pop" album of the early 90s. Every song is a toe-tapper. Pure pop genius. I hope they still have a recording contract. Edgar Froese - Stuntman Founder of the amazing instrumental, synth icons, Tangerine Dream, this LP came out during the groups best period (1977-1985) and captures beautiful early analog synth work at its best. The Moody Blues - Day Of Future Passed Released in 1967 and still the best fusion of rock and classical. A concept- fusion album with no peer. The Sisterhood - Gift Dark, meanacing, great synths on "Giving Ground." Too bad The Sisters Of Mercy haven't reached this level since. The Sundays - Reading, Writing, And Arithemtic Great debut for fans of jangly quitar style music. Every song is good and the lead singer is quite attractive. Tangerine Dream - Exit Again from their best period, this album reeks of atmosphere and wonderful melodies. Last track, "Remote Viewing" is awe-inspiring. Horizontal Brian - Vertical What ever happened to this group? Great debut of typically fun 80s pop music. Every song a great toe-tapper. Too bad they're stuck on vinyl still. Hohokam - Seven Deadly Sins Ha! Ha! Okay, but this would have been here if the singles were any indication of what was to have come. Thanks for reading my subjective favourites. Me! Fear factory had a live in japan on 14 Feb. at Club Citta Kawasaki. Reports appear on several magazines. Repors say FF used 'Cars' (in full length!) as opening BGM of their stage. Just in case no one else has posted this yet. Gary Numan To Appear In Fear Factory Clip For 'Cars' Nothing feels right in cars, unless you're in Fear Factory, who feel quite at home in cars. So much so that they covered Gary Numan's '80s anthem for the recently released Obsolete digi-pak, which contains the complete Obsolete album plus five bonus tracks, including "Cars." Now the band has decided to release "Cars" as a single, and Gary Numan himself has signed on to appear in the video, which is on the schedule for taping on April 9. William Morrison is slated to direct. The Fear Factory digi-pak was released on March 23 by Roadrunner Records. In other news, Fear Factory recently recorded four songs for use in the video game Demolition Racer, which is due out by Accolade for the Sony Playstation this fall. The band is currently touring the U.S. with System of a Down, Hed (pe), Spineshank, and will head over to Holland for the Dynamo Festival, an 80-band, four-stage metalfest, from May 21-23. - Kevin Raub For more information on: Fear Factory at: http://p0.com/r.d?hArhMS5eE=musicblvd/cgi-bin/tw/6021_42_23466 Gary Numan at: http://p0.com/r.d?8grhMS5eE=musicblvd/cgi-bin/tw/6021_42_52301 -- Matthew Oldland Bell Industries - LMB Division at Eli Lilly & Co. oldland@in.net / moldland@lilly.com AOL:mattie54 / ICQ:12816553 Computer Technology IUPUI ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1999 23:02:44 -0800 From: "Andrew West" Subject: hunting venus To: "Numan Digest" This is a multi-part message in MIME format. Respect to Martin. it really took me back to 1979-1981, re the adoration I certainly had as a teenager, and still have to an extent as a "Thirty Something". Hopefully, it will become available on video/ DVD and / or CD. Those of you hat didnt see it will wish you had. Those who did, will always wear swede shoes in the hope that Gazza pisses on them!!!!!!!!!!! Nottingham: 180499 Be there or dont get ya shoes pissed on!!!!!!!!!! regards to all. The perils of being on the Digest are that you get the list on the Sunday morning, and people kindly let you know that Gary is performing Are'Friends'Electric? on yesterday's BBC archive Top Of the Pops programme 'TOTP2', and you forget to tape programme when you're out shopping on that Saturday afternoon!!! :-) I blame TOTP producers. They didn't feature Gary in their birthday slot earlier in the month for Gary's 41st birthday; they instead featured ABC (Martin Fry's birthday later in same week...). Let's hope we can see this video on a compilation or stills published other than the one in the Praying To The Alien book. Back to Hunting Venus, and as well as featuring 80's music in this comic tale of a fictional New Romantic one -hit wonder band, the Venus Hunters, there's a soundtrack album released in the UK tomorrow. Won't know track listing until see in shops tomorrow but with cameos by Gary, Tony Hadley, Simon Le Bon; I assume it'll feature Gary, Spandau Ballet & Duran Duran amongst others... One of the stars -Jane Horrocks of Hunting Venus says " Gary Numan was petrified. I think he might have opted out at the last minute if he could which is weird considering he's quite happy to go on stage in front of thousands.." The track itself is also called "Dance" and Steve tells me it's the best contender for being the previously named track called "Letters". This track was recently discovered on the original "Dance" sessions master tapes. Many fans might recall the "Letters" track from the b-side of the "Sister Surprise" 12" single. The track called "Letters" was miscut at the time of pressing and "Face To Face" was pressed instead. It's been a personal goal of mine to get to the bottom of this "Letters" mystery, and it seemingly is going to pay off for us with the discovery of the track "Dance". He also told me the master tapes contain really fine instrumentation from Mick Karn which never made the original release of "Dance". BTW, the last 4 Beggars singles CD releases (The Plan, Dance, I Assassin, Warriors) are scheduled for a late Summer 1999 release. Are there other former members of Numan's entourage with releases of their own? I await Dramatis' release on CD, but anything else? Surely Cedric has done some recording since circa 1982! I meant to say that after listening to the songs from Sacrafice, that I like the non-extended versions better, and now feel better about going out and buying the re-issue, and get the full non-extended CD. I was listening to _Street Life_, a Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry greatest hits collection, and I jumped a mile when "Same Old Scene" came on. Like "Heart of Glass," it has the same intro as "Remind Me to Smile." What the hell is that sound, that three prominent (in their times) artists would intro a song with it? As to Michael Damrath's support of Britain, well, Britain has some great things going for it, most of them musical. I'd like to visit Britain, maybe even spend a year at university there. However, America's got some great things going for it, too. Just to name a few, we've got Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, great guitarists like Stevie Ray Vaughan, the INVENTION of rock'n'roll, men on the moon, nicer weather (regionally), Mel Brooks, Henny Youngman, Jerry Seinfeld, Woody Allen, other Jews, wigless court proceedings, no nobility, a fantastic Constitution, and much lower gas (petrol) prices than in England. We may also speak better English. The Queen herself apparently can't speak the Queen's English - she recently used "us" where she should have used "we." Hmm. British slang is awfully cute, though. :) Any country is guaranteed to have its great things, its so-so things, and its awful things. Because we're American, Michael can tell you awful things about America and I can tell you good things. There's a balance. In both England and America, you'll find people who love their country and those who hate it and want to change their nationality. I happen to like being American. Michael doesn't, and he has the freedom to move (if he can find a lead in Digital Prepress). Both our countries guarantee us that freedom. Pretty cool, huh?
