I got an email from the guy selling the "Gary Numan Autographed Pleasure Principle LP". He claims the autograph is authentic, but then pulled it from the auction. Which seems to be saying one thing and doing another. Who knows... He says Gary's autograph has changed since 1980, but those who saw the item while it was up on eBay agreed with me that it and the salutation seemed highly out of character. BB obviously used Gary's autograph for the artwork/logo on 1981's Dance which is nearly exactly the same as the 1998 autographs I have. The whole thing seems just a little strange. I hope I did the right thing! The US version of Extended Exile was released late I think but I've seen it in stores in L.A. this week... so it's out there! I don't have a US copy with me but it appears to be the same as the UK version, with different (bolder) titles on the front. The track listing is exactly the same. Best wishes, Rod Los Angeles ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1999 02:08:30 +0000 From: Michael & BethAnn Damrath Subject: Amerika da Beautiful To: Gary Numan Riana - One of the problems with these wonderful modern inventions like email and online chats is that it's way too easy to come off serious when your tongue is at least partially stuck in your cheek. I have always had a soft place in my heart for Great Britain. I thought it would be nice for an American to step forward in the (admittedly minor) debate we were having about England vs. America and defend the Jolly Old Place. I like America just fine. I think we Americans have it easy in alot of respects. I know my life is good here. I will also have to say that while reading 'Praying to the Aliens' and also from watching The Who's 'Quadrophenia' that England at times seems to be, at least for some, a scary place to grow up. Gary Numan and Pete Townshend talk quite a bit about getting the shit kicked out of them. Perhaps it's the lack of handguns in England that makes for the popularity of an old-fashioned ass-kicking, and I guess I'd rather get beat up than shot, but the picture Gary and Pete paint of life on the British streets feels like a frightening experience. Perhaps some of our British digesters can comment and shed some additional light on this subject. Is (or was) England as violent a place as Gary writes about in his autobiography? What exactly are your chances of getting your ass kicked just for looking or dressing the wrong way? And on another angle, if you ever want to read an interesting story about the English experience from the point of view of an American, check out Frank Zappa's autobiography 'The REAL Frank Zappa Book'. He tells number of tales about dealing with British musicians (particularly The LSO), the British Unions, and a hilarious chapter about the Britih Courts experience (when he was brought up on charges of public indecency regarding the content of one of his albums). Unfortunatly, Utopia does not yet exist. Not over here and not over there either. Sure, I'd have no trouble finding all the Gary Numan music I wanted, but would I be able to find Macintosh Software? Plus I understand getting a pizza delivered over there can be something of a problem. Hmmmm... There appears to be a 12" mix of "Moral" which is about a minute longer than the original version. This extended version of "Moral" is scheduled to make it's appearance on the collector's album. Jeff Tolva (The Machman) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 17:37:12 +0100 From: "marty" Subject: Eagle Records To: "Numan Digest" Today in the Sun newspaper which is the UK's top selling paper there was quarter page advert for Status Quo's new album on Eagle Records. Lets hope Gary's new album will get at least the same for his new album. Saw the film Hunting Venus last night, top film, brill music and three numan songs (parts of). Did anyone think Gary looked hard (I'm not talking trouser department). Also started to read Alien which I got the other day. So far I prefer the fan club. I've only read the Deadliner section and I notice Steve Malins mention the film Flesh Gordon. I'm sure when I asked Gary about the film he said he was asked to do the music for the film not star in it. This was about four years ago so I could be wrong ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 08:37:05 -0500 From: "Brian Foster" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #525 To: "Gary Numan" Regarding the autographed Pleasure Principle on e-bay: Most assuredly fake. Not only is it NOT Gary's signature, but it was signed by a woman. (Or a confused male. Even the slightest knowledge of handwriting reveals this detail. I will even go as far as to say she was in her mid-teens at the time.) I hate fraud. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 17:34:37 EST From: LELAU15@aol.com Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #525 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu, datta@cs.uwp.edu Thanx all for answering. LeLau15 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1999 09:04:59 -0500 From: "Brian Foster" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #525 To: "Gary Numan" Hello all- Regarding the BOGUS autographed P.P. album on E-bay, here are some exchanges between "Mike" and myself. My responses are in ( ). "Hi, I believe I know the truth (why not just simply KNOW the truth? Why do you need to believe you know the truth? That's like Reagan, with his "I believe my memory is that we did not trade arms for hostages.") and what Gary Numan looks like. I am disheartened at the idea that anyone would do something like that. (Really? Only disheartened? I'm outraged!) I didn't get a photo taken with him at the time and my only proof would be the friends that I had gone with of whom I am out of touch. (What bad luck! A bit predictable, however...) The only reason I brought up the date was because it was such unique day for the concert that I had remembered it all these years. (What's unique? A concert on a Friday? Whoopee! Leap year? Puleeze! Do you have the PROGRAM from the show since it was so SPECIAL? Now that would be valuable, and go a long way in proving your story.) This is my first attempt at selling items and I am not too keen on the idea of continuing if my integrity gets questioned on such things. (It wouldn't be questioned if there weren't so many holes in the story. Sweetie, just because you say it's true, doesn't make it true! Silly boy! Proof is in the puddin'! Nobody cares much whether you continue or not. I'm certainly not going to change my mind.) I stand by my account as the truth, if you have doubts then I ask you not to bid. (You have a great career ahead as a politician!) Mike" ____________________________________________________________________________ ______ Then this one: "Hi again After some thought, I decided not to argue the authenticity and just pull the item from bidding. I pride myself on honesty and don't want anyone to get an impression otherwise. I will keep it in my collection and treasure my memories. Mike" (Good for you! If you are so sure it's genuine, get it confirmed. www.numan.net I'm sure you could e-mail Gary a picture, and he could tell you if it's genuine. It's just that in all the years and concerts, all the autographs- Never once did he sign that way. So even if he DID sign it, it would never sell after his death, because it looks like a kid's pretend autograph. And to sign again in marker, devalues it even further! Additionally, hand writing analysis reveals many clues that seem to suggest a feminine hand, probably mid-teens or so, is actually the author. One more point- some of the wear and tear seem to be UNDER the signature. That album would have been quite new in Feb. 1980. This suggests the signature came later. As you can see, genuine articles are subject to extreme scrutiny. Even if an object is genuine, you'd better be able to back it up. The fact remains- If Gary autographed that album (Not many people bring albums to shows, as they tend to get wrecked) then he went out of his way to make it look as though he hadn't. Next time, get a picture, and a program. That's what I do! Numan fans are a bit testy about these things.) >>P.S. He has in fact, pulled the item in question out of the auction. cheers! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Apr 1999 18:00:28 +0100 From: colin_l Subject: Hunting Venus... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi everyone. Thoroughly enjoyed Hunting Venus. Numan tracks featured were Are Friends Electric?, Metal, and Cars. Also, in the crowd along with Gary and Gemma was Richard Beasley... A reviewer said the classic scene was Gary with his flies undone!!! Interestingly, I had on the subtitles for the song lyrics, and whoever did them made a few mistakes. "About little deals & SU's" was mis-interpreted as "Of little girls and you"(!); and "I don't think it meant anything to you" became "I don't think of any name with you"(!). Soundtrack album features Cars. Colin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1999 09:25:37 -0800 From: "Andrew West" Subject: Hunting Venus CD! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi gang. I've been away for a while, getting a new job in a new town. I will participate more often when I get settled - probably a week from now. Anyway, I think I have found the solution to the muddy sound quality problem. I have just joined a band, and we have our own studio, equipped with Tannoy monitors. These are the same monitors that Gary has in his studio, and they have a reputation for being very "bright" - or high end friendly. After listening to "Sacrifice" over these, I realized the problem. It's sounds fantastic on these, but bad on a walkman. Hope I could shed some light. I have to admit I had great hopes for this project, and I even submitted a friend's covers, but my impression is that this project somehow "got away" from Klaus. Maybe he was trying to make it more than it should have been by going to record companies, etc., but personally I would have been happy with a limited number CD-R release and been done with it. At the time when Klaus was requesting fan covers (and that was quite some time ago), I had no idea he was going to make it into such a grand project. I'm disappointed that it never happened (except for the CD-R which he gave to Gary before the Cologne, Germany show). I'm interested in hearing other thoughts...
