'Dance' has been remastered from the original studio tapes (and is sounding great!) which also threw up a reel which may solve the 'Letters' saga. As Jeff Tolva reported, Gary claims that 'Letters' was on the same tape as 'Face To Face' but the cutting engineer used the wrong track. This was a master reel of Dance out-takes but it is confusing. 'Face To Face' is actually marked up as it's original title, variously 'I, Assassin' or elsewhere 'My Assassin'. Similarly, the track suspected of being letters is actually called 'Dance', so to avoid confusion with the subsequent album title I'd assume Gary wanted to change the title. However, BOTH these tracks will appear on the remastered (album) 'Dance'. Also on the tape were two (early) mixes of 'We Take Mystery' (one was used as the WTM B side) and a 12" mix of 'Moral' which lasts a minute longer than the album version. As Jeff reported, we'll probably release it next year on a rareties CD. 'The Plan' will be sent for remastering soon (don't expect any new tracks) and hopefully both it and Dance will be issued together in late summer. 'I,Assassin' and 'Warriors' will be remastered for issue early next year but until I've seen the master tapes I don't know if there will be any surprises. There are no plans currently for 'Living Ornaments '80' as the full concert tapes are still missing. - steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Apr 1999 16:26:48 -0500 From: Valerie Iglar-Mobley Subject: but what about 'Living Ornaments 80'? To: Jeff Tolva Thanks to Jeff for passing along the GREAT news about BB (re)releasing the rest of their catalog. I must admit, I was doubtful they would; I was wondering if they would leave it at those earlier, more marketable albums. And the bonus disc sounds terrific! Myself, I've only picked up 'Tubeway Army' from this round, since it had AN ENTIRE NEW ALBUM tacked onto it as a bonus. I had everything else already on cd. But I'm still left wondering whatever happened to 'Living Ornaments 80'? Now, I know about how they lost the original masters, so they couldn't give it the full concert treatment as they did with '79, and instead gave us the complete "farewell" concert to make up for it. But that's still not an answer. The "farewell" show is just not the Teletour sound. I adore the album and I'm eternally grateful to Beggars' for giving it to us, but am I alone in feeling it just doesn't substitute for LO'80? [Let me digress a moment here and ask for a little sympathy from my comrade 'noids. You see, I've only just been able to get my hands on the 'Living Ornaments' sets that BB put out on disc. I've been working at it for a full year! I originally tried to order it through BB online, since I'd heard that was the only place we could get them. They tried sending them three times, each time losing them in the mail. They had even refunded my money and were trying to send them for free to make up for the trouble, but they just couldn't get them to me. Then I tried ordering them through another online store, Mass Music, where they were listed as cheaper than CDnow's price. If you're thinking of using this company: be warned. First they canceled my order without informing me, I only found out when I e-ed them to check on my order. Then when I resubmitted my order, they lost that one in the mail, they claimed, again without notifying me it'd gone out; I found that out again after e-ing them to check. I gave up on them, cancelled the order and asked for a refund. That was in January. I'm still waiting for my refund, and I've e-mailed them several times asking for it. In contrast, CDnow had my order turned around and shipped to me in a week, even though I was paying with check. So, the point of this digression is: be careful of Mass Music.] A while ago James Chapman asked us to rate the 'live's. For me, without a doubt, '80 is absolutely the essential live Gary. It's crisp, the adaptations are brilliant and imaginitive, the sound quality is excellent, and even the visual layout is stunning. True, 'Telekon' is my favorite studio album and that live set is from the supporting tour, giving that sound and those songs eminence-- so maybe I'm biased. Still, I can't imagine anyone thinking '80 and the "farewell" discs are interchangeable. What they're calling 'Living Ornaments 81' is clearly influenced by the 'Dance' sound-- even though he hadn't released that album, yet. Just listen to that set's rendition of "Remember I Was Vapour" alone and it should be obvious. The music on the album is funkier, the lyrics are slurred and ad libbed. Again, don't get me wrong, I love it, but it's such a different sound. And what's with that awful picture of Gaz on the back cover looking like a total spaz? If BB are committed to releasing all of their catalog-- as it seems they are, judging from the inside scoop Jeff has given us-- couldn't we somehow convince them to release '80? Even without giving it the full concert, double-disc treatment but just the ten song set they have? I mean, how many of us have it on disc? I think the only time it was available on disc was on that Japanese edition they were calling "Asylum 3". How many fans did that one reach? Much as I love the album, I passed it up the one time I saw it years ago, because I hadn't gotten into replacing all my vinyl with cds yet. I had gotten the "1" and "2" sets, but that was for all the bonus material. What's the feeling out there? Would anyone else be with me on this? Anyone else wish we had '80 on disc? Think it might be effective if we sent some messages to BB asking if they could release the album and make it a clean sweep of their Gary library? lots of love to all, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley proud member of Boys Like Us, the stormtroopers in drag * * * "Does everything stop when the old tape fails?" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Apr 1999 07:16:51 -0500 From: watkins@io.com Subject: Do you have one? I tracked down the new Fear Factory 'Obsolete' cd with 5 bonus tracks and digipack design. (Roadrunner Records RR 8653-2) I bought the original version last year when I heard that Gary had done guest vocals on the album. He indeed does "Spoken Word intro on 'Obsolete'" and the vocals are so distorted to my ear it could have been literally ANYONE doing them. Quite disappointing. But the new expanded edition has the track "Cars" which apparently Gary flew all the way from England to Vancouver to record vocals for... doesn't make much sense to me... But the track is very cool; the lead singer trades lines with Gary, who actually sings on this one, and they both sound great. Musically it is kind of a heavy metal version, very guitar heavy and aggressive, but it's certainly interesting and highly enjoyable, unlike many cover versions we could list. The rest of the album for me is unlistenable. It is a *very* hard edge, heavy metal, industrial, alternative whatever you call it. Way too much for me. So here's a great example of finding a 'diamond in the dirt'... To: "Digest Numan" Citizens of Planet Numan, I was playing that kick-ass live version of "Bombers" the other day in the car, and it suddenly occurred to me that it is the perfect track for the NATO aircrews to play as they home in on their targets. That and maybe "The Aircrash Bureau" ... or maybe that's more suited to the Stealth fighter crews. I know from conversations with two ski pals who turned out to be a Tornado pilot and his navigator, that they often maintain radio silence and play rock music as they zero in for the kill. We should all do our bit by mailing them cassette copies of these Numan tracks and other appropriate numbers, like "Sky Pilot" by Eric Burdon and The Animals. Any other suggestions? On the whole life in the UK is great and I have lived in some towns and the countryside. I have never experienced the kind of problems that Gary has in respect to 'getting the shit kicked out of me'. But that is more likely down to the kind of person I am. My experience of the US comprises of hours of chat on-line with Americans and a 2 week holiday in Florida (which I have to say was fantastic). During that time all the people that I have spoken to or met were very courteous and helpful. The one big difference from the UK is that it seemed that everything in the US was at least 1/3rd cheaper. (no bloody European Community VAT or other taxes). The Unions used to be a real problem in holding back growth by restrictive practises but much less so now after Maggie Thatcher sorted them out. We, in co-operation with Tony Webb and Steve Webbon of Beggars Banquet, released an album of Numan Covers which sold in excess of 1000 copies. This was a live recording of our regular set. We were asked to submit tracks to Random 3 which we did but as yet have heard nothing recently either. We have decided to digitally re-mix and re-master the entire album. We have completed 3 of the 19 tracks but hope to have all tracks completed by the end of the year. Once complete we will have to look at what can be done with it, but personally I would really hope to be able to get it back out there in some way or another as the 1st three re-mastered tracks sound great and have really scrubbed up well. I think we chose 19 kicking numbers to cover and the songs sound just as great today as they did when we recorded them in 1987. The Track listing is as follows: This Wreckage • Me, I disconnect from you • Crash • I die, you die • Complex • Tracks • We are so fragile • Remind me to smile • We take mystery • Down in the park • I'm an agent • I dream of wires • Fade out 1930 • Airlane • Films • Cars • We are glass • My shadow in vain • Are friends electric. I'll keep y'all posted as the project progresses. Luv on ya!!!!! They also only show a narrow aspect of what life is like for all people across different backgrounds and parts of the country. I have seen a lot of violence depicted in American TV programs which give the impression that violent crimes are common place and several murders happen in one district every day. I would like to think this is an exaggeration for the purposes of melodrama and ratings. > Perhaps some of our British digesters can comment and shed some >additional light on this subject. Is (or was) England as violent a place >as Gary writes about in his autobiography? What exactly are your chances >of getting your ass kicked just for looking or dressing the wrong way? England is as safe as any other place as long as you are sensible. ie it is unwise for a man wearing make-up, unusual clothing (unusual as in not what the patriarch wear) and enter the local Macho man club, or try to get a job as a corporate manager etc. Some people refuse to let society dictate what they wear and when they wear it; there are consequences to this nobel attitude (I'd like to note here that I believe in an ideal world, people ought to be able to wear what they want and not be prejudged or attacked). I'm sure there are plenty of examples in America of these kind of social rules, how to be, how to dress, how to act appropriately for the occasion. I consider myself to be very unusual, I don't fit in anywhere and I've experienced negativity from people who just don't like people that are different from the norm. However It has never gone further than idle threats and I've always stood my ground. My boyfriend has never been beaten up when he was living in England. I would say there are certain factors that need to be considered: background, upbringing, education, self esteem, area live in and attitude. (There are probably others I've omitted here. I believe it's the same to lesser or greater degrees in every country in the world. So to apply Numan to these factors, Gary was from a working class background, thrown out of school so I don't think he got any 'O' levels, low self esteem (just talking to him, listening to him self criticize makes me believe this), solid upbringing (devoted parents) and an in your face "I'll show you'' attitude (This I surmise from what he said about when he became famous, he rang everyone that had put him down before he got famous). Can't speak for Pete Townshend. One thing I'll say about Numan, he's different and the general population will try to knock someone who is different into normalcy. Then it's a matter of how a person responds to this treatment, do you try to be diplomatic, back down so they back off or do you aggressively tell them to mind their own business - pick the wrong one and you'll get the shit kicked out of you every time. >> >> Unfortunatly, Utopia does not yet exist. Not over here and not over >> there either. >> Agreed. >> Sure, I'd have no trouble finding all the Gary Numan music >> I wanted >> Not sure about that, I never found the 12" of 'Stormtrooper in Drag' (if it exists). >> , but would I be able to find Macintosh Software? >> Never had a computer when in England, but I would say all the necessary software is available. >> Plus I >> understand getting a pizza delivered over there can be something of a >> problem. Hmmmm... >> Don't know, never used to eat pizza 'till I came here and discovered Pizza Hut. Perhaps we should take the episode of 'Men behaving badly' as evidence that they have to deliver on time or the customer gets it free. I did work for a firm that delivered Indian food and I think they had the same policy (if that's any indication). The service may differ depending on what part of England you live in. Well let the flood gates open.
