To: Gary Numan The Nottingham show was, as my long suffering non Numan loving wife said,= the best she ever seen (Ive dragged her along to the Warriors, Berserker Fury, Exhibition and Exile tours, the rest I had to go to alone). The vocals were clear and the sound powerful - the balcony shook! Gary was in= good form although he F***ked up Exile (his words) and started it again. The Friends version that started the show is my new favorite track, I hop= e that version gets to be released along with the new vocal. It was great t= o hear Tracks live again after so many years. Only one new song which was mumbled and didnt grab me on first hearing it (although I find most of Numans stuff are growers) The show ended one song early due to Sunday law= (what a strange country we live in). = What an experience! Rock City was sold out & therefore the atmosphere was great, though it did take a while to get going. En supported (last minute stand in apparently - so still no new material, although they did have a very interesting intro, based around the 'Orange Is The Future' advert!) which kept me happy as I think they're great. Trance beat mixed with some stunning guitar work by Steve Harris, (who must surely be the most talented/stylish guitar player Gary has ever had?). I'm certain that 'Voix' is the only track that Valerium missed of the list. Highlight tracks for me were, well all of them to be honest, with the exception of Cars, which I could have happily done without this time. The old stuff was great, as was the new. But no 'Noise Noise' or Absolution. I would swear though, that DITP was about the best version/performance I've ever seen of that track. It seemed incredibly powerful (even more so than usual!) & I think they had shifted the synth lines up a notch (sorry, that's the best way I can describe what I mean…. Help?). I Die You Die was also very, very powerful & received a great welcome back. We did get one new track, which was excellent. Or at least, sounded like it would/could be excellent eventually. It seems like it could be a left over track from the Exile sessions, rather than a new track from the next album. The words 'Fall Asleep' kept cropping up & I think he was singing something like 'falling asleep with/for me'. You could see that Gary was trying very hard with this track though & I think it may have made him slightly nervous, as he hashed up the following track, 'Exile'. He started singing the 1st verse, too soon & so scrapped it after about 30 seconds or so & started again (much the same as AFE in Paris last year). This was my friends first Numan concert, (I'm winning him over!) & he had a brilliant time. He really likes/prefers the newer material, but said it just didn't come across quite as well, live, as the older songs. He thought this was due to the new stuff (Exile) being very well produced studio wise & that the complexity & layers of the tunes/samples & effects didn't work as well live (his exception being Dark). I also think this has something to do with the different singing styles on the older songs. I'm sure they readjust Gary's microphone levels for the newer material (?). In the encores, they did 'You Are In My Vision', before which, Gary said he hoped he'd get the chords right, which he did seem to manage. Then they played 'Tracks' - this was for me the highlight of the concert! They seemed to play it reasonably close to the original too, which was refreshing. For the final encore, Gary said they had planned to play two numbers, but had been warned that they must finish by 2230, so they chose 'Jo The Waiter' - question is, what might the other one have been? Also, what would Rock City have done if he'd finished at 2235? Pulled the plug? Or maybe ban him from playing there again. For 'Jo The Waiter', Steve Harris played the lead guitar instead of Gary. Where we stood (at the front) there was constant clapping, cheering, head rocking etc. & the atmosphere was excellent. They light show did seem better that the SBE one off, but this could simply have been more effective as the general stage area was much smaller. It was a concert where as far as I could tell Gary was certainly enjoying himself immensely. Apparently they all wizzed off on the coach, for a party back at Gary's place, straight after the gig. Also, if this of any interest to any one, I found out that the 'Forum' venue, in London (which I and many others hadn't heard of) is what used to be, the 'Town & Country Club' (which I has heard of!). ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 22:04:25 PDT From: "Jim Napier" Subject: Gary Numan North American Fan Club To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello Numanoids Of The World! Well, it's happened! Just when I thought I had discovered every last reason to dig Gary Numan, out comes Exile Extended. Definitely worth the wait! First time I've used the Repeat CD button in years! WOOHOO! Can you say 'Machman Approved'? The personable Terrence Thoman raises an interesting question. That of royalty checks presented to him by those who broadcast his name and music. I'd like to say the recent Gary Numan radio marathon here in town made Gary rich, but WICB is commercial-free and funded by the college so I'm not sure they pay any royalties as they don't make a profit in their operation. But on the upside, I'll bet Gary made a mint due to the airing of 'Cars' on NBC's Conan o'Brien recently. My socks flew across the room when I saw Our Friend Electric simultaneously transmitted to millions of North American homes. Somacrow, it's true, when it comes to lyrics being used in magazine ads, Gary Numan's approval weighs much more heavily than even mine. Um,... uh.....Are we done calling attention to the obvious? I did some research on this about a year ago, and the information I turned up was basically this: 1) IRS went bust sometime in the early to mid 1990's. 2) Miles Copeland sold the back-catalogue to Capitol Records (whom I believe was his distributor previously) That means that if indeed any of the IRS (or Illegal Records) albums are to be re-released, they're gonna be on Capitol Records in both the UK and North America (assuming they choose to release 'em in both markets). IRS is history - unless, of course, they decide to revive the label (like Gary did with Numa Records after IRS bailed on him). Too bad... because, quite frankly, I'd be much happier with you folks at Cleopatra (and the good people at Eagle in the UK) handling this reissue than I would seeing some faceless megacorp doing it... Get The Numa Years boxed set, it's as close to a definitive Numa collection as we are likely to get for the foreseeable future. The first two CDs Receiver put out, The Other Side of GN and Here I Am were very useful because of the rarity at the time of Berserker, The Fury and Strange Charm on CD, but since then it has been total rehash. There are many mistakes on the liner notes as well. > From: theartdept@att.net (rod reynolds) > This cd is out of print. I used the same photo for the cover that Gary used on > the 1999 Eagle re-issue, but without the squiggly art design. The catalog > number is CLP 541. > May 25th? I have an exam on that day! Is this a good sign that something by Numan is released that day a good omen or the fact that it is M+S a bad omen? I'd have been a lot happier if it had been Berserker :-) I bought the UK reissue of Berserker the other day and I can confirm that it's the boxed set just repackaged. I knew because the matrix number on the two CDs are the same. I found out because there's a but of hiss when listening to it through headphones that isn't normally noticable on a normal hi-fi. I then put in box set Berserker and it did the same and just noticed the matrix numbers when putiing them back in the case. I think these reissues were aimed at people who only wanted a couple of the albums. And why is Berserker represented by the Exile logo? If any new fan who got hooked on Exile was just browsing saw this CD with the Exile logo thinking it was like Exile would be pretty surprised (although which way I don't know). But the situation is a two-sided thing. While I am disappointed that there's no new to CD tracks or versions, at least I don't have to buy them again. I managed to get Berserker exchanged for something else, claiming the left channel crackled :-). Nightmare for die-hard completists, however . Of course the one I really want to see reissued is Metal Rhythm, hopefully these rumours will come to fruition. I thought we could coverb Metal Rhythm as album of the month as there seems to be another lull. It's another one of those albums that doesn't seem to be very well liked amongst the Numan faithful, but I like it a lot (but not quite as much as Strange Charm). I'm fascinated to know why a lot of people don't like this one. Is it only the fact that it has female vocals/sax? Or the fact that it isn't Replicas/Telekon/Dance 2 ? A lot of people slate this period because the songs have lyrics like: I like this, I like that I don't like this, I don't like that I need this, I need that I don't need this, I don't need that I am this, I am that I'm not this, I'm not that I've been here, I've been there I've seen this, I've seen that I've heard this, I've heard that I'm tired of this, I'm tired of that and so on...No, I'm not trying to write Machine and Soul 2 :-) To me there's only "Voix" that has lyrics like this, and it seems to be one of the current live favourites. I believe this album is one of the most consistent Numan albums, with 10 very good tracks. The only one I'm not terribly keen on is "New Anger", and even that's still decent. Not my choice as a single though. Gary has made some big blunders but his first single release for 5 years on a big label should really have been more attention grabbing than that - a bit like having "Dominion Day" as the Exile single, although I think IRS made him put that one out. "America" was a much better single, that song is so anthemic, as are several songs on this album. "Hunger" is my particular favourite on this album, but it's hard to say why, except it's really bouncy and I love that synth solo towards the end, and the song reinds me of the Shreddies advert "Hunger strikes" ! :-) I'm not terribly keen on ballads, but "Don't Call My Name" is something else, one of the best closing tracks to an album ever, an great way to ease down after the aggression gone before. Also Gary's albums all start strongly and "This Is Emotion" is no exception. I find it hard to beleive that on the New Anger album they put these two tracks stuck in the middle - I don't have that album but I imagine it sound completely wrong. Also leaving "Hunger" off should be a criminal offence. Putting two Berserker tracks in seems illogical- I like Berserker a lot as well but not mixed together. So why exactly do a lot of people not like this album? Also, why do the people who do like it, like it? Opinions please! Metal Rhythm is definitely in my top 5. James ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 9:57:37 +0100 (BST) From: "Jon Garland" Subject: Rock City gig To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Rock City was absolutely packed for the first of Gary's 'one-off' shows of the year. The set opened with the revamped 'Friends' and continued with the usual mix of golden oldies & newies from the last two albums. Highlights of the set included a magnificent rendering of 'Dark' and a sparkling 'Exile' - which had to be stopped shortly after it began the first time as Gary 'fuckin' forgot' the words. It was amazing to hear the songs from 'Exile' greeted with such fervour, and it seems clear that these songs are loved by the Numan crowd just as much as the old ones. The light show, although not as spectacular as in the past, was still excellent, & occasionally the venue was dazzled by blinding white light from the stage, which illuminated the crowd and revealed the usual mixture of Goths, lookalikes & anoraks that seem strangely drawn to Gary. The main set ended with 'I Die: You Die' & the usual 'singalongaGary' AFE, & the encores - 'You Are in My Vision', 'Tracks' (marvellous to hear, tho' a bit ploddy) & 'Jo the Waiter' sent us of into the torrential rain outside truly buzzing. Disappointments? There was only one new song - a broody, dreamy slow-paced number that is an encouraging pointer of things to come. Other than that, it was a superb evening, with Gary in very high spirits. There was a fantastic atmosphere, as always nowadays, & once again a gig at Rock City was a triumph. I liked that = song (despite rather iffy production if I remember right). To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Although I'm not exactly an enthusiast of absolutely all things French, I think a French site would be an obvious mutation. Them Francs brought us these followin' people that I like to check in with, people like: Rene Magritte, Cassius, Jane Birkin, Jaques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, Air, Jean Cocteau, Stardust, the cave art in Lascaux, Daft Punk, la belle Francoise Hardy, Erik Satie, etc. Over 'n out. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ****************************** _______________________________________________________________________ _____ ____ ____ _____ _____ / \ | | / \ / \ / \ / \ | |-----| |-----| | |-----| |-----| | | | G | | A | | | R | | Y | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |-----| |-----| | |-----| |-----| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | N | E | W | S |=====| | | | | | | | & | | | | | | | \_____/ I | N | F | O | | | | is produced and distributed by Derek Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, mail to: numan@cs.uwp.edu If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, you can mail to numan-request@cs.uwp.edu ----------------- The Gary Numan Digest is brought to you via Datta Production and Development, 905 97th Street, Kenosha, WI 53143 USA datta@cs.uwp.edu and computer resources courtesy of University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Datta Production and Development.
