I liked that song >(despite >rather iffy production if I remember right). What happened to >it? You must be talking about the 1998 Cleopatra version of the Fury, since the 1999 Eagle version does have 'We Need It'. Thanks for buying it!! (and NOT complaining about the cover!!!) I love 'the Fury' album and would loved to have done it as a two cd set. There is more than enough material. Of course I was only allowed one disc, and it had to be less than 74 minutes. I wanted to put the extended version of both 'Your Fascination' and 'Call Out the Dogs' since they are arguably the best songs on the album and have significant differences in the extended mixes, but since I had put the extended 'Your Fascination' on Remodulate, I dropped it. I had the 12" version of 'I Still Remember' (RSPCA version) digitally mastered specifically for this release, and to my knowledge it is unavailable elsewhere on cd. I also really wanted to include 'Tribal' (demo version of 'Call Out the Dogs') even though it meant having three versions of COTD on the same cd. But it had never been released outside the fan club series. Cleopatra loved that. My disc was filling up rapidly. I used the original shorter vinyl version of the album, as opposed to the 96 Numa cd re-issue since I figured the original cd version was harder to find. So I had two tracks left and I had to choose amongst the handful of b-sides. It was difficult, but I feel I chose the best two. I think 'Anthem' is really cool, and 'The Fear' fits in nicely. >From: "James Chapman" >Subject: Replies, Reissues and Metal Rhythm > >> The Cleopatra version of Berserker is due to be released May 4th in the US. >> The four bonus tracks are different from the 1999 Eagle release. >> > Anything new to CD? No. I had several ideas for rare b-sides (in fact I had some remastered for the project) but they were rejected by Gary himself. I went with extended versions of 'Berserker' and 'My Dying Machine', the two main singles, and the b-sides 'Empty Bed, Empty Heart' and 'Here Am I'. Ho hum. One of the tracks I wanted to use was the William Orbit remix of 'My Dying Machine' which I think is really cool, plus the fact that Orbit had just produced the new Madonna album. How great would it have been to have a sticker on the front saying "featuring My Dying Machine remixed by William Orbit"!! But Gary said no. So there you go. Which then led into the IRS discussion with Cleopatra... >From: "Joey Lindstrom" >Subject: IRS & Capitol Records > >Miles Copeland sold the back-catalogue to Capitol Records (whom I >believe was his distributor previously) > >That means that if indeed any of the IRS (or Illegal Records) albums >are to be re-released, they're gonna be on Capitol Records in both the >UK and North America (assuming they choose to release 'em in both >markets). IRS is history - unless, of course, they decide to revive >the label (like Gary did with Numa Records after IRS bailed on him). > It is hard to say what exactly Miles Copeland sold... select titles or the entire catalog... and did he license them or sell them outright... In the timeline this is where Brian (Perera of Cleopatra) said he'd ask Miles about the Numan material. I had asked about doing a 'singles' or 'extended' album and including the (out of print) IRS singles... I believe currently ALL the IRS material it out of print, including the Go-Gos, English Beat, and General Public. There is a demand for this material, and I'd heard that the English Beat stuff was coming out on Capitol (in the US). But it's impossible to say if they are going to release ALL the titles, or even if they have licensed (or own) them all. To me it seems doubtful that they would put the three Numan titles out in the US. They didn't do that well the first time out. We know Gary wasn't happy with them (read Praying to the Aliens) and assuredly they weren't happy with him. It's all conjecture at this point, however. I don't know. Miles has also developed a new label, assuredle he *could* have taken his IRS catalog with him, but didn't. A few months ago Gary announced on his web site that the IRS albums were coming out. No dates or locations... and we know he has the tendency to jump the gun a bit... Even Cleopatra isn't keen any more on the Numan catalog... or singles packages or rarities or covers albums... they told me "enough with the Gary Numan". The three new re-issues are coming out ('Strange Charm', 'Berserker' May 4, 'Machine + Soul' May 25), and I'm working (slowly) on 'Ghost' as they're in no hurry for a third double live album. I wouldn't hold my breath for 'Dream Corrosion' as in my opinion the cover art is horrible and the sound quality even worse. I think they are waiting for the new album for a boost in energy (and sales). Six months ago they were talking about having a new album in April and then a summer tour. Little do they know how long the wait might be... I seriously doubt they'd be interested in *another* three old albums that never sold much the first time around. But you never know. >From: "James Chapman" >Subject: Replies, Reissues and Metal Rhythm > >And why is Berserker represented by the Exile logo? If any new fan >who got hooked on Exile was just browsing saw this CD with the Exile >logo thinking it was like Exile would be pretty surprised (although >which way I don't know). > The Exile logo is on all five of the Eagle re-issues; each of the discs has the same design. >Nightmare for die-hard completists, however . Yes, in the past year or so we have faced... let's see: Exile (UK) Exile (US) Random (2 discs) The Mix Remodulate (2 discs) Living Ornaments (2 double sets) White Noise re-issue Pleasure Principle re-issue Telekon re-issue Replicas re-issue Tubeway Army re-issue Dominion Day singles (2 UK, one US) Dawn Magic single Sacrifice re-issue (US) The Fury re-issue (US) Exile Extended (UK) Numa Years box set (5 discs) Sacrifice re-issue (Eagle) The Fury re-issue (Eagle) Dark Light re-issue Exile Extended (US) Strange Charm re-issue (Eagle) Berserker re-issue (Eagle) Machine and Soul re-issue (Eagle) Strange Charm re-issue (US) Berserker re-issue (US) Machine and Soul re-issue (US) and for the lucky ones: concert tickets, t-shirts, tour booklets, etc... Not to mention this phenomenon called the internet through which I have acquired (from Europeans, and at no small costs): Sharpe + Numan Automatic cd Sharpe + Numan I'm on Automatic cd single Radio Heart cd Radio Heart All Across the Nation cd single (still looking for Bill Sharpe's Famous People of which I only have a cd-r) My Numan collection has increased by 38 cds in the past year and a half. I dare not tally up at what expense!! I was reading the release book for Caroline (distributor for Cleopatra in the US) with the pop buyer for a major L.A. record store, and the page for one of the new releases says "Gary's 14th studio album originally released on his own UK label" and he just laughed. "14th studio album!! As far as I'm concerned he had one single from one album. And that was almost 20 years ago." And this guy is a friend and knows of my involvement... Just to show what "we're" up against... He did order five copies, however... I've asked Gary at least three times, including once in person, for bonus tracks and out take photos for the re-issues. But no dice, even though he gave photos to Eagle for the box set and their re-issues. I have repeatedly approached Cleopatra with new ideas, but they aren't interested. The music store product buyers don't care. Even some of the die hard fans I know in L.A. don't buy the re-issues. They say "it's not worth it for one or two new songs". It's very disheartening... But thank you for the many letters of support and thanks I have received from random people on this list. Sometimes when I'm feeling discouraged about my situation I'll get a letter from someone who just bought 'Remodulate' and "listens to it every day at work" and thinks the photos are great. I see a copy of 'the Mix' is on eBay at $22+ (what are you thinking, it's a $15.98 cd!!) but it's cool that someone wants it that bad. Something I made!! (not that that has anything to do with it ;o) (Plus the 'Cars' J Lab mix and the 'Are Friends Electric' Leather Strip mix are great!) Bye for now. That dark rolling tubular sound at the very beginning of the song sound's lifted right off the Telekon album. Well I listened to Empty Bed... and every track off Telekon and I just can't hear it. As a whole I get a different atmosphere from Telekon to Empty Bed, I've been listening to other albums and it doesn't really fit with the one's I listened to either, although I remember hearing some of the sounds on other tracks, at first I thought it was The Fury, but it's not. I'd have to listen to all my Numan to find the sound, which I fully intend to do. I know there are people who know exactly which instrument Gary used on each track, and which synth he was using. I don't know myself, but I think he was still using the same synths on Empty Bed to Telekon and Dance, so there are still sounds in the background that are the same I'm sure. >The melody is dark like Telekon as well. When I first bought Telekon I read the lyrics on the bus and I got a humorous first feel for it and I think the a lot of the album is fast paced. I'm not sure what comparison you're making when you say dark. Dark compared to other Numan I presume you mean, n'est pas? Telekon uses a lot of violins and dance has a real funky sound to it I think. I can certainly hear a tubular sound in Empty Bed, but it doesn't remind me of Dance or Telekon when I listen to it. It may be because Telekon was the first tour I went to and I listened to it over and over before hearing Empty Bed, I saw Berserker 6 times as well, mind you he didn't play Empty Bed. Has Gary played Empty Bed on any of his tours since 1990? >To put it in your word's, "haunting". Perfect analogy! :) Well thank you kindly. I thought maybe if there was a particular track off Telekon that most sounds like Empty Bed for you, I might be able to get where your coming from. I know different people get different feelings from each album and I often wonder what it is they hear that I don't. It's all so fascinating. errora wrote They're watching MTV. On comes Gary under the neon pyramid. "Cars". It proved three things to me: 1) People in the USA still have to deal with Numan 2) Mainstream shitforbrains don't know who he is 3) If they do know who he is, it's only because of "Cars" Butt-head: Is this guy David Bowie? Beavis: He's a puss...but a different puss. Butt-head: He's andropolos. Beavis: He said "penis." That's a relief I would be worried if they liked Numan, they're supposed to represent losers with questionable tastes and morals. I love the show, hasn't been on here for ages. Is it OK to put the whole track or a clip on the website in mp3 format. Or will I have to get permission from certain parties first. The track uses all of Numan's original vocals but I've rearranged the music. If anyone could give me any advice it would be gratefully appreciated. There's normally at least 20-25 Numan related items offered at any given time. Buyer beware. Items offered for auction at Ebay are not screened for authentication, legality, etc. I've seen CR-R copies offered, Multiple-generation video tapes, and the like. There was some discussion about a questionable Numan autographed item recently in this digest. Also, why > do the people who do like it, like it? Opinions please! > I recently bought a copy of New Anger. I think this is the best of the I.R.S. bunch. This material was mostly new to me though I had heard some of it on The Skin Mechanic. I like all of the tracks to varying degrees, New Anger being the favorite which kind of surprises me. I wasn't really too impressed with the live version on Skin Mechanic. There's really a lot energy in this song and I don't think it came out very well live. Also I think generally, the female backing vocals are much cleaner on the studio version of a lot of Gary's material during the time he used them extensively. The one thing I really disliked was the skimpy information in the CD-liner 'booklet'. An inaccurate description of a 4-panel piece of glossy paper. Almost no information beyond the required legal notices. I'm sure Gary had no control over this given the stories of his relationship with I.R.S. Don't Call My Name is very reminiscent of Heart from 'Outland'. I wouldn't be surprised to be told these songs were written within minutes of one another. I like both of these songs, so I'm pleased to have both of them now. Overall, a good album. I'd be interested to here some discussion on the differences between NA and Metal Rythm since I don't have the latter. -- Don't you know you're talking to the heart of the machine? Two bonus tracks off of Sacrifice, "Play at God" and "Metal Beat" are two of Gary's coolest songs, but no lyrics are included. I can't quite get all of the lyrics - anyone know a website that might have the lyrics to these songs? Thanks. I bought Exile in October last year and at one point reported that "Dominion Day" was my favorite track. I've come to my senses. Although "DD" is an excellent song, IMHO, "An Alien Cure" is one of the best songs that Gary has ever written. Rumour was correct about the songbook. If I remember correctly, it was published in the UK in the very early 80's and was virtually impossible to find not long after. I'll have a punt around and see if I can find mine. If Gary/Tony/Beryl read this digest, maybe you could think of publishing the individual song sheets. Paper, electronic, autographed or whatever would be interesting. Cheap to do perhaps ? Another question re: I Nearly Married a Human P2. It was the second B-side track of DITP 12" (BEG17T). Do you need the service ? was the other track. This is one of my all time fave covers....Reflection of Gary in window with moon behind. There's not much to shout about that track though as it's only difference was a simple murmuring of the title line. I'd be surprised if it's not on one of the dozens of compilation CD's somewhere. Nearly a week late, but, my thoughts on the Rock City gig last weekend are: Excellent venue major buzz as always to see Gary huge energy pumped out renditions of older songs were far clearer, especially on the vocal...that's not cos I'm stuck on the older tunes, the news ones really do it for me too, but, partly cos of the mutli-layer nature of the tracks (did you catch the backing track when gazza stopped the band part-way-thru' Exile?.is it really necessary for the live set ?) but also because Gary's voice is much better in the higher octaves. Lower octaves disappear into the vast sound and energy. I'm not sure the desk turn him down, I just think his voice isn't as strong. If they turn him up too much, it's feedback city. Remember when he lost his voice a few years ago ?? Definite joy to hear 'tracks' The new 'friends' (20th Anniv mix ??) opening track is an absolute killer. How about that on the new LP and perhaps even as a single ? I don't care if it's not exactly new...the rework is awesome. Imagine some even bigger club mixes ?? Definitely a Homer woo-hoo there.. A great gig but IMO not his best ever. I think he needs a tour to get fully revved up. Ade was better than I expected as support. really enjoyed that one Mr Harris is excellent too. Definitely good for Gary's music Finally, someone mentioned " asking Miles Copeland" about releasing some stuff. I may be reaming, but, I thought he died a year or so back ??
