Dear Tom, The order for the cd goes back to the 'Asylum 2' box set that was released in Japan. It had this same order. Then, when BB released their double-disc sets a few years ago, they again used this order. I don't know why they chose this order. It's as if they want us to think they recorded the first side of the album, then put on "We Are Glass" then flipped the record and recorded the other side. Come on, though, we know they were using master tapes, not a vinyl! Cds, though, are programmable, of course. You could just take a moment and tell your player how you'd like it to play the disc. And as long as they were going to muck about with the order, here's how I would've programmed it: 1. Down In The Park (piano) 9. I'm An Agent 2. This Wreckage 10. I Dream of Wires 3. The Aircrash Bureau 11. Remember I Was Vapour 4. Telekon 12. Please Push No More 5. Remind Me To Smile 13. The Joy Circuit 6. I Die: You Die 14. Photograph 7. A Game Called 'Echo' 15. We Are Glass 8. Sleep By Windows 16. Trois Gymnopedies (first movement) Cds should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. And I still think of them in terms of a first side and a second side. So, while we're on the subject, here's how I would've programmed 'Strange Charm': 1. I Can't Stop 5. My Breathing 2. The Sleeproom 6. Unknown and Hostile 3. The Need 7. This is Love 4. New Thing From London Town 8. Strange Charm And, 'Exile': 1. Dominion Day 5. Innocence Bleeding 2. Prophecy 6. An Alien Cure 3. Dead Heaven 7. The Angel Wars 4. Dark 8. Exile (bonus track: 9. Absolution) Okay, I'm done being silly. If you'll notice, I did say: "Numan was the singular pioneer of the New Romantic SOUND." I didn't say he pioneered their look. My name is Jonathan and I send you greetings wherever you live. I am a new man on this list and I hope to learn more to know about Gary Numan - and I hope that you all excuse me for my bad english grammar. First I heard Gary on a party, it was "Are friends electric?". I liked the sound but I hated the voice. After hearing that song three or four times more I loved his voice too. This was 1980! After this I have bought all records and now all CDs. After a big burn I lost my whole collection and I have had a lot of records, also singles and so one like "Bombers" etc. Now I just have some CDs and nothing more. I am not sad about it, because I could save my life otherwise. A good deal in my opinion. ;-) I am also still felt in love with Garys lyrics and some songs of him like: "Down in the Park" (I always and still look for the music notes of this great song!) "Bombers" "Dominion Day" "This is my house" "Voix" "Down in the Park - Piano Version" (I have had this great version on a single, but now it is lost. Is existing a mp3 or something like that?) "This is new Love" "Warriors" ... and a lot of other songs. I don't like very much the album "The Fury". I think nobody is able to produce only good songs, some has to be bad. BUT Gary is the best, that's clear. ;-) So I send all my best wishes to you outside there... Jonathan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 May 1999 11:37:45 +0100 From: "Gary Hough" Subject: Bits and Pieces To: The New Romantics scene was made popular IMHO by designers Khan and Bell. Jayne Khan was the designer who put together clothes for Tik and Tok (Was also Tok's girlfriend for a while) Spandau Ballet, Visage and Steve Strange, Imagination, Duran, Stranglers, Adam Ant, Ultravox, etc. etc. Unlike Punk the New Romantics scene was very much manufactured, in that most from that era bought their clothes off the shelf. Khaniverous based finally in Hyper Hyper Kensington High Street, London was a brilliant place to get your gear from. I have Tok's Zebra jacket and shirt as well as a number of other items from TnT's career including Tiks Jump-suit that he wore on stage at Wembley with Gary (remember Shock anyone)and the workmanship and detail that went into this gear was amazing. Jayne Khan was the single most influential designer and one of the most under-rated in the industry. How the Fuck Vivian Westwood achieved so much recognition over Jayne I'll never know, despite Vivians influence on Punk. Steve Strange was lucky in that he opened up Campden Palace which gave him a shop window. Blitz was the place to go though. On the subject of re-issues, Ghost should not be re-issued at anything more than Nice Price. I agree totally with other posts in the last digest that a new live album (Preferably from Glasgow as they have the best atmosphere bar none) should be put out at the very least. Not sure if Gary had any control over the BBC release but if he's concerned at artistic integrity as someone suggested then that one CD is a total insult to fans bar none. Year of the Child included or not. Gary is a business not a charity and he has to make money somehow but not at the expense of all these re-hashes surely. Rather than promote these he should distance himself from them unless when he sold the rights to the songs he also included his artistic integrity in the deal. He's getting as bad as the Damned (And that's saying something) for the constant regurgitated crap that keeps on coming out. I don't believe any of the nonsense that is "Well how are new fans going to get copies of Gary's recordings". They can do what we all did, Collect the originals, christ knows there is plenty of it about now that Gary's popularity has dropped. When Dance came out, I don't know how many fans gave up on him at that point, I know most of my mates did and I was one of the main Numan fans on the scene at that time as were they. I loved Dance, still do and for me was one of his best albums. He took a huge chance with this album with it's funk influence over Machine style that he had become so popular with. Don't make the mistake of following your instincts and cashing in with all these re-releases and alienating the fans still left. Lets see some new, decent stuff for a change. We will all buy the new releases as much as we would go for the re-issues so there is no excuse. I and many others could be totally wrong at trying to guess Gary's contractual and artistic integrity and I apologise to Gary in advance if I am wrong, but one thing I don't think I am wrong about is that if this keeps on happening and numerous re-hashes of older stuff goes on He can kiss goodbye to all the good work done over the last couple of years because I will give up as will others. I have never missed a gig nor a release since Tubeway army played the pubs in 1978, how many can say that isn't loyalty eh ;-) Regards Gary Hough www.madasafish.com "Freedom for the Net Generation" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 May 1999 12:18:43 -0700 (PDT) From: Jay Ruiz Subject: CARS To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi Christina, The album (CD whatever) you're looking for is the NEW release of "Obsolete" The standard CD came out about a year or so ago, and the NEW one is kind of a...re-release, with Bonus tracks. I am not going to get on the Gary-can-do-no-wrong bandwagon but as a U.S. fan starving so long to see him perform live and nearly feeling for the longest time that I was the only one (before I discovered the online fandom) I believe I understand why he chose the list. > Gary insists he's not interested in revivalism, but then admits on stage > that he's going to play a lot of old stuff to keep people happy. How about There was a great deal of concern over whether his non-UK fans still cared. He could not have known, nor could Cleopatra, that he had never lost us. It was a wise move on his part to mix it up. > Who knows, if he actually dropped all that old stuff, the press > MIGHT get interested in the new songs. As it is, you can hardly blame It is just as, if not more, important to have a solid fandom than good press. He has a lot of old fans but a great many new ones as well who might be very interested in hearing the old stuff for the first time. > The reason the set list wasn't changed greatly was to avoid the time and > expense of rehearsing lots of new songs. That's understandable although, I disagree. Gary played those songs in an entirely new and thrilling way. I could never tire of hearing the most recent live versions of AFE & DINTP. That kind of revamping took rehearsal. And keep in mind that it is sometimes harder to remember the old stuff than the stuff still fresh in the mind. Yeah, I kinda chuckled and rolled my eyes a bit during Cars but when a bunch of us got together and played kazoos to it in the front row of the next show, it became something fun and funny. > If Gary can't be bothered then I might just not bother Your choice, of course. But I can say with certainty that he bothered. A great deal. Very few of us know just how terrified he was about playing in the States after so long. The first show, he half expected to come out to a pitiful little group rather than a packed house. > How about this for a set list? > > Bleed > The Angel Wars > Prophecy > A Question Of Faith > The Seed Of A Lie > Dark > Magic > etc. I love it. And the next tour will hopefully include these and well as his newest material. Now that he knows that he still has us, he can play pretty much what he pleases and he always favors his newest stuff as does any artist. As for myself, I will always listen. Regardless. Released on IRS records, its now out of print and hard to find-- happy hunting! As a side note, the Boys Like Us have been discussing on our own digest what obscure live versions are out there, and "America" appears in a live recording (complete with a little surprise ending) on one of the Receiver/Rialto compilations, 'Here I Am.' That disc also includes a live rendition of "Confession." For all that Receiver/Rialto have been maligned here, they did provide those songs in a live format, that otherwise don't appear on any of Gary's live albums, and it may be easier to find than the 'Metal Rhythm' album. Additionally, for the true completist, another of their compilation discs, 'Archive', contains a live recording of Gary's cover of (the artist's) "U Got The Look." The envelope read as follows: Troy, please pass this on to Kat & all the USA buddies we made friends with (via Kat). I honestly do not know why Gemma wrote the last the way she did as I was certainly not responsible for anyone else's fortune to have befriended her. Perhaps it was a reminder to pass the card to me knowing that I would pass it on to you guys. It was silly fate that I only received this days ago. The card itself reads: For Kat and all our USA mates, Have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS, Loads of love, Gemma and Gary, XXXX I would like to ask all that have (or are going to) post the JPEG of this card on their sites to email me and let me know so that I can post a list of URLs in a future digest so that all can see and enjoy the card.
