I was trying to edit my rambling offer to say that when Gary's voice is low in pitch, it is also low in volume, and that the sound engineers need to be apprised of that and be prepared for it. Then I must have pressed the wrong key. I was going to go on to say that, even though we can all find fault with anything, the gig was FUN. If we have got to the point where we have to measure everything up to the most memorable moments of Gary's career, and decry everything that falls short, is life worth living? In my view, my life **is** worth living, for although I am a lowly form of life, I get pleasure from Gary's music and from being with hundreds of other fans all loving the gigs. I think there was some banter a while back about Strange Charm, Machine And Soul, Berserker, The Fury. Although I scroll past all the "favourite tracks and albums and worst etc." that in recent times has tended to clog up the Digest; I feel a few words here would be fitting. Being one of those chaps who usually steers clear of public artistic criticism - believing that if you don't like something, fair enough then just don't listen to it, don't look at it, don't eat it, but for fuck's sake don't annoy the rest of us with your whining - I STILL think they are fucking great albums. Maybe because I'm listening to them for the first time in 4 years. Especially when you measure them up against the total shite which is being paraded by MTV and other sinister forces as THE music to listen to, the music what makes you (seem) cool. Let's face it, Numan produces great songs. And if you need proof: "Strange Charm" sends my girlfriend's budgie apeshit. And she reckons that NTFLT is a top aerobics track. But then, she's Russian ... So there. No more Numan bashing. It's boring anyway. Personally I think it would have been more appropriate to package the disks without the Exile logo plastered over everything. I mean, it was introduced with the Exile album, so why apply it to much earlier stuff? Maybe I'm stupid, but I just don't get it. Guess it was less expensive to use the same image for everything. Call me old fashioned but I would've simply put Gazza's pouting mug on every CD, reflecting whatever image he was into at the time of its release. But that's just me. And I know the set is only those albums produced under the Numa banner but then there's this weird chronological hole where non-Numa releases "Metal Rhythm, Automatic" and "Outland" should be ... the designers could've left blanks so we could fit them in? Firstly, Sam wrote "..... I find very little difference in the songs because of that backing loop. They all sort of bleed together in my mind. I like the lyrics when I read them in the booklet, but by and large, I find I don't understand them when I listen on my Discman. Either he's mumbling, or his voice is buried in the mix (or both)"........... Sam, I totally agree. I too read the booklet on my way home when I first got Exile, and was pretty impressed with the direction that Gary's lyric was going. However, they are so damn difficult to follow unless you've got the obligatory degree after 20 years studying at the University of Numan. That's Ok for me, but when I try and bestow the virtues of the new tunes to my wife (who is normally really patient), she just has to give up or ask me what he's singing about. She can follow no problem the ballads where the mix is not as thick as his voice stands out far better. Now, I love Gary's distinctive voice ...always have done. And, I believe he can actually sing, contrary to some opinions. What a shame that he does seem to bury it and thus lose the impact of the lyric too. (And please don't tell me you can hear the lyrics much better with the remastered versions on a college p.c....sorry, couldn't resist that one). As I think I put before regarding the Nottingham gig: when he sings in the lower octave, he does disappear into the shear power and depth of the music. Yet the older, and somewhat simpler tunes e.g. Tracks (great to hear that again), ..Disconnect, Metal, You are in My Vision, etc have a much easier to grasp lyric, which, IMHO is due to the simpler mix and his better singing in the upper ranges. Just wondering, but, I hope it's not a confidence 'thing' that Gary has regarding his singing or songwriting. If so, the Gary, get a grip, be proud of the work you're now doing. It knocks spots off the competition by far ! Second thing: Did anyone get the desktop themes as advertised in Digest 536 ? I did and am still laughing ? They are fantastic !..."flow my tears, watch it grow before your eyes, no more no more"....it goes on. The best has got to be the shut down. It wasn't as simple as indicated to get though. What I don't really know is if there is a linear > story to tell or whether it's just a lot of images. Has anyone > connected a tale from the lyrics? Well, it's a lot easier if you take out Absolution, IMO. ISTR Gary saying that he included Absolution because it fits in with the rest of Exile, but I don't think it does. When I want to listen to "the album", I allow Absolution to be played, but when I want to listen to "Exile", Absolution is dropped from the play list. If that makes any sense. Anyway, to the point - the way I interpret it, looking at each song in turn, in some cases the lyrics don't quite fit, but on the whole I think this works. To start with, what (iirc) Gary has said is that it's about a man who dreams that heaven and hell are one, etc, and eventually realises that what he dreamed was the truth. (He probably said a touch more than that, but that's enough. Opening with the lyrics "In my darkness, I hear/see.. [etc]" I see that as the "dream" part of the above, "In my darkness" being "In my sleep" Changing to "In his darkness", rather than "my" is the beginning of the realisation of the truth. By the time we get to "My soul, save me" the transformation from dream to truth is complete - that line is probablyan exclamation (like "oh my god!" which would be wholly inappropriate in the context. :-) The third verse is essentially realising what this demonic god has in store. The chorus bits are the actual words spoken by "god" in the dream. The songs "Prophecy" (which happens to be one of my favorites) and "Dead Heaven" are simply where the man is evangelising the truth, I think. I could just picture a scene in a film where someone is stood on a pedestal before a disbelieving crowd, shouting the words to the first of these two, set against a dark background and a sky with the red look of the red bits in the inlay (just for a bit of atmosphere ;-) The next song, "Dark" is in two parts, the first being the man talking to God through one of his minions, the second God talking through his minion to the man - it kind of puts me in mind of a pre-big fight thing, where the two opponents go on film saying how they're going to win, they're the best, etc. So, this song is the prelude to a fight in the story itself - hence it being a minion, and not the big guy. "Innocence Bleeding" is just more evangelising of the true nature of God/Heaven/etc. In "The Angel Wars" the man is talking to God - perhaps he has just destroyed another minion (or it's the one above) and he is, in effect, using this victory to send a message to his ultimate opponenet. I see "An Alien Cure" as a sort of interlude. The man has been trying to tell people the truth about their god, and fought some of his minions, and seems to be getting nowhere. He is becoming disillusioned with his "mission" and, possibly, even going slightly delusional/crazy - perhaps "in the real world" people have believed him to be so, and at some stage had him committed to an institution, from which he escaped (just to pad the story out a little further). This song being set just after this, where he is wandering aimlessly. Perhaps in this messed up state he becomes as bad as the thing he is fighting - "I took a virgin like Mary, and said I give you the one.." Rape? Lines such as "So I looked deeper into evil, and I came closer to heaven, your heaven" seem to be the man gradually realising/remembering the truth again through his becoming like the enemy. The song closes with "And I walked into heaven, into dead paradise" - he has been killed, and must now face god himself. (Since it is at the end of "AAC", perhaps he was killed while on the run from the law?) Finally, "Exile". Having been killed, the man is initially in a slightly confused state, where he is remembering the dream and the realisation of the truth - his recollections being broken by the voice of God ("you will pray..etc"). The rest of the song is what God is saying to him, having now got the man in his clutches. (ie, the big evil dude has won.) An alternative interpretation of the last song, is that having been killed, he is now invading someone else's dream and telling them his story (which would make the "It said.." lines fit) so that they may carry on his fight - in other words, leaving it open for a sequel :-) Dunno about anyone else, but I think Exile would make a good film. Anyone want to pay me for the rights to my interpretation? ;-) VinceH -- WebChange2 sprite competition: http://www.softrock.co.uk/compete.html WebChange2 betatesting: http://www.softrock.co.uk/betatests/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 May 1999 07:58:20 +0100 From: vickers@netcomuk.co.uk Subject: Gary's camera To: Gary Numan Gary's camera may have been stolen by regular thieves who may regularly invade Rock City. I'm 30, live in Bath, UK and I've been listening to Numan since '79 when I learnt to play "Cars" on a homemade synth, driving my parents mad in the process! I play guitar and keyboards, both badly, and now I've got myself a nasty, nasty PC, I intend to start messing about recording stuff, just for a laugh. I went to a few Numan gigs in the late 80s/early 90s - not the best time to see him, I know, but I'm more a fan of his recorded stuff than his live shows, anyway. The best gig I went to was the last night of the Dream Corrosion tour. Simply amazing. It's a pity that the sound quality of the Dream Corrosion CDs was so bad. It's a pity that Cleopatra and Eagle can't see fit to reissue it. If it were remastered it would sound OK, as even the video's sound quality is considerably better than the original CDs. Or how about a DVD reissue of the video, even? (Yes, I realise how naive that sounds!) As for the Numan records I like best: the two proper Tubeway Army LPs, Telekon and Strange Charm. OK, not Strange Charm, but in its defence, "My Breathing" and "Strange Charm" more than make up for the rest of the er... "filler" on it! I find the version of "I Can't Stop" on "Strange Charm" unlistenable. It's not a bad chorus, but there is a limit to how many times you can hear it in the space of several minutes. Anyway, I think I've said enough for my first posting. Back then it was cool on the digest to slag Trent Reznor, Now it's Marilyn Manson. I bought all of these guys albums because they confessed in various articles that they where inspired by Gary Numan, so I thought since these guys had great taste in music I should buy their albums (I'm not suggesting anyone else should do this). One of the things I enjoyed about Gary's music when I was younger was that it was angry, weather it was real or put on, it was angry. That's why I enjoy Manson IMO he is to the 90's what Gary was to the 80s, and admittedly what Alice Cooper was to the 70's. I remember once someone writing to the digest, and they wrote something to the effect that they listened to Gary's music because of some of the homosexual themes in his lyrics, and because it helped him in his feelings of being in outsider. I very much had the same experience listening to Gary's music. Although I'm not gay, I am an atheist, and growing up in American it seems religion is forced down your throat (is it this way in England? My impression is that it's not, and the English seem to be more forward thinkers in this regard). Gary's music in the 80's was the only music I remember to challenge people to think beyond the box... Basically there is no God. Trent, and especially Manson are also fellow atheist, but Manson gets in your face and not only tells you that religion is superstition, but also leads to fascism. Of course this is all just IMO at 5 am in the morning. Well got that off my chest. Chris "Move upside, let the man go through." To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello again all, how have you been? Just getting back recently from an internet deprived two months, and I'm quite relieved to be back. On the setlist front, I think Gary should keep "Cars" and "Are 'Friends' Electric" in his shows. First off, all casual fans who go to his shows definitely know and like those two songs, and most of the fanatical remember them as the hint that led them to solve the crime. I've only seen Gary once {I'm 23 and live in the US}, and I freaked out when I heard AFE. I imagine i still will the next time I see him, even though I generally don't listen to "Replicas" that much anymore {which, as we all know, generally happens when you listen to any album day-in-day-out for a year}. Of course, I would like to hear songs from every chapter of Gaz's swingin' songbook {Um, maybe ignoring M+S} especially choice selections from the NUMA years. Actually, I would dearly love to hear a reworked "War Songs", and many/most of the 81-92 period would be excellent reworked. Just think of it - no sax, no girl singers, plenty of room for guitar and synth to go overboard, heavy drum loops, everythin Gaz is into now applied to that material. Also, a longer show would be much better. The neihborhood of two and a half hours looks inviting. Okay, now on to the artwork. Joey Lindstrom criticised the hostile statements made by some other digesters, and I agree with him completely. So, here is the basic horrible crime that Cleopatra and Eagle have committed. Because of those awful people WE CAN BUY ALL OF GARY'S ALBUMS BY GOING INTO A STORE AND LOOKING FOR THEM. We pay normal price too. the mercenaries. The only real complaint i have with the Cleopatra series {two, actually} - The "Berserker" cover looks horrible on the rerelease. I LOVE the original - the BLUE and white one, not purple and white. It also looks terribly cheap. The bonus tracks aren;t much either - I think they should have mirrored the box set version. On the brighter side, Rod, you did a fabulous job with all of your dedication and research. Thumbs off, hats up, etc. Really though, you made "Strange Charm" look like a real album, and althouh there wasn't much that you could do to save "The Fury" cover, you did your best. And thank you VERY much for removin both the naff handwriting on that, and the not-so-flattering grumpy shot from "Machine and Soul". Lastly, I just want to say that I cannot wait for the rerelease of "Dance", and the other BB albums. Let's hope that the extended "We Take Mystery to Bed" is on the rarities disc {or ANY cd for that matter}. I just found that 12", and it's my favorite version by far. Rob, >I found the choice of songs spot on Call me a banana, but when Gary goes on about the fact that he has writte= n 765 songs, I find it a little strange that he plays the same 20 all the time. I won't relay my girlfriends comments because they are fucking rude. James Chapman, OK James, I won't buy a ticket. There, that'll teach me. Gosh! what a foo= l I've been. Fuck, I've had enough. I confess! I wish Gary would pull out his Minimoog= and do a set of "synth" (Gack!) classics. He could even play Vienna and Enola Gay. God, I would piss myself with excitement. Arghh! The 21st century is trying to seduce me. No fuck off! Leave me alo= ne with my floppy disks and vinyl. I want to go back to ma! Sob, sob... = P.S. The Smashing Pumpkins played a live set almost exclusively from thei= r last album and it was fantastic. But then, Billy Corgan has the courage o= f his convictions. >Wasn't the Isolate Tour the last one before Dream Corrosion (ie the = >last one where he sang mainly new stuff at the time and only a few = >old songs)? You can't have it both ways. = Whilst this sounds vaguely offensive, you'll have to explain what it mean= s, cos I'm a bit thick. However, it might be relevant to say that I think th= e 1993 tour was superb, which I suspect makes your comment pointless. Let me recap my position. Gary want respect. Gary play Cars in Las Vegas for next 40 years. Gary not get what Gary want. And I'm really bored now... Although I'll just add that's its a BIG consolation to know that Gary can= still gain the same respect as The Human League, Boy George and New Order= if he is only sensible and keeps playing Are "Friends" Electric. Can SOMEONE please give me a serious argument!!! Since no one has, it wou= ld appear that I was probably right. Someone said: >Cars is GN's trademark. Take it away and anyone who's not a hardcore fan= would >say Why did I even buy the ticket? Well that is so fucking sad isn't it? Is Gary really THAT bad. I used to think that Gary was an entertaining performer, not some hack fucking jukebox. >if they [Gary & Gemma] are both (or at least Gary) devout atheists, why >would they be wishing us all a Merry Christmas? Joey Lindstrom : I agree with you about Rod and the artwork. The Mix, White Noise, Dominion Day and especially Remodulate were top-class. The only one that was slightly suspect was The Fury but that cover has always sucked, at least they tried to do something with it. But I was very pleased with "I Still Remember" 12" and "Tribal" which I hadn't previously heard so I was still very happy with the end product! I'll be getting Strange Charm soon, and I'm fascinated to see what that's like , but I actually quite like the original cover for some odd reason! And about M+S - hey I'd like to know how to get advance copies :-) Ian Blair: thanks for the reassurance! Only 5 weeks to go! Philip Lindsay: I like your style - more from I, Assassin, Warriors, Strange Charm and Metal Rhythm, although we have had quite a bit from MR on live releases. I'm sure Gary could do songs from this period perfectly well without the women, like I reckon a live version of "I Can't Stop" could be kick-ass but I reckon that would be the time when everyone else goes for a piss :-) The thing is everyone has different tastes so I think Gary tries to stick with what the fans like best: ie AFE and "Cars", "I Die:You Die", DITP among a few otheres. The few people who don't like them will have to lump it :-) Sam Warren: Any luck with Ghost? I have to agree about Sac v Exile - Exile sounds better, has better drum loops, better produced than Sacrifice but the music itself I feel holds pattern too much. I remember when I got Exile it took me quite a few listenings before I could recall in my mind what each song was like, rather than the album as a whole. If we had the music of Sacrifice with the production of Exile, that would be one hell of an album! James Choma: The Numan/Nicholson release had been put back indefinitely the last I had heard. Apparently Gary was trying to block it. All I've heard from this period is "London Times" and "Like a Refugee" and judging by this evidence, it's not hard to see why :-) Ken Bryant: You are one cool Numanoid! Although I must agree that "The Need" is one of Gary's less accomplished works. Now why are there only 8 tracks on SC? To: "Gary Numan" >From: Tom Gorham >Why did they muck about with the track listing on Telekon? they didn't "muck about" with it. they simply inserted the singles that weren't on the album at the ends of side A and side B. >It is one of my favourite albums - and certainly the one I have most >setimental feelings for - but the re-release doesn't follow the original >song list, so I haven't bought it. well, you're missing out skippy. there are four alternate mixes that appear on the cd. i'm not sure if it was a mistake or not, but,... Gary's old rule in the studio was: you do two mixes of a track and pick the best one. i have a feeling BB picked the wrong mixes. the mix of "I Die: You Die" was taken from the video version and has never appeared on CD before. "Remind Me To Smile" begins with the Compurhythm pitched higher. (just like the living ornaments '80 version) "Remember I Was Vapour" deletes the Arp solo and the mix of "The Joy Circuit" is entirely different. this version of Telekon should be entitled "Telekon: alternate mixes". >Any ideas why the additional songs aren't tacked on at the end - where >they should be? all of the b-sides do appear at the end. if you are a true 'numanoid' then you will buy this CD. it is remastered and has noticeable differences from the original. get it. scorbie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 May 1999 15:15:37 GMT0BST From: "James Chapman" Subject: The LA gig To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In the last digest, Kathryn Silures asked: > Can someone please explain this to me in little words and diagrams? > Is it not possible to release the live LA material sans Ms. Manson? > I never particularly cared for his mockery of vocalization, anyhow. > I do not understand the legalities, that is clear. Now, I would as soon purchase some Slim Whittaker > muck as sit through any Manson (so called) music. > I asked a similar question a while back, and this is the answer Rod gave in #512 Hello. Cleopatra recorded the (May 19, 1998) L.A. show on digital video tape. I saw some of it at the office and the sound and picture quality was amazing. At the time, they were considering releasing it as a home video and/or live album. They released a clip of Down in the Park with Marilyn Manson to MTV (??!!!) who aired it, subsequently causing Manson's management to freak. At the time, Marilyn's new album was still several months away from being released. Still not sure the *exact* reason, but they vowed to sue if the footage ever saw the light of day. Cleo management didn't want to release the video without the Manson appearance and decided to wait until the storm blew over. Meanwhile, they discovered that one of the tapes had irreparable damage on the sound track, thus ruling out a live album and probably video release. I have asked several times (ie how about releasing what is there, how much is damaged, anything give me anything...) but it appears to be a dead issue. Sadly. They get tired of me bugging them about Numan things. Rod Los Angeles So there you have it. At least Rod's not the person to blame about it. Hopefully Eagle/Cleo will repay us with a live album from the June 12th gig, although it seems Gary's having to persuade them himself.
