Thanks for the recent praise of my work on the digest. I must admit every time I see my name or 'Cleopatra artwork' in the "topics" list at the beginning I cringe... so I really appreciate the kind words and the knowledge that what I have done is being appreciated by someone out there somewhere. Now that it's all done, and looking back, I, too, wish the releases could have been better (bonus tracks, photos, liner notes?) but I had very little support from Cleopatra or even Gary himself. I begged Gary for material more than once. I tried to convince him that getting excited about these cds would be in every body's best interest. I tracked down rarities myself, had them digitally mastered and ready to go, and he said no. I sent him the track listing for Remodulate months before it came out and asked him to write a line or two about each track. I thought *how cool would that be* but he wouldn't do it, so I took excerpts from his book. I don't know if he ever paid attention to it, as I was concerned about the NTFLT 12" version being on there. He didn't say anything... I am curious (and annoyed) as to how Beggars Banquest put out such amazing re-issues. I found the new Eagle releases to be interesting, on the artwork side. Gary has himself criticised the Fury photos and yet he changed the covers for Strange Charm and Machine and Soul but left the Fury intact. It just so happened that I was working on the M+S re-issue when Gary put the Eagle re-issue pic on his website. I had the picture (it's in the box set) so thought if he can outright change the cover then so can I. I submitted the artwork in both designs to Cleopatra, the old pic and the new pic, and they chose to go with the new version, despite, as has been mentioned, that particular photo does not precisely correspond withthe M+S time period (not that Cleopatra knows that). To be honest, I think the squiggly design that Eagle put over the picture does not add anything, and my simpler verion works better. Just my opinion. There are no artwork credits on the Eagle re-issues so I don't know if Gary had anything to do with them. Also I think the photo they used on the Eagle Strange Charm cover is not very strong, and is much too dark. Yes, the original cover is a bit odd (he looks like a pilot, which I guess he is), but at least you can see what's going on. For those of you who don't have the Eagle version, they used a photo from the video of NTFLT. Or at least from that photo session. Very dark and VERY blue. >The only real complaint i have with the Cleopatra series {two, >actually} - The "Berserker" cover looks horrible on the rerelease. I LOVE >the original - the BLUE and white one, not purple and white. It also looks >terribly cheap. The bonus tracks aren;t much either - I think they should >have mirrored the box set version. On the brighter side, Rod, you did a >fabulous job with all of your dedication and research. Thumbs off, hats up, >etc. >Craig MacNeil I explained about the Berserker bonus tracks a couple times already. I had gotten different bonus tracks ready, mastered and everything, Cleopatra said go ahead but Gary said he didn't want me to use them. His (more or less) exact words were "I would be very upset to have these tracks appear on a Gary Numan cd". By that point the box set had come out (or was about to) so I scrambled to put something different on... Admittedly the bonus tracks on Berserker are probably the least exciting of the Numa cds I have done, but I felt the historical significance of the otherwise unavailable (in the US) 12" mixes outweighed the b-sides. Unfortunately their lengths cut down on the disc space. I would have loved to put the whole thing out as a double cd, with the original album, the extended album and all the b-sides, a concept that would have worked with the Fury re-issue as well. I don't know what you mean about the Berserker cd looking "cheap". Maybe because the text reads through the front cover? I had no control over the paper stock they used, but obviously a higher grade would have corrected that. I submitted the entire booklet in color, but they went with b&w on the inside (same with Strange Charm and M+S). Yet they sprung for the color inside tray and full 5 color printing on the actual disc, which is fairly expensive. (They loved the Sacrifice artwork - all b&w!!). I think the Berserker disc is the best part of the package. I also like the way the disc for Strange Charm turned out. I love that picture of Gary with the sunglasses... (from the inner sleeve of the vinyl version). Are you kidding me? I saw Gary live at the 930 Club in Washington D.C. and I was floored! Not only because I had never seen him live before, but because I had never heard Gary's music played with such power and fury! I would probably blow-up the engine of my car racing to the CD store to buy a copy of the Exile tour on CD! (Driving over a few nuns even, if need be.:-) I couldn't imaging getting more value for my money than that. BTW, to hell with Marilyn Manson. I don't mean his music any ill will, but surely his presence at a Numan concert could not be the only redeeming thing about it! I personally would NOT like Manson to appear on a Numan live CD. It would lessen the value of the recording to be sure. Marilyn Manson is a pale, poor reflection of Gary Numan at his very best. A sad, pitiful excuse for wasting CD-plastic at his very worst. There was a middle aged (sorry - quite frumpy looking) woman, further along the balcony, with a young boy, aged about 11 or 12ish. She looked like she was urging him to approach Gary. Eventually the boy trundled over & pulled on Gary's arm. Gary looked down at the boy and said, "Ello there. What you after then?" The kid then asked Gary, "Erm, is it true that you've got a secret son?" Gary laughed out loud & answered, "Well, if it is true, its so much of a secret, I don't know anything about it!" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Whilst I'm here, could someone tell me who this Mathew Holbrook person is? Or better still, tell me what his problem is? He seems very bitter about something. Isn't there some sort of etiquette about excessive use of unnecessary bad language? He pops up now and again, but rarely seems to have anything nice, or positive to say about anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >From: "Dalis Car" Subject: Random Rants and Stuff... >Wrote about: >>From: "James Chapman" >>Subject: Random rants and stuff >>Let me suggest-- again-- what SHOULD get released, and what would be >> >>bought by every last one of us is... a new live album. >And said: >What would be the point? Well, Dalis Car, you say you already have: LO, WN, GHOST, SM & DL. We could ask you, what was the point of buying 'any' of those? - Certainly, what was the point of buying the latest one, when you already had 5 others? There was no big 'M Manson' type appearance on Dark Light. Maybe the 'point', is this: Living Ornaments 79/80 White Noise 84 Ghost 87 Skin Mechanic 89(?) (Dream Corrosion 93) Dark Light 94 Clearly, LO 79/80, are quite close. As are Dream Corrosion & Dark Light (Though, you don't have DC). The point is IMO, that these live albums give a good view as to how Gary's live performances have changed "over the years". So basically my point is, if the Forum gig is released, then it's going to represent 1999. Personally I think that from 94 to 99 is far too big a gap, especially when, again in IMO, this period has been his best in a long time, particularly in the live performance area, so a live album from 99 is going to be well overdue! Another important question I would ask you, is, do you have live recordings of anything from Exile? (Apart from Dominion Day). Do you have live versions of the recent working of DITP? Do you have live versions of the recent, quite dramatically different 'Friends', or 'Metal', or 'Voix'? Have you got a recent live recording of 'Tracks'? - Forgetting about bootlegs, I'd be interested your feedback. You asked, "what would be the point" - I think there are a lot of very good points. The last live Numan album was over 5 years ago. I personally would love to see at least one more live Gary Numan album, this side of Y2K. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 13:12:01 +0200 From: "Seth" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #537 To: "Gary Numan" I found *Vince H.* interpretations of the album Exile very good. I would say that I agree in the most thoughts of you. "An Alien Cure" is IMO the try to get rid off this alien in himself that always whispers all these lies about god and the angels, that they exist and so one. Gary is indeed no christian man. Or better to say: he was a christian man. The album Sacrifice is great! Almost all of these songs I like very much. Also his lyrics are one of the best - compared with his other albums. E.g.: in the song "Scar" I find it is a much better idea to set up the female background voice in this way. If I remember machine&soul I must say I nearly hated this crying women chorus in the background. So the first 9 songs (without "I wonder" and "Love Isolation") I don't like them all. Seemed like a try to copy Prince with a whole album. I don't like this kind of disco music. I don't like Prince. Also "1999" is not my taste. New Wave is much better. Sorry, if someone doesn't agree with me here. (Exactly in this moment I remember in a song of Gary in which he copied a hollywood-song. I can't remember the title...). A very good line is following out of the song "Magic", that imo is a connection to that what I said above: "When I sleep I hear sad words. Songs of God. That show me the lie." (And then he repeats a line out of god's song:) "I'll keep you safe, I'll keep you warm and I'll keep you here. Alone forever." A very little moment it seemed for me that Gary tried to say that all these lies about god, with a long beard in heaven, cares for us a.s.o., are just a trick to keep us here in our (Un-)reality. I am not really sure, but Vince tried to say the same. Did you? As I heard that a song have been placed in the movie Dark City I was very surprised and glad. This have been a good choice of the producer. By the way, which song has it been? On the albums "Sacrifice" and "Machine and soul" I miss the lyrics for all the bonus tracks. Can anybody help me please to get this lyrics? Further I have just heard a midi-file of a Gary song called "Echo". I like this midi-file very much and I wonder on which album the real song is. Maybe someone knows this? Thank you in advance for all your help. :-) Jonathan ____________________________________ http://home.muenster.net/~seth I recommend the ~~>website of the author jonathan dilas<~~ ____________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 13:03:50 +0000 From: "Danny Cushion" Subject: hello To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi chaps i'm Danny..big Gaz fan, have been since '79..i have a very, very wide taste in music and strange as it may seem i acturly dont like very much of the '80's keyboard/electronic bands!! i'm acturly very busy at present,so this intro' will be short. I had my credit card debited, and to this day have NEVER received anything. They emailed me saying that the CD/Video would be delayed due to "Technical Problems". They also said that they had already debited some people's credit cards and that they would refund their money if they wanted to cancel their order. I have emailed and faxed them numerous times over the last 18 months or so, and have never received a reply, or my money back. Anyone else in this situation? The Numan/Nicholson (Radioheart) CD has since raised its head yet again late last year on many on-line stores. I ordered a copy from "CD Zone" in the UK in November 1998 and have still not received it, they kept on telling me it's on "Back Order". I eventually cancelled my order, and thankfully they did not debit my credit card. So, just to warn you, DO NOT ORDER THIS CD, IT DOES NOT EXIST. I bought Replicas and Tubeway Army on CD because my old LPs were beginning to wear under the strain, the original lyric sheets had gone awol, and I wanted to hear the early stuff included on the Tubeway Army CD. Each of these CDs adopted the sensible option: You have the original album in its entirety for the benefit of us old codgers who - strike me down - actually LIKED the original, followed by the additional tracks, which you can either take or leave (and a track 'The Crazies' is best left to completists only). Telekon, on the other hand, requires you to program the CD if you want to hear the original track listing, and apparently mucks about with the mixes. You might like that: I don't, for reasons I explained in my original posting; and that's why I won't be buying it. It's got nothing to do with being a 'true numanoid'. Looking forward to the Dance reissue... I believe I have solved the great mystery - why Exile and Sacrifice don't sound like they are supposed to. I recently read in and old audio maazine about Gary's studio setup. In it, he talks about the type of monitor speakers used. The type - Tannoy, Little Golds. Then, I happened to be at some bands hobby studio, and popped on a cassette {off of the CD's} on their tape deck. It sounded fantastic. The drums were massive, and miraculously, the muddiness of the two albums had mysteriously disappeared. Then I noticed their monitor speakers. Tannoy Little Golds, which I was then told are known for being extremely toppy. So there you go. His stereo is different to ours. I've actually never had any other albums that sound so different on different types of equipment.
