We are reduced to talking about fonts on a blinkin CD cover? What about the music? Sure, Gary's imagery has always been the icing on the cake for me, but if one is so attached to a piece of cover art, perhaps they should have taken better care of their original copies. When I bought the two LP box set Living Ornaments '79/'80, it was in a case in the record store with a lot of incense. The box still smells that way (it was import, so it shipped without shrink rap - this is 1981, bear with me) and it brings back the memory of walking in that store at the age of 18 and taking my $35 and buying it. I still remember that moment whenever I open the box and smell the incense trapped inside. However, just because a reissue of the same thing lacks the incense smell (or the tour schedule from '79/'80 (maybe it does/doesn't - don't care) is no reason to slag the reissue. Neither is the typeset, font or hue of the color on the top right hand corner of the 3rd page of the CD book either. The music should stand on it's own, and in Numan's case, it does, since he was clearly ahead of his time. Who gives a rats ass if it is Arial Narrow 71 or Stoppage 25 as the font on the cover? Can you read what it is? Then fine - not one that I can see here has mentioned the quality of the real product being reissued - the music. Consider this: While me, Joey, and 90+% of Numanoids are listening to Telekon on a lovely new fresh sounding, remastered CD, Tom is listening to his on scratched old vinyl nearly 20 years old. No need to flame about it - think who's better off :-) Tom, if you'd rather have the original Telekon with pops and hisses rather than slightly different mixes sounding spanking clean with two classic singles in there, then that's your decision. :-) I must admit I was a bit cagey about getting them at first, as I had the four 2CD sets from 1993. I got Telekon first as I saw it had a different version of IDYD, and was blown away by the whole CD. The other three followed in quick succesion and I was really happy with them, well worth the cash. I am now anxiously awaiting the rest of the Beggars remasters. Dance should be good as that album is very long for a vinyl LP - around 57 minutes - Heck, that's longer than The Fury EXTENDED mixes! And the sound would have had to be compressed quite a lot to fit on there. The sound quality on Dance does lack slightly compared to most 80s Numan albums. However I, Assassin is the one I'm relishing most . Having that album remastered may mean it taking over top spot from Strange Charm, however at the moment I,A is lurking down at three or four. :-) Craig - Yes, The Premier Hits cover is now Gary in Dance gear on the left, with the black and purple striped background, but with a white panel at the top with the titles on. The original UK PH was Gary in Dance gear in front of a panel of TV sets. Thanks to those who answered my cut out bin question. I take it they are an American thing is it was all Americans who answered, and I've never seen them in the UK. (This could >further carry over, into why are there different >'bonus tracks'?...etc) Again, why not just release >the Eagle versions, lock, stock and graphics in the >States? >Anyone who can shed some light...please do! Thanks >Me Hello. I wondered this myself but didn't point it out to Cleopatra for fear I might find myself out of a job. The truth is Cleopatra has/had no idea what Eagle is doing, and I'm sure vice versa. When Gary announced on his website that he was going to be selling the Eagle reissues, I asked Cleopatra why he wasn't selling the Cleo cds as well, particularly The Mix and Remodulate. They said, I guess it's up to him. They have no idea. The most reasonable idea I've come up with is that when Cleopatra started the re-issue project in Feb 98 none of the Eagle re-issues were even conceptualised as far as we knew. Even the box set was a long ways away at that point. I was asked to do the cover for the Mix which was already completed but had no artwork. I had the photos I'd taken on the Teletour and combined the old with a new ("the mix", get it?) photo from the yearbook. (Trivia: I wanted to call the remix album "Remodulation" but Cleo decided to go with the much more evocative "the Mix"). Then they asked me to design a compilation that would introduce the upcoming catalog to the American market. Then the individual cds, one at a time. I don't think there ever was a meeting between Eagle and Cleopatra (and Gary for that matter) to devise a 'world wide plan'. As far as the differing bonus tracks, Cleopatra wanted as obscure tracks as I could get, in order to maximize sales and please the die-hard fans (the last part may have been my idea ;o). Cleo knew that most American Numan fans probably already had the original UK releases, so wanted something special to entice them to buy cds they may already have. (The entire music business is relying heavily on the "remastering" bit for this very plan). Plus the (1998) tour would introduce people to the label and material. Most of the cds I did for Cleopatra were released (or at least finished - normally three months before they are released) long before the Eagle versions came out. That's pretty heavy rotation considering the station that's playing it is WRXL FM 102.1, a generally hard-rock, heavy metal, southern-rock station. I run across my office to the radio and crank it up every time it comes on. Not particularly because I like it all that much - it's not really that different from the original - it's just great to hear one of Numan's songs getting airplay. The other nice part of it is that the DJs seem to always make a point of giving Gary Numan credit for writing it AND singing on this new version just about every time they play it. God knows Gary could use the exposure. Too bad that Cleopatra can't take advantage of this fresh interest and release a new Numan single right now. Even a re-release of "Dominion Day" or perhaps "The Angel Wars". I wouldn't want anyo= ne else to get the blame. For anyone who missed it, I'd just like to point out that I'm the miserab= le bastard who keeps slagging things off. I'm afraid I can't help it - I read something stupid and... Don't get me wrong, I know I make mistakes and I make them often, but Gar= y deserves to be criticized for his "choice" of songs at Nottingham. It's interesting, if a little depressing, that no one has directly addressed my original criticisms (in #537 I think). For what it's worth, I DID enjoy Nottingham, but only in the sense that y= ou enjoy an old episode of The Simpsons when you were expecting a brand new one. Yep. You got it: "Cars!" The first time I've heard Numan played ANYWHERE in Russia. In fact they were playing some 80's compilation. Well the rest of the night was history, what I can remember of it that is ... Two reasons: (1) I didn't have a CD player at the time; (2) my vinyl edition was still purring along nicely. The 1998 reissues - which coincided with my turntable giving up the ghost - were a fantastic idea because they incorporated the original sleeve notes plus extra stuff that was worth having. Did the '93 reissues come with this, and were they as well remastered as the later CDs? If so, then the 93 Telekon reissue would certainly be on my shopping list ... except it doesn't seem to be available. >Oh, wait, never mind. I forgot... you didn't buy it because your nose >was out of joint because they mucked about with the track order... Did they? Well strike the 93 remix off my list too, then. >I'm sorry, but I've never heard a sillier reason not to buy an album. Silly in your eyes, maybe Joey, but it's perfectly valid. I'd love to have the Telekon reissue for the reasons stated above, but I also wanted to sit back and wallow once more in an album that formed a soundtrack to my adolescence for about six months in 1980. In your opinion, that's obviously a bit odd, but aren't ALL Numan fans guilty of a little bit of strange pendantry? Surely a common thread among almost all Gaz's supporters is a nostalgic fondness for those early albums, and a shared dislike of pointless meddling - however well intentioned - with a classic album. You tell me Joey - does the different track listing actually ADD anything? At the end of the day, though, surely it's my choice? I don't want to buy the album. I'm sure hundreds of others do. But there's no sin in having your own reasons not to buy anything - and I think you should respect that.
